Species

In 1974, an organization known as the Search of ExtraTerrestrial Instituion (SETI) has possessed some kind of alien being, thus beginning some kind of top secret experiment to mix human and alien DNA. This is when the scientists created Sil, a female human-alien hybrid. However, approximately 20 years later, she has escaped. Sil is also determined to reproduce, but needs human male sperm to do so. Now, a team of scientists and federal agents must find Sil and stop her from mating with a human male and reproduce.

Introducing Natasha

As a young girl, Sil (Michelle Williams, who of course would get nudeherself in the horror chick flicks, "If These Walls Could Talk 2" and"Me Without you"), a human/alien hybrid, escapes her governmentcaptivity. In a matter of days, she turns into Natasha Henstridge whoyearns to mate. Micheal Madsen is among the crew assembled to find andkill her. Both Forest Whitaker and Ben "Gandhi" Kingsley are prettymuch wasted, but Madsen does alright and Natasha getting nude copiousamount of times make this a fun, if brain dead little sci-fi flick.Nothing ground-breaking here, just enjoyable b-movie popcorn fare.My Grade: B- DVD Extras: Commentary by Director Roger Donaldson, Micheal Madsen, andNatasha Henstridge; Second commentary by Donaldson, Frank Mancuso Jr,Richard Edlund, and Steve Johnson; Sneak peek at Species 3; TheatricalTrailer; red-band trailer for "the Howling"; trailer for "JeepersCreepers 2"; one for "Earthsea" (a scifi channel mini-series); and afew montage trailers Eye Candy: Marg Helgenberger gets topless; Natasha Henstridge shows itall.

Henstridge should be shown this clear

Species is a above average movie. It's value is upped by three things. First Gigers art work on this all, second Michael Madsen as a 'assasin', and a alien looking Natasha Henstridge. Forget about Species 2 !

A decent Sci FI Horror Erotica esc film.

Species is the first in a trilogy of mankind being stupid and creating a alien human hybrid who's soul purpose is to mate. In this chapter some scientist come across this mysterious DNA which belongs to an Alien. They don't have a full strand so they decide to mix it with Human DNA creating this new creature. However once it gets loose all hell breaks loose as it's soul purpose is to reproduce, meaning lots of sex and or nudity. Overall this is a decent film, nothing spectacular but if your too embarressed to watch the real stuff than this can make for an entertaining time.

Bad movie

This movie use to be scary but that was when i was little, now this movie just seems not cool because of the special effect that today's movie have.

Michael DeZubiria 2012-05-19 13:15:20

Wow, Natasha Henstridge was literally born naked into the movies.

