Great Idea... Failed in the execution

This wanted to be a really good movie. I wanted this to be a really good movie. This should have been a really good movie.This was not a really good movie.The idea was great. Five Cheerleaders hold up a bank. It could have made for an interesting counterpoint in today's world of teensploitation films (a genre, which I will admit to enjoying). However, it failed in its execution. I think the Nelson and McDougall (writer and director, respectively) were looking for a dark comedy with deep social implications, but instead we are left with a weakly plotted string of not so funny one-off jokes. All things considered, the acting is decent, especially on the parts of Marla Sokoloff and Mena Suvari (both of whom, I am looking forward to seeing in more and greater roles), and yes, if you care, the girls are all cute. But it ends there. If you're looking for substance, and better executed dark comedies with similar themes or styles, I would suggest "But I'm a Cheerleader" or "Drop Dead Gorgeous." If you are looking for a good cheerleading movie, then go see "Bring it On". If you are simply looking for cheesecake. Well, i'm sure you can do better in that department too.Not the worst movie of all time, and worth seeing once, just for the experience, but its very disappointing to think about how much better it could have been.

This movie is a joke

And I literally mean a joke. It's all about hilarious stereotyping andevenvague senses of "Oh, that person seems like someone I know." This movieshould not be taken seriously by any means. There is not one dramaticmoment in this entire movie and anyone actually spending time trying tofindone is wasting their time. This is a great movie, if you can realizethatit is very warped and very unrealistic.Also, the ladies in this aren't hard on the eye either. (wink,wink)

I liked this

Yes, the movie is a bit cheesy and not everyone liked it, but I will admit that I did. Cheerleaders going rogue and robbing, I thought it was funny and well-carried off. The cast of actors making up the ensemble of cheerleaders did a nice job, in my opinion. I can't really complain. The movie is far from perfect, but it sure isn't bad either, and I feel justified in giving it four out of five stars for an amusing movie.

A Good But Quite Short Crime/Comedy Teen Movie.

Sugar And Spice wasn't released at any cinemas over here in the UK. I haveno idea why. I mean, if bigger flop movies like Say It Isn't SoandJosie And The Pussycats (-Was only released in a couple of cinemas though.)were released here than why not Sugar And Spice. Anyway, it was out to buyon DVD over here on Monday, so I brought it straight away. (The DVD containsno extras, just the movie trailer.)Sugar And Spice a was comedy movie mixed with crime. It was NOTHING likecheerleading flick, Bring It On though. Yes, Sugar And Spice was aboutcheerleaders and there was the odd cheer at the high-school but that'sit.Now, Sugar And Spice, is about a group of high school cheerleaders, who areall the best of friends, and they would do anything for each-other. When oneof them becomes pregnant with the star quarterback's child, she findsherself in need of some desperate cash, so with the help of her friends,they coy up a plan, to rob a bank, so she can get the money she needs.The cast which includes the likes of, Marla Sokoloff, Marley Shelton, MenaSuvari and James Marsden are all quite good here.The movie itself was interesting, but it could of been a little better. And,at only 78 minutes long, the movie definitely could of been a bit longer.Sugar And Spice was still a good movie, and if you're into teen movies, thenI'm sure you'll enjoy this one. I give Sugar And Spice a 7/10.

Absolutely Horrible

I can't believe it that was the worst movie i have ever seen in my life. ilaughed a couple of times. Another sweet funny pointless movie I love...

Yes folks, another corny teen movie. Only this time it isn't the boy-meets-girl boy-falls-in-love-with-gril boy-and-girl-have-problems-but-in-the-end-all-is-good storyline. It's about five cheerleaders (and Fern later on!), who are different from each other but still close- so close they even get their periods at the same time. When the head cheerleader realizes she doesn't have enough money for her unborn children, they deciede to rob a bank to help her out. How can you not love this movie? The actresses are super talented too, and each carictor has a special flaw that has to make you smile. Mellisa George plays Cleo, who's obbessed with Conan O'Brien (Just thought I'd add that Conan is the man!). Mena Suvari plays Kansas, a rebel who's mom is giving them tips on how to commit the robbery. Rachel Blanchard plays Hannah, a good christian girl who had her first orgasm while riding a horse at band camp. Marla Sokoloff plays Lisa, the B-sqaud cheerleader who's out for the A-squad girls. Sara Marsh plays Lucy, the brian who has second thoughts. As Fern, Alexandra Holden is the newest cheerleader and daughter of an extermenator. And Diane rounds out the bunch as the oh-so-sweet head cheerleader, played by Marley Shelton. This movie is good for laughs and it doesn't stoop for low jokes like movies such as Scary Movie and American Pie. Next time you're at the video store, pick it up.

