In a future in which most water has disappeared from the Earth, we find a group of children, mostly teenagers, who are living at an orphanage, run by the despotic rulers of the new Earth. The group in question plays a hockey based game on roller skates and is quite good. It has given them a unity that transcends the attempts to bring them to heel by the government. Finding an orb of special power, they find it has unusual effects on them. They escape from the orphanage (on skates) and try to cross the wasteland looking for a place they can live free as the stormtroopers search for them and the orb.

This movie has most obviously been made on a very tight budget. It becomesobvious by the fact that the big bad government's military is representedbya surprisingly small number of units including two tanks and eight soldiersonly. Thus, it needs a little imagination to believe the story of a fewkidsfighting a huge Nazi-like system. Furthermore, most costumes seem to berecycled from other movies. Uniforms quite similar to those used by the badguys have been seen in "Dune" and "Battlestar Galactica" before. So, I feltit to be a little hard to get myself into the right mood for letting mymindgo.Nonetheless, the film has a message to tell, and even though that messagehas been around quite a few times, I found it worthwhilewatching.
I have seen Solarbabies (aka Solar Warriors) many times, and I like it. Ifirst saw it on video when I was seven or eight. Looking at it now, (I ownacopy) the plot is a little corny, but when you consider that was prettynormal of movies made in the mid-80's, it's hard to hold that against thisone. For some reason, the "skateball" game that is popular with characters inthemovie almost seems like a knock-off of Rollerball, but that'sokay. If nothing else, it had a terrific cast...Richard Jordan, Jami Gertz,JasonPatric, and Lukas Haas, among others. I'm not sure the movie would havebeenvery good without them.I would rate this movie 3 out of 5 on story and 4 out of 5 on casting. Soabout 3.5 stars...
A film about kids on skates (Gotta capture that Xanadu audience), andAlien Ball and no water. Well it seems I gave away the whole movie justin that sentence. Well there are some good things if you are a fan ofRick Springfield lookalikes. Actually if anything makes this film worth watching it is the lovelyJami Gertz! The scene were she is in the white robe and lit from behinddrove my young blood wild! For those that like the bad girl we have oneof the baddest, Sarah Douglas, looking like she did not change wardrobemuch from her Superman II appearance as Ursa. Looks like she traded onePhantom Zone for another. Still it might be worth a watch just to laugh at some of the 80's-isimsin the film. Like what are they making in the desert factory that burnstires......Hair gel?
Totally stupid 1980s junk has a group of adolescents (Jason Patric, JamiGertz and Lukas Haas among them) finding an orb of special powers in thepost-apocalyptic future. They are really orphans (or prisoners) in afuturethat is run by evil people (Richard Jordan being the main villain here).Ohby the way the youngsters love to skate around and play hockey in thedesert(no kidding). Silly and unnecessary venture for all involved. Still not asbad as some other similar movies of the period, but that is not sayingmuch.2 stars out of 5.
After about 20 years of having little more than vague memories of thismovie rollerskating about in my head, I finally broke down andre-watched Solarbabies. All I can say is, well, bless them for trying. It really isn't a BADmovie... it does manage to be entertaining even though it occasionallydrags. The only problem is that it borrows a lot from other movies andnever seems to decide on a style of its own.Overall I didn't feel as drawn in to the story as I'd hoped, butdespite the somewhat vague plot and generic characters, it was stillgood fun. And if nothing else, it teaches us that all we really need toset things right in the world are friendship and roller skating. Andmaybe a magic ball from outer space.
The story, or rather the spirit beneath the schlocky presentation of SOLARBABIES is rather wonderful. It must be veiwed in terms of its symbolism. The kids are not following a glowing ball, they are following an ideal, a higher consciousness that we all possess if we can only find it. The water represents a sacred nourishment that comes from the depths of the cosmos. Most of us have forgotten how to access that nourishment, most of us have lost sight of that 'sphere of light'. It's unfortunate that even the movie's director did not understand these meanings, nor did the producers nor the more famous, and over-paid of the two writers. Consequently they all worked too hard to create another B-science fiction movie. This movie could have been a classic.
Yeah, when I teenager this movie was the ilk that I remember of the1980's. Watching it now over 20 years later it is so corny with the80's break dancing music and pointless plot. What caught my eye ofcourse was a 20 year old Jami Gertz and the white robe scene where youcould see her whole naked body. Nothing left to the imagination. Iwonder sometimes if she really knew what the producers were trying todo with the bright light behind her so you could see through the whiterobe. Either way that was the first I ever heard of her as an actressand I have enjoyed her spunky wit ever since in her movies. Reallyloved her in "The lost boys" