A young girl (Baby Doll) is locked away in a mental asylum by her abusive stepfather where she will undergo a lobotomy in five days time. Faced with unimaginable odds, she retreats to a fantastical world in her imagination where she and four other female inmates at the asylum, plot to escape the facility. The lines between reality and fantasy blur as Baby Doll and her four companions, as well as a mysterious guide, fight to retrieve the five items they need that will allow them to break free from their captors before its too late...
I actually walked out of the movie theater. None of the previews showed anything about the REAL story of the movie. You think it's just an action packed girl power show. Well it's not, it's a perverted fantasy about sexual abuse, complete with the anime school girl outfit. It's inappropriate on so many levels that I can't believe this was PG-13, guess you can't trust a rating. Please don't let your kids of ANY age watch this! Totally disturbing.
Unfortunately, however, the film mainly shows that if you give a filmmaker the world, he often won't have the necessary skills to navigate it.
A lot of films aren't nice to strong women. The are independent to apoint, and in the end, need a man to save them. The film makers areeither misogynistic ("Oh yeah, you're tough, but in the end you stillneed a man"), or maybe they feel a lot of viewers don't want to seewomen do it for themselves. The women in Snyder's movies are different, they don't need men to come to the rescue in the end, but take out theguys themselves. Take Lena Headey's Gorgo who stabbed the a-holecouncilor in the gut, rather than need a guy come to save her.The women of Sucker Punch are the same, they fight, no men by theirside, and do it on their own. They are my ideal movie women, hot andtough. No damsel in distress garbage. There's no make out session witha boy friend, there's are some nice ass kickings, good special effects, dance practice routines, and the guys who imprison and exploit them gettheir comeuppances. The pay back comes at a huge cost however. The soundtrack is a ripper :-), and I'm never bored of playing it.Plus, there are two Aussies in the lead. Yeah :-) Emily Browning, andAbbie Cornish. Brwowning is the new comer, the strategist, andorganiser of the break out, while Browning is the reluctant, skeptical, but willing rebel who joins in the plot.Plus the story is easy to follow. Some flicks with mind warping storiesare good, but they're not the only type of entertainment. Noteverything has to be Shakepeare or Dostoevsky.I know this movie has received a lot of flack; mixed reviews, a smallprofit, and worst movie of 2011 in a recent poll. A few people I'vespoken to don't like it either. But I don't care. I'll like this movieeven if I'm the only person who does, and even if I lose an argument inpublic and I am ripped to shreds. The only down side was that John Hamm didn't get his butt kicked. Iwould be nice justice on Don Draper. That said, this goes with The Craft, and Ghost World as my equalfavourite movie of all time. Gorgeous iron women, no damsel in distresstrash, Aussies in the lead, special effects, easy to understand, and anepic soundtrack. 10/10
I've never written a review of a movie before, but I had to for this movie. I've never seen a movie with so many good qualities suck so bad. First, the positives. The creativity in this movie was absolutely amazing, better than any movie I've ever seen. Stories within a story within a story, the script mixes genres of history, sci/fi and fantasy to the point it even invents something new. The acting, I thought, was also top-notch. But then the F's started to factor in. All the stories within a story within a story were far too cumbersome. It wasn't confusing... it just eventually became overwhelming. Instead of finding myself entertained, I found myself growing frustrated that I had to expend so much effort to follow what was happening across all the realities. Besides this, the ending was absolutely out of sync with the rest of the movie. I don't want to give it away, but this is what killed the movie for me, and therefore I have to talk about it. The movie first takes the audience on a great allusion in an artistic ode to one's clan and one's own self-power. But then, it suddenly shifts in the end, minimizing these great things against a backdrop of tragedy and sacrifice. Herein lies the problem: everyday life is full of tragedy and sacrifice, but people don't go to a Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Action/CGI movie to see everyday life! So in the end, what made many see this movie in the first place is probably what killed it. I walked away feeling like I had totally wasted my money and my time. In the midst of all this creativity, I wanted to see these girls kick ass... not get wiped out at the end. The only hope it has now is a sequel that tries to fix what happened... make the deaths of the characters another allusion that was not real... I would definitely go to see that. But looks like the genius who wrote the script left no room. It will be hard to bring back the characters who must be either dead or catatonic by the end of this movie.