Gorgeous cheerleaders in a very funny movie

Mena Suvari in a cheerleading outfit. That's why I bought this movie. I'm not ashamed to admit that. This movie has more than just Mena in a cheerleading outfit, though--it has several other attractive young ladies in cheerleading outfits. Mena aside, this is just a fun and entertaining movie. There are some people who would call this movie lame and silly, but who cares about those overly serious people? All movies don't have to be dramatic passion plays that enrich and inform our lives. Sometimes, there is nothing better than a good, "dumb" high school movie, and this is one of the better ones. A group of "A Squad" cheerleaders end up robbing a bank in order to help support the unborn twins of the head cheerleader, who continues cheering into her seventh month of pregnancy. In the process, hilarity ensues. It's a funny movie, and that is all it is intended to be. It won't win a Best Picture Oscar, but it provides a welcome escape from reality. For obvious reasons, I'm sure this movie will appeal more to male viewers than to females. The girls in this movie are gorgeous, especially Mena (of course). In a way, this movie portrays young women asserting themselves, working together to accomplish their goals, so maybe there is some educational value in it. Or maybe not. It annoys me to see other people saying things about how this movie could be a bad influence on youngsters. So the main characters gets pregnant and ends up getting her friends to help her rob a bank. If there has been a rash of pregnant, teenaged cheerleaders dressing up as Betty dolls and robbing banks since this movie came out, it's news to me. This is comedy, folks. The cast is great, and one reason they are all great is because they all overplay their characters to maximize the levels of satire and comedy. It is an insult to today's youth (which I am slightly too old to still be included with, unfortunately) to claim that a film such as this is going to "influence" them to be immoral. Today's youth understand comedy and entertainment; they know you should not take everything in life too seriously. They also know that a movie does not have to "make a point," as one reviewer argues. This movie made me laugh, and I enjoyed it from start to finish. In my book, that makes it a great and successful movie.

Silly Funny Laugh-till-you-cry Movie!

I've seen this flick on TV a couple of times, never the whole thing so I never knew the title until I googled "cheerleaders rob bank". That tells you right there how crazy this movie is. Trying to describe why it's so good is impossible-- it's just plain SILLY but so much fun you want to watch it over and over. It's hilarious.

Three syllables : Breathtaking

When I first started watching this movie on Cinemax, apprehension would bean understatement. Three minutes later, I was hooked...no turning back.Quite possibly the most important 90 minutes of my life were spent watchingthis cinematic manifesto of some of the world's most controversial issues:teen pregnancy, the right to carry arms, and young marriage.I have to say I felt a more educated man after watching these people performthese....roles (although they felt more like my best friends and closestfamily members once this movie finished). It is no surprise that within daysafter I completed viewing of this motion picture, my friends and neighborscommented on my improved verbal and emotional skills. Please everyone, foryour own sake, find some way to have your eyes meet "Sugar &Spice".

Marley Shelton is poignant as Diane in this illiterate teen angst farce.The following cast is testy. The costumes are sophisticated. One of thefairmovies in the genre, Sugar & Spice spills hollow teen angsts. 6 out of10.

A lot of fun.

I think this film was terrific fun, poking fun at all kinds ofstereotypes and doing it while winking at the audience. The twolead kids are great, practically nudging us to get the joke but in agentle way, and the supporting cast is clearly having a ball. The'dubious morality' of the piece is not really an issue, since it's soclearly a fantasy. I'm interested in seeing what else this directorcan do!

Tons of laughs, teen actors with talent, and a smart script. You get more than you'd expect from "Sugar and Spice".

"Sugar and Spice" was overlooked by audiences because "Save the Last Dance"was still on its money making hot streak. This film is definitely worthchecking out for many reasons.The film takes place in Minnesota, and it centers on the girls of thecheerleading team. They are creepily close, even menstrating at the sametime. Diane (Marley Shelton) get pregnant by her jock boyfriend (JamesMarsden) who surprisingly sticks around and stays with her during thepregnancy. Both of their parents do not like this and disown them, causingthem to move in to an apartment. Money is short, but Diane has a plan,robbing a bank.The acting here is great, Mena Suvari shines as usual, Rachael Blanchard isvery good as the extremely religious one, Marla Sokoloff is a great comedicactress, and Marley Shelton can easily handle her leadrole.The movie has tons of laughs, I guess it just rubbed critics the wrong way,they bashed it. This movie is darkly funny, yet sweet. The girls sticktogether and are always there for each other, in other movies the girlsfriendship would fall apart and they would go their separate ways. Theending is rather abrupt, but it fits here because of the movie's fastpacing.This movie, while not perfect, will most likely remain one of the funniestmovies of 2001."Sugar and Spice" gets a *****9/10*****

Sugar and Spice/This movie is worse than head lice

**SPOILERS**I'll be honest with you. I saw the commercial which included ascene of allthe cheerleaders in their bras and panties. I figured that any movie withthis sort of scene couldn't be that bad. GUESS WHAT. IT WAS THAT BAD. MEN:don't fall into the trap I did. This is nothing more than another additionto the pantheon of horrible teen movies that were created after AmericanPie. The movie was a bunch of gratuitous fart/menstruation jokes. If thismovie was a first draft, I'd say it did show potential. Too bad it isn't.*spoiler* The Conan O'Brien subplot should've worked, but the audience thatthis movie was geared to goes right over their heads. Mena Suvari lookedmore impish than ever with her bright red lipstick and orange hair. Thewhole notion of teenage pregnancy and marriage was just . . . disturbing.Marley Shelton is a cheap Heather Gram imitator, and she looks very muchlike some sort of bug. Just another excuse to squeeze money out of the MTVteen market.*spoiler* The main characters are Jack and Diane . . . sound like a certain80s song?

