LmAo!! hEhe!! this movie was s0o0o0 funniee!! from medieval times, to "don't you want somebody to love?" this movie was so0o0 funny! those critics should be put to death for trashing this movie! it rox my sox!! i beg you, screw the critics and go see this movie!!!
this movie isn't as funny as liar liar, and dumb and dumb. but it's a tadmore entertaining than dumb and dumber. the cable guy has laughs, and isfairly well paced. but the movie has a little far-fetched ending. i givethecable guy **1/2 out of ****
This movie stunk, plain and simple. Me and my family, I remember whenwe went to see it, wanted to walk out so bad. This movie was the startof a streak of bad movies by Jim Carey. This streak included thismovie, The Truman Show, Man on the Moon. Don't waste your time on anyof these movies. There's more exciting and worthwhile things to do inlife than watch any of the listed movies. This movie wasn't funny, andit just drug on and on. It did have a somewhat good message at the end. That being that we are watching too much TV in this day in age. Otherthan that, I would have rather smashed my hand with a hammer thanwatched this movie.
While I found the movie quite funny at times, it felt like it needed are-write as the plot wasn't focused and the cable guy acted out ofcharacter near the end. It was hard for me to root for or againsteither Carrey or Broderick since they were at times sympathetic thendid things which would make you not care for them. Broderick'scharacter is generally considered the protagonist but the movie isnamed after Carrey's character so who knows. The Cable Guy was directedby Ben Stiller and I actually think it could have been better if heplayed the role which ended up going to Matthew Broderick. Although TheCable Guy performed well at the box office, I can see why it got mixedreviews and didn't do as well as Carrey's previous films. The Cable Guyhas a quirky sense of humor as well as a large amount of filmreferences which would not appeal to everyone. Despite its flaws Istill found it funnier than most comedies.
When I first watched this movie, I started off enjoying the first half but when it came to the second half, it was losing its edge, the first half is a classic but the second half is mediocre at best. I feel bad for dumping this movie cause Jim Carrey did a great job as the title character. Overall if you don't own any Jim Carrey movies, watch Dumb and Dumber, The Mask or Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.
"The Cable Guy," as most know by now, was a major departure for Jim Carrey. The rubber-faced goofball of hits like "Dumb And Dumber" and "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" was still present, but he was appearing in a radically different form. With Carrey playing a cable installer fixated on an unsuspecting customer, "The Cable Guy" is easily his darkest movie. However, I've got a soft spot for a good black comedy, and this one is about as black (and as good) as they come. Although goofy behavior had been Carrey's trademark since his "In Living Color" days (remember Fire Marshal Bill?), "The Cable Guy" was the first movie in which his madcap antics hinted at something dark beneath the surface. Indeed, by playing such a twisted character, Carrey was finally able to let loose and reveal the full range of his comedic gifts (aren't bad guys always more fun?). In contrast to the likes of "Ace Ventura" and "Dumb And Dumber," which were basically just live-action cartoons (albeit amusing ones), "The Cable Guy" provides Carrey with a creepy, unsettling vehicle where he gets to show some real malevolence. When Carrey plays basketball prison-style while Filter's "Hey Man Nice Shot" plays in the background, it's both hilarious and disturbing at the same time. And even when Carrey hams it up, as when he does a vibrato-heavy rendition of Jefferson Airplane's "Somebody To Love" while a group of freaky friends dances around him, there's an undercurrent of the surreal. In an equally dramatic departure from Carrey's norm, "The Cable Guy" even had a message mixed in with all its weirdness. It turns out Carrey's nameless cable installer, who gets his pseudonyms from old TV shows, was left by his mother to be raised by the TV, and has attachment issues stemming from his inability to relate to others. The plot is set against the backdrop of a former child star's trial for killing his twin brother, and director Ben Stiller (who also plays the murderous brother) takes several opportunities for pointed satire of our TV-addled culture. It's not until the end that the subject is addressed at length, but the pernicious effects of TV are a prominent theme of the movie. When the cable guy laments in his closing monologue that he learned about the facts of life from watching "The Facts Of Life," it's strangely poignant. And how about a hand for Matthew Broderick as Steven Kovacs, the unfortunate object of Carrey's fixation? It's hard to believe this guy almost faded into obscurity in the five years or so after "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." If not for his classic turn in "Election," I'd say Steven was the role Broderick was born to play. At first Steven just regards the cable guy as a nuisance, but his annoyance over his new friend's increasingly creepy behavior grows as the film wears on until it turns to outright fear and desperation, and Broderick captures it perfectly. Few, if any actors, make a better hapless guy than Broderick, which is especially ironic given that he became a star playing the uber-cool Ferris Bueller.Watching this movie, it's hard to believe it was such a letdown at the box office. I firmly believe entertainers should be rewarded for taking risks, but apparently Carrey's fans weren't quite ready for him to play such a troubled character in such a dark movie. That's too bad, because those who haven't seen this movie are really missing out. "The Cable Guy" doesn't go down as easy as Carrey's other comedies, but it's a lot more rewarding in the end.