Species starts out with a great premise. Scientists receive radiosignals from outer space that, when decoded, include an alien form ofDNA and instructions for combining it with human DNA, resulting inattractive human creatures that have attributes of the alien species. In the opening scene of the movie, scientists are trying to gas a cutelittle blonde girl to death, having learned that this particular alienspecies is far more than we can handle and, my god, making it femaledidn't make it more docile and controllable after all. I find thebeginning premise fascinating to no end, but probably because I alwaysforget that such story lines are dreamed up by people who have no moreclue about what's out there than I do, so I'm probably not going tolearn anything. That's why movies like this tend to go downhill in thesecond half. One of the most startling characteristics of this new species is itsrapid growth rate. The subject has grown to the size and appearance ofa 10-year-old girl after only a few days, and then before long into thestatuesque form of Natasha Henstridge not long after. At this point, still well within the confines of the first act, it may become apparentthat, if she has grown to maturity almost immediately, you might thinkshe would grow into an old woman and die of old age before the week isout. Later in the movie you may also wonder how a few cells can growinto a bubbling mass of organic matter before the very eyes of shockedand frightened scientists with no nourishment whatsoever. What is beingmetabolized to allow it to grow like that?No matter. It's strange that the movie started off with such aninteresting premise, a radio signal from a clearly intelligent alienspecies, and then all of a sudden we realize that that intelligentspecies is nothing but another slimy Hollywood alien. Try to imaginethis alien, in its own form, sitting down to compose a radio signalincluding instructions for how to combine two types of DNA, and youhave the chink in this movie's already thin armor. Forest Whitaker is great as the movie's resident psychic, I don't knowwhy, he just fits roles like that really well. He's got one of thosefaces that always seems to be deep in thought, and is clearly notsomeone who easily fits in with the mainstream. He's very good atconveying emotion, from extreme sadness to gleeful happiness, andinterestingly one of his best scenes is one in which he's drunk. AlfredMolina is also very good as the anthropologist, a very different rolefrom the one he may now be better known for in Spiderman 2. There is a young actor named Michelle Williams who gives a wonderfulperformance as Sil, the human form of the alien, as a young girl, effectively portraying her fear of her sterile surroundings. Once sheturns into the blonde bombshell that is Natasha Henstridge, themajority of the rest of the film is concerned with her burning desireto mate and create babies and with everyone else's growing desire tostop her before they lose containment even more completely. One thing that I found interesting about the movie was the locations. It was filmed mostly on location in Hollywood and the Santa Monicaarea, which is where I live, so it was interesting to see all of thesestreet locations that I know so well. I found it a bit odd, though, that in one scene Michael Madsen's character reads Dr. Baker's (hisromantic interest in the film) home address, which is a real address inSimi Valley. My grandparents live in Simi Valley, and over theThanksgiving holiday this year I decided to ride my bike by the housethat was mentioned in the movie. It's just some house, in case you werewondering, but the address is real. There are some strange scenes in the movie, such as the one where theyfind the crashed car that Sil was in, find the tip of one of her thumbsin the car, and assume that she's dead. What do they figure happened tothe rest of her body? Vaporized? There is some great poetic justice, you might say, in her choice of a mate, but my favorite part of themovie was the part at the end when the woman wonders which half of Sil,the human or the alien, was the predatory half. Pretty interestingquestion about humanity, although a bit jarring to have come from whatis at best a second rate science fiction film.

Has a worse sci-fi movie EVER been made?

Ben Kingsley, you really must have needed the money. Natasha Hentsridge was cast solely for that gorgeous body of hers; the producers knew that they had a ridiculously bad film on their hands and had to give the target audience some reason not to complain. But complain I will, because I want something resembling a real plot in my sci-fi; I want stimulation for more than just my groin; I want my sense of plausibility to be stretched, not tossed aside. This film is a mish-mash of retread effects, no thrills whatsoever and way too many, "Oh, we just missed her again by seconds, so let's chase her some more!" Wretched, simply wretched. Species, since it's release, has been the movie by which I judge all others - for awfulness. Whenever I see a truly terrible sci-fi movie, the first thought that comes to mind is, "Well, it was better than Species."

Kind of fun

Some scientists working for the government tamper with a DNA sequencethey got from a message from outer space. The subject turns into alittle girl with amazing superhuman powers. She escapes and turns intoa beautiful woman (Natasha Herstridge) who wants to mate and produceothers like her. A team led by a head scientist (Ben Kingsley!) try totrack her down.OK--it's kind of silly but this moves quickly and is well-done. Thereare many excellent, if gruesome, special effects and the SIL creatureat the end is truly astounding. The script is good (considering) and itactually makes sense...if you don't think about it too much.Acting varies--Kingsley is TERRIBLE in his role. Michael Madsen ispretty good as part of the team as are Marg Helgenberger and(especially) Forest Whitaker. Herstridge is certainly beautiful butcan't act--but the role doesn't call for acting.I'm giving it an 8. It's no classic but it moves quickly and I wasnever bored.

excellent sci fi with some gore.

I would ignore the one star reviews on this one. This was not a B movie at the time it was released, in fact it was a A movie that did quite well and provided some good chills. It does have a few scenes that are gory and upset some of the non horror fans out there. Those type of people don't like to mix horror and sci fi , too bad for them. The blu ray print is clearer than the dvd's for certain. this wasn't shot on the best film stock like todays films so you can't expect to look like todays movies on blu ray. One reviewer who is oblivious to film stock didn't know this. I would say that they should have put species two on here too. In fact if they do release species two on blu, I would hope the others on are on it too. This was a great intro flick for the talented lead actress here as well. So if you are a horror and sci fi fan this one should wet your appetite, however this isn't for younger kids in the least. There is nudity and some real gory violence in this movie so it's not wise to put your preteens in front of this one.

