Retired madame Adelaide Bonfamille enjoys the good life in her Paris villa with even classier cat Duchess and three kittens pianist Berlioz, painter Toulouse and sanctimonious Marie. When loyal butler Edgar overhears her will leaves everything to the cats until their death, he drugs and kidnaps them. However retired army dogs make his sidecar capsize on the country. Crafty stray cat Thomas OMalley takes them under his wing back to Paris. Edgar tries to cover his tracks and catch them at return, but more animals turn on him, from the cart horse Frou-Frou to the tame mouse Roquefort and OMalleys jazz friends.
This review is from: The Aristocats (Special Edition) (DVD) I am trying to get all the Disney classics and I don't remember watching this movie when I was a kid but it was available so I bought it...and it's okay but I can remember now that I have it, why I didn't really watch it when I was a kid. It's kind of boring.
I LIKED THIS MOVIE. I ENJOY JUST ABOUT EVERY DISNEY CARTOON CLASSIC THERE IS. SO, THEREFORE IF YOU LIKE WALT DISNEY ANIMATION OR IF YOU LIKE CATS THEN I WOULD RECOMMEND YOU TO BUY THIS VIDEO. I AM NOT VERY FOND OF CATS BUT I LIKE THESE CATS AND THEY ARE SWINGING CATS.
After seeing The Aristocats: Special Edition in a two pack with The Foxin the Hound, I decided to buy it since both of these films werechildhood favourites. The Aristocats is a classic, definitely. It might not be a five-starclassic, but it is a fun film and makes a good evening's entertainment. It is somewhat a light refreshment from the darker, more serious Disneyclassics. The Aristocats tries to be a light-hearted musical comedy, and I think it just about succeeds. The storyline doesn't really make much sense and I don't think the plotis particularly strong, but it is certainly not weak. The animation andbackgrounds are a bit scratchy in places, typical of Disney's 70sfilms, but it does have a rustic, old fashioned charm about it.The Aristocats strongest points are the characters, the music and thehumour. The music is very memorable - try getting 'Everybody Wants ToBe A Cat' out your head in a hurry! The songs are written by theSherman Brothers, who also did the music for The Jungle Book. There wasone song called 'She Never Felt Alone' that was going to be in thefilm, but sadly didn't make it into the final feature. It is a shame, because I think it would have fit in very well. The characters are unforgettable. Thomas O'Malley is voiced by PhilHarris, and is basically Baloo in a feline form. Eva Gabor givesDuchess this warm and maternal feel and the kitten's voices actuallysound like children, and not an actor imitating the voice of a child. The secondary characters are here by the dozen and yet you still end upunderstanding their personalities. Edgar, the 'villainous' butler playsa similar role to Cruella De Vil, but he's more comical than scary, often ending up in funny situations. Even though he's the bad guy, he'sstill lovable all the same. The two British geese - Abigail and Amelia really had me cracking up,along with their crazy (and drunk) uncle. I also like the dogs, whotend to argue over who is 'the leader.' I could go on, but I won'tspoil it. But I can tell you, The Aristocats is funny and willentertain everyone without having to resort to rudimentary toilethumour. The bottom line - The Aristocats might not be Disney's crowningachievement, or even their strongest film from the 70s (that award is atie between The Rescuers and The Many Adventures of Whinnie the Pooh). But it is an enjoyable romp and is sure to entertain. If you arelooking for a dazzling work of art, you might be better off watchingBambi. But if you want a fun night in, The Aristocats is the way to go.It is a charming and lovable film and it's impossible to dislike.Enjoy! (And besides, it's good to have a film where cats aren't seen asthe villains).

This review is from: The Aristocats (Disney Gold Classic Collection) (DVD) My partner and I thought that this movie was great -- both when we were little and even now that we are grown up. The kittens are adorable, the old lady geese are a riot, and the fun jazz playing dancing cat scene is fun. It is a simple story line, which is sometimes nice. There isn't a big moral of the story, which can be nice, too, sometimes. And I love how the mice and the cats are good friends. It is pretty innocent, fun, simple, and just an all around nice movie. Cat lovers will especially like it, but all kids, big and small, should be able to appreciate it, laugh, and find all the animals funny.
This film takes elements from 'Lady and the Tramp' and '101 Dalmatians' and makes the characters cats. Like 'L&tT', a high-class, demure pet falls for a cad and discovers how loving he really is, and he shows her what the "wild side" is like. And just like '101 Dalmatians', a bumbling villian steals the pets to make a gain. The kittens' mom, Duchess, doesn't have the silly, fun-loving side as Lady had and is a sweet but flat character. It's not a completely "bad" movie--there are some amusing parts with the antics of the kittens and Thomas the cat trying to get used to the precocious kittens. This movie is also largely in part a musical. I have found the jazz music of the cat band to be overdone, badly put together, and overrated, but others who love lively, [somewhat] unconventional music in a movie may love it.
