Unable to grasp the fact of his brothers death, Gordie Lachance feels compelled to travel with three friends to see a dead body that has been found near the railroad tracks.
"It was almost noon when we set out to find the dead body of RayBrower." So narrates one of four boys, all grown up and having become asuccessful writer like he always wanted, and now retelling the story ofthe summer adventure that changes the lives of him and his friendsforever.Based on a short story by Stephen King, Stand By Me is Rob Reiner'smasterpiece, vaulting him into the Great directors fame. This is a filmthat projects so much heart that it is impossible to forget over theyears. It is extremely well-sewn together, superbly crafting moodsmainly through the use of dialogue and sprinkled with nice doses ofhumour. To carry this dialogue is a perfectly dynamic and dimensionalcast of young characters: Corey Feldman, Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix andJerry O'Connell as the little fat kid (who is now an underwear modeland is dating a supermodel. We get it, OK? You're not the little fatkid anymore) that we follow through this epic "Lost Boys"-likeadventure.Stand By Me is an engrossing, gloriously entertaining and heartfeltadventure drama in which nothing feels missing or out-of-place andthat, more importantly, caters to people of all ages. 9/10
The outstanding element in "Stand by Me" is the abundantly talented youthfulcast. All roles are effectively executed, especially the quartet of kids on theirtrek along the backwoods of a small Oregon town. Rob Reiner's direction is likewise good, and even small parts are covered bywell known actors. A catchy theme song and sharp color photography add tothe film's impact. Like many odyssey stories, some liabilities are inherently built into theformat, namely, having to constantly invent obstacles along the way to keepdramatic tension alive. These here become somewhat predictable and eventedious, marring otherwise fine story telling. However, the youngsters, headed by River Phoenix and Cory Feldman, certainlyare more than adequate, and create an impressive portrait of small towncharacters. Obviously the film connected with audiences, which responded tothis adolescent yarn originally penned by novelist Stephen King.
As the screen lit, exposing a man sitting in a car on the countryside and a beautifully orchestrated take on B E King's classic hit, "Stand by Me", I knew I was in for something good. I really hadn't an idea of what the film might have instore for me, but it had left a good impression. As the movie rolled on, I found myself completely involved with the world of our protagonists, and caught up in every vowel spoken and every movement made. It's very rare that I find a movie so captivating, so entertaining, and so emotional. However, "Stand by Me" was one of the few films that I found very very few flaws with. The dialogue was easy to follow, the atmosphere was perfectly corresponding with the scenes, and the story was amazing. The film is about four twelve-year-old boys, like any other twelve-year-old boys in 1959, who engage on a journey they'll never forget. As the innocent, lighthearted "fat kid" Vern was looking for a lost jar of pennies under his porch, he overhears his older brother talking about a kid they found who died three days earlier. In search of stardom and becoming home-town heroes they leave home and follow the railroad tracks to where the body supposedly lies. Along the way, they face what's been eating away at each of them individually and have an emotional experience that is deeply profound to the characters. The boys face the end of their childhood by the end of the story, and come back to their town completely changed. This is one of the greatest movies I have ever seen.
Rob Reiner is incredible. This film is a must see because it showcases his abilities to direct under difficult circumstances. Working with a cast of teen and preteen can not be the easiest thing to do and all indications are that he pulled it off with ease through incredible casting of child actors.Wil Wheaton is very impressive as Gordie, a boy who is ignored by his parents because he is different and must be challenged by his best friend, Chris. Chris is played by River Phoenix and the acting job by River is unquestionably Oscar-worthy. Few child performances are nearly as perfectly done as River's (others that come to mind are Mac Culkin in Home Alone and Haley Joel Osment in The Sixth Sense), but I believe his stands above even those. Keifer Sutherland plays the antagonist very well... the only misses in the cast may be a couple of the minor players in the older gang. The younger gang of Gordie, Chris, Teddy, and Vern is well written due to their many differences and the writer/director's (Stephen King/Rob Reiner) willingness to display a full range of emotions in all of them. Richard Dreyfuss funtions well as the narrarator.Stand by Me is one of my two favorite movies of all time and is a definite must see.
