Splice

Elsa and Clive, two young rebellious scientists, defy legal and ethical boundaries and forge ahead with a dangerous experiment splicing together human and animal DNA to create a new organism. Named Dren, the creature rapidly develops from a deformed female infant into a beautiful but dangerous winged human-chimera, who forges a bond with both of her creators - only to have that bond turn deadly.

Science goes wrong...

A classic story, Splice follows two young scientists experimenting withgenetics, combining (splicing) the DNA of several animal species forexperiments that might lead to medical breakthroughs. One day, thecouple takes things to the next level when, against regulation, theyuse human DNA in the mix. With a mood resembling an old Cronenberg flick, Splice also borrowsmany elements seen in classic "monster" movies such as Frankenstein andeven Species. Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley, two solid actors, givegood performances here but Vincenzo Natali's direction rarely flattersthem. Likewise, the script has a relatively slow pace but characterdevelopment is somewhat abrupt. The film has a rather creepy atmosphere and well-realized creatures andasks interesting questions. But the main problem is the lack ofcredibility of the science and unbelievable characters. At nearly everyturn, our scientists are doing mistakes and their reactions are rarelylogical. Likewise, their motivations are often sketchy at best. The result of their latest experiment, a creature called Dren, isinteresting but often misused. Throughout the movie, several ethicalquestions are raised but it all feels very simplistic, like we haveseen this a thousand times. The raw angle on sexuality feels very "Cronenbergian" but itsintroduction is awkward and when it is fully realized, lacks in impactbecause you just don't care enough about the characters. All in all, I expected Natali to direct a much more character-drivenstory and was slightly disappointed he couldn't do more with such fineactors. The movie remains entertaining but could have been much morethan that.

Didn't quite gel for me

Splice looked good, sounded good, obviously spent some money onproduction quality. But still, bad writing cannot be disguised.Much of the dialogue was flat, unreal, and downright silly. Think:"Sure is quiet... yeah, too quiet." Twenty percent of the dialogue isTHAT bad.The ease with which these two characters perform their secretexperiments was silly. At one point Elsa jumps into the lab while Clivebangs on the locked door outside. Voila! Ten seconds later acomplicated scientific procedure is complete! That was easy. The main characters took turns playing good cop/bad cop so many times Icouldn't follow the story. First, Clive is the voice-of-reason, hetries to talk sense into Elsa. Then he goes crazy, taking the laws ofGod, nature, and the United States into his own hands; Elsa tries tostop him. Then back, then forth, then back again, and forth again.Neither of these two people could decide what their motivation was, what they wanted.I didn't care about anybody on the screen. I nearly walked out, butforced myself to stay, just to see what happens. The special effects were good. And the story was laced THICK with allthe current real-life arguments about DNA manipulation, human cloningand experimenting, etc. So the movie is closely tied to today's scienceand politics, and touches many sides of many arguments.I should've waited to rent it.

Interesting but poor ending

First i want to say this is NOT a horror movie. It's a scifi drama thattries fairly well also to be a thriller. Without getting really scaryin my opinion. But that's fine because it's not supposed to be. Or isit?It starts out really well. Brody and Polley are both great andeverything builds up nicely. The story is clever enough to inspirequestions about cloning, bioscience, patenting. But that quality fadessoon enough and sure enough there is a cheesy, boring ending. The movieswitches from being a scifi drama thriller to being just a thriller (orhorror?) but fails and simply destroys the good buildup. It manages so well to be a good and interesting drama the first hourand 25 mins that its hard to forgive the turn it takes near the end. There are many good things about this movie. The CGI is good andfollowing Dren from her birth and throughout the movie is interestingalthough also seems a bit distanced. Brody, as already said, isexcellent and probably what i will remember best from this movie. Allin all it's definitely worth a watch but also one that will be soonforgotten. Unfortunately.

I cannot believe I sat through the whole thing without walking out.