S for Sil

At S.E.T.I. ( the Search for Extra Terrestrial Life ), a team ofscientists, headed by Fitch ( Ben Kingsley ) have picked up strangesignals from outer space that appear to be a genetic code. The code isthen used to create a human being - a young girl whom they christen'Sil' ( Michelle Williams ). She is too powerful for them to control, and they try to kill her. Sil breaks out and, evolving into adult form( Natasha Henstridge ), steals a train conductor's clothes and money. While they endeavor to track her down, the alien girl embarks on ablood-soaked quest for a mate...In 1960, the B.B.C. broadcast 'A For Andromeda', a six-part sci-fiserial by Fred Hoyle and John Eliot, which starred the then-unknownJulie Christie. It also concerned a beautiful young woman created byscientists from information sent from space. 'Species' owes it a greatdebt, as well as to the 1990's revival of 'The Outer Limits' and 'V'especially the character of Elisabeth the star child. Nudity abounds, but with Henstridge providing it who's complaining? The 'yuck' factoris high too, especially in the scene when the chrysalis in the traincompartment spits out the adult Sil. 'Alien' creator H.R.Giger designedSil's true alien form and, as you'd expect, its gross.Yes, this is a daft movie - sleazy and illogical by turns - butthoroughly enjoyable. Quality actors such as Kingsley and Alfred Molinagive it a bit of a lift. Roger Donaldson, the director, was alsoresponsible for the Pierce Brosnan disaster flick 'Dante's Peak'.Three sequels followed, of which I've only seen the second ( it wasdirected by Peter Medak and was simply appalling ).

she's a predator . . . her eyes are in front

A science fiction based adventure with a fresh premise, Species (1995) is still probably most remembered for Natasha Henstridge's provocative performance in her feature film debut. With a background in fashion and modeling, the shapely twenty one year old was very comfortable with her body, and had few inhibitions about nudity. These factors would prove to be quite helpful, in the role of a sexy looking alien, seeking to reproduce. In addition to Henstridge, the film directed by Roger Donaldson (Thirteen Days), features a stellar cast that includes Ben Kingsley (Ghandi), Michael Madsen (Kill Bill), Marg Helgenberger (CSI), Forest Whittaker (The Last King of Scotland), Alfred Molina (Spider-Man 2), and Michelle Williams (Dawson's Creek). As part of the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) program, the US Government receives information from an alien race about how to create a new form of life. A research team headed by Xavier Finch (Kingsley) successfully produces a female alien named Sil, who escapes from a lab in Utah, when an attempt is made to terminate her life. Looking like a teenager, young Sil (Michelle Williams) escapes aboard a freight train, and then switches to a passenger train bound for Los Angeles. Aboard the train, Sil transforms into an adult (Henstridge), and hits LA eager to find a mate. The Government organizes a team to hunt down the alien. Biologist Laura Baker (Helgenberger), anthropologist Stephen Arden (Molina), expediter Preston Lennox (Madsen), and empath Dan Smithson (Whitaker), are recruited to join the team led by Fitch. Tracking Sil, the team finds a bloody trail of those she has rejected as mates. As the group closes in, Smithson emerges as one of the keys to being able to locate Sil. The alien is quickly learning skills that help her to survive, and she does eventually find a mate, before escaping into the sewer system to give birth. Although the film features special effects at key points, there isn't an overreliance on CGI. The affects are generally done pretty well, and Species does not appear too dated. Sil doesn't have a lot of dialog, and the character is heavily defined by her actions, as well as Natasha Henstridge's physical attributes. Her naked body is amply exposed at various times, but the nudity is tasteful, and appropriate to the story, which is constructed better than your average monster flick. Henstridge's performance has an uninhibited innocence, and makes for an impressive debut. Madsen, Helgenberger, and Whitaker also assume lead roles, and help to bring the film to an exciting climax. Recorded some ten years after completion, a commentary track featuring director Donaldson, and stars Madsen and Henstridge, is informative, lively, and entertaining. Everyone is on good terms, and seems to be in a candid mood. Henstridge seems to have no regrets about making the film, and recalls how she was robbed while out on a date with one of the cast. The success of Species has inspired as least three sequels, with Henstridge starring in Species II (1998), and making a cameo in Species III (2004). The franchise may have finally run its course with Species: The Awakening (2007). Well written, with sharp dialog, the original film is far and away regarded by most, as the best of the series, and strongly recommended to fans of science fiction and action movies.

