This is the story of a friendship that changes the course of rock history forever, of the fateful collision of minds between JB and KG that led to the creation of the precedent-shattering band Tenacious D, and of the two heroes quest to find the fabled Guitar Pick Of Destiny...

This review is from: Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny (DVD) The best movie ever, which happens to be the best DVD ever with the greatest bonus features of all time. Also, the soundtrack is quite possibly the most amazing soundtrack in the history of films.
Calling all D-sciples! Grab your friends, hit the theater and see thehell out of this movie. From the opening sequence until after thecredits you'll be laughing your self breathless. This movie is a wild ride through the history of the D, and not justsome bull-crap list of the things they've done, but a chronicling oftheir rise to power. I am a huge fan of Rage Kage(Kyle Gass) andJables(Jack Black), so naturally I loved the movie. It helps to know about the show they had, and their first CD, but it'sjust as funny if you don't. From the hilarious and vulgar lyrics, therocking rhythms, the massive amount of pot smoking, and the cameos, down to the outright insanity that is the story line, this is a moviefor D-sciples and newbies alike. Many of their songs are referenced, such as Two Kings, Tribute, andKielbasa to their many audio tracks like Cock Push-ups, every fan inthe audience will be saying I remember that as well as new comerssaying "That's F'ing hilarious!." I highly recommend this movie to anybody that's ever rocked out. This movie is certainly in highcompetition for being the next "This is Spinal Tap." One of the bestever.
Contrary to what the trailers would have you believe, Tenacious D in'The Pick of Destiny' is not the greatest movie in the world. It isjust a tribute. The new movie, directed by Liam Lynch (Sarah Silverman:Jesus Is Magic) and going into wide release on Nov. 22, is truly a filmfor the fans of Tenacious D. The movie starts out promising, with ayoung JB, played by Troy Gentile (who also played a young Jack Black inNacho Libre), defying his parents and calling to his hero Ronnie JamesDio (of Black Sabbath) for help. After this he heads out to Hollywoodand by the time he reaches the right one he is already grown up. Hereis where the adult JB (Jack Black, King Kong, Saving Silverman) meetsthe slacker KG (Kyle Gass, Elf) and is initially rejected by KG, whoclaims to be an accomplished rocker. From this point forward the moviesomewhat slowly progresses, with a few funny bits thrown in, as JB andKG become friends and form their band. The funny bits are mostlyreferences to songs off their original CD, so the band's fans will eatit up while others may find the sequences stupid or pointless. After alackluster performance at a local club, they discover that all thegreat bands seemed to have used the same guitar pick, they go to thelocal music store to investigate. Luckily for them, the musicstoreowner happens to know everything about the pick, which cannot bepurchased anywhere, and gives them information to get them on theirway. So the duo set off for the Rock n' Roll History Museum inSacramento to find the 'Pick of Destiny', a magical guitar pick madefrom one of Satan's teeth. On the way they break up, JB more interestedin getting the pick and KG more interested in attractive co-eds, and JBheads out on his own while KG goes to a Sorority party. When JB is onhis own he eats some trippy mushrooms and gets to meet Sasquatch, leading to one of the film's funniest sequences, while KG tries andfails to impress the college girls at the party. After this JB and KGhappen to find each other at the Rock n' Roll museum where they searchfor the pick. Once they are finished there a predictable car chaseoccurs followed shortly by the climatic showdown between the D andMephistopheles himself, who has taken a sexual liking to KG. This sceneembodies a lot of what the whole movie should've been like, and endsfar too quickly. Overall, Tenacious D in 'The Pick of Destiny' seems tobe just another mediocre entry into the 'stoner comedy' genre. It lacksa lot of the charm and laughs of the short lived HBO series aboutTenacious D, and doesn't ever live up to the rock musical that onewould expect from the opening scene. The new music by Tenacious D wasdefinitely a plus, but it would've been nice if they played some oftheir classics in the film as well. The film also had plenty of cameosby the likes of Ben Stiller, Tim Robbins, and Meatloaf, but most ofthem didn't add much to the movie. Fans of Tenacious D will appreciatethis film, as it gives JB and KG some much needed recognition, but mostothers will likely find the laughs too few and the plot too stupid totruly appreciate it. Then again, as Tenacious D once said, "it doesn'tmatter if it is good it only matters if it ROCKS!" The Pick of Destinydefinitely fulfills that promise.
