Determined to find out the true effects of marijuana on the human body, stand-up comedian and former Stoner of the Year Doug Benson documents his experience avoiding pot for 30 days and then consuming massive amounts of the drug for 30 days. More than just an amusing story of one mans quest to get superhigh, this documentary also examines the hotly contested debate over medical marijuana use.

Doug Benson, a stand-up comic you may know from VH1, got the idea tomake a documentary about himself smoking weed for 30 days. Ya know, just like Morgan Spurlock from Super-size Me where he ate McDonald'sfor 30 straight days. This has got to be one of the coolest ideas for adocumentary in the history of documentaries. It was a prettyinteresting flick, but unfortunately from a person who makes peoplelaugh for a living, not very funny. The flick starts off with Doug not smoking for 30 days and then oncethat 30 day sequence ends he begins to smoke constantly for the next 30days. With each sequence he's subject to a bunch of tests, from takingthe SATs to a psychic test. Also, he doesn't quit his day job whilehe's making the film. You get to see him perform his acts when he hasthem booked, high or not.Doug Benson, is a pretty good comic. He has his own slightlyflamboyant, immature style, that he's got down pretty well. He made mesmile a few times and possibly giggle once or twice, but none of it wasreally that funny. He talks about pot, about how it's cool and hemisses it, and that's about it. But if you're a fan of Doug's or standup comedy, you should definitely find this flick funny. The twofunniest scenes for me was when he wasn't on stage telling jokes, butwhen one of the producers was making a mess of Doug's apartment becauseof his butter fingers. And a fart gag with some tuba's was nice.Doug, even before he began this little experiment, was a pot-head.There's no doubt about it. And this is what makes the whole process notso intriguing. If you know a seasoned burn-out, you know they tend tojust get stoned. They can easily be high in almost any situation. IfDoug wasn't such a pot-head, it would have been much more entertaining.Morgan Spurlock was a very healthy person, so eating McDonald's nonstopwould have drastic affects. But since Doug is a pot-head in real-lifethis little 30 day bender isn't really anything too amazing to watch. He's such a veteran smoker that he doesn't exhibit any humorousside-effects. You don't see him paranoid, see him geek-out in alaughing fit, seeing him cough his brains out etc. etc. Pretty much allthe things that's made any Cheech and Chong flick incredibly funny. ButI do thank him for being a pot-head, if he wasn't this movie probablywould never have been made.Super High Me, was a cool documentary that gave some neat informationconcerning California laws, the history on Marijuana Dispensaries inCalifornia, and how many types of ways you can actually get high byTHC. Lip balm. Believe it.I firmly believe that if Doug wasn't a seasoned smoker this film wouldhave been much more funny. If you've seen one glassy-eyed pot-headyou've seen them all, and unfortunately his smoking didn't help makehis stand-up act any funnier either. Then again, maybe I'm to blame.Maybe I need to lighten up and just light one up.
So you think it's all gonna be yuks? Nah. It's a look into one man's life and one nation's policies. It's also hilario-donkulous. Why does Doug smoke? How does he get it? How do other people get it? What are the facts and stats involved with medicinal marijuana? When is legal pot illegal? What effect does constant smoking have on one man, and what effects does NOT smoking have? What does 420 mean? All of these questions except for the 420 thing will be answered. This thing is packed with facts and insight and laughs. So see it, dorks!rg
I can't look at Doug Benson and take him seriously. Here's a guy wholooks like he's been beaten in the face with a shovel most of his lifeand has the personality of a zombie, and yet people pay to see hiscomedy act. I don't get it. Not only do I dislike Doug, but marijuanais the most boring, over-hyped drug out there, in my opinion. Pot isthe Nikes brand of drugs and everyone blindly smokes it. It's marijuanathat lead to the creation of the uncreatively named production companythat backed this experiment, named the 420 Productions LLC. There'smultiple references to 420 throughout the movie, as well, just in caseyou missed the last ten times it was referenced. Who are these"doctors" he's speaking to anyways? Telling Doug to complete simplememory-tasks is something you try to test a 5 year old. No wonderthere's an influx of comedians or comedian wannabe's with this type ofhumor selling tickets; virtually anyone can become a jokey guy with apot addiction. The movie was kind of lame, but there were some funnymoments to it. There really was no message to convey because even asdispensaries continue to multiply in CA, you still have issuesremembering details and get decreased lung capacity. I would onlyrecommend the movie to stoners because the rest of us who don't careabout the plight of the pot-lawyers will get bored quickly.
