We have taken some photos of "The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury". They represent actual movie quality.
If you have seen "Aeon Flux" or "Reign" then you are familiar with the style of animation of Peter Chung. It goes well with this material. Although the film is short, I recommend it highly. Dark Fury is well worth your time and $$.
Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury is a fun and action-filled animae. It blows away Van Helsing's movie tie-in animae, that's for sure! This is more adult oriented, and sticks well with the two movies fel and premise. A good and somewhat beautifully animated filler for the two movies. My only gripe was that it was much too short, and that the animation seemed to change in some areas. Not the 3-D stuff, I mean the look of it entirely at times. Kinda jarring. But overall, a colorful and well done animation that looks like that Aeon Flux's Peter Chung and his studio really put some care and thought to this little filler. Most don't.A must see if you liked Pitch Black, and the much better movie - Chronicles of Ridick.
I can only give this short 3 stars because even though I liked it I also felt like there could have been more to it. I liked both Pitch Black and the Chronicles or Riddick and it I like the idea of filling in certain gaps. I believe there are a number of angles that could be covered in the Riddick storyline. With Dark Fury I think that it helps, only slightly, in explaining the beginning of Chronicles of Riddick sequal and one of the scenes in the sequal when Riddick and Jack are on Crematoria.Yet, like other reviewers this was just to short for me. Just when I had gotten into it, it was over. This is critical to me since I was thinking about buying it. I am glad that I had rented it, where I watched it twice and then after that I got all I needed from it. I think this anime would have better if it was a part of a series dealing with Riddick's past. It would be better if they made a series of Riddick animations and then sold them together. It would nice to know what happened to Riddick during his years in prison. It would be nice to know about his escape from Butcher Bay (I guess the video game deals with that). It would be nice to know what exactly are the Furyans race. It would be nice to know what happens after the Chronicles of Riddick sequal. Covering these in an animated series would have made Dark Fury more appealing. Also, I am not one for the Ion Flux style of animation. It made Riddick look smaller than in the movies. He looked real scrawny where in the movies his is bigger. So my recommendation is to rent, not buy, unless you are really a Riddick fan and plan on making this a part of your collection.
Too bad this wasn't feature length. Vin Diesel is one of the best voice actors out there (See the Iron Giant). The animation is beautifully crafted, with the smallest attention to detail, an an arguably visionary approach. This short film shows how far the Riddick universe could go in the animated format. I hope they continue this series either in live action or animated format in the future.
hope there is to be more movies and even cartoons around this franchise. The animation is way to Aeon Flux for Me... At times it even seams like 3 or more styles are present, like a Heavy Metal Magazine... And the addition of computer animated sequences seem out of place...like they where added instead of animating the shot. The fight scene at the end almost gives you motion sickness.I recommend this as a jumping point to the 'Chronicles' movie, and welcome the start of a long and prosperous franchise for Vin Diesel.
The story was interesting and follows in line with the tales and universe of the other Riddick films. A true Riddick fan will probably want to own this for their collection, but anyone else could easily miss this animated film. The animation was very good, but this animator's style is not one of my personal favorites. Since I am a fan of the Riddick character I am glad to own it, but in truth it offers nothing special beyond another Riddick story. I might have enjoyed it more if the film were longer. As far as suitablity for children is concerned, it is no more violent than any typical Saturday morning cartoon with the usual man-eater alien monster, various bad guys toting guns and a psychotic vilianist. It probably does emphasize bloodletting a little more than the typical Saturday cartoon, but I have seen comic books that were worse. On a 1 to 10 scale with 10 being the best rating, I would offer it a 5.In conclusion, if you're a Riddick fan you may want this. If not then you'll probably be happier buying something else.
I was very surprised this wasn't longer. I am a follower of Chung's work on Aeon Flux and was hoping for a two hour movie. Like one reviewer said; don't pay more than $9.99 to see it. It's only 35 minutes but it's much better than the actual live acition movie. Now why didn't they make a direct to video animated movie that's two hours? If you like lots of sci fi action, it's in the same vein as Aeon. While I don't pretend to understand Riddick the character; he reads as a neo Swartzennegger type. Only he has more of a chance of breaking into better roles. If he doesn't try to look like Arnold and finds his own way; it'll be a successful series.
This movie is supposed to be a "filler" between Pitch Black Pitch Black (Unrated) [HD DVD] and Chronicle of Riddick The Chronicles of Riddick (Widescreen Unrated Director's Cut). The story isn't bad, and it continues in the Riddick tradition. I was sad it was not longer, but I was fairly happy with the story. It was interesting to see some of the behind the scenes commentary which helped paint some of the Riddick universe's picture.