This Movie is awesome! All the Journals voted the movie very badly. AndI don't know why. All Characters are brilliant and the Story is muchbetter then all the mainstream movies I've seen in the last Years. It'svery funny and has also action in it! In a view scenes I got tears inmy eyes cause of laughing. While watching it you'll see: Man, they workvery hard on this movie. they make an effort and the result ismarvelous!!! The special effects are better then in the last Star Wars movies^^Yes, they are using "bad words". Yes, the movie contains drugs. But without this it wouldn't be the D-Style. And it wouldn't work. Thisstyle is a genius form of truthfulness that makes the story and aboveall the Characters more realistic. The Movie contains, besides the amusing, 2 important things:"Friendship" and "if you have a dream: risk something, fight for it".If this Movie becomes no success in the Theaters, then it is the blameof the Media. Not enough positive recommends and not enoughcommercials.Watch this Movie cause it ROCKS! "This is just a Tribute" :)
One thing is for curtain about this film, it is by far the greatest movie ever made! But on the contrary to some, you'll only come to find that true if A) You're a long time fan of the "D". B) You're a stoner. Or C) You love crude humored films, because this film was made simply for those. It is more than likely to become a cult classic. So JB or Jables (Jack Black) runs away from home to the land of Hollywood to pursue the rock and roll life as told to do so by Dio (Himself). Eventually he runs into KG or Kage (Kyle Gass) while he's playing his acoustic guitar (Kyle can shred on an acoustic like non other by the way) by the beach side and is completely blown away becoming an instant fan. Well as things go along they become friends and start a band with each other called the Kyle Gass Project...until they discover that they both have "buttmarks" that when standing side by side it spells out Tenacious D. As things go on from there they eventually stumble on a secret legend of a pick that derived from Satan's tooth and holds magical rockin powers. Can you guess what it is? You guessed it, The Pick of Destiny. Thru-out the course of this quest you'll enjoy one great crack-up after another, including my favorite when the two split and JB gets hungry and decides to eat a bunch of mushrooms that he finds in the forest and, well you can guess where it goes from there. You'll also enjoy the great cameos they have in this film including Meat Loaf as JB's dad, Dave Grohl as Satan, Ben Stiller, Tim Robbins and a bunch of other familiar faces. Also on this DVD, be sure to check out all of the special features, which include some good deleted scenes and outtakes, commentary with Jack Black and Kyle Gass, studio sessions, the making of the video for "The Pick of Destiny" and the music video itself. So besides the fact that this is the best movie ever made, it's for sure a great rock opera comedy that will rock your face off! Have fun.
I won't go too far into this, just to say that I saw it during a sneakpreview at University of Illinois at Springfield with a friend of minea couple weeks back.I've listened to the albums, and have heard a lot of the live material,so I figured this would be great. It certainly delivered on the comedy part. As soon as Spumco'scontribution was on screen, the laughing started, and it basicallydidn't stop throughout the film.I'm not going to mention the better parts of it, as I wanted to keepthis spoiler free. But, if you've heard and enjoyed their work, go.It's a great spin on their work. The inside jokes and direct referencesare great. If you haven't, it's still funny enough to enjoy on its ownmerits.Oh, and by the way - stay through the credits.