Stand by Me is aspectacular movie, indeed. Of course, I was born in 1979 and I remembergoing to see this at the movie theatres when I was 7 with my dad which mymom wouldn't let me see a R film at all, but I still remember seeing it. Ienjoyed watching this movie through the years. It's excellent for teenagersand adults like me. It's actually funny too, Jerry O' Connell was hystericalas the little and nervous fat kid who tries to be very tough and strong. Theonly kid that brought the movie down was that Gordie kid. He should've notof been in the movie. He was weird and I didn't like him at all. But still avery good movie and I'm trying to buy it on DVD.8.5/10
If you have not yet seen this movie you must. I think anyone who goesthrough they're life, especially childhood, without seeing this movie isseriously missing out ona great plot, great quotes, and great acting.Theacting is so spectacular that i am inspired to try to become an actressmyself. After watching this movie, River Phoenix's death was so muchcloserto the bone, he could've been larger than life and to me, and i bet lotsofothers, he already was in his short time on the earth. Wil Wheaton wasthemost adorable thing in the world in this movie and having seen picture ofhim today, he hasn't lost that cuteness he had in '86. Corey Feldman, awesome, just great, i wish he would appear in more stuff today, "The LostBoys" and "Stand By Me" make you love him soo much, he just attaches toyou. The characters are so real even if you're a girl, an adult, or a boy withachildhood exactly like this. The characters are so real, so undescribablycool and soooooo well portrayed. The actors are even more lovable becausethey are close to their characters, Rob Reiner (director of Stand By Me)says you must cast them that way because they have not "developed thecraft[of acting]." So they really are like that!! It makes me so happy to knowthose guys are so real, very comforting in this new world ofmondo-commercialization.
stand by me is about 4 boys(river phoenix, wil wheaton, corey feldman andjerry o' connell)who go out and find a dead teenage body which has beenmissing for a while so they decide to go out and find it.i'd like tosay R.I.P to river phoenix who died when he was 23 on October 23rd1993.stand by me is a really good film and its about 4 teenagers who goon a trip for 2 days and it tells us about the liefs of the 4 boys andwhat they life like.it tells you what happens to them after they comeback from the trip and it tells you about the teenage body and whathappened to it after they found it. stand by me the song written forthe film stand by me written by B E king was a really good song and wonan award for it.
Like the boys in the film I was 12 going on 13 when I first saw this film.Instantly it became one of my all time favourite films and now having seenit almost a dozen times it still is my favourite.Four twelve year olds (Jerry O'Connell, Will Wheaton, Corey Feldman andRiver Phoenix) set out to find the dead body of another boy who is lyingdead by a set of railway lines in 60's Oregan. As they get closer tofindingthe body their emotions begin to spill out with the whole idea of gettingtothe body becoming an obsession.Wonderfully acted by the cast the film is directed superbly by RobReinerand when Ben E. King's classic song begins to play at the end you not onlywant the film not to end but generally feel moved.Stand By Me has something for everyone and is probably the finestexampleof River Phoenix's acting talent. The supporting performances from KieferSutherland, Richard Dreyfuss and John Cusack are all worth a mention but itis the four youngsters which really shine. Whether they are absolutelyperfectly cast or are all genius's is often debated by critics but onethingis for sure and that is Stand By Me is a masterpiece of 80's film. If Iwereto recommend one film to you this would be it. Better films may have beenmade but I have yet to see them.
An simple story that is delivered perfectly. The four boys acting isbrilliant, especially River Phoenix who was the star of the film. AllStephen Kings books are simple and are able to be read by anyone andthe films are the same, simple but magnificent. This is one of those feel good movies that you'll watch on an Sundayevening. Its tells the story of four boys searching for an dead bodywhich is located in an remote area. That all there is to it but thanksto the engaging characters and acting, the film is an joy to watch. Itall about the good times of childhood while at times it shows the hardtimes also.Overall it an great film. It to hard to pick an memorable scene, therenot many that you will remember and love but still, every scene is funand exciting to watch.
A wonderful, classic coming of age adventure-drama that will never get old, Stand By Me is truly a classic story of friendship that is unusual in being centered around pre-teen characters who are as enjoyable and engaging as any adults. Not to be missed. Yet another 80's classic where the young show the adults how it's done.