This review is from: Dark Fury - The Chronicles of Riddick (Animated) (DVD) Chronicles of Rddick is not complete unless you have them all and this was the last one for us. An enjoyable film!
The 35 minute prequel to the Chronicles of Riddick. This of course is the on-going trend thanks to the Animatrix. Of course where the wachowski's innovate, other imitate. The Animatrix was a 90 minute journey into the matrix universe and,for fans, it really went in depth into that world. Van Helsing had some cheapo cartoon released as well and was greeted with a gigantic indifferent yawn.I'm happy to say that Dark Fury is no Van Helsing: London Assignment, but its also not as good as the Animatrix, mainly because its really short. It starts right after Pitch Black, and our anti-heroes run into a necro ship and are forced into yet another fight for their lives. Nothing new is really learned about Riddick or the necromongers. It sets up why Riddick left Jak and Imam. If your really into the film I would recommend it for some more kick @$$ Riddick fight scenes and some great one liners. Its pretty entertaining and with the man behind Aeon Flux and The animatrix:Matriculated at the helm the quality of the animation is top notch. Unlike the movie there is lots of blood spilled and the money shots are in tact. Even in cartoon form Riddick is the man. It features the voices of all the original cast members, including the girl who played Jak in Pitch Black. (Funny how they will bring her back for this but not for the movie.)It has a few features on the making of the cartoon, where you can sorta laugh at Vin Diesel trying to make the cartoon sound real deep, and you get a quickie look at The Chroniclces movie. For ten beans I felt satisfied. If you want more Riddick action, I recommend it, if you want more info on Riddick or The Chronicles movie, wait for the sequel or play the game.
"Pitch Black"/"Chronicles Of Riddick" fans, do NOT pass this one up just because of its short running time and animated nature! A gem of the Asian style of animation, this underseen chapter covers events between "Pitch Black" and "Chronicles", picking up almost immediately after the former. Tells a more compact tale, meaning the apprx. 30-minute running time is not a hindrance (although if you want to talk price, then yeah, it could be argued that it should be a little less expensive for its brevity. Makes up for it by being just plain better than most 2-hour entries in the Action/Sci-Fi field). The ship carrying the first movie's survivors is picked up by what at first appears to be just another merc ship but turns out to have a much weirder, more original, and more interesting nature; also brings into play some visually astounding alien lifeforms. Eclipses "Chronicles Of Riddick" and equals, perhaps surpasses "Pitch Black" A must for fans of the series or of such animated fare as "The Animatrix", "Galerians: Rion" or "Blood: The Last Vampire". Interesting sidenote: this isn't star Vin Diesel's first foray into animation. Also check out the more child-friendly and seriously under-appreciated "Iron Giant" from 1999, where Diesel voices the title character.
I'm not a fan of animes nor have I ever seen one. But I decided to buy this movie because I love the Chronicles of Riddick series. I was very impressed by this film. Being an anime it was a different then watching just a regular film. The action and concepts were good. The storyline was interesting because it brought in items that are in the The Chronicles and explains why Riddick left Jack and Imam. I was very pleased to hear Rhiana Griffith's voice as Jack, which I was a disappointing factor in the actual sequel. The primary problem I found w/ this anime was the length. It would have been 5 stars if it were longer and went into Riddick actually leaving them on New Mecca. I recommend it for Pitch Black fanatics though. It completes the saga.
This was gift for my husband who loves the whole chronicles of riddick thing. He loves it so i gave it 5 stars for that reason.I have not seen it nor do i plan to so if he loves it i love it.
I just saw Dark Fury on a rented DVD and had very satisfyingexperience. Dark Fury is well drawn, fast paced and with a little CGIto spice it up.The animated short story takes place where we last leftRiddick, the preacher and the wannabe tough girl in Pitch Black. Theyare picked up by a fairly big spaceship of hightech bounty hunters. From here on Riddick starts to kick ass and continues to do so forabout 30 min. Vin Diesel's voice is one of the coolest in Hollywoodonly topped(maybe) by Sean Connery. The only problem in this animatedadventure is that it is to damn short(33 min). It's a colorful andinteresting universe with a great villain and some fantastic andimaginative actionscenes. In short terms Riddick kicks butt yet again.I went straight in on my Pc, went online and bought this little baby.Hail to the king baby. I give it a 7,5 out of 10.