This is one excellent movie!

If you have not seen this movie, you are missing out! BUY it, RENT it, or BORROW it from a friend - whatever you can do - GET SPECIES! Action packed, with suspense and excellent acting from all of the main cast members, Species is THE ultimate alien movie - as good as the original Alien but this one has Natasha Henstridge - who puts Sigourney to shame in the looks department. Sure, she almost never speaks throughout the movie, but her performance - the reactions of an alien to the unknown world around her are awesome. If you like Hellraiser,If you like Alien (any of the series),GET THIS MOVIE!This one is in my TOP FIVE list of all time.

"I Think She Wants To Mate."

An exciting combination of pursuit thriller, science fiction, eroticadventures, and a mind-numbing piece of utter garbage.A genetic scientist working for the government gets hold of some alienDNA, combines it with human DNA, and produces a cute young blond girlwho seems to be growing with lightning speed. The girl escapes andturns into Natasha Henstridge who wanders around Los Angeles lookingfor a mate. She wants to get pregnant because the alien part of her hasbeen sent here to propagate and destroy the humans. The human part ofher is already beginning to hear the ticking of her biological clock. All kinds of killings, near-copulations, and titillations follow.Let me get the members of the A team right. Ben Kingsley is thescientist responsible for the creation of Henstridge. Marg Helgenbergeris maybe a clinical psychologist. Michael Madsen is the professionalassassin for some government agency. Forest Whitaker is the "empathic"who is able to read emotional vibrations. Afred Molina is the goofylooking professor of anthropology from Harvard.I didn't care for Molina's character at all. I was a professor ofanthropology for years and nobody ever "paid for my drinks" whilepursuing anybody like Natasha Henstridge. Of course I wasn't aprofessor at HARVARD, just a state university, but still. On top of hisbeing pampered by the government and everybody else, he's the one whogets to impregnate Henstridge. I was glad when she tore him apart.Of the other team members, I wondered what a fine actor like BenKingsley is doing in this slapdash lunge for the buck. Ditto ForestWhitaker and Marg Helgenberger, both of whom have more to offer thanwhat they're allowed to put on display here. Michael Madsen, I washappy to see, has the role of cynical hero, a change from his usualcharacter whose sadistic traits, if they had a face, would resemblethat of a Turkish pederast.I kind of enjoyed Natasha Henstridge, especially when she was naked, which is roughly half the time. Wow. She's a lissome, toothsome blondand very tall. When my mind wandered, as it tended to when she wasclothed, I found myself wondering if, put together, she, MarielHemingway, and Uma Thurman might not provide the foundation for adecent girl's basketball team. What made the fantasy attractive wasthat they were playing the game dressed only in bikinis and high heels. Not that Henstridge is without problems, both as actress and character. Her role as alien who learns mostly from observing others, limits herspeech to only a few lines. It's just as well, considering the way shedelivers them. But her weakness as a thespian is more than made up forby her magnificent figure. We don't get to see enough of it, if you askme. That's Henstridge the actress. The alien character has a different setof problems. First, she has a nasty temper. When her first victim iseager to impregnate her but she senses he has some heritable medicalproblem, she thrusts her tongue so far into his mouth that it comes outthe back of his head. Now, that's overdoing it.She's in the Jacuzzi with prospect number two, both naked and about todo it, when the phone rings. He wants to interrupt the proceedings andanswer it but she's anxious to get going. When he insists, she turnsinto her alien form and disarticulates him. The scene caused ahorrifying flashback to my marriage.A few words about her alien form, which we get to see in its mostrevolting aspect at the climax. In the Jacuzzi, it assumes the kind ofdemonic form that is Judeo-Christian in nature. She looks like ourusual conception of Satan, with vertical pupils and pointed ears. Theorigin of that figure is not from outer space, it's from the MiddleEast of thousands of years ago. I make this observation as yourpersonal anthropologist. That will be fifteen cents. Or a billet douxfrom someone who looks just like Henstridge in her human form. But -- just listen to this special offer! For fifteen cents I willthrow in the observation that in her FINAL form, in the sewer beneaththe hotel, she shows distinctly mammalian characteristics -- herbreasts, her hair (cf., the bride of Frankenstein), her reproductiveorgans -- and yet she retains certain reptilian traits, like scales, that natural selection should have dropped long ago. Moreover, some ofher features seem to be either plastic or metal. What the hell kind ofevolution do you call this? We evolve into creatures of plastic? Andthermosets at that, because both the alien and her newborn baby fallinto a lake of fire and that's that. Not that the movie misses the cliché of the supposedly dead bodyleaping back into life -- or any of the other formulaic jolts we'vecome to expect from strictly commercial ventures like this. There are amultitude of CGIs, mostly disgusting slimy worm-like things thatstrangle people or suck out their brains and -- well, you get thepicture. I'll mention the final cliché. When the creature is destroyedand the team departs the field in victory, a bit of limp alien flesh isleft behind. A sewer rat nibbles on it, then flashes out a tiny alientongue and consumes another rat. This is the signal that there is to bea sequel -- "Species II" -- which followed apace.Ugh.