Originally I was a Tenacious D fan of their first album and naturallylistened to a few tracks off The P.O.D. and was rather disappointed. After watching the movie, my view was changed. The movie is prettyfunny from beginning to the end and found my self engaged in it eventhough it was really was a stupid storyline because of the attitudesthat KG and Jaybles portray in the movie. Much more entertaining and enjoyable than movies I have seen in thetheaters lately. ex. Saw III (dull and dragging), Casino Royale (way tohomo-erotic) which in prior installments I have really enjoyed If you enjoyed Borat, you will enjoy the tale of The Greatest Band onEarth
This masterpiece is an underrated work of genius. Fans of the HBO series should love this. J.B. is so cool & K.G. is so raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad. ROCK ON
For all of you older people out there who have not caught up with theMTV Generation, Tenacious D is the rock band of Jack Black of 'Schoolof Rock' and 'Shallow Hal' fame. He teamed up with his mate Kyle Gassand together the two of them created a 'cult' band.Tenacious D in: The Pick of Destiny is a film about the fictionalaccount of how the band formed. The film starts off with a hilarious song sung by Jack Black, depictinghis life as a child in a religious family who think of rock as "TheDevil's Music". Rock is JB's life and he feels that if his family won'taccept that then he will run away from home. And he does just that. Many years pass as JB travels through LA, he meets a street guitaristKG. Thinking that KG is a famous rock star, JB decides to 'audition'for KG's so-called band. The two soon discover that fate has lead themto each other through unusual circumstances.Thereafter, the film takes a giant leap into absolute ridiculousness. The new partners in crime go on a quest for 'The Pick of Destiny", aguitar pick that has allowed all the legendary rock stars of today toplay outstanding music that they had never heard before. The soundtrack features songs by Tenacious D and is a great addition tothe film. Obviously this film is not meant to be taken seriously, but Idid not think it was executed very well.Jack Black has been a real disappointment to me lately. He is a comedicgenius yet he is wasting his time on rubbish films. His most recent,The Holiday, dumbed him down so much that it was hard to believe thatthis was actually Jack Black. He was not allowed to show off hiscomedic abilities and was just in the film for lame comic relief. However, this film was obviously made for fans of Black and Gass's bandTenacious D and will surely be loved by all of them. With its crudehumour and offensiveness, Tenacious D definitely won't give Borat a runfor his money but will still entertain fans of the "D".5/10
Jack Black is not funny. All he seems able to do is shout a lot andthrow in the occasional profanity, sometimes for variety doing it witha contrived, "Deliverance" type drone in his voice.Tenacious D, or Tedious D, has to be one of the most insipid, uninspired and uncreative concepts of all time. Music parodies havebeen done before and have managed to be both musically sound andentertaining comedies - refer to the Bad News films from the UK, or,even better, the numerous efforts of Christopher Guest and his manyfriends. If you are somehow entertained by Jack Black's overweight and out ofdate concepts of what is funny, knock yourself out. But remember this -ever dollar spent on a Jack Black film is a dollar not spent on anactor or film which has talent.
This review is from: Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny (DVD) I knew nothing whatsoever of Tenacious D before I watched this movie. And it did not matter. I laughed until I SCREAMED! The first 2 scenes and the rockoff with "Beelzeboss" are murder! I had to get up and jump up and down to get all the laughter out!
Tenacious D rock, director Liam Lynch rocks, and the old HBO TV showrocks, so to say that I was looking forward to this film is anunderstatement. Making Meatloaf JB's father was a stroke of genius, butsadly nothing to do after the beginning his character disappears fromthe film (except for a lame hallucination). Dio having a cameo wasgreat too sadly the movie can't live up to the admittedly greatbeginning opting to go the route of lame jokes and an uninspired plot.(roadtrip to find a fabled guitar pick made from Satan's tooth)Tenacious D deserves much better than this. Don't know if I'd evenrecommend it to die hard fans of the D, as owning the Masterworkscollection, the first Cd, and seeing them in concert multiple times, I,myself might fall into that category. This movie definitely didn't rockmy (expletive deleted) socks off.My Grade: D+
After all the hype, and after loving the first album, I thought I'd give the film a go. It isn't too bad, I was expecting more belly laughs than I got, but it is a genuinely amusing film that will kill a few hours on a Sunday afternoon. A few moments do make you chuckle out loud and there are some great cameos. Jack Black is his usual gurning, swearing, hilarious self and KG comes out with some great lines as well. Don't expect too much, but do expect a great film that doesn't take itself too seriously and that will raise a smile.Feel free to check out my blog which can be found on my profile page.