I have NEVER written a review before. I am only writing because I totally disagree with the critics. As a portrayal of a graphic novel, this movie is spot on and is completely faithful to the genre. As to plot, it's a graphic novel. The interplay is not witty dialogue but a interaction between images.Acting was very good. The right amount of "ham" for again a graphic novel character.I guess if the lead character was clearly from a victim class and the jailor was clearly a republican, the critics would have loved it.
Have just watched this film and have to say I don't really understandhow so many people can say this is a poor film. OK the script isn't thebest in the world but it certainly isn't a disaster. I actually thinkthat the ones who have rated this as low just don't understand the filmor won't accept it for what it is.I think Sucker Punch is a pretty cool idea with its layered stories,i.e. the reality and the fantasies within it. We only get to see thereality at the start and end of the film whilst the fantasies that areplayed out tell us what happens in between. It isn't that confusingreally and obviously given that this is all about what goes on in apersons imagination then there doesn't have to be any rules. That's whyin the deepest fantasy when the girls are attempting to acquire thefour items there are dragons and clockwork Nazis's in there. All in all it is what it is; a sci-fi, CGI, fantasy film with tons ofaction (maybe a tad repetitive), hot looking babes, a decent enoughstory and acting which won't win any Oscars but isn't that bad really.Oh and yes the music is quite loud!!
Thanks for nothing Zack Snyder.
¨ Who teaches us what's real, and how to laugh at lies? Who decides whywe live, and what we'll die to defend? Who trains us, and who holds thekey to set us free? It's you. You have all the weapons you need. Nowfight! ¨ Zach Snyder has adapted various graphic novels into films inthe past and I enjoyed his movies very much; I was a big fan of 300 andWatchmen and I thought those movies were terrific. In Sucker PunchSnyder tries something new; he wrote the story instead of adaptinganother novel, but still tried to give it the same feel and look hisother films had. The look of the film is also stylish, full of CGI, andthe graphics make us think we are playing a video game instead ofwatching a movie. This style worked for me in the past because Snyder'sstories were interesting. In Sucker Punch I just couldn't get into thestory, I didn't like any of the characters, and thought the plot wasjust ridiculous. The approach was also very hypocritical because themovie tries to preach about female empowerment and girl power, but theentire time the movie is targeted towards a male audience; we havegirls fighting in short skirts, and the male characters have littlescreen time. I can see how this movie might be enjoyed by a young maleaudience, but it just didn't work for me. Comparing it to 300 andWatchmen this movie doesn't even come close, but even before watchingSucker Punch I had lowered my expectations with the trailer. Iunderstood the metaphor and ideas the story was trying to get across, but it was just meaningless with these characters since they weren'teven developed at all. There was not one interesting character, theywere all one dimensional. The screenplay was adapted by Snyder himselfand Steve Shibuya, but the entire movie relies only on the CGI.Baby Doll (Emily Browning) is sent to a mental asylum by her stepfather(Gerard Plunkett) after her mother dies and she accidentally kills herlittle sister while trying to protect her from her abusive stepfather. She was aiming at him, but she missed and her little sister sufferedthe consequences. Baby Doll is institutionalized and in five days thedoctor will perform a lobotomy on her so that she forgets everythingher stepfather has done. Blue (Oscar Isaac) receives an importantamount of money from the stepdad to make sure the doctor signs the OKfor the lobotomy. Dr. Vera Gorski (Carla Gugino who also starred inWatchmen with Snyder) never signs the petition because Blue falsifiesthe signature and