When RB legend Marcus Hooks dies suddenly, VH-1 invites his original back up duo, Floyd Henderson and Louis Hinds, The Real Deal, to appear at a memorial tribute at the Apollo Theater. Floyd, whos bored in retirement, wants this more than anything Louis, a philosophical ex-con, does not. Plus, theres bad blood between them (Louiss wife Odetta left him to marry Floyd - then left Floyd). Floyd begs, Louis consents but wont fly, so they leave L.A. in Floyds flashy Cadillac with five days to get to New York. On the road, they must get back their vocal chops, renew their friendship, and sort out the past. With Floyds bad hip and Louiss bad kidneys, will they even make it?
i saw this movie and laughed all the way thru, the motown music, is wonderful, and i have discovered another soul group, the black sorrows, all i know is i want to go to memphis and dance with sam jackson all nite long on beale street...ironic that bernie mac and issac hayes passed in the same week..anyway this movie was great!!a little heavy on the language but it suited the film..
i don't think the "F" word is necessary to make this picture. i would never let my wife or daughters watch any kind of picture where the only word used is the "F" word. this is an example of poor judgement on the part of the producers and director. i do not recommend this movie, another piece of garbage.
If you love the original Bernie Mac, I mean the Friday,Dollar Bill player's club, original kings of comedy Bernie Mac then this film will surely be in your dvd collection. Mr. Mac is at his best with his hilarious, raunchy, bold and blunt swagger. This is THE FILM of Bernie Mac's career, and it is obviously the film that he wanted to be known for. A great farewell and a MUST SEE for TRUE Bernie Mac fans!!!!
I'm a huge fan of Bernie Mac and this has got to be his best work ever! This movie is what you would call a real laugh out loud till your sides ache comedy!Bernice Mac and Samuel L. Jackson are both ex-soul singers who only put out one record back in the seventies and went their separate ways there after. Due to the death of their previous lead singer they are asked to perform at his funeral and are therefore asked to reunite, even though they are not on the best of terms.Even though I really enjoyed this movie greatly, I must warn everyone there is a considerable amount of adult scenes in the movie and a prolific use of abusive language (m*****f***er) in almost every scene... I think they would have even worked that word into the title if they could! The movie does a great 70's soundtrack which I really enjoyed especially the one when they first hit the road!A great comedy, there is not denying that at all, but it could have done with less obscenity!
I was not expecting a very good movie, but this turned out to be prettywell done. The plot was an old story, but they did a very good jobkeeping it fresh and not distractingly predictable. This would havebeen awful in the hands of anybody other than Bernie Mac and SamuelJackson. Mac's expressions and his earnestness in selling a gag areirrepressible and Jackson knows when to be a straight man and when todeliver something special. Another re-write and some stronger directionwould have made this a classic.During credits they run extended outtakes and an interview with Mac andit is handled with love and respect and it took the potentially creepyfeeling of "their last appearance" away.
THIS FILM CRACKED ME UP. I WAS ROLLIN. This has to be the film of the year for me. I hate that Bernie Mac and Issac Hayes are no longer here. May they both rest peacefully.
What can I say but simply Hilarious! These two guys put together was just perfect! There was never a dull moment with them! I've always loved Samuel L. Jackson and Bernie Mac (Bernie is missed greatly!) this movie never made alot of attention but it should have cause this is one of the best comedy movies I've seen in a long time!
