Egglesfield and Goodwin's chemistry makes it a time pass.

SOMETHING BORROWED – CATCH IT ( C+ ) Something Borrowed is nothing newor unusual. It's the same story over and over again with differentfaces. Hollywood is trying hard to make Ginnifer Goodwin the nestAmerica's sweetheart but trust me it takes more than comedic timing tobe America's sweetheart. Kate Hudson is same didn't tried a single biteto make something out of character. Colin Egglesfield is charming andto be honest Egglesfield and Goodwin chemistry was the reason thismovie is little tolerable. John Krasinski is overrated, he is alwayssame in the show or in the movie. Steve Howey was forced into it.Overall, there is nothing new but Egglesfield and Goodwin's chemistrymakes it a time pass.

Trash

Cheating, dishonesty, manipulation, catiness... and some people think this is a nice romantic comedy? No wonder American morals are going down the toilet...

Comedy or satire?

Nice Girls Don’t, Good Girls DoSomething Borrowed begins happy and frivolous. Nice chit chat. But ultimately finds humor in ironic ridicule. The social philosophy starts out socially positive (naïve?), but ends socially negative (sophisticated?). The humor begins light hearted and ends with ridicule.Rachel’s best friend Darcy has a perfect relationship and engagement with Dex, a young ladies man, actually a gentleman. Darcy is a bon vivant and Rachel is a moralist, which is odd for a lawyer. The problem is Rachel falls for Dex, maybe she always did love him in the closet over the years, and finally Rachel sleeps with Dex, Darcy’s fiancé.The movie is mostly shown from Rachel’s point of view, what Rachel knows and experiences. So, the movie is somewhat of a revelation . And the viewer learns about the big unknown picture of life as Rachel does. Most movies appear to be omniscient because of the omniscient camera, but some movies like this one are mostly a third person limited point of view. Life is like a movie. The individual only knows what the individual experiences, so people and situations are like mysteries which slowly reveal themselves, often ironically, from experience or hearsay. In Something Borrowed, mostly the viewer is Rachel and identifies with Rachel. No. I am not a transvestite. Rachel is the focal point of the story movie.Something Borrowed is a comedy, but mostly it is a morality play. All’s fair in love and war? No. Not in either. The movie begins as a happy friendly comedy about ideal relationships--friendship, fun, socializing, laughs, hopes, dreams---perhaps the beginning is naïve and superficial, but nice. But as the movie progresses the people and situations become less ideal and more imperfect. I can understand that. Star crossed friends and lovers.Slowly the movie turns away from romantic social idealism toward sarcasm and social and romantic criticism. I like the escapist idealism, but I understand or identify with the sarcasm more personally. The sarcasm got me at “hello”.I like chick flicks. Two women are credited with writing the screenplay, so I guess this is a feminine point of view. Men and women not only look different, they often think differently, have different desires and goals in life. As a chick flick Something Borrowed is a satirical bubble burster. The acting was “good”, that is natural or persuasive, real. The acting and direction was probably good because the script was good, and the actors knew it. They had the feeling, “I can do this. I KNOW this person, this story.” The movie has sincerity. It is not a phony. The humor is more witty than dumb.Good casting or type casting. The actors and actresses made the characters their own. The characters seemed real. Rachel makes a nice conscientious best friend, whose own actions are justified by the actions of others, namely Darcy, ultimately. Dex is conventional and conscientious, a gentleman philanderer. Marcus was a little anti-social, immature, competitive, and too outspoken or frank for chit chat. Ethan a little nerdy, but a good friend. And Claire provided some comedy as the aggressive rejected female. Kate Hudson was especially well cast as the flippant Darcy. Hudson seems to have had in some movies the same “I’m too good for this and these people” attitude or demeanor her mother developed in later movies. Goldie Hawn seemed to transform on film over the years from a vivacious, silly, giggly, pixie, to a social snob. Goldie went from cute to glamorous. I noticed Kate Hudson seemed to have the same snobbish quality in some films, less so in this recent movie. Basically, a swinger, a little arrogance suits Darcy well. And Hudson has a nice look. While she may have got her mother’s figure, mostly it appears she got her father’s facial characteristics. A little poetic justice there. (hint: I read she didn't get along with her father) There is a tag to this movie after the credits, don’t miss it. Most people in the theatre did. What was the significance of the final ending tag? I’m not sure. I suppose Darcy’s back-up plan didn’t work and maybe Ethan was more of a ladies man than we thought he was. Ultimately, this nice friendly respectable social romance finds humor in irony and sarcasm. I hate to say I liked this movie because I am also a sarcastic social and romantic loser, but that’s the reason. Consolation. However, I think I could enjoy a nicer, idealistic social romance with a more positive attitude toward socializing and romance too. Something Borrowed is not a MEAN movie; I think it is just trying to be honest and self-expressive, even if the honesty and self-expression is a little anti-social. Yea. Honesty in art and movie, that’s what it is about. Art, real communication and commentary is NOT phony. Art is NOT a marketing strategy. Movies should NOT be a planned sales campaign. Maybe that is why so few artists are allowed to work in Hollywood. It is a pleasure to see at least a few honest films make it through the movie business hierarchy.“Something borrowed” is an apt descriptive title for philandering. What is for keeps? The movie is a funny, ironic, thoughtful, sincere situational comedy. Not for Puritans.