Jack Black is a comedic genius! Who else could star in two really dumb movies(Pick of Destiny and Nacho Libre) and make them both work so well. This is much funnier than I expected it to be. The DVD transfer is very good with some cool and funny extras.
Any fans of The D will enjoy this movie, and anyone who has never heard of Tenacious D will be converted. Great music will likely catapult this film to be in the same vein as the Rocky Horror Picture Show, where people will attend screenings and sing along with The Best Movie Soundtrack in the World. It tells the story of how Kage and Jables came to be The D, and their adventure trying to find the Pick of Destiny. Great musical cameos by Meatloaf, Ronnie James Dio and Dave Grohl just put it over the top. Grohl is absolutley brilliant as The Demon. Watching him play drums is like watching Picasso paint -- sheer genius. And even more so since he's wearing a devil costume. I highly reccomend this film.
It would have been a lot funnier to sit in the theater and listen tothe original Tenacious D CD: that should really tell fans all they needto know about this movie. It's just not as funny as we've heard fromthese guys before.Obviously plot isn't important to a movie like this, but I at leastexpected some laughs. In fact there were no more than a handful, and Icaught myself thinking several times how disappointed I was. I think my(free preview!) audience agreed: there were a bunch of awkwardsilences.I'd recommend throwing on the old Tenacious D album instead.
See, i knew this movie would be awesome as hell, but I'm also a hugetenacious d fan. when, i went to see it, a lot of people left. See, alot of the people who will go and see this are all probably all fans ofblack's previous works, like Nacho Libre & School of Rock, well I'mhere to tell, this has nothing to do with those films. But if u get theTD style of humor, you'll think it's hilarious, and it falls intoseveral different categories, it could be a stoner movie, a musical, ametal salute, or anything, all i know is that this movie f**kingrocked, But i suggest u leave the kids at home 4 this 1! There are alsoawesome cameo appearances by meatloaf, Ronnie James dio, Ben stiller, and Tim Robbins, very awesome, rock on!
I caught this at an advanced screening and i have to say that this is acontender for film of the year. The shear stupidity and cutting edgesoundtrack bring this film into my top 5 list. The story starts outwith a young JB and him living with his religious family, he escapeshis father with the help of Dio and embarks to find a rock mentor. Ashe grows older (Jack Black) he meets KG (Kyle Gass), a rocking, lyingguitar player in Venice beach. They come to here about a magical pickcalled the pick of destiny. They embark on a quest to find the pick andon the way get into all kinds of trouble. JB gets high on magicmushrooms and meets sasquatch, KG goes to a fraternity party. The filmhas some amazing cameo appearances such as meatloaf (JBs Father), BenStiller (Guitar store worker) and Tim Robbins as a crippled foreigner. It is the story of the rise of Tenacious D and how they came about.Overall i gave this film 10/10 as it is what i love in a film-Stupid,kick-ass soundtrack and a host of celebrity cameos. Long LiveThe D!
It's the D. After watching the complete master works and remembering they were in BioDome, seeing the movie was awesome. Great movie, not a classic but worth buying.
If you know Tenacious D, you will love this movie. If you don't know it that well, you may get a little lost, but overall its one funny movie. After seeing Jack Black in King Kong we know that his acting in this movie is purposely over done and extremely out of control. The two re-unite to make their best venture yet. And if you think about the ridiculous plot, you can tell it's not all pot jokes and swearing.