Learn to accept it as a near porno flick, and it's quite fun

While "Species" has as its actual plot a group of scientists lookingfor an escaped alien specimen - did somebody say "Alien" ripoff? - Iderived that the whole movie was really an excuse to show off NatashaHenstridge's breasts. If in fact that was the film's purpose, then theydid a pretty good job with it (seriously, not many movies get sexierthan this). If the flick was supposed to have any real purpose beyondthat, then I don't know what they were thinking. Just accept that themovie probably got made with the aim of sexually arousing teenage boys, and it'll be perfectly easy to enjoy the flick. Personally, I wouldn'tmind getting slinky with that alien babe! Also starring Ben Kingsley,Michael Madsen, Marg Helgenberger and Forest Whitaker. I don't knowwhether or not they want to stress this film when discussing theircareers.

She'll kill anyone who gets in her way

When a lab experiment goes awry, two doctors, an Empath and a man whoexcels at killing are sent to retrieve the escaped specimen. She hasthe appearance of a normal woman, but Sil has half the DNA of anextra-terrestrial(I know, when *will* those eggheads learn?), and wedon't know her limitations. One thing is for sure. She wants to mate. While this cheesy little sci-fi horror flick(reminiscent of those fromthe 50's) is silly and clichéd, it is also surprisingly engaging, andeffort was put into making the script hold up... unusual for thissub-genre. We get a great and talented cast, and they deliver fairlygood performances. Madsen is cool, Kingsley is determined, and Whitakeris hypersensitive. All three do well. This is downright creepy andscary, with tension, several nice jumps and some truly grotesque sightsand sounds. The creature is built up well, with a chilling design(andwho could forget the "nightmare train sequence"?) courtesy of H.R.Giger, famous for "fathering" the Alien for Ridley Scott's classic. This has reasonably solid production values(even if one explosion seemsto get turned into three with the use of cheap zooming in), with greatpractical FX. The CGI is dated, and perhaps it wasn't impressive tobegin with. This is genuinely funny. The concept isn't bad. And thiswas the first role for the incredibly stunning Natasha Henstridge. Whatshe may lack in skill she more than makes up for in willingness tostrip in front of the camera and appearance. She's naked for half herscreen-time! This is pretty exploitative, as you may have guessed. Weget plenty of bloody, gory violence, nudity and sex, several hot chicksand a bit of strong language. The DVD comes with a trailer for this andits direct sequel. I recommend this to any fan of this type of movie.6/10