Something Borrowed

This review is from: Something Borrowed (Movie-Only Edition) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) Very pleasant comedy/romance advancing the belief true love happens and will find you, if you let it? Self esteem held the relationship she wanted at bay until the realization she was the hold up? fun and heart warming.

Barely worth the time

This review is from: Something Borrowed (Amazon Instant Video) Something BorrowedYes, most romantic comedies have a frustrating side, but this film overdid on the total frustration. And truly, even the ending was frustrating...so if you like frustration with little to no laughs, this is the film for you.

nice movie

This review is from: Something Borrowed (DVD) Movie was good, for a romantic comedy it was not too unrealistic and the only reason 1 star was taken off was for that it was hard to watch the gal opposite Kate Hudson suffer under her selfishness sooooooooooo long, but that drove home the point and set up the ending....pleasant weekend watch.

A praise of adultery, selfishness and disloyalty.

This movie had potential to make a cute love story. However, instead of doing so, it took a very different approach. The worthwhile match was left to the wayside to make room for a relationship that has no conceivable way of surviving, since it is based on lies, adultery and disloyalty. The two main characters are selfish adultresses, yet the movie seems to find one more innocent than the other. It seems that the attempt is to cause the viewer to approve of the one because she is normally a "good person," but the outcome leaves the viewer in complete disgust of her selfishness and disloyalty to her childhood friend. In the end she is proud of her adultery and destruction of a life-long relationship, because she was able to get what she had wanted for so long. How can one's morals and sense of decency be so degraded that one can appreciate this character and her accomplishment? There was one character in the movie who was incredibly likable, kind and a perfect match for the lead character. However, the development of his character is a complete waste, since he just gets his heart broken and is left by the wayside, so that the lead character may reek havoc on the other relationships in her life.I watch pretty much every chick flick that comes out, and I have seen a number of cheesy and poorly developed ones, but this one simply disgusted me.

Not what I expected...

I thought that this movie was going to be like all the rest of the boring happy ending movies... But in this case it was not in my opinion. I really liked the casting as well as the movie overall. I hope others do too!

Pocket_boy 2012-05-18 09:47:32

So morally conflicting!

I went in to this movie expecting a fun light-hearted funny romanticcomedy. Boy was i wrong! It started out on an okay note with a tackysurprise party for Rachel (Goodwin) thrown by her life-long best friendDarcy (Hudson), and did i mention life long? We'll come back to that.well no more then ten minutes later Rachel has slept with Dex(Egglesfield) Darcy's fiancé. Now let me remind you that Rachel andDarcy have been best friends since early childhood. The rest of the movie is tennis game of rationalization and guilt witha few smatterings of clever witty one liners. and in the end Darcy andRachel's relation ship is completely ruined and Rachel and Dex livehappily ever after. In the final scene after Dacry has discovered theaffair and not seen Rachel for two months they meet on a city street, and you think that maybe there is going to be some kind of redemption, but Darcy says to Rachel "I bought him that shirt" and you notice thedry cleaning held over Rachel's shoulder, a few more words are tradedabout how Darcy is truly happy now, and Rachel goes into the arms ofDex.The movie was a rationalization for sleeping with your best friendsfiancé, and forbidden love prevailing. I was very disappointed thismovie, purely on content, acting was pretty good otherwise....