This film is a lighthearted, funny, and wholesome presentation of (1)the conflict between state medical marijuana laws and federal anti-druglaws, and (2) the evidence that marijuana can't do you much harm. Ifyou are steeped in cannabis culture or follow legal developmentsconcerning medical marijuana, none of the information will be new toyou. You already know that the war on drugs is out of step with thescience about cannabis use, and you know the current state of the lawaffecting medical dispensaries. Benson is likable and wholesome, andthe movie is pleasant and funny. Because the movie is not dense orrighteous, it has the capacity to reach interested folks who aren'talready in the know and don't want to hear a rant about legalization.
Overall it was interesting and funny. It had some slow moments and spent too much time on California's prop 215. Doug Benson looks the same stone as he does sober, and his jokes didn't suffer when he wasn't high. It's worth an hour and half of your time to for a few good laughs.
This review is from: Super High Me (DVD) While there aren't many stand-up comedians that I find to be terribly funny, Doug Benson's experiment with getting high for a month straight provided many chuckles. More importantly, it provided insight on the movement to expand Medical Marijuana in California and the DEA repression they face. This film could've easily become a documentary on the Medical Marijuana movement, and hopefully some filmmakers will make a movie that focuses on that struggle. Benson's 30 days of smoking and eating herb was inspired by the 30 miserable days Morgan Spurlock spent eating fast food in Super Size Me (another film I'd highly recommend). I especially enjoyed Benson's visits to places like the "420 Temple", and a trip he made to Vancouver to visit the "Prince of Pot" - Marc Emery. Emery is a former seed distributor and the editor of the excellent "Cannabis Culture" magazine (which isn't available through Amazon, but can be found at most bookstores)."Super High Me" also introduces us to some Medical Marijuana patients, including a young woman who first started using it at the age of 17 when she was going through her cancer treatments. It's a crime that cannabis isn't legally available to anyone who wants it for medicinal, spiritual, or recreational reasons. Pot is forbidden because big pharmaceutical companies don't have a patent on it.People who want to explore more of the political, social and economic issues involving marijuana will want to check out DVDs like:Emperor of Hemp: Every Revolution Needs a HeroGrassAmerican Drug War: The Last White HopeBooks:The Benefits of Marijuana: Physical, Psychological & SpiritualCannabis CultureTo keep up on all sorts of issues, media material, and pot gatherings:High TimesAnd a couple of DVDs to help us chant down Babylon:Manufacturing Consent - Noam Chomsky and the MediaThe CorporationSongs of Freedom
Yesterday, 2/27/2009, I was out with a buddy of mine getting his tattoodone. The artist who was doing the art work for him also did myretirement tattoo. Once "Mark" saw me he said, "HEY JOHN! HAVE YOU SEENTHIS MOVIE 'SUPER HIGH ME'??" I looked at it and said, "HELL KNOW! IDON'T WATCH CRAP LIKE THAT! WHY?" He said, "DUDE! THEY TALK ALL SORTSOF SH*T ABOUT YOU ON THIS MOVIE-THEY REALLY DON'T LIKE YOU!" I said,"what's it about???" Mark, the artist said, "it's about medicalmarijuana!" The other cops in the room with us started to laugh andscream, "That's the Officer Smith we know and love! He can put the fearof God in any thug and make a grown convict cry!!" Now, for all youviewers out in TV land, I have not seen the movie yet. However, foryour info; I retired in Decemeber of 2006, after The City Doctors foundout I broke my back on duty when I was stuck by a car chasing agangster with a gun out on Victory Blvd-so I have really lost touchwith the all the dopers in North Hollywood-I am kinda out of the loopon this.Prior to my retirement I was the cop in North Hollywood from LAPD whoshut down and arrested many of the medical pot people in the StudioCity and North Hollywood area of Los Angeles.NO! I DON'T SMOKE OR TAKE YOUR CRAP TO HELP WITH THE PAIN OF MY BROKENBACK! I go to the gym and have recovered just fine and better now than I waswhen I was taking all your dope away and throwing you idiots in jail!DAMN THAT WAS FUN! Every now and then since I retired, I get a messagefrom