I saw this movie just tonight at the "Second Run" Cheap theater for$1.75. I was ROBBED. This is by far the worst movie I'v seen in years. At some point, I'm sure I've seen another movie this bad, but I can'tthink of any at the moment.OK, so let's get to the reasons this movie completely sucked.Obviously, this is supposed to be a Sci-Fi thriller, and Characterdevelopment isn't usually paramount, but The director gives us noreason whatsoever to care about the two main human characters. They'renot really good people, they're not really bad, they're just thereconducting the most ridiculous experiments which end up giving us the"Creature".OK, so the two main characters don't give us anything to care about. Nobig deal, this is a Thriller right? So we can expect some good oldfashioned, edge of your seat, scares right? Wrong. There's nothingremotely scary about this film, aside from the fact that the studiogreenlighted it.OK, so, We don't care about the characters... It's not scary.. Maybeit'll have some higher purpose, with great social commentary, and amessage of ethics that makes us think. NOPE.The whole premise of the movie is beyond stupid, but by the time Brodiehas sex with the Creature, it's completely impossible to take thismovie seriously.I usually have no problem suspending disbelief at the movies... Butc'mon, Throw us a bone here, you want me to believe that two young, successful, highly educated scientists working in a medical/geneticslaboratory, splice one of their own DNA samples with that of.... someother DNA coctail to create a humanoid creature in the broom closet inthe basement, of the Med Lab because... Why? who knows. Who Cares. It grows up into a female freakshow, that not even the lonliest guy Iknow would have sex with, but Brodie decides to do it anyway. Then theCreature changes it's gender, and Rapes the female doctor, knocking herup, and Killing Brodie in the process.Female doctor is pregnant with Freakshow's child, and the movie endswith GREAT possibilities for a FANTASTIC sequel. Somebody slap theDirector. If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I wouldn't have believed that inthis day, and age a movie this bad didn't go straight to DVD.I wasted 2 hours of my life, and $1.75 on this steaming heap of crap.Learn from my mistake, and don't let it happen to you. Stay home, andwatch Seinfeld Reruns, Change the oil in your car, Paint the Garage...anything... just don't waste your time on this movie.

Seriously Having A Hard Time Trying To Remember A More Unpleasant Cinematic Experience

On our way out of the theater, we were all trying to recall a moviethat might have been worse. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon? The firstHulk movie? Sex And The City? Bring It On - In It To Win It? Jaws 3 In3D? I would watch them all again before wasting any more time on thistrue pile of waste. Right now I am resisting the urge to suppress myviolated recollection of this movie so I can warn the viewingpublic...and I can honestly say you would be better off getting aticket for ANY OTHER random movie than this one. I do not make thatstatement lightly. I have been a Sarah Polley fan since "Go", an AdrienBrody fan since "The Pianist", AND a Vincenzo Natali fan since "Cube",but stock in all their future cinematic endeavors will now be calledinto question because this movie was SO distasteful. "Why?" you ask? There are so many reason, I really don't know where to begin. First ofall, I'm extremely disappointed because the movie touts itself as aSci-Fi thriller. There is very little science-fiction, and the moviewas hardly scary. All nine people seated in the movie theater (whichshould have been my first hint this movie sucked) winced more as amatter of the unpleasant sexual activities on the screen than anycinematic suspense. Seriously. Imagine Jurassic Park where thezoo-keepers have sex with the dinosaurs, and you have an idea of themajor plot elements of this movie. And that's just the beginning, but Ireally have to end my testimony there because the movie was just thatunpleasant. Save your money and go see anything...or see nothing.Either one is a better choice than wasting your time and money on thismovie.

Easily in the bottom 5 movies ever seen

Wife and I went to see this last night and were truly flabbergasted and left speechless about how horrible this flick was (and that doesn't happen often!). Made most of the 1950's-vintage 'sensational' movies (think: "The Beast from Planet X invades Earth"-type movies). Thin/non-existent story, shallow plot, dreadful acting. Just as we thought it couldn't possibly get any worse, IT DID!An epic embarrassment for the acting talent in the movie as well as Warner Bros. I'd like a refund of the 2 hours of our lives back please. Even moreso, I dont think this review still adequately expresses how bad it was... really...

D-

I finished off my hard notes with a resounding 'F', but I decided it should get at least a D minus for special effects and story potential. The low score primarily reflects the fact that, at least for me, Splice fell well short of the film it could have been, not to mention a number of issues I encountered with the plot and characters.Pacing. What can I say. This movie follows the worn-out trend of having the creature grow at hyper-accelerated rates so that the plot might progress in real time. I suppose it's widely accepted that to jump forward would be too awkward, so, it's just better to try and convince the audience that cellular activity at hyper speeds is completely plausible.Let's see what else was problematic or just straight up dumb... blobs spontaneously changing sex, the blob fight magically creating the force to pry large metal screws from the floor and tip the enclosure onto the audience, I don't see how anyone could not roll their eyes at that... um, the creature Dren magically evolving from requiring air to breath, to requiring water, then inexplicably to both?No precedent is ever made for it's sudden ability to grasp word association, or to be able to draw in crayon using a variety of line and shading techniques. Dren possesses fully-functional, bird-like wings with feathers, which magically vanish inside her like Wolverine's claws. It's absurd and, yes, I understand what they were trying to do; she's the product of DNA which has been combined from many different kinds of animals, and so she has wings from a bird, hooves from a deer, a tail from a kangaroo, which possesses a stinger like a scorpion. Her eyes are set wide like a moose, her tongue is long and tapered like a rat's, her arms are thin and boned like a dog's, and her nose is a recombinant of Michael Jackson. Yes, I understand all that, but it creates such logistical problems that I don't have time to delve into them with this review, not to mention all the problems with the bio-physiological characteristics and developments that we are expected to just accept.Let's talk about the whole Adam and Eve allegory. Deciding to use the oldest archetype in history was the worst idea ever. As a result, the characters are fairly shallow and difficult to like. It didn't take very long before I couldn't have cared less what happened to Elsa. Clive was a little more admirable, but not by much and not for long. So, Adam and Eve, What happens? You've got a forbidden tree of knowledge in the form of recombinant human DNA. It's off-limits. The woman disregards the rules and laws and goes after it. She drags her fiance, Clive, into it as well. The guy, rather than standing up to her and doing what he knows is right, allows himself to become a part of it. So now, the Authority is bearing down on them and they are at risk of being caught, so they hide themselves away, in that old barn. Things go south. She gets impregnated by her, let's consider Dren as her personal "Original Sin", and now her offspring will, quite literally, inherit it. This movie's women are dumb, selfish, and without any moral bearings at all, just like Eve. Conversely, the movie's men are equally dumb, in allowing things to happen, even encouraging it. And then Clive gets all weird in the head and we have a near-beastiality to top it off. Ultimately, the woman's actions get her boss, her fiance, and his brother killed. The final encounter with Dren is awful. Not only has Dren magically changed sex, just like the blob creatures, but she/he/it is degenerated into a flying creature that snatches up people, flitting about in the most unnatural and impossible way, as all CG creations seem to inevitably behave.Isn't this movie billed as being a scary thriller? Yet, there's almost nothing scary about it. Unnerving at times, disturbing even, but never scary and I wouldn't even call it all that thrilling. Any suspense in the film comes as the result of the unshared feelings between Clive and Elsa, not because of any real fear of the creature itself.Vincenzo Natalirequires us to suspend disbelief way too much for a premium, sci-fi thriller. If there's one major ingredient this movie is lacking in, it's plausibility. And, in my book, a lack of plausibility equals a lack of believability, equals a growing disenchantment with every scene.I really wanted this one to be worth keeping in my collection, but there's absolutely no doubt it's going back to the MTC tomorrow.

"Watch, If You Have an Appetite for Uniquely Strange Story"

"Splice" is a science fiction cum horror film concerning Clive (AdrienBrody) and Elsa (Sarah Polley), two young rebellious scientists who aretold by their employers to halt their groundbreaking work that has seenthem produce new creatures with medical benefits by splicing togethermultiple organisms' DNA. They decide to secretly continue their work, but this time splicing in human DNA. But, like every creations; it hasits good as well as bad aspects. And things turn unexpectedly withgrave consequences.Cast-wise, confused. Adrien Brody wasn't exactly suited for the role.He seems quite unnatural for the role of a geek scientist. Neither hisunkempt hair nor nerd body were convincing enough. On the other hand,Sarah Polley was a bigger disappointment. She was just plain straightirritating. Her acting, expressions, dialogue delivery was all absurd.Overall, the casting was not credible enough."Splice" strength lies in its strange or rather unusual storyline, amazingly stupid or unique creature design and it's ending, where a lothappens to give an entirely new significance to the movie. On the otherside, its absurd casting is a big letdown.Overall, "Splice" is a unique science fiction movie with a strange yetunparalleled plot. The degree of liking a person will evolve for thismovie is directly relative to how he/she digests the unusual plot.My Verdict: 7/10

A creepy, slick and initially provocative sci-fi thriller that eventually loses steam once its surprises, cleverness and imagination wane midway.

Painful to watch.

Some people have called this refreshing, so people have called itsurprising, some people have called it "the worst movie ever" (butsomeone always says that). No, this is not the worst movie ever, but I have a hard time calling itanything other than "Bad" or "disturbing" (and not in a good way). So,lets go in depth shall we? The acting is good, Adrien Brody does a goodjob in his role...and that's where I stop with compliments (and nocharacter was really developed all that well. They were namelesscaricatures of personalities. Brody "Scientist with apprehension" Elsa"woman scientist willing to do anything to succeed"). The story had waytoo many holes, that someone with any knowledge of science would bepained to watch. And also, we're supposed to believe that twoBiochemists would make the series of stupid decisions that they did, assuch, the scripting, and lines become unreasonable quickly. The scenesare basically set in two places, and that becomes boring. A lab, and ashed. The backdrop quickly fades and you are forced to listen to twopeople stumble in to their own mess, farther and farther. The music, was minimal, which was good, but also had you feeling like somethingwas going to jump out, and it never did. The tension was felt, but wasnever released. Pair all this, with an ending that is impossible, you get what I justsaw. A movie that was good for a laugh(most of the audience was) and amovie that is good to bury your face in your palms and wonder "whowould do this?"A warning as well, this movie has some potentially disturbing imagesand actions, so take that to heart before you see it...if you do.3/10 save your money, and your time.

An original idea with a predictable ending

¨Science's Newest Miracle ... Is A Mistake¨ I really wanted to likethis movie more than what I did because it began with such promise andthe concept was very interesting, but as the film developed it just gotpredictable and the ending could be seen coming miles away. I wasdisappointed at how this sci-fi film became so predictable after thefirst half. At first it seems to be a film paying tribute to ¨The Brideof Frankenstein¨ with a very similar premise, but more believable nowconsidering the modern scientific advancements in genetics to create aclone combining animal and human DNA. Even the main characters names,Colin and Elsa, were chosen to honor the actors who played Dr.Frankenstein (Colin Clive) and the bride (Elsa Lanchester). I wasn'ttoo happy about Splice and can't compare it to that classic because itjust doesn't resolve the way an original sci-fi film should. Spliceseemed to take all the modern day conventions of movies near the endand lose all its originality in the process. Director Vincenzo Natali, mostly known for his 1997 film Cube, has an interesting idea but can'tfind a decent way to resolve the movie. He wrote the screenplay alongwith Antoinette Terry Bryant and Doug Taylor and at first they focusedon the ethical dilemma of cloning this being, the psychologicalelements of parenthood and family, but later focused more on Colin andElsa then on their creation itself. I really hated the ending and themovie felt so long even though it only lasts an hour and forty minutes.I was disappointed with Splice.Clive Nicoli (Adrien Brody) works as a scientist in N.E.R.D., acorporation that specializes in genetic research, along with hispartner Elsa Kast (Sarah Polley). They work in a genetic lab where theysplice several animal genes in order to create a protein that can besold in the market. The experiment goes well so Clive and Elsa want tofurther their research, but the leaders at NERD want them to stick tothis experiment and sell the protein because they can't have any moreexpenses. Elsa ignores her bosses and along with Clive continue toexperiment on several animal genes. They add a human gene as well inorder to speed up the process and the result is a new living organismthat develops at an amazing rate. At first Clive wants to destroy thecreature, but Elsa protects it and convinces him to let it grow sinceit will die soon anyway because of the speed with which it develops. The creature takes the shape of a little girl mixed with some animalparts, and Elsa treats her as a kid more than an actual experiment andeven names her Dren (Nerd spelled backwards). As she grows, Elsa andClive have to take her to a barn where they keep her locked out fromthe world. Dren (Delphine Chaneac) has human needs, such as need foraffection, love and being cared for, but at the same time she has someviolent reactions and she gets harder to control. Clive and Elsa willsoon discover that it wasn't right for them to mess with mother nature. There are some interesting elements that Vicenzo plays along with here, such is the case with how life changes with parenting. First Dren findslove and nurturing from her mother, but as she grows older she becomesmore fond of her father, but the film decides to abandon thesepsychological and moral issues and tries to have a more Hollywoodfriendly ending. Don't go into Splice expecting a Horror film, becauseit doesn't have any scares, the central theme of the film is thissci-fi and psychological study. Delphine Chaneac does a decent jobplaying this creature, but the rest of the cast I wasn't too excitedabout. Adrien Brody is far from his Pianist days and Sarah Polley wasvery weak as well. Splice had tremendous potential, but it really lostmy interest and it is not a film I would want to watch ever again. Ican see how many critics enjoyed this film because it pays tribute tosome classic Lynch (Eraserhead), Polanski (Rosemary's Baby) andCronenberg (The Fly) films. The film actually focused more on Elsa, then on Dren and I think we all wished it developed Dren's character alittle more instead of Elsa. Anyways this is a film I won't berecommending or ever watching again for that matter despite the decentreviews it has been given from the critics.http://estebueno10.blogspot.com/