A Simply Unbearable Group of People

'Something Borrowed' is based on the novel of the same name by EmilyGriffin which I've never heard of. It concerns a group ofthirtysomethings as they struggle through a love rectangle or trapezoidor whatever shape is made up by Kate Hudson ('How to Lose a Guy in 10Days'), Ginnifer Goodwin ('Big Love'), John Krasinski ('The Office'),and the unfortunately named Colin Egglesfield ('Melrose Place'). It'salso occasionally a love pentagon or hexagon if you count AshleyWilliams & Steve Howey. As are typical in stories about differentlyshaped loves, there's lots of betrayal amongst friends, panicking ofunfaithfuls, heartfelt conversations covered in rain, and unnecessarystupidity of everyone involved. . . but, that last bit is expected inany romance, cinematic or real. One major problem with a film about infidelity is that it's impossibleto really like anyone involved with the scandal. Here, we only have theRachel, the woman who betrays her friend (Goodwin); Dex, the fiancé whobetrays his love (Egglesfield); and, Darcy, the woman betrayed by both(Hudson). Typically, you can associate with those cheated on solelythrough sympathy, but that was made difficult for two reasons: 1)Darcy's a secondary character who seems to always act like that girlwho always gets too drunk at college parties; and, 2) The movieconstantly acts as if it's going to reveal something negative about herpast (spoiler: it does). Granted, no one deserves to be hurt this wayfor being annoying, but she's still not an enjoyable character towatch. Maybe things would be different if Darcy and Rachel's roles wereswapped, but we all know of hindsight's perfection. Left alone behindall this despicable behaviour is the typical nice guy Ethan (Krasinski)who, along only with Dex's dad, acts as a voice of reason in the film.Unfortunately, he's like an umbrella in a hurricane, unable to rescuethis mess of humanity from themselves. Now, I suppose this is a film that's not meant to be enjoyed on thelevel of a typical romantic comedy; but, with this cast and a sugary, generic title like 'Something Borrowed,' a viewer should not be forcedto withstand the cringe-inducing behaviour like that of Dex & Rachel.Never have I so wanted the leads of a romance to be hit by a New Yorkcabbie. Then again, I also wished that fate upon myself for a while toalleviate the misery of watching these monsters. Clearly, writer JennieSnyder & director Luke Greenfield, who have both successfully worked inromance before this film, have talent that should carry them throughtheir futures, but a film this unlikable was not their best stepforward to that future. A romance hasn't been this depressing sincelast year's 'Blue Valentine,' but at least that film succeeded becauseof its sad nature and didn't have to battle against it.Final Verdict: 4/10.-AP3-

mediocre

This review is from: Something Borrowed (Amazon Instant Video) Movie was rarely funny and barely worth the time we invested in it. I think Kate Hudson phoned this one in.

jjorgenson01 2012-05-16 04:13:18

Worth It?

I read the book when it was first out, related with the characters. Allin all, I thought it was a good movie as far as interpreting the book.I have read all the books and was sure to read them one more timebefore going to the movie so that I had a refreshed comparison in myhead.Yet, I still couldn't help do what I tend to do after a movie and thinkabout how I would have done it. Like have Rachel narrate, or cut outthe part of Dex crying...he looked so awkward and constipated, at leastmake it look like he was really hurt. I wouldn't have made Claire thatbad. The friendship between Rachel and Darcy was true, but I wasn'timpressed with Kate Hudson's performance. It seemed like she had a hardtime getting in touch with her character. She wasn't real until the endof the movie. The beach scene with just Darcy and Dex was awkward forpeople who were getting married, but when they are playing badmintonwas great. Ethan totally stole that scene and many others. He seemed tobe one of the only ones that could make himself the actual character. Iwould have introduced Dex and Rachel's relationship by elaborating onthem, it was about them anyway.I loved that Emily Giffin was actually in the scene where Rachel andMarcus were in the park, with the book 'Something Blue'. I do think itwould be great to keep going because as much as I loved the booked'Something Borrowed', I think that the transition into 'Something Blue'will give you unexpected. So I did enjoy the movie, even going into it with no expectations frombeing disappointed so many times after I read a book turned movie. Ilaughed, I cried, I related to the characters. I walked out of thetheatre feeling good and refreshed. It's more of a drama than romanticcomedy and I think it is worth watching. I will buy the DVD. It will bemy feel good movie.