Doesn't have the feistiness of Bring It On

I enjoyed this movie, although was disappointed, as Bring It On is one of my favourite feel good movies. This was disappointing in comparison to Bring It On. The actresses are fab in this however - look out for a black-haired Melissa George (was Angel in Home & Away, and was also in Friends), who's virtually unrecognisable! Also Alexandra Holden comes in half way through (was also in Friends, and Tru Calling), and Marla Sokoloff (ALSO in Friends), Marley Shelton & Mena Suvari do a good job, with what little they have to do in the film, with their two-dimensional roles. They dress up as Betty Dolls (which I've never seen in the UK), and each one plays a different Betty Doll. The Bettys are: Diane - "Mood Swing" Betty; Kansas - "White Trash" Betty; Cleo - "Stalker" Betty; Hannah - "Virgin" Betty (with optional horse and saddle); Fern - "Terminator" Betty and Lucy - Richard Nixon. (Obviously another nod to Point Break.)The storyline's pretty standard for a teen movie. Lead star (who looks like Heather Graham) gets pregnant, move into their own home, and promptly run out of money. So while watching Point Break (yes, you do get a glimpse of Keanu during this), they decide to rob a bank. And it goes off without a hitch.The movie's not that long, only 73 minutes, with two minutes of "where are they now?" and six minutes of credits for a running time of 81 minutes. So it's not completely a waste of time, as it's over in no time, and it's instantly forgettable as well.Fluffy fun, which you'll watch, smile and switch off. Nothing more, nothing less.

not as good as bring it on but not to bad

I love cheerleading movies. This movie was about the head cheerleader of thea squad who gets pregant. she is forced to move out of her parent's houseand gets an apartment with her boyfriend. she realizes that she don't haveenough money to be able to raise her son to be born child so her and hercheerleader buddies rob the bank where she works at. while robbing the bankthe leader of the b squad sees them and tells the cops that they were in hercar while the robbery was taken place in an exchange to be the new leader ofthe a squad. some humor, pretty girls, and cheerleaders makes it a10.

When I first saw Sugar and Spice i thought it was just another cheerleading movie. Boy was I wrong! I discovered this diamond in the ruff! I know that everyone else thinks this movie is horrible but it is and always will be my favorite.

Low Grade Teen Flick

A pretty low point in the teen movie genre is this ridiculous film about four high school cheerleaders who decide to rob a supermarket bank when one of the girls (Marley Shelton) gets pregnant and married and can't afford to live on husband James Marsden's video store salary. Their plans to pull off a successful robbery and getaway seem pretty smooth until cheerleader-wannabe Marla Sokoloff shows up and threatens to throw a wrench in the whole thing. Most of it is uninspired, and the messages about giving teens more opportunities to better run their lives is wasted in this films' irresponsible attitude. Oddly enough, Mena Suvari is for once left in the background, a real shame considering she's much more interesting in this film than I'm used to her being.

Nice little entertaining movie

This movie doesn't do much, but what it does, it does good. It just tells anamusing little story with no background except to entertain.I don't know why it gets such a bad rating, its just pretty harmless, butnot bad. Maybe those people don't like the modern, black humor in it ?! Orthey want movies to be serious ? Or they think having stupid characters in amovie makes the movie itself stupid ? Or they want it to be realistic ? Orwhat ?I believed through the whole movie that Marley Shelton is Heather Graham,they really look very much the same. I fact, I liked it far more than AustinPowers, because it has the right joke timing. I think its the best moviewith Mena Survari since American Beauty, far better, far funnier and farmore natural than American Pie.This is a funny little movie and I think its worth your time. Just don'ttake it serious, and enjoy its black unrealistic humor!

Light-hearted dark comedy: I don't think so

I had high expectations for this movie. I guess that they were a little toohigh, because this movie did not work. It started off great, being fastpaced, biting, and just plain mean. Any movie where the parents of both thehead cheerleader and the quarterback cheer about their marriage, but screamabout their pregnancy...well, it can still suck.The movie cared too much about its subjects. It had a heart for thecheerleaders (either that or it was the toning down after the shootings),and thus I didn't feel that the point of the movie was to laugh at them, butto laugh with them. This is like American Pie, where we laugh with thecharacters. Except the humor that could have worked was aimed at them, thusmaking a conflict and making many jokes not funny. Also, the timing was offon alot of the jokes. "You want to dust my a**" should have been funny, butit wasn't.So, if you like the light-hearted dark comedy genre (of which there aren'ttoo many...none that I can think of off the top of my head), see this movie,otherwise, stay to the biting satire of Bring it On.3/10