I saw this movie when i was younger and i still absolutley loveit.the story itself is just brillant. the actors fit with charatersgreat!whil wheaton did a fabulos job playing the dramatic kid. river phoniex fitthe bad boy with a soft heart image. corey feldman did an awesome job asthe"big mouth" type of kid. and jerry o'connell did a treffic as the fat ,notto smart but still funny kind of character! The movie let you see thatevena boy or man can still cry. It had a great message. Simply the 4 boys ,whorealy dont have much family, turn to the only people who can understandandhelp them in a time of need, their best friends. and its so sweet. Thismovie is and will always remain my favorite of ALL TIME! If you didntenjoythis movie the first time watch it again and it will be your favorite too!God Bless.
omg this movie is the best movie that i have ever seen in my entirelifethe performances were outstanding by wil, corey, jerry and riverespecialyriver river was the best actor of his time no sry the best actor of anytime this movie was magnificent and i hope that everyone will enjoy itasmuch as i did-if at first you dont succeed, cheat, repeat till caught, thenlie
I am 14 years old, and I absolutely love this movie. But don't let myage fool you. I'm not just going to sit here and talk about how hottRiver Pheonix was. This movie is well rounded in my perspective. Everyone can relate to atleast one of the boys in it at one time in their life. The actors arematched perfectly with who their character portrays.Corey Feldman'scharacter Teddy is the boy who's sensitive about his dad, but tries tohide it, Jerry O' Connell's character Vern is the chubby, wussy kid,but still part of the club, Wil Wheaton's character Gordie is thesweet, intelligent friend who tells stories to the other boys and isignored by his parents, and River Phoenix's character Chris is the boyin the neighborhood that's been labeled a bad kid and feels he'll neverget out of their town, the peacemaker, and Gordie's best friend. This movie just sucks you in as soon as you start watching it. It's notoverly mushy and sad, but it's not so tough that only a sixteen yearold boy could stand it. You feel for each character, no matter how meanor nice they are. My personal favorite is Chris Chambers, which i knowthis will probably drive you guys nuts that almost every other persondoes too, but River Phoenix is just so touching. The campfire scene isgreat, the milk money seen is great, and one of my favorites is thetrain scene. You can definitely see the terror in their faces. It'sfunny that they all act so tough, except maybe Vern, although he tries, and they still like talking about goofy and dancing and singing alongto Lollipop. You also just want to be there with them. Feel that kindof friendship that so many people long for. It's such a feel goodmovie, but not in the sense of a 10 year old's feel good movie. Itmakes you feel complete when you watch it. It's not jam packed withaction sequences or it doesn't have fluffy pink bunnies hopping aroundin it either. It's just one of a kind. Definitely worth my time andyours. The newest DVD of Stand By Me (Special Edition) has Walking the Tracks:The Summer of Stand By Me where all the main actors, except River, andRob Reiner are interviewed. They also talk about working with RiverPhoenix. There's also the Stand By Me music video with River Phoenix,Wil Wheaton, and obviously Ben E. King. Not to mention an extra CD withsome awesome oldie's songs like Everyday, Lollipop, Stand By Me, andMr. Lee.
Stand By Me has always been on my "To See" movie list. I never got around toit until recently. I was very surprised and utterly delighted at how good ofa job well done the production team had accomplished.Stephen King has always been a favorite of mine. I like his dramatic piecesmuch better than any of his horror stories. I was glad to see that his story"The Body" was made into a movie. He pumps out orignial stories that dazzle.Don't miss any of his work.In terms of direction, this movie couldn't have been done better. Rob Reinerhas a flair for directing. He works well with children, which helped in thiscase. Doing this movie was a challenge for Mr. Reiner (as said in hiscommentary). He took a fabulous story that was something dear to him and putit on the screen, and that takes intelligence. There is no doubt in my mindthat Rob Reiner had what it takes. As far as acting goes, I couldn't have asked for anything better. This beingJerry O'Connel's first film role, I would have to say he did superb. Thelate River Phoenix is a phenomenon of an actor and there is no doubt thatthis was a pinnacle of his acting career. Corey Feldman, as always, deliversan interesting yet entertaining interpretation of his character. Wil Wheatondoes an excellent job carrying the torch as the protagonist. KieferSutherland is not without his usual spark in his craft. An amazingperformance by all actors.Don't shrug this movie off. Go out and rent it or even buy it. The hour anda half you spend watching it is one you won't regret. Watch this with yourfriends, you would be surprised at how many refrences you can make in yourown experiences with this movie. Enjoy the show.