Something Superficial!

'SOMETHING BORROWED': Two and a Half Stars (Out of Five) Romantic comedy/drama based on the best selling book of the same nameby Emily Giffin (which is the first in a series) about an insecureyoung lawyer who falls for an attractive law schoolmate only to havehim stolen by her abusive best friend. The film stars Ginnifer Goodwin,Kate Hudson, Colin Egglesfield and John Krasinski It was directed byLuke Greenfield (who also directed one of my favorite romantic comedies'THE GIRL NEXT DOOR') and written by Jennie Snyder (who's only otherwriting experience is sappy TV melodrama like '90210' and 'GILMOREGIRLS'). The film had a lot of potential to be an honest well thoughtout character study about friendship and love but it drowns in sappyromcom clichés.Goodwin plays Rachel, a lawyer who fell in love with her schoolmate Dex(Egglesfield) in law school but never got up the courage to tell him(due to the fact that she thought he was too good looking for her). Dexalso had feelings for her but being the prettyboy that he is, andalways being used to women making the first move on him, waited forRachel to come on to him. So when she didn't and her self-centeredabusive (but good looking) best friend Darcy (Hudson) did, Dex decidedto go for her instead. Several years later Dex and Darcy are engagedand Rachel blurts out one drunk night that she used to have a crush onDex which then leads to an affair between the two. They then strugglein deciding what to do about their feelings without hurting Darcy. Thewhole time Rachel confides in her other good childhood buddy Ethan(Krasinski), who's actually nice and cares for Rachel, who also hasbeen keeping his feelings from somebody. The film deals with a lot of interesting and relatable relationshipissues (at least for me) but doesn't come to a satisfying conclusion onany of them. First off the casting is all wrong; Goodwin is way tooattractive to play a plain and constantly single nerd, which is almostalways the case in Hollywood films (they're consistently trying torelate to the insecure and 'unattractive' but then cast someone thecomplete opposite of 'unattractive' in the role). Hudson is beautifulbut not nearly as ideally 'drop dead gorgeous' as the role should haverequired (she's not anymore physically attractive than Goodwin really).Egglesfield is the perfect example of a prettyboy but he's so woodenand uninteresting, why would anyone like Rachel even be into him?! Themovie is supposed to be an argument against superficiality when it isin fact just as superficial as it's characters.I've read several viewer comments that question why someone like Rachelwould put up with a friend like Darcy but this is where the film ismost relatable to me and I think it happens quite often in life. Oftentimes the less confident and more insecure will stick by friends whotreat them like s--- and constantly take advantage of them out of somesense of loyalty and feelings of moral responsibility (I know I have). It will usually reach a breaking point though and if the abused growsstronger, and wise enough, they'll finally realize it needs to come toan end. I thought this was the area of the film that was the strongestbut in the end there really wasn't enough of it. The romance became toomuch of a focus point and it was far too fake, forced and distastefulin my opinion. I also didn't like how the movie kind of blamed Rachelfor not saying something to Dex earlier on when Dex could have just aseasily said something to her. I have friends (sexist and somewhat oldfashioned) who still think it's always the man's responsibility to makethe first move. I think that's definitely an outdated and ridiculousbelief but in this case I think the guy definitely should have made thefirst move. Usually the people who don't often date and feel insecureare less likely to say something and make a move, the fact that Dexalways needed to be pursued and some sort of a prize is another reasonwhy he didn't deserve Rachel. You have to give the film some credit forfleshing out these issues that are somewhat important and relatable toalmost everyone but how it handles them from there on out is prettyweak.Watch our review show 'MOVIE TALK' at:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sd0S1srQ9T8

Horrible movie with terrible dialogue and storyline

We watched this on the plane and while I'm a big fan of Krasinki from The Office, this movie was terrible. It had horrible dialogue and the storyline is uninspired. Would you ever cheat on your best friend? It left a bad taste in my mouth.