This movie is so funny that it had me and my family crying from laughter, holding onto our sides and rocking back & forth in our chairs! This is a fitting tribute to the comic genius of the late great Bernie Mac, who had such chrisma and that good ol' down home humor like a crazy uncle who always comes to the family reunions and lights it up! He's in great form here and it seems to me, a bit reflective, as if he knew that this would be his last statement to the world! If you watch the special features, you'll see what I mean.Samuel Jackson plays the grizzled world-weary sidekick with finesse! He and Mac shared a great chemistry and comraderie and boy, it shows! The supporting cast all pulled their weight too and delivered funny moments as well. Also, this movie was the swan song for one of the latter 20th Century's great musical minds...The Black Moses...Issac Hayes!!In the late 60's thru early 70's, he was a musical & cultural force to be reckoned with!--Later he proved himself to be a good actor, and of course the younger generations knew him as the voice of "Chef" from the now iconic "Southpark".It's uncanny that both he and Bernie Mac passed away right after this movie was finished, on the exact same weekend! Well, if ever there was a time capsule for these two..here it is! Hayes' music is featured throughout as well. This is definitely one to add to your collection.RIP BERNIE MAC (1957-2008) and Issac Hayes (1942-2008)
This review is from: Soul Men (DVD) Bernie and Samuel make a hell of a team. I laughed until I cried. I have watched this over and over again. Well worth the little money i spent on it
"Soul Men" is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. The chemistrybetween Bernie Mac and Samuel L. Jackson could not have been plannedbetter. I was left wondering if they had indeed known each other inreal life for thirty-plus years. Admittedly, I am a Bernie fan; his TVshow was the best sitcom on the air. Mac's habit of addressing"America" was fresh and highly entertaining. There are some elements of "Soul Men" that reminded me of the oldermovie, "The Blues Brothers". Aging musicians, one an ex-con, looking toput the old band back together and taking a cross-country road trip inthe process all conspired to make the analogy inevitable. But Soul Menhas a very different pathos and a richer theme. The language at timesis uncomfortably rough, but hey; these are two guys, and the roughnessis never gratuitous. There are many moments that were so uproariously funny, I can't recallthe last time I have laughed so hard. There are comedians, verysuccessful ones, that can become somewhat grating after a very shorttime. Not so Bernie Mac. Bernie is so easy to relate to, he makes thecommonplace seem like a new adventure. A new, very funny adventure.Toothless barflies, AARP, a crooked nephew, the entertainment industry, aging, paternity confusion, and an interesting portrayal of gangsterrap are all fair targets in this unexpectedly great movie. The pacingis fast and steady, and while the plot is a little derivative, BernieMac and Samuel L Jackson make it work wonderfully. The only faults I found in this movie mainly had to do with continuity.Nit pickers will have a field day. But for people like me, people wholike decent movies and like Bernie Mac and Samuel Jackson, these punythings matter not. This is not family entertainment. Leave the kids, the prudes, and theself-righteous at home. If you enjoy the comedy styling of Bernie Mac,and you enjoy A-list performers like Samuel L. Jackson, you are goingto have a great time.
NEVER REALLY ENJOYED BERNIE MACS MOVIES BUT I FINALLY GOT IT IN THIS MOVIE, I WILL BE RENTING ALL HIS MOVIES NOW!!!! LOVE YA!!!!!!!!
In these days of Hollywood movies aimed at 12 to 14 year olds, this comes across as clever and not too formulaic.Mac and Jackson are an updated black Hope and Crosby with street lingo comedic exchanges that actually had me laughing. This is no minor feat, as I can't remember a recent comedy over the past couple of years that had me smiling (In Bruges did have its moments though). Two of the more memorable scenes are: 1.Mac choking their dead band leader as he argues with Jackson about why they broke up.Oh yeah, they're in a piano shaped coffin,on stage at the Apollo theater.2.Jackson jumping out of a shared bed in disgust, because Mac had mistakenly taken a Viagra(instead of a heart pill) with the obvious results, was another pretty classic moment. When I initially saw the previews in the theater,I figured it was another silly piece of Hollywood garbage, but I was VERY wrong.
My wife and I saw this movie on opening day and it was good! It wasalso good to see Bernie, Isaac, and Sam in this movie. My stomach hurtfrom laughing so hard! My wife told me to stop laughing so loud andhard I was disturbing the other people in the theater...what a funnyshow. I will truly miss Bernie and Isaac they are a part of my lifeforever. Toooo Funny:) What a wining movie for the audience. We arehoping that this movie breaks box office record for the cast of thismovie since it was so entertaining. Good luck to the producer and histeam. I would appreciate getting a poster of the the movie to hang onthe wall in my house. Great show!