some LAPD Dope cop who see's my photo still posted on your websites, posted in some pot store, or something run by the potheads-these police officers all call to warn me for "officer safety"reasons. I joke with them and laugh like crazy at the whole thing.I just wanted to thank all my "Friends" in the medical pot business,AND THOSE WHO DID THIS MOVIE for all the added status you have given mebefore and now in my retirement!By doing this movie and posting my photo on line you keep my status asa LAPD COPPER alive and well! Things like this have really helped meout in since my retirement from the Los Angeles Police Department! I nolonger live in California or Los Angeles for that fact I moved fromthat miserable state and city. I moved to a state/city where there isNO CHANCE of you setting up any of this crap; The Great State of-Texas! I took my pension (which is great by the way!) and all my income out ofCalifornia and Los Angeles- too bad both are going broke! I'm livingthe good life these days! When I show photos from your pot clubs and movies like this to my newcommunity and to law enforcement groups in Texas; they all shake theirheads in disgust and say "NOT IN OUR STATE!" I have even gotten joboffers to work in the law enforcement in Texas-THANKS SO MUCH! To badyour state and city are urban combat zones! I still think you are abunch of dope dealers and scum bags however you can have that miserablestate and City of Los Angeles-you dope dealers, that corrupt mayor, andcorrupt LA city government all deserve each other! As for me; I amloving it!!! So if you ever make it to Texas-'SMILE! The eyes of Texasare upon you!!!" Who knows-it maybe me who puts your tail ends in jailagain- for ol time sake! Retired Officer J. Determined to find out the true effects of marijuana on the human body,stand-up comedian and former Stoner of the Year Doug Benson documentshis experience avoiding pot for 30 days and then consuming massiveamounts of the drug for 30 days. This is my first review for a documentary, so I try to review it to thebest of my ability... Documentaries, by my understanding, are supposedto inform you of a situation, while showing multiple examples of it. Byseeing the plot, I actually would find this an interesting film, as Iwould have no idea what would happen to this guy. Super Size Me wasinformational, and showed what happened to a guy who ate McDonald's for30 days straight. With marijuana, the outcome would be mostinteresting, especially how the drug is considered the safest. By theend of the film, he literally had no affects from it and the filmending with him standing on stage, admitting he wanted to smokeanother. That's how bad the film was, and I rated it one higher justbecause I found the guy pretty funny.. I don't recommend. 2/10.
It's funny, informative, and it's about Marijuana... I've learned more aspects of Marijuana in this movie, than my experience of using Marijuana.
For fans of Doug Benson's comedy, be it stand-up or "Best Week Ever",you'll get more out of this documentary on him as he goes 30 days withweed and 30 days without then other viewers. If one goes into the filmexpecting an intelligent documentary on the pros Vs. cons of weedyou'll be vastly disappointed. One only needs to know that this wasmade 'in cahoots' (the film's words not mine) with 420 Partners Llc toknow which side of the fence this film firmly sits on and thus skewsthe 'infomation' in that direction and to suit it's need. Propaganda ina way, not to say it's not (vaquely) entertaining in bits and pieces,it is. Just go into the film knowing that it's slanted and you'll befine. My Grade: C-
This movie was mediocre to say the least. I love the idea of someone trying to get high for 30 days and making a scientific experiment out of it but I think Doug should have just stuck with that. The truth is, he's not really that funny; his comedy acts, which was 75% of the movie, was the worste part. If I were making this movie I would have focused much more on the science. I did think that the movie was informative in a way and I must give Doug some credit for being creative enough to think about testing his psychosis abilities before and after he was high. Overall though, I would only recommend this movie to people who are truely interested in marijuana and I would also say to try at all costs to rent it because you probably won't want to watch it more than once.