Completely wrong aka the worst movie ever made

Splice might just be the worst movie ever made, and certainly the worsthorror movie ever made. I have to admit, it's been a while since I'veseen such a bad movie: terribly acted, ill-written and completelypredictable. Towards the end, you realize it's the cinematographicequivalent of a painful, never-ending diarrhea: it hurts, it's lastingforever, and you want it to end, but it doesn't, and it's constantlygiving you new plots and confusing you further more. The main idea isinteresting enough, and casting Polley and Brody makes perfect sense,as they're terrific actors; that's pretty much everything enjoyableabout the picture. The plot is as poorly-written as it can be, it's notfunny and definitely not scary... I found it extraordinary thatsomebody actually made the movie. I would completely rather go seeevery Jennifer Lopez movie ever made than to see Splice again...so ifyou're debating on whether to go or not - save yourself the two hours, because you won't get it back.

One of those movies that goes beyond the normal

Okay, so I saw these previews thinking "hmmm, another scary movie. It'll be just like all the others. I don't know why we don't just go toThe Killers or something funny, but whatever I'll give it a try." Well, much to my surprise, it wasn't anything like I thought it was going tobe at all, but I'm not sure I completely liked it. It starts off quiteboring for the first while. Two scientists create a new life form fromspliced DNA of different animals and then after that comes outsuccessful they decide to push the envelope and splice human DNA intoit. This creates this odd looking human creature that you expect tojust murder everything it sees. Wrong. It is nothing like you expect itto be. By the end of the movie I think it kills like two people and acouple animals. Not the gory movie you expect. Anyway it goes on tolive as basically their child and in the end basically gets killedbecause they didn't know how to control it, go figure. Humans neverknow what they're getting into, we just do it. But, this movie is goodfor the simple fact that it's not like every other movie and it givesyou something new for once. There is a lot of crude sexual humor inthis movie and it kind of almost revolves around that in a way. (Idon't know if it was intended by the director or not) But overall, aunique movie.

worst movie ever

I was horrified for a week after seeing this movie. Who ever thought of this movie has a sick sick mind! it was one of the most disturbing movies i have ever seen. Me and my boyfriend couldn't believe really had witnessed such a sight! don't waste your money or your precious eyes and imagination!

good movie, but twisted

Good movie, but very sick and twisted. It had the entire theater just dumbfounded. Its a pretty nasty movie, kept my attention though.