When I first saw the movie, I was completely blown away from thismovie! It is absolutely hilarious! This is one of the most funny moviesI have ever watched. Bernie Mac was absolutely terrific in the movie. Ihaven't seen this kind of performance for years. I Can't even fullydescribe him...he is electrifying in Soul Men. For me he is one of thebest comedians ever. I love it when he makes that crazy eye look. The movie is by far the best comedy of 2008! It's full of the thattypical humor in the "black" comedies. I have not been laughing as thisfor a long, long time! I Wanted to see this movie again and again, ican't stop watching it! If you look for a superb comedy - THIS IS THEMOVIE! Forget Burn after reading and all other so called comedies!
I would recommend this movie for adults. If you want a good comedy and don't mind profanity then you would enjoy this movie. It was worth every penny I paid for it and more.
This review is from: Soul Men (DVD) Some may find it funny not all, it is because it too offensive with too much of bad words and too much of naked intercourse going on, my christian mom turned her mom wouldn't watch it. I already knew from a sec. when I saw first part that she would not watch it because when he was in bed with a woman that made him speaking gibberlish ...I was like oh man! Mom ain't gotta like it. anyway I kept it to watch it for myself, my bro, or dad also family/friends. I also don't blame ppl who don't want to. But at the end, it is like too nice with his friend and him making a bonding with daughter.
I just returned from seeing "Soul Men". I laughed so hard. Samuel LJackson is such a versatile actor. I love him in so many movies. Samand Bernie played well off each other. And please stay for the creditsbecause there is some scenes of Bernie being interviewed and doing hiscomedy act. He uses the f word in his act.It was very funny seeing Sam in corn rows and with the gray in them. That alone is worth seeing. It was very nice that they dedicated the movie to Bernie Mac and IssacHayes who died one day apart from each other. They will both be missed.Samuel keep on making these wonderful movies.
This review is from: Soul Men (DVD) I expected more from this movie. There were very few truly funny moments although I am fans for both actors.
Sit back and relax, because you're in for a ride. I think I didn't saythese corny terms in a review before, but you know what, it's the timeto say it, while meaning a good thing too. This is a good old odd couple buddy comedy, written as a kind ofmusical road movie. I loved the script. It made good riot along theway, with nice games too (the matter of your daughter, my daughter. I'mso sick, you're so sick, etc). The comic lines were many and slick. However you have to feel that the comedy was lesser than the potentialof the story and the cast. For instance it didn't need to bare someactor to make laughs, what it did need was less easy and poor handlingthan that !(Bernie Mac) and (Samuel L. Jackson) are perfect. And maybe moreperfect with each other. I wasn't a (Bernie Mac) fan until this movieby the way (very late I know !). Everything about him here is adorable, and I'm not talking out of nostalgia caused by his death. Look at theway he laughs that sarcastic, extremely idiot, laugh, or look at hiscrying over canceling his performance; OK, that moment was historical;I mean his only competitor would be (James Dean) in East of Eden (1955)through another crying scene. (Mac) portrayed pain there as it shouldbe. The selection of songs did wonderfully. And the 2 leads' performancewasn't less wonderful. I have never imagined that (Mac) and (Jackson)could sing this catchy. The climax of this movie's fun remains in thescene inside the coffin; that was both hilarious and sentimental. Now, to the problems. Hmmm, not many though. Sure the ocean of the Fwords. I don't think that black people, out of Hollywood movies, swearin this superabundant way, and I don't think that it serves any comedyor drama, and I don't think that our ears are supposed to be trashboxes for that matter ! The F words with its derivatives run boringlyand nastily while consuming them non-stop. The back projections, withthe desert image, seemed too fake. Then, (Mac) was 50 year old, whichmakes him at least 10 years younger than his character. That was clearfrom the start, especially with the presence of someone older andfitter for his character like (Jackson) who was 60 year old. It was called with names like "having unoriginal script", lacking morecomic situations, and ending pretty fast, but despite this or that, itworked, managing eventually to be delightful and colorful time onscreen. And although (Soul Men) is 2 men show, but (Mac) was the onewho stole it meritoriously.
This review is from: Soul Men (DVD) This movie was a great memorial to the great Bernie Mac. He is sorely missed!!!