Ignore the writing on the cover that says this is up there in the ranks of Cheech & Chong ... this doesnt compare.... it's a documentary about a comedian who doesn't smoke pot for 30 days, then smokes pot for the next 30 days.... but I couldn't really see any point to this other then promoting the comedian, and a political stance against the DEA.It has a few funny jokes, but not enough for me to think it was nothing but a political argument documentary.
If you have ever smoked, you should watch this. If you have never smoked and want to be informed you should also watch this movie.
This movie is hilarious if you are or were a pothead. I used to be, many years ago, and found it pretty funny.
I saw this film in its Regional Premiere at the SXSW Film Festival. Thepoint of the film seems to be to openly steal Morgan Spurlock's 30-Daypremise from Super Size Me and apply to stoner comedian Doug Bensonbeing stoned for 30 days. It lacks the originality of Spurlock'spremise. For one, many people spend every day stoned and the affectsare well-known. I agree with their premise that that they want to showthat marijuana doesn't do much harm to human health and thereforeshould be legalized. But if this is the best they can do, it shouldperhaps offer some caution about the degree to which marijuana effectscognitive thinking skills and behavior. While it is a funny film attimes, it adds little to the political debate - unlike the Spurlockfilm - and doesn't really offer anything new or interesting. As the filmmakers (including Benson and director Blieden) volunteeredduring their Q & A after the film, they really didn't know what sort offilm they wanted to make. Did they want to tell of Benson's humorous30-day stoned journey? Did they want to make a political film about thedispute between state and federal authorities on Marijuana legalizationin California? Or did they want to make a club film about Benson'scomedy act during the period of his 30-day experiment? They couldn'treally decide, so they combined all three efforts and the film showsthat lack of a clear direction. Also, they throw in all of these cameos with Benson's comedian buddiesthat add almost nothing to the film. Incidentally, their 10th amendmentConstitutional arguments are poorly presented since there is a longtradition of Federal legal supremacy based on Article 4, section 2 ofthe Constitution which has been the basis of America's Federal systemof government for centuries. So it is good for a few laughs and its own political diatribe, but itcould have been much better. One of the best points that they make isthat medical marijuana is, in many cases, an excuse for recreationaldrug usage. They imply that it is sort of farce and real debate shouldbe over the legalization of recreational use. If we want to have thatdebate, let's find better film makers and other advocates to make thatargument, because this barely qualifies as a political documentary. Irecommend the film "Grass" which is a much better film and presents afascinating history of the prohibition of marijuana in the U.S.
After being told to watch this by various of my stoner friends, idecided to watch it on youtube. This film is a joke turned documentary,a parody of Super Size Me but with cannabis instead of MC Donald's.What i expected was to watch this guy smoke tons of weed and coversubjects related to it, both of which are seldomely met. The truth is,Super High Me consists mostly of Doug Benson stand up act. So for themajority, we just get jokes about being high with a pointless celebrityappearance here and there, with very little concerning the legislationof cannabis. The main point is this, watching someone be sober for 30days, then be stoned for 30 days, isn't exactly what i'd callentertainment or quality film-making.There's only about 3/4 tests. One for psychic ability (is there apoint?), One for SAT scores, One for Sperm Count, and one for basicintelligence i guess you'd say. Each of these are covered with about30-40 seconds of screen time, twice in the movie, so your obviously notgetting a lot of information for the majority. This movie pretty muchjust glamorizes California throughout, cause thats the subject mostcovered. Yes they have dispendencys with different types of pot, yesthey have DEA take downs, and yes they have medical mary jane. Icovered that in a, probably grammar incorrect, sentence. Here, itscovered for about 12-18 minutes, very boring. And for a movie calledSuper High Me, i expected to see way more usage. There's a surprisinglack of content, and as i said before, the majority of the movie is hisstand up act.The actual production is pretty limited. Basically a guy follows Dougaround with a camera, not much else, no interview shots are planned oranything like a normal documentary, the only shot setups i reallynoticed are those of his stand up act, so pretty much its just a guywith a camera filming people talking. No questions are really asked, instead we just have stoners talking about gibberish regarding pot(Although that pot prince guy was pretty hilarious). The sound balanceis uneven, at times music will play and render a speaker inaudible. Theinterviewees don't exactly have any significance, at one point onethere is Brian Posehn, who just eats his burger, doesn't say crap, andthe scene ends, and also one with his co-star Sarah Silverman, justtaking some type of rip from some type of vaporizer, the guitarists ofjanes addiction is there playing some chords not saying a thing, thescene ends. This is pretty much proof that someone in the crew has tobe sober for a movie to be good.So pretty much all you have here is stand up, which at times, isactually pretty funny. The actual focus of the documentary, isn'texactly 'focused'. Stoners just aren't that interesting, they smokepot, and sit back and be lazy, thats about it. I'm a pothead who smokespretty damn often, and i wasn't exactly impressed. Smoke a blunt andwatch something a little bit more worthwhile like half baked or haroldand kumar, this isn't really a entertaining or groundbreakingdocumentary. If your really interested in the effects and culture ofcannabis, check out bbc's show Should I Smoke Dope, its pretty muchwhat this should have been.
