The true life story of Ralph Waldo Petey Greene Jr. In the mid-to-late 1960s, in Washington, D.C., vibrant soul music and exploding social consciousness were combining to unique and powerful effect. It was the place and time for Petey to fully express himself - sometimes to outrageous effect - and tell it like it is. With the support of his irrepressible and tempestuous girlfriend Vernell, the newly minted ex-con talks his way into an on-air radio gig. He forges a friendship and a partnership with fellow prison inmate Milos brother Dewey Hughes. From the first wild morning on the air, Petey relies on the more straight-laced Dewey to run interference at WOL-AM, where Dewey is the program director. At the station, Petey becomes an iconic radio personality, surpassing even the established popularity of his fellow disc jockeys, Nighthawk and Sunny Jim. Combining biting humor with social commentary, Petey openly courts controversy for station owner E.G. Sonderling. Petey was determined to make not just himself but his community heard during an exciting and turbulent period in American history. As Peteys voice, humor, and spirit surge across the airwaves with the vitality of the era, listeners tune in to hear not only incredible music but also a man speaking directly to them about race and power in America like few people ever have. Through the years, Peteys The truth just is style --- on - and off-air - would redefine both Petey and Dewey, and empower each to become the man he would most like to be.
This movie was ans still is the best movie i have seen all year.Thecomedy, drama and acting was brilliant. The only thing I HATED aboutthis movie is the fact that i had to travel 30 miles to see it. Why wasthis in selected theaters only. Is it because no one wanted to seeit? Was the movie not good enough? Or is it that they are scared ofanother minority possibly winning an Oscar? Why is it that Who's yourCaddy one of the dumbest movies out there is in every theater and oneof the greatest movies is not.I don't think this is coincidence. Pleasego out and support this movie no matter how far you have to drive. It'sworth it I promise.
Worthwhile for the nostalgic appeal of the vintage costumes, retro afros and classic R&B soundtrack alone.
While Don Cheadle is mesmerizing as the main/title character (based ona true story/man), the movie falls short of holding up to his quality. It's not that the other actors don't reach his enthusiasm or screenpower/performance. It might be that the movie tries to be too generalabout things. One plot thread is resolved, just by a big (real) eventthat happens. Pretty easy way out I'd say, especially for a movie thatshould be more about confrontation (with a leading man like that).Another let-down is the fact, that the story rushes through things, packing them together and making them more "movie" like. True mixingwith a bit of fiction, as I assume, which is not always a bad thing. It's called artistic license, doesn't it? Still you might feel cheatedat the end of this movie and I'm here to (sort of) warn you
A good movie about a powerful friendship, and it brings a bygone era back to life.
Speaks powerfully to audiences with its potent blend of extraordinary performances and engaging soundtrack.
Petey Greene: I'll tell it to the hot, I'll tell it to the cold. I'lltell it to the young, I'll tell it to the old. I don't want nolaughin', I don't want no cryin', and most of all, no signifyin'. Thisis Petey Greene's Washington. What a fascinating person Petey Greene was. What an important personPetey Greene. Sure he might have just seemed like a sharp-wittedloud-mouth smart-ass, but his courage to speak out against the racialinjustices of the 60s broke ground for later radio disjockeys such asHoward Stern, Don Imus and a lot more. 'Talk to Me', Kasi Lemmon'slatest feature chronicling the rise and fall of radio dis-jockey turnedtalk show host Petey Greene is flawed but moving. The film's biggest problem lies in the writing. There's a few parts inthe middle of the film that really drag. The dialogue is realistic andoften quite funny. Kasi Lemmons directing is adequate, while the castis sensational. Don Cheadle is hysterical and compelling all at thesame time. He perfectly embodies Greene, doesn't create an over-the-topcharacter but a man we can relate and sympathize with. Themulti-talented Chitwel Ejofor (Kinky Boots, Children of Men) is just asgood in a less showy role as Greene's manager, and Tarj P. Henson isamusing to say the least as Greene's girlfriend. Martin Sheen and MikeEpps are solid in their small roles, and Cedric the Entertainer isdecent in a role that really doesn't require much acting range. All in all, 'Talk to Me' is a powerful movie wrapped around anintriguing real-life story. Grade: B+
I think I liked the first half of the movie better, but the acting was terrific. If anything, you have to see it JUST for Don Cheadle's performance. And his girlfriend is hilariously good in it, too.Martin Sheen has a great part, too, and also the guy who played Dewey. If you don't like the raw language, not recommended.
For all the wild controversy that Petey ignited in his time, Talk to Me ends up being as generic and watered-down as its title.
This is a great movie-one of the best I have seen in years. You are just riveted by the story and waiting for the next thing Petey Green (Don Cheadle) is going to say. You also can't wait to see how other people in the story react to Petey, because that is always funny. Chiwetel Ejiofor's portrayal of Dewey Hughes is very strong, making you both like and dislike him at the same time. Taraji P. Henson (Petey's girlfriend, Vernell) was hysterical. I was laughing pretty much throughout the movie. You do have to listen closely...some of the jokes are subtle and take a few seconds to sink in. The music was also great. This is NOT for kids: very bad language and a couple pretty steamy scenes.