Twodude Review 2012-05-14 15:45:08

Something Borrowed? maybe. Worth renting? maybe not.

As is often the case with films geared toward women, better known as"chick flicks", "it's been done before"; and Something Borrowed isnothing different. If you are looking for a romantic comedy, withoutmuch thought having been put into it, then you've found it. DirectorLuke Greenfield, who also directed The Girl Next Door, tries to do somethings differently with this movie. Unfortunately, he doesn't do awhole lot to make it memorable. The film could have easily been cutback 20 minutes and would have worked as a decent date movie.Basically, the movie is far too long for a romantic comedy.Kate Hudson and Ginnifer Goodwin are adorable, as expected, but neitheris gives a Meg Ryan romantic comedy style performance. I wouldn't evengo as far as saying that this was a Kate Hudson romantic comedyperformance; this was a distant performance to How to Lose a Guy in 10Days. I do believe you are going to see more of Ginnifer Goodwin inromantic comedies because of her cuteness; so I hope there is a bettermovie out there for her. As with most romantic comedies it's about the"chicks" and this one isn't any different. James Krasinski gives afunny part to the movie as the "friend" role and Colin Egglesfieldplays a solid part as Dex, the object of both women's affection. If it's in the Redbox for a buck and you want to score some points withyour wife/girlfriend this is just as good as any other romantic comedyout there. This is the type of movie that when it's on HBO 3 years fromnow you won't remember that you saw it.Grade: CVisit our site at www.twodudereview.com

Good actors, bad moral

I give this movie 8 out of 10 stars because I actually enjoyed watchingit. The acting was what gave this movie all 8 of the stars. It wasbelievable, as the characters really drew me in. Most of the time, chick flicks seem cheap with unbelievable obnoxious characters. Butthis show showed a little more realism and heart. There were good sides and bad sides to all of the characters. Okay somost people will end up hating Darcy because of what she did concerningher fiancé, and the fact that she treated the lead so badly. But therewere moments where she did sincerely seem to have a heart. She was aselfish person. But she also had amazing qualities of being able to letgo, have fun, and be a strong opinionated woman. A lot of strong peopleare a bit "selfish," so the two qualities can naturally go hand inhand. The lead (Rachel) was also interesting. She cared greatly and alwayswanted others to be happy, yet she had weaknesses and did not stand upfor herself. Personally I only half liked her character. My favorite was the "best friend" (Ethan). He was funny and actuallyspoke the words that the audience was probably thinking. I would haveliked to see him and Rachel get together. I think that would haveturned out the best for all parties. Having two weak people together isnot going to lead to the healthiest of relationships. I can see thecommunication breakdown already as Rachel carries on with fake smilesand hides her feelings when something goes wrong.I thought I saw a little jealousy in Hudson's character. I found itinteresting that she stole the man (Ethan) that she knew her bestfriend had interest in, and then cheated with the man (Marcus) shethought was going to make it with her best friend at the beach house. It seemed like she wanted what her best friend had, from controllingher every move, making her a servant, and stealing any man who hadinterest in her.Needless to say, this movie's plot and message was terrible.Interesting, yet did not provide any worthwhile morals. People did badthings and got rewarded in the end and the only good guy gets left inthe dust. Well, okay, it did have the moral of standing up for oneselfand taking chances. Though, it sort of ruined that moral at the endwhen Rachel said how much she missed Darcy and lied about being jealousof her just to placate her. After that little scene I wondered whethershe had learned anything at all from her new found freedom from hermaster. Anyway, hopefully no one who hasn't seen Something Borrowed is readingthis due to the spoilers, but I would recommend watching it if you likechick flicks in general. It's a fun little ride and has its romanticparts.