There are some movies, like The Lion King and Mulan, that are good movies and are very well-known. Then there are some movies, like this one, that are decent but don't get a lot of credit. One of Disney's lesser-known movies (for example, when you think Disney, does Simba or Duchess pop into your head? My point exactly), The Aristocats has beautiful animation, good acting, a good plot, but is a little boring. It's never been one of my favorites, as when I was tiny it kinda freaked me out (the villainous butler guy turned me off). So I haven't really changed.Let me summarize it for you: Pampered and beautiful Duchess and her three kittens are catnapped by the sneaky butler who plans to sell the cats for good money. They manage to escape his grasp once, but end up lost. With the help of a charming alley-cat named Thomas, a gang of singing cats, a mouse, and some ducks, the four cats must find a way home before their beloved mistress looses hope on finding them.Just as a side-point, but... why are all the character's moths open now on Disney DVD release covers? I mean, haven't you noticed? They all look a little stupid, if you ask me.And also, are you familiar with the movies, "Gay Purr-ey?" I probably spelled that wrong, but you get it. And I know the title sounds bad, but it means gay as in happy. This movie is so closely similar to that one that I can't HELP but wonder if Disney copied, or something else. Anyways, it is a good movie to add to your collection if you are a Disney-freak and must own every one of their movies, but if you're so-so (like me) then rent it once or twice and be happy.
This really means a lot, I first saw this movie quite a long time ago,and then I just recently saw it again and then I decided to give myopinion on it. I thought that this film was very fabulous! To me,everybody wants to love this movie, because that's the only movie whoknows where it's at! Like with a lot of movies from Disney around thetime of the 1970's and such, this is another one that has got somereally great music and really great songs! This another one of my alltime favorite animated movies that I have seen in my life, andespecially due to the fact that this has got some fabulous music! Itreally seems as if there have really been quite a number of reallygreat music in a lot of those old classic Disney movies, this being onof them! This has got some of the best song selections of any animatedmovie from the 1970's that I have ever heard in my life, and that issaying a lot because I have heard a lot of great music! And of course, what I really like about this movie is the fact that italso has got some really great animation, that is what is great aboutanimated movies like this one, the really fabulous animation quality, because in my opinion, the better the animation quality is, the betterthe animated movie will probably be. I really think that I should havelived back during all of the old days when all of these fabulousanimated movies were coming out, because I would have gone to see themwhen they came out in theaters! It is time for me to tell you a little something. Do you want to see avery great animated feature film from Disney with great music that youare really going to love? Then if you do want to, then you should seethis one, because you are really going to be loving this one!10/10
This review is from: The Aristocats [VHS] (VHS Tape) my purchase didn't take long to arrive. It was in great condition. My son is now 17 and loved this movie as a small child and now my 3 yr old niece enjoys it too.
I think that this is based on a French story but I know neither thetitle nor the story itself.Never before in this world have I ever seen such a loved andoverprotected family of cats! Their wealthy owner is a former operasinger and she is almost never seen not holding and obsessing over themwherever she is! She can never stop cuddling them - even while dancingwith an admirer! "Meow, meow!" they should say (in English "put medown, woman!"). She is madly obsessed with her cats and it doesn't endthere... she even inherits her will to the cats! What would theybenefit from lots and lots of money, being pets? It isn't just Madamewho has this burning obsession of the cats; there's Frou-Frou the horseand even a MOUSE, for heaven's sake! Those cats are treated like andare regarded as royalty! Now I think people are too hard on the film's'villain' Edgar the butler; he is overjoyed to hear that Madame willinherit her fortune to him - until he hears that the cats will get themoney first and and poor Edgar is dismayed, especially knowing he'lldie long before the family does. Like I said, how will a fortunebenefit cats? He plans to catnap them and later drown them - how couldhe turn the idea down when it's so easy to accomplish?! Even if it isdone out of greed? He doesn't drown them thanks to the antics of a duo of hound dogs andso begins the classy Duchess and her three fiery kittens' adventure asthey find their way back home. Along the way, they meet Abraham deLasey Guisuppe Casey Thomas O'Malley, a lovable alley-cat who fallstail over heels for Duchess, two well-to-do English geese whoseconstant hysterical laughter never fails to cheer me up on a blue dayand Abraham de Lacey Giusppe Casey Thomas O'Malley's best friend ScatCat and his gang of alley-cats. What will Edgar do when he is dismayedto find that the cats managed to return home? You'll have to watch andfind out because this movie is fun and vivacious! Full of sentiment, laughter, adventure and jazzy music... "I'm ready maestraw!" Ha ha, Ifind that so funny. The female kitten Marie says it and it's just suchan iconic quote.Certified U and suitable for children of all ages with no violence,sex/nudity or bad language - 100% clean!I'm the reviewer! I'll decide when the it's the end of the review...it's the end of the review! Ha ha!