so everything is set for within five days when theDoctor (Jon Hamm) comes back. Baby Doll isn't alone in the asylum. Shebefriends four other female companions: Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish) andher sister, Rocket (Jena Malone), Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens), and Amber(Jamie Chung who was recently seen in The Hangover 2). Baby Dolldecides to create an alternate reality in order to avoid her pain andguilt. In this fantastical world she becomes a sort of warrior and withthe help of a Wise Man (Scott Glenn) she comes up with a plan to escapethe mental facility. Along with her four friends they go on a missionto retrieve the five elements they will need in order to escape. Inthis fantastical world they have to face ninja robots, Nazi zombie'sand different kind of monsters. The lines between fantasy and realitybegin to blur as they try to collect the items and break free from theasylum. The characters are so poorly developed that I really didn't carewhether or not they escaped the institution. Even the fantasy clips inwhich all the main action and cool effects take place felt more likemusic videos due to the loud music and video game style graphic. Themovie is empty; simply eye candy and I couldn't see anythingphilosophical or deep about it. I really was disappointed with thismovie, but I know Zach Snyder will bounce back. He should stick tographic novels. As for the performances there was nothing remarkableabout any of them, but the cast isn't to blame because the entire movierelied only on the special effects and not on trying to develop thecharacters. The effects are interesting at some times, but we've seenthem all before and there is nothing new to Sucker Punch. This willdefinitely be on my list of worst films of the year; it was a hugedisappointment for me. Everyone has the right to make a bad film; evenPixar came short with Cars 2 so I don't think Zach Snyder should beworrying about how things turned out in Sucker Punch. Some young malesmight want to check this movie out, but I wouldn't recommend it.http://estebueno10.blogspot.com/
This review is from: Sucker Punch (DVD) At least the ending was ok.The action scenes were great but here weren't enough of them as there's 3 distinct lines being carried through the movie....two pretty much kinda pooh. The fantasy action line was pretty dang good and the ending was nice.Overall, it was a disappointment. Once you see the previews, you've seen the best parts of the movie and that just isn't a good thing.
Got the privilege of watching the Indian premiere of Sucker Punchyesterday and my excitement was through the roof (afterall, this is theguy who gave us 300 and Watchmen). What made the screening even morespecial was it was on IMAX screen. Yesterday was the first time I haveever been to a film premiere and I will remember this for a long time.Zack has done justice to his reputation. You will find plenty of histrademark slow-mo fight scenes and close ups. I can't talk more aboutthe fights without revealing more, but I'm positive the first fightscene will take your breath away. What made the experience jaw droppingwas the "IMAX effect". Try and catch this film on IMAX if you can, andI'm sure it will have leave a different impression on your mind than aconventional theatre would. It features an ensemble female cast, EmilyBrowning(Babydoll), Jena Malone(Rocket) and Abbie Cornish(Swea Pea)played their part well whereas Vanessa Hudgens(Blondie) and JamieChung(Amber) were a distraction at times. But I wasn't impressed withOscar Isaac as Blue, maybe he tried too hard to be a memorable villain. The core of the film however is the other(fictional) world (this iswhere we see Zack's imagination in full flight). The visuals areamazing, set-pieces are jaw dropping and epic in every sense. In short,Sucker Punch is visually enthralling action fantasy that will blow youaway. Well done Zack!
[The] mash-up set pieces blend into so-awesome-they're-awful slo-mo monotony, and the awful sisterhood stuff in between makes you anticipate the action as though waiting for the bus.