Perhaps Jim Carrey's most versatile film performance, The Cable Guy is destined to be a cult classic. Each line spoken by Carrey is worthy of repetition for its pure comic content. The blend of characters, voices, and faces exhibited make this a must-see for any 1970's t.v. sit-com buff.Don't listen to the doomsdayers that say this is a "dark comedy" and not worth the $20 million Carrey earned. Hold onto that rewind button, use it every few seconds until you've memorized the movie and you'll agree, it's genius.
This truly is a hysterical movie. Most people here seem to short changethismovie, and say that it isnt funny, that the characters were too boring, etc. The thing that people dont realize is that this movie deserves a secondviewing. There are so many underlying jokes (take a look at some of theexpressions on Jim Carrey's face at some points in this movie, and youwillknow what I mean).(Some Spoilers)The plot centers around Steven Kovacs (Matthew Broderick),aarchitect who was kicked out of his previous house after proposing to hisgirlfirend Robin (Leslie Mann). Down on his luck, Steven moves to anapartment, and since the apartment is free of cable, Steven calls up thecable guy to give him some cable. Along the way (after a recommendation ofafriend), Steven asks for free cable. The Cable Guy, Chip Douglas, (playedby, who else, Jim Carrey), does give him free cable on the basis that heandSteve be buddies. Things dont work out for long, however, because theobsessed Chip Douglas finally gets on Steve's nerves, and after a while,Steve denies the right of the Chip to be his friend. After this, however, Chip had already given Steve a big screen TV andKaraeoke Machine, made a video of Steve running down his boss, and took apicture of Steve making love to a prostitute, basically setting up Steveifhe was to ever turn his back on Chip. He did, and things started todeclinefor Steve. He was taken to jail for "stealing" the electronics and wasfiredafter the videotape was shown to the boss. Nobody realized the danger oftheCable Guy besides Steve. There were many funny parts of this movie. First off, the Medieval Timesscene had to be the funniest of the movie. In this scene, two members oftheaudience (Chip and Steve, ironically) were chosen to fight to the death(this isnt a normal thing at these Medieval Times shows). Chip takes thisfight rather seriously, and Steve shows how truly scared he is of theCableGuy.The other part I really liked was when Chip performed Jefferson Airplane's"Do You Want Somebody To Love". That was truly funny, and I had tears inmyeyes after watching that scene. The porno password scene also was veryfunny. The acting was well done across the board in my mind. Jim Carrey was funnyas usual, albeit in a very different way this time around. MatthewBroderickdid his part really well, as the straight man who falls victim to Carrey'sobsessiveness. Mann was also very good, along with the rest of thesupporting cast.Overall, this is a funny movie, that some people wont like due to the darkcomedy that it has, but still a high quality movie from very high qualityactors, such as Carrey and Broderick.8.5/10
Brilliant! Jim Carrey tried something different and was amazing. The onlydrawback was Matthew Broderick. I can't explain it, I just don't like theway he played the part. I loved how the story combined both Carrey'sfreaky, laughable antics and the serious problems of a man who was severelyneglected as a child. You really want to feel sorry for Chip Douglas, andthen he freaks out and your scared of him, and then in the end you think toyourself, "man this guy had it rough" I think that's why I ended up notliking Broderick and his character. Finally, I'd like to extend a virtualmiddle finger to everyone who moaned and groaned for Carrey to do somethingdifferent and then moaned again when they were taken off guard by thismovie. Make up your pathetic minds people! He is brilliant in any role!
This movie might take a couple of run-throughs before you truely appreciate all of the comedy in it, but the process is well worth it. Ace Ventura it is not. Nor is it The Truman Show. What it is is an excellent black comedy that has some of the funniest scenes of any movie that I've ever seen. Make no mistake, it is a black comedy, and therefore not for everyone. But it does contain great gags and dialogue, and in particular shows off Broderick as a great straight-man. The only reason it does not get 5 stars from me is that I reserve that for films like Saving Private Ryan, Braveheart, and such. Definately a great movie though.
Unfortunately, Jim Carrey's $20 Million salary got all the attention. Unfair! I have watched this movie many times and find it just as smart and cutting edge as Ben Stillers other films. The supporting cast is fantastic and there is one funny scene after another. I highly recommend this film for the comedy buff and I include it among my top 10 comedies of all time! Let me add that I am not a big fan of many of Jim Caray's movies. However, The Cable Guy hits all the right spots, including the funny bone!
When "The Cable Guy" first came out, it flopped and most peopleconsidered it sort of lowly. But I immediately found it impressive - ifdark - and I hope that in years to come, more people will. The plot ofcourse has bummed-out everyman Steven Kovacs (Matthew Broderick)getting cable installed by a TV-raised cable guy (Jim Carrey). Afterthat, the cable guy starts treating Steven to many things, apparentlywanting to be friends. But then, it turns out that he wants to be morethan friends. And he's not taking no for an answer.Really the reason that this movie is worth seeing is because it looksat the effects that TV has been having on our society for the pastsixty years. The cable guy spends much of the movie referencing TVshows, while throughout the movie, there's a murder trial vaguelyresembling the O.J. Simpson trial (director Ben Stiller plays thedefendant). Jim Carrey of course went on to star in another TV-centeredmovie, "The Truman Show".All in all, you should check out "The Cable Guy". It does bring up someinteresting points, even if the presence of Jim Carrey gives everythinga slight sense of goofiness. There's also some before-they-were-famousappearances: Jack Black, Owen Wilson, and others.