Aside from the subtleties found in Cheadle and Ejiofor's performances, this is biopic bombast.
this is recommended generally towards mature family viewing andespecially to males.women, as a specific decade class, are veryexceptionally defined here, however it all resumes towards Don Cheadleand Chiwetel Ejiofor ego fight and the human rights movement inAmerica. this is a must see regardless of color or race not at leastbecause is very thought full as much as entertaining.i am still getting around in getting used to Don Cheadle here. waydifferent posture then in "hotel Rwanda" or "crash" and he justdemonstrates his excellent mimic skills. the next already DenzelWashington . his expressions(both facial and body language), wellexpressed inner-thoughts within the dialogs to be delivered, and deepstares are giving the viewer very soul-full, sentimental and emotionalintriguing thoughts, regardless if one , as individual, could or couldNOT relate to the subject matter. Chiwetel Ejiofor deliversexceptionally as well, for his carrier this will be a major feature tobe remember as well.it is a pleasure to watch them "fight it out" whilethey gain a greater and balanced respect for each other.there are some comic relief moments, very familiar funny sort ofspeak.the movie never looses focus and secondary plots are flowing VERYnatural in defining better even the characters not so relevant to themain story. this is a great example of how cinematography can create"new" while keeping the "old". this has a great replay value, definitely worth for collectors!
What I'm hoping flies under the radar is the unexpected and disappointing transformation of Kasi Lemmons, whose previous pitch-black, haunted sensibility barely makes an appearance in her highest-profile film.
Don Cheadle should have been given an Oscar nod for this true to life bio pic about Petey Greene. It was such a small film with barely any publicity, it seems to have gotten lost in the shuffle. Don does some of his best work in this movie. I lived in Washington doing the heyday of Mr. Greene and Don captured his persona to a T.
As Ralph Waldo Petey Greene Jr., who became a one-man inner-city mediaexplosion in Washington, D.C., starting in the late '60s, Don Cheadleis superb. Petey doesn't just say that word  he means it. He wins overDewey Hughes (Chiwetel Ejiofor), the slick, smart program director whois revealed to be a lot less of an stiff than he appears. Directed byKasi Lemmons , Talk to Me digs into the relationship between Petey andDewey, whose love/hate relationship is fascinating to watch. The twoactors are marvelous. As crazy as he looks in those suits, Cheadle'snever looks anything but cool. The rest of the cast is solid, but theymostly stay out of the way of the leads.
'Talk to Me' is a better-than-paint-by-numbers Hollywood biopic of DC-area DJ Ralph Waldo 'Petey' Greene. I loved the the first-half of the movie. I'd pay to watch Don Cheadle read the phone book. He's electric in the parts where he's formulating his post-prison career, breaking into the DJ-ing business and building bonds with the DC community. Likewise, I'm a very big Chiwetel Ejiofor fan (if you saw Dirty Pretty Things, you know why). He, too, excels here, especially in the scene where he locks morning DJ Sunny Jim Kelsey (played by the underrated and always excellent Vondie Curtis-Hall) in his office in order to spring Cheadle's Green onto the air. That's the movie's best scene.Well, it's the best scene without Taraji P. Henson. Taraji is a force of nature. With apologies to Don Cheadle - one of the finest working actors today - Taraji rips the movie away from him whenever she's on the screen. For those of you asking "Where have I seen her before?" - She's 'Shug' to Terrence Howard's Djay in Craig Brewer's 2005 masterpiece, Hustle & Flow (Widescreen Edition) - a brilliant meditation on the creative process.
I've been waiting to see this movie since I saw the trailer for it. It's well worth the wait. The movie is both funny as hell and touching. It literally takes you to that time in history. The movie starts in 1966. Don Cheadle plays an ex-con turn successful radio DJ. He partner's with Taraji Henson's character, taking them to the top. Eventually, like everyone else on E! True Hollywood Stories, success splits them up. He promises his audience that he'll tell the truth. Well, that's what the movie delivers in spades-the truth. Truth about a time in history which turned America around. Truth about a two men going into a partnership that turned into a friendship. Cheadle makes this movie funny. It's not just what he says but what he does too. I can't say more, it'll ruin it. You'll be touched more by the moments in the movie, especially, with MLK's death. You'll also be moved by Cheadle and Henson's transformation through some trying times. This is a great movie worth seeing. It's really funny and touching at the same time.
Even if you are not from DC and have no idea who Ralph Petey Green was, see the movie just for the entertainment. It was absolutely the best!! Don of course, put his in!! Taraji was superb, and don't sleep on Chiwetel!!!! Definitely one for the DVD collection!
he mood shifts awkwardly from broad comedy to melodrama and social commentary.
Watching it becomes an exercise in frustration when a potentially great movie winds up buried inside a just OK one.
Don Cheadle and Chiwetel Ejiofor are two of the best actors of my generation working today, period.