Had Great Potential, As Well As Many Missing Pieces

I was very excited to see this film when I first saw the trailers forit. It looked like there would finally be a monster movie that couldactually scare and keep its viewers on the edge of their seats.Unfortunately, it did not live up to expectations. Adrien Brody andSarah Polley worked well together, though their characters are veryfrustrating. They portray brilliant scientists, yet they make so manystupid mistakes. Though I found this to be a good depiction of howeveryone can make mistakes, it gets to a point where you're leftscratching your head wondering if these two geniuses ever went toschool. They continue to make mistakes but do not learn from them. Thishappens so often that it eventually becomes repetitive and old. Muchlike a modern day 'Frankenstein', there is one major difference; theydo not learn from their mistakes and attempt to fix them. Furthermore, the plot itself was very bland. There are a few scenes that weredisturbing, which largely has to do with Delphine Chaneac's goodacting. There is on semi-twist towards the end of the film that waskind of refreshing, but it does not save the film from its boring plot. Also, there are two sex scenes that involve Dren (the Creature), thatportray the psychological theories known as: The Electra Complex andThe Oedipus Complex. Overall, the film just does not live up to itspotential. The special effects were very well done and Adrien Brody wasthe brightest part of the film, but even his brilliant acting wasn'tenough to save this film.

Comic book-style sci-fi, unlikable characters.

With antagonists and protagonists swapping roles like they were at akey party, the film is missing something vital: likable characters. Thefilm tries to venture into moral ambiguity, but spends most of its timemuddled in patently bad decisions that get swept under the rug as"Well, it happened, so we may as well go with it". The ethicalcharacter in any given scene is quite likely to abandon theirconviction in the next scene, although we never really understand why.Splice is an ironically appropriate title for a movie that comes off asan awkward splicing together of drama, parody, comedy, socialcommentary, and good old-fashioned "monster in the foggy woods atnight" horror. Unfortunately, none of these seemed to mesh particularlywell. Many of the elements (major and minor) are predictable. There arecertainly a few out-of-left-field curve balls, but again theseultimately don't mean anything for the main story arc and are onlyvaluable on their own merit. While not overly preachy, the commentaries this film makes on topicssuch as abortion, stem cell research, parenting, and evil companies arevery obviously contrived and delivered. Finally, the science element of the film is far too glossed over, ending up neither mysterious nor intriguing, settling instead for justsilly. Despite adequate acting, neither of the main scientistcharacters are believable as professional scientists, leading one towonder how they succeeded in their career prior to the start of thestory. If this were set in an underground bunker at the north pole, andmade use of nicknames like "Dr. Sinister", it might have fared betteras a comic book film.

What the Hell Did I Just Watch????

I think the people behind "Splice" were going for a tragic-Frankenstein-like tale, but missed the mark horribly. Going into the film, I had some expectation (not a lot...but some) that it would be a fun creature-feature type flick. I mean it had an Academy Award winner as its star, it had to be somewhat better than a SyFy Channel original movie...right? Wrong!"Splice" tells the story of two genetic scientists (Adrian Brody & Sarah Polley)who've created a new life form by combining certain elements from a bunch of animals. These two "animals" which look like leather bags filled with bad cheese are producing an protien that helps fight diseases in animals. The scientists want to take the next step of adding human DNA into the mix. They are told no, and of course do it anyway. Soon a little hamster-chicken thing is running around the lab eating Tic Tac's. For some reason the hamster-chicken grows super-fast and the scientist begin raising it like a little girl, and before you know it blamm-o she's a young woman...with a poison filled stinger at the tip of her tail. There were just so many mis-steps in "Splice" it's difficult to just pinpoint where the movie veers off-course, but my guess would be when you first meet the two scientists in the opening scenes with their meat-sack creations, and by the time you see the little chicken-hamster thing, you can't help but start chuckling. What kind of scientists are these guys, the certainly aren't very good evil scientists, and they are not likable, and to top it off the they drive around in a 1970's era AMC Gremlin! Just poor judgement all aound. Also, on a side note. If you are making a horror film, at least try to make it somewhat scary. There is no tension, no suspense and no horror in "Splice"...well except for Adrian Brody's love-makin' face which we get to see twice unfortunately. Just a horrible film, that at times is laughable, but not in a good way. I recommend "Sharktopus" or "Dinocroc" instead. Sure they're bad, but they at least accomplish what they set out to do.