Great Si-Fi Film

There is plenty of action in this film dealing with people from anotherplanet who send information to some scientists who are interested inUFO's and communicating with them. These scientists obtain informationfrom outer space about a DNA embryo which they fertilize and a baby bymistake is born and escapes into the world. Xavier Fitch, (BenKingsley) is in charge of this experiment and calls in a group ofpeople who can help him locate where this baby has disappeared to. Dr.Laura Baker, (Marg Helgenberger) assists Xavier in their search andfinds out that this baby is no longer a child but a full grown womanand they have to locate this person quickly because she has alreadykilled quite a few people and desperately wants to have a baby whenevershe can find the most suitable man. There is plenty of blood and gutsand very romantic scenes which usually wind up in a blood bath death.Marg Helgenberger, star of CSI Las Vegas gave an outstandingperformance in this film and I can fully understand why she wasselected to star in the CSI TV Series where she deals with DNA all thetime.

Not like Alien, but a decent Sci-fi thriller!

I watched this film twelve years ago on cinemax, and I will be honest that this film is definately a good 90s' Sci-fi thriller. This film is like taking elements from Alien and Basic Instinct and transforming it into something that has never been achieved in the genere of Science fiction. I like how the story goes in the picture, the cast is well played, and the visuals are a good pinch on top. Not since the first Alien film has there been such a terrifying thriller to ever scare you out of your wits. The premise of the film involves a top-secret military experiment operated by a high-security government installation led by Dr. Xaiver Fitch (played by oscar-winner Ben Kingsley). The project involves crossing human DNA with a new sequence of extraterrestial genes, which was part of a interstellar message that S.E.T.I. had recieved from outer space. The outcome of the experiment resulted in the birth of a female human/alien hybird code named; Sil. Sil goes through a growth acceleration process where she matures to the age of 12 in a matter of months. Believing that the specimen is a threat to all of mankind, Dr. Fitch and his followers decide to terminate the experiment, including Sil(played by oscar-nominee Michelle Williams at the age of 12). While attempting to neutralize the subject, Sil manages to break free from her captivity and escape her creators. Dr. Fitch and his crew realize what a monster and global threat they have unleashed, so Fitch puts together a team of experts to track down and destroy the creature. Among the team is free-lance government agent Press Lennox(played by Michael Madsen), Molecular biologist(played by CSI' Marg Helgenberger), Harvard Anthropologist Stephen Arden(played by Alfred Molina), and criminal psychic Dan Smithson (Played by Oscar-runner Forest Whittaker). The team tracks Sil to the city of Los Angeles, where they discover that Sil has fully grown into a beautiful woman(now played by foxy Natasha Henstridge) and plans to mate with unsuspecting men in order to replace the human race with a fierce predatory race. As humanity hangs at the tip of edge, Fitch and his team race against time to find Sil and stop her from destroying the human race.In my best judgement, Species is a really cool 90s' sci-fi/horror picture. It has elements of Alien for the part in science/horror, references to Basic Instinct with Natasha Henstridge portraying a sexy alien predator out to have sex and kill at the same time, and somehow the X-files tv show almost fits in with the pursuit and the mystery added to it. Ben Kingsley is better known for his Oscar-worthy performances, but he does a good job in this science picture for his first time. The rest of cast give good supporting performances, especially Michael Madsen. One other thing, creature effects designer H.R. Giger did a fantastic job on creating a memorable female monster for this film like he did for the creature design for Alien. Somehow I think that if the Sil creature ran into the monster from Alien they would make a good couple rather than having to go through the hassel in mating with humans. Nevertheless, Species is a good sci-fi/thriller, and I highly recommend renting this movie for a good friday night watch. Also, a word of warning for all those sci-fi thrill seekers out there. Do not bother in renting the sequel to this picture. Believe me, its better to just stick with just this one picture and move on to something else.