Super High MeBoth covers have the same DVD inside.. so no need to get the other cover. I mean if your going all in you might as well go ALL IN..right? Thats what this moves does...it goes all in on takeing a punch line to the extreme. The movie itself as a whole is worth watching again and again.. to catch the parts you missed while laughing over before. This movie is an instant classic in the vein of Cheech and Chong, Half Baked, and other great "stoner" flicks...but this movie also gives you some nice nuggets of info along the way as well. So its just more then the average dude gets baked and makes jokes movie...but he does get really really baked so don't worry about that. ;)Its a great DVD to buy...or puff puff buy for a friend. ;)
I am simply reviewing the idea, since it will be a month till this flick comes out. And I can tell you what my long bouts with weed have resulted in. Total lethargy! Very low energy, paranoia and isolationism. Which of course rolls into a mild, yet building depression. That being said, I still love it! I started at 13 (28 years ago) and only stopped along the way due to inadequate sources and a need to reset my weedometer so I can actually enjoy it again. The first few days is always the best. And then my immunity threshold builds. If I could smoke once or twice a week I would, but I'm an all-or-nothing kinda guy.I spent 2 weeks in amsterdam for the whole pot experience (not to mention a lousy 1st-time visit to a hooker, shhh) and regardless of how good the herbs are, you still need to wait at least 5 or 6 hours between tokes to really feel the buzz. I was bored as hell after a few days and did a lot of coughing. They sell joints there mixed with tobacco. Nasty! And I'm a smoker. I forwent the tobaccy mixture and said gimme the hard stuff. At least they had mushrooms to pepper the pot-downtime. Oooh, I may have a new idea for a movie yet. Super Shroom me.-Jason Lang*#$!&
I had seen Super High Me on the shelves of my local video store butnever would have rented it. I mean it is one of those movies that youcan look at the cover and know exactly what you're in for and I'm notbig on pot and I think something like this is just dumb. So why did Iend up seeing it? Well it premiered on Netflix and I guess I hadnothing better to do and thought I would give it a chance but itprovided exactly what I thought. In all honestly it wasn't quite thecomplete waste that I thought it would be. I guess I have to give somecredit to film maker, star, writer and comic Brian Unger for at leasttrying to work in some actual information and documentary worthyinformation by tackling the legalization and distribution of pot inCalifornia but I really don't thin anyone is going to come away fromthis educated or feel any differently about pot if you like it or hate.Work in some dirty comedy routines with a lot of four letter words andI think stoners will love the movie but the average movie watcher willgroan and be done with the whole thing in the first 15 minutes. WhileUnger touches on the medical side effects of what he's doing he hardlymakes it known because clearly as a stoner he supports pot andlegalization and everything he is doing. He spends more time findingdifferent ways to smoke it and promote it. The film is watchable if notjust barely and I hope we don't have to sit through anything else hedoes and I hope the film's namesake Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me)sues him for taking a truly great film and turning it into stonertrash. Skip this unless you're high and wanna giggle like Beavis andButthead. 5/10
I love DB and was really excited for this movie. It was a little bit of a letdown :(