I have been a Riddick fan ever since Pitch Black. This cartoon was great! It's the perfect filler in between movies. I do hope they continue the series. The DVD was great with the extras. One thing though, it was way too short. I also like the tie in's to The Chronicles Of Riddick movie. Question: Was it my imagination, or were some of her statues abord the Necromonger ship?
I have never had more conflicted feelings about any animator. PeterChung, creator of Aeon Flux brings us an interquel, Dark Fury to thefilms Pitch Black (a low budget sci-fi suspense story) and TheChronicles of Riddick (an action-packed sci-fi adventure). Dark Furyadds its own unique flavour, while retaining the greatness of theseries. Chung has a very interesting style and I thought it translatedwell on screen. The only one who didn't deliver as well however, surprisingly, wasRiddick himself who delivered an unbelievable amount of redundantone-liners during the film and I did not have as much respect for him, like when I watched Chronicles.Regardless, this is an excellent follow-up to Pitch Black.
I was half-expecting a kind of Van Helsing-esque presentation, one that was well, ok..and Dark Fury was for the most part just ok, mainly because it was so short, but I left feeling pretty satisfied, even though we probably could have skipped from the beginning(except for the last part with Jack) and ended with Riddick dropping Jack and Imam on Helion Prime. Dark Fury did have a pretty coherent plot, and Junner was cool. Chillingsworth was a rather over-the-top character, some physcho witch who thinks death is an art form. The introduction of Toombs was good, and the two alien species introduced were both well-rendered and designed by computer animation (I'll let you see what they are). The animation was top-notch, with what I consider to be second only to realistic, attractive drawing, and that is great colors. Chung and his guys used a lot of neat red and purple lighting, so nothing lacking there. I found it somewhat disturbing that the animation changed when Jack and Imam were trying to escape out the hangar and were met by Junner. As Riddick and Junner fight (for about the first twenty seconds or so), it looks like a four-year old drew it (no offense). Junner, Riddick, and Jack have these thick lines around them, and they'r e rather grotesque. Also, Riddick's computer rendered spaceship looks like a Dollar Tree plastic toy. But for all my criticism, it was only for a bit anwyway so no biggie (I just had a laugh at those previous things, doesn't really take anything away from the flick). The voice acting was great because we had Vin Diesel, of course. His resonatingly low pipes just ring "cool". Rhiana Griffith was good for the part she was given, Chunlund did his usual "Wolverine" imitation as Toombs, Junner had a cool voice, and Keith David's Imam will always be good. Chillingsworth had some kind of Slavic accent, and was kinda funny sometimes with her accent. As far as parents are concerned, there were three "s-words", one "a-word", one "bitc-word", and one "bast-word". A decent amount of blood in the opening fight scene, almost none afterwards. Overall, really good foray into animation, outdoing its equivalent Van Helsing (though I liked the London Assignment). Good art, colors, and decent plotline make this worth at least a rental (I want to buy it, but that may be because I'm Riddick's No. 1 fan). Try it out!
This review is from: Dark Fury - The Chronicles of Riddick (Animated) (DVD) Very much in the style of the Riddick movies released so far. Excellent voice acting. Too bad it was only a half hour. But for the price, well worth it. Just makes you hope the hollywood studios allow for another movie. Vin Diesel loves his character Riddick. I say we all send the message to Hollywood to let him reprise the role he made so famous with Pitch Black. So enough waiting already, lets get this next movie made. With all the remakes and sequels out there jam packing the movie theaters, its a wonder why they dont just make the movie. Sheesh! It will be a hit. Riddick kicks ass!
If you are a fan of the Riddick movies then you will like this, if not you should rent befor you buy. The problems with the movie is that it is very short, only about 38min. The art form changes, characters will be normal then some features will be exagerated in the next clip. Also this movie contains explicit violence and is not suitable for kids.
Way to short but some of the sweetest animation WITH a plot for sometime. Great use of the voices to keep the link to the franchise movingwith big Vin battling all sorts including what i thought looked like a'Giant Mecha Penis - with teeth'. Now I'm not one to crimp creativestyle, IT looked bizarre but it worked! Funny, bloody and slick - notsince animatrix has something caught my attention so nicely. Likeothers before me this should be compulsory viewing before the newfeature (i haven't seen it yet) just to get into the Riddick groove ofthings. This definitely could spawn a few more anime 'chronicles' and ihope it does. Animation like this needs an audience. More please....