I absolutely adore Zack Snyder. As far as I'm concerned, he is theGeorge Lucas of my generation. Sucker Punch was as visually pleasing aspromised, and the concept of the fantasy scenes was so incrediblyoriginal I have no other choice but to put mister Snyder at God status. However, I found myself wondering several times why I was the onlyperson in the theatre laughing...was the intention of certainscenes/characters/lines to be so ridiculous, or was it a complete miss. Some of the scenes had so much tension in the background with either anoverdone emotional reaction or totally un-buyable intimidation. I amaware that the story is meant to serve as social commentary, but itcame off a bit underwhelming. Included in that, is Emily Browning. Anamazing actress and believable as a kick-ass chick, I found myself seeher as the only one of the bunch that didn't look like she would at allbe a good dancer. That would be alright, had it been so that hercharacter is supposed to be this captivating siren of a burlesque girl.Men and women alike are completely enamored with her whenever she takesto the stage, but we never actually see her dance (with I understandfrom an artistic standpoint), and there is some awkwardness about herthat just doesn't make me think that she would actually be soimpressive. As for the effects, well, that and the soundtrack are the reasons thefilm rated a 6 on my scale. I am the first to admit that I am beginningto expect a lot from my directors these days and tend to nit-pick atthe little things. On the whole, the film was extremely enjoyable and Iwill own it. But I am left in worry over the monstrous use of effectsin all action films lately. Every fantasy scene in this film wasextravagant in an awesome way, but the robot scene left me thinkingthat just because you have all kinds of tools in a toolbox doesn't meanyou need all of them to hang a picture. I enjoy the use of moderneffects, but there is over-the-top, and there is overdone. I hopedirectors don't get too carried away and take away from theenjoyability because they've thrown EVERY trick at us in one 30 secondscene. Sometimes less is more.
This film is really two films in one. The first film (reality) is about young women in a gothic type mental institution being abused and trying to escape. The second film (based in Babydoll's imagination) comes in widely varied heavy doses of action as follows: - Samurai Fight Scene - Steam Punk WWI Fight Scene - Lord of the Rings Dragon Fight Scene - Futuristic iRobot Train Fight Scene The second film has all the traits of a Matrix action flick, but with mainly ladies instead of Neo and Morpheus. This film is loaded with action, with a thin veil for a storyline. The main idea is that you can set your mind free, even if your body is confined.
Sucker Punch, one of the most interesting movies that ever hit thesilver screen. The movie really captured the crowd's attention with itsit uniqueness of story, unbelievable effects and great directing.Though might not be called an "Oscar" movie, its twist and turnsdefinitely leaves you talking about it. Aside from its noteworthy plot, the movie also shows values of courage, independence, friendship,self-sacrifice and many more. It's imaginative director, ZackSnyder, and all the other people who worked behind the scenes reallytook their audience to another world. Of course, a movie is not a moviewithout the actors and actresses and, for me at least, they were verygood. Sucker Punch is the kind of movie you want to watch with yourfriends or siblings because it really exemplified being there for eachother and working as a team. To those people who said they did notunderstand the movie, I suggest watching it again and this time onlyfocus on the movie and I assure you will see its magnificence. Irecommend this movie to everyone.
For this review, I've watched the extended edition. Snyder's put toomuch emphasis on visuals and over the top action scenes... Although thestory is nice to begin with, after a while it seems the whole quest andfantasies are taking over. The first time it's kinda fresh andexciting, but it grows old real fast. Snyder has borrowed heavily fromother sources, such as Killzone. Actually, the whole movie plays like awatered-down video game. But just like the girls in teeny skirts, it'sall eye candy and very superficial. I had high hopes for this movie, especially being a fan of Snyder's previous work (300 and Watchmen). But unfortunately, this one falls short and gets the stamp mindlessaction flick.
I was entertained most of the movie, it was what I imagined it would be - great visuals, effects, action sequences, camera angles and sound effects. It was like an over the top music video slash, video game trailer. Charlie's Angels like cast, fantasy world of Lord of the Rings type settings, Matrix/300 type effects and fight scenes, with present day story taking place in a psychiatric ward for women, that doubles as an implied strip club/whore house. As my title states however, ending is disturbing, and feels irresponsible and excessive, in comparison to the rest of the movie. I have no problems with "dark" endings, but just didn't seem consistent with the rest of the movie, and wasn't necessary to go there (won't disclose the details). With that said, it bothered me to see kids at this movie. I think it was marketed to youth, but touches on a lot of subject matters that aren't suitable in my opinion. So from an entertainment standpoint, it gets a B+. From a moral standpoint, targeting kids/teens, I felt that was irresponsible.