Potential with Flaws cut through it's Spine

An interesting premise, girl falls in love with her best friend'sfiancée. There is so much potential in that simple sentence, and nodoubt why the film got green lit, and like pretty much every other filmmade these days, it's based on a book, hooray!! let's condense 350pages of well received prose into 100 pages of screenplay and let itendure countless bouts of studio heads, producer, director and testscreening feedback at mall to produce 100 minutes of film material. What was wrong with this film? i haven't read the book, and I willnever have any desire to do so.. I don't care about the book, I watchedthe film adaptation of it, that's what i'm "reviewing".. Kate Hudson'scharacter has absolutely no redeeming quality to her whatsoever.. sheis loathsome in pretty much every regard.. there is literally a minutearound the time the 3rd act kicks in, when we feel an iota of sympathyfor her, literally less than a minute.. but she is essentially thevillain in the film, and fair enough as her character is the onestopping our lovebirds from getting together.. so what's wrong withthat? well for starters, she is supposedly the most absolute bestfriend of our heroine, we're told this through a completely forcedvideo presentation at the start, where we're shown an immaculately shotslideshow of the two characters as kids being cute and slightly lesbofor each other.. and that is literally the only actual evidence orvisual proof we get that these two people are more or less sisters orkindred spirits.. because i defy you to point out any one single momentin the rest of the film where you would believe that to be the case...other than them doing a highly choreographed dance sequence in theirPJ's in that aforementioned end of 2nd act part of the film where they"bond".Ginnifer Goodwin is ideal casting, she's cute and attractive, and issomeone I feel most girls will easily relate to, she is quintessentialgirl next door that will let her hair down.. it's basically hard tohate her.. yet within 10 minutes, I lost most respect for her characterwhen it was told to me that she was best friend's with Hudson (i'm notgoing to bother with their character names, because apart from the Dexand Sex rhyming dialogue I have no reason to remember any of thecharacter's names). Then we come to Dex, the Tom Cruise after a heavy night out lookalike, again like Goodwin's character, there is really nothing to hate ordislike about the guy, he seems decent enough and likable.. except forthe fundamental crime that he somehow has been able to be with, and getengaged to Hudson for a significant part of his life. Why?.. noseriously why?? are we genuinely to believe Hudson during the onemoment she cares to share any actual human feelings, that they aretogether because he needs a wild child in his life, and she needs aboring straight up non person to balance her? or is it because as shesays early on "hot people deserve to be with hot people" or somethinglike that.. So let me get this straight, Dex falls in love with Goodwin in college, but is too shy to make a move.. fair enough.. but the second herpromiscuous friend comes along, and he feels he is being set up withher, he somehow ends up being engaged to her? and his dying mother ishappy about this because he is marrying a seemingly loose woman insteadof someone that on paper is ideal for him? Let's respect this guy evenmore, because he is willing to ruin his life, the life of Hudson'scharacter, and the life of his potential children, just so his mothercan be happy for the last few years of her life? oh but it's okay..because she's his sweet little mother that smiles ever so dearly to thecamera during a moment of crisis for him.I don't like to dismay American film-making.. maybe more the studiosystem in general.. i'm not even going to bother looking into whetherthis film was in fact produced through a studio or independently.. i'mnot even going to "blame" Greenfield who directed the brilliant "GirlNext Door".. who truly knows how much influence he had on eitherproject.. all i know is i like the guy from what i've read and heardfrom him.. i'm simply criticising the final product. This had thepotential to be a great drama, or even a brilliant black comedy, thatone sentence I started this review with.. girl falls in love with bestfriend's fiancée.. the possibilities.. the social implications, thepotential to truly explore friendship vs love.. forget the 2 monthslater coda, how about seeing what things would have been like 10 yearslater, after Dex had no choice but to marry Hudson.. it was his childthat was conceived the weekend after he slept with Goodwin, he wasthinking purely of her, he forgot to use a condom.. it was the child hewanted to have with her.. imagine that scene.. or imagine that as a 3rdact.. them meeting 10 years after.. imagine if we truly believedGoodwin and Hudson were best friends, but there was simply somethingstronger than their friendship between Goodwin and Dex, not merely somemoment of shyness during college that prevented them being together.Would it have been as funny?why not.. it's not as if the current incarnation was anything otherthan a laugh every half hour.Potential.. yet again flushed down the toilet of mediocrity. Yes youneed a villain, it helps make a story.. but the best villains arepeople we can relate to.. if you relate to Hudson's character.. find atime machine and service your mother with an abortion.

not even worth $4 - yuck -

This review is from: Something Borrowed (Amazon Instant Video) The plot made absolutely no sense, from beginning to end. It was really awkward as others said. funny enough, the only other movie that was this bad that I stopped wished I had not gone to was fools gold, also with kate hudson.