I read the book Different Seasons (i think that's what its called) byStephen King and The Body was one of the 4 short stories in it. When Irealized that Stand By Me was the movie version of this Stephen Kingmasterpiece I was astounded. Never before have I seen such a greatadaptionof one of Stephen Kings books. It's one of those great stories about boys on an adventure. This moviedisplays humor, drama, thrill, and a small dab of creepyness knowing thatwhat the boys are looking for is a dead body. The acting was brilliant. Rob Reiner did an excellent job of casting thecharacters. River Phoenix's portrayl of a mentally beaten child withdepthand incredible caused me to go into a year long obsession with him, learningof his life and death. Wil Wheaton was very sensetive throughout thewholething and if i didn't know better, i'd say he was naturally like that.Jerry O'connell is a lil goof ball that you have to laugh at throughoutthemovie and Corey Feldman is just crazy (but in a good way).Kiefer Sutherland's character, Ace, was so different from himself. He'ssosoftspoken and his character was a mean nasty bully, i thought it musthavebeen a diffucult task for him to pull off that character but he didit!I was a little dissapointed that John Cusack had a small part becausehe'sone of my favorite people ever (next to Jim Carrey and River Phoenix)andhe's an awesome actor.Stand By Me is a movie to last the ages. My dad watched it, my 22 yearoldsister used to watch it, and now, being 15, I've been watching itpractiallyevery day since I was 13. Although it displays a moderate amount ofvulgarity, it's all in fun and Stephen King did an excellent job ofportraying just how boys would act in that particular situation.I think I might just be a better person having watching this movie andexperiencing something so captivating. The only thing better than thismovie would be having River Phoenix alive today to watch his extremepotential blossom even more than when he left this earth. No matter, himand this movie will echo in time forever.
Four 12-year-old boys go searching for a dead body. When they find it, they have to fight off a group of older boys. Not much of a story, though I guess it's not meant to be, but rather a study of the four boys. One is smart, another is a take-charge type, the third is an odd-man out pudgy type, and the fourth is the victim of a psychotic father and not too bright. The problem is that one minute the kids sound like slob-mouthed 12 year olds and the next like adults in an O'Neill drama analyzing their "ruined" lives. Not very believable--or it tries too hard to be and fails, which is worse.
Although I watched it only few months ago, I liked it, I really do.Verygood story, talking about 4 truly friends and their adventures.I was very sorry when I found out that River (Chris) died, cause, evenhewas a drug addict, no young man deserves to die. At least if there was noway for him to find a way out of that hell, his friends should helped himtofight with it, with everything what they could do, and never to give up.Rest in peace my friend.
This movie gets better each time u watch it. It is a rare gem! The story of four young boys going a trip of their lifetime is so unforgettable. All of the boys realize something important in their life through the adventure. This is a great film about coming of age and friendship; it has great music, cinematography, and, most important, acting. River Phoenix is radiant in this picture; never has a young boy actor give such a memorable and moving performance. I have watched this film many times, and my eyes got wet every time the credit rolls and "Stand by Me" plays. Three cheers for this great film!
I first watched this film while i was in class, and was just shocked athowgood it is!I adore this film as i watch it nearly every week, and still enjoywatchingit! The characters are amazing and unbelievably excellent. the charactersremind me of when i was 12 and how much fun we had.The music to this film is really good and sticks in your head, just likethecharacters and their names do!!So if you havent watched this film, you have to but i bet you wont beable towatch it just once!
This movie is the best. I watched it like 5 months ago in Oregon and I didn't know the name. And I went back here and I kept wanting to look it up and I was watching the Goonies one day and I saw Corey Feldman and I looked him up and found the movie. I thought that the movie, Lost Boys was it but... UGHH I'm so happy!