Zach Snyder paints another masterpiece. Visually spectacular andpoetic, Director extraordinary, Great Style and Set (the same ofAvatar), Soundtrack Powerful, Good Cast (Emily Browing is very Good)and incredibly original plot. The first very long sequence is to beleft open-mouthed, to the movies a lot and we were ready to see amovie, Casino and full of rhythm (wich still are) just started ... butall in silence, he has kidnapped, has just silenced. And who often goesto the movies know what it's like this. IMHO the only flaw is that themovie is a little too short, so i Hope in a Directo's Cut in Blu-Ray.If you liked 300 or watchmen this is an absolutely MUST SEE!
Manages to be ugly, stupid, offensive, depressing, sexist and boring in equal measures.
After the death of her mother and sister Babydoll enters aninstitution, where she is to be lobotomised - prompted by herStepfather. However, she takes note of four items that are integral toattempt an escape with the fifth being the most important. An intrusive soundtrack, a lobotomy, dreamlike Cinderella/Alice-esquestory as we follow Babydoll's 'escape'-  Part Showgirls, Cabaret,Burlesque-like fantasy with Gothic sets, gloomy lighting worthy of TimBurton. Sucker Punch looks great with wonderful sets and sleek costumesbut lacks a compelling story, all is seemingly an excuse to show someaverage looking teen fighting girls, spectacular effects, breathtakingaction accompanied by a loud score and pumping tracks. There's words, guns, tight trousers, skirts and shoes and no acting required just anemotional and physical presence which is apparent. However, the strongominous opening setup leads to nothing more than an excuse to stringthe above together. Zack Snyder's fantasy-action looks similar at times to Kurt Wimmer'swork that also borrows from comic and gaming sources. Even thoughdirector Snyder has delivered such excellent work including the wellpresented Dawn of the Dead remake, visually exciting Watchmen and 300 -Punch just isn't that captivating requiring an acquired taste of styleover a simple story masked by a complex delivery. Sucker Punch requires a lot of patience's for such little reward. Whilesub-par D.O.A. was inferior and no where near as expertly crafted, itarguably was more more fun.
I'm sick and tired of wasting my time watching garbage because ofreviewers on IMDb have gone soft... Lately, meaning last two years or so, except for a few titles like"Shutter Island", "Inception", "The King's speech"etc., that have metthe expectations, because of some real great professionals wereinvolved, there was a ton of shitty films. I think... I HOPE! it'sbecause of the financial crisis that turns even artists into moneyhungry cons. This is one film that could've, should've revitalized the industry butfailed to do so because of greedy director, producer, etc... Dude, youdon't mix heavy drama, psychological tension, sexy teenagers, sci-fi,tons of cgi, and constant action, together in a big pot and hope thatbecause of the fact that you used all the best and most expensiveingredients you'll get a smashing result! It is Crap! better of with alow budget-good plot movie. It is too much, and instead of getting ourattention, it bored us, too much of everything for almost none strongbackbone plot... "Punisher 3" would have been far better, I would haveenjoyed it more, no matter how cheesy it would have been..."Sucker Punch", in my opinion is a big screw up. P.S.: Thought that baby doll girls with head drama would fantasizesomething that wouldn't involve heavy guns, monsters, swordplay, Nazis, dragons, orcs, mechanized samurai, robots, mechs, zombies, etc... I'malmost sure I missed something... That is only a boy's sweet dream. Ithink that both the producer, and director, woke up all wet and hardone day, and decided to put their wet dreams into a movie.I recommend this sort ofaction-fantasy-drama-psychological-horror-thriller flick, to twistedteenage horny boys who enjoyed "sailor moon" with napkins instead ofpopcorn...