This is a great film! Great songs, great aniamation, great cast, great plot....... in short, all the signs of a great movie! Any Disney fan or kid should DEFINATLY have it!
Aristocats is not the most classic Disney movie ever, but it is a classic to say the least. It's great for all children, since there are no scary moments. There are the usual memorable songs, and jokes for you to laugh at (of course!). It's another fun Disney movie worth watching. This is a great DVD, so don't miss out on buying it!
There are a select few cartoon films where animals or something "nothuman" is portraying human beings and I think that this film is one ofthem. Apart from a few points of the plot and the characters - thisfilm could be changed with all people rather than mainly animals.Although - it's good someone did not - I feel the cats are jolly goodin this film portraying humans! :-)This film also focuses on quite a lot of adult issues - which is ratherodd for a Disney film. It mentions alcohol*, shows a dog teachinganother dog how to attack "tresspassing" humans and it shows a male catcalled (Abraham Delacy Gieuseppe Casi Thomas) O' Malley, fancying afemale cat, in a surprisingly human and adult way.As a cartoon film - or just a film in general, I feel this is prettygood quality - the storyline and characters are especially good. Thefilm (in general) is set in France and you meet a family of cats - themother Duchess and her kittens Marie, Toulouse and Berlioz. You alsomeet the kind (rich) old woman who adores the cats, the butler Edgarand an old man (who has CLEARLY lost his marbles) called George. Thekind old woman discusses her will with George and Edgar overhears thatwhat he receives from the will he will have after the cats have it. Heis INCREDIBLY cross with this - and has an evil scheme in mind...A very cute film for every age - enjoy "Aristocats"!*Not including "Basil the Great Mouse Detective" and a few others maybewhich I cannot think of at the moment.
Engaging characters, nice animation, dynamite songs...all this and cutekitties, too. There's a lot of excellent humor, but no real menace, sodon'tworry about your little ones. The two farm dogs steal the show, eventhoughthey only appear in two scenes. The artwork has a linear quality that mayput off some people, but I find it charming.
We had the old VHS version and had been waiting for Disney to release a DVD version. Somehow we missed it so we were super glad that Amazon had a brand new copy for sale. This has been a family favorite for years and we really missed owning a copy. We're very happy with our purchase.
This review is from: The Aristocats (Special Edition) (DVD) I loved this movie. I saw it when I was a kid. Now I watch it with my 7 yr old son. We both love it.
The Aristocats is at once arguably one of the last great Disneyanimated features. It too can be seen as a harbinger of the likes ofFritz The Cat. However aside from O'Malley's swooning for a hit of that"sweet stuff," and his off screen roll in the hay with Duchesspunctuated with "what a finale!" this film lags behind its predecessorsboth narratively and artistically. There is some very nice backgroundart. The animation style is often just above a pencil test and while itaesthetically hearkens to 101 Dalmations, there's no real over-stylizedflamboyance or flair that Dalmations toyed with so beautifully. Whilethe two hounds are culturally out of place (hobo southerners in themiddle of the French countryside?) they do demonstrate some of the bestanimation in the film, with nice attention to volumes and followthrough of movement. There is otherwise some rather untidy treatment ofink and paint here, and not just that which could be chalked up to amatter of style but rather, well just sloppy. A couple walk cycles havethe characters so against-the-animation-rules gliding along, completelyignoring the rhythm of their gate. The musical numbers seem more of anexcuse to have fun on screen than serving to carry the narrative alongin any meaningful or for that matter, useful way.
This review is from: The Aristocats (Special Edition) (DVD) I bought this for my granddaughter along with two other videos, this one is her favorite. She is only two but she knows what a funny movie is.
This movie is in the old Disney fashion. This would never win an academy award but for that reason it makes a great movie for little kids. Unlike the Disney movies of the past decade, violence is very minimal to almost non-existant. The "villain" in this movie - a greedy but likable butler - is baffoonish and not prone to causing nightmares. All the music is fun and upbeat. Lots of sassy talking animals. The humor and tone is very similar to Disney's Robin Hood - another movie for good clean fun. My 2 year old LOVES the Aristocats.