Oh God! I thought this movie would never end! This has to be the worst, dumbest and drabbest comedy ever made! The other reviewers say that this isCarrey's best. THIS IS JIM CARREY'S WORST MOVIE! He is just irritatingthroughout and Matthew Broderick is just a prat in this movie. The 2 actors(!) just don't gel together and the film is very repetetive. It may bedifferent from the norm, but it's a load of tripe all the same! Awful.1/10
Oddly enough, many feel "The Cable Guy " is Jim Carrey's worst movie. Could not disagree less . Great acting by Jim Carrey, he gets into the skin of his character, Chip Douglass. Can't descripe it enough... B-E-A UTIFUL
Jim Carrey plays a duranged cable guy (alias Chip Douglas) who becomes obsessed with his newest customer Steven Kovacs (played by Matthew Broderick). Chip was neglected as a child by his parents and was raised by the TV. Now he is very lonely, an outcast who really just wants a friend. However he takes this way over the edge with the vulnerable Steve, who has just broken up with his girlfriend. Carrey is great, a comical genius, and also quite creepy as the crazy cable guy. Broderick idealy fits the character of Steven, being the laid-back one that gets pushed to the edge by the cable guy's antics. I enjoyed this movie a lot, it was side-splitting funny and seriously dramatic at the same time. Fine directing from Ben Stiller, in addition to his funny cameo's in the movie as the alleged murderer on trial. All in all this is a great movie, a unique comedy, despite the fact that it wasn't recieved well in the box office. Dark comedies like this usually aren't. It may be an acquired taste, but it's a taste that's well worth a try!
THIS FILM IS AWESOME!People dislike this movie but I can't see why not. It's just as funnyif not more funny than most other movies with Jim Carrey in them.Jim Carrey is awesome! Jim Carrey is funny! Jim Carrey is crazy! JimCarrey is great with characters Jim Carrey is all round one of the bestactors of all time.Plus this film has Jack Black, Kyle Gass, Ben Stiller, MatthewBroderick and Owen Wilson also, all these people kick ass!People need to see this movie! If you haven't by now then you betterget to it!
Superb movie!Thats all i can say about this one, true dark masterpieceI like these type of JC movies better then ace ventura/the mask , eventhough they are pretty funny aswell10/10, cos the rating of 5,5 is really disgusting for this one, and needstoget higher
This film was so moving. I don't care what the real so called "film critics"said about this, saying it was Carrey's worst performence, and the film wasterrible, and it almost killed his career etc..The film is absolutely brilliant. And Jim Carrey was outstanding as thelonley Cable Guy, Chip Douglas/Larry Tate/Ricky Ricardoetc.I found myself with a lump in my throat at the end. And it makes me gladthat I am, and never will be, alone through this life. I felt so sorry forChip Douglas, when he was giving his speech at the end on top of the"International skyways". Another piece of brilliance about this film, I found, was the trial of JabobSweet (Ben Stiller, the director, in a cameo role). At the end of the film, The Jury come to a decision whether or not he isguilty of murdering his twin brother. But you don't get to hear it, becauseby then, you get what the film is all about, and don't really care of theoutcome of the trial. Well I didn't anyway.Carrey / Broderick / Stiller - Absoulute class.
This isn't Jim Carrey's best performance but it's hands down his funniest. He plays the role of 'Chip Douglas' with such melevolent brilliance that it's a wonder why it took the keen eye of Peter Weir to realize his potential. It's one of those rare occurances where a movie can be both frightening and funny at the same time. But it's Broderick's wonderfully offbeat performance that gets the bulk of the laughs. His reactionary shots are so hysterical it's hard to believe anybody else in the role, though I would've been curious to see Ben Stiller step out from behind the camera and give it a go. Stiller reunites with cast members of his short-lived FOX TV comedy series "The Ben Stiller Show" including Janeane Garofalo (in maybe the funniest bit performace ever!) and Andy Dick. Another standout in a small part belongs to Owen Wilson whose gone on to celebrity with roles in Shaghai Noon and The Minus Man. All the elements come together and form one of the funniest comedies in years.
I'll juicthe ya up. Call it one guy doin' another guy a solid! The Cable Guy is a sensational film but it doesn't surprise me thatmass audiences didn't get it or didn't like it. I'd say it's a bit toodark for some. But, it could have been even darker as far as I amconcerned.Jim Carrey needs to get back to making films like this and Dumb andDumber. For my sake...I realise he's running with a different crowdthese days. You just can't beat that dream scene where Chip Douglas is running downthe hall chasing Steven. He runs in 3 different styles that probablyscare some kids, but really are just great bits of comedy. If you don't like this film, then you just probably need to watch it afew more times.I'm off to watch it again now.Cable guy...cable guy...........cable guy............CABLAH GOOBLAH!!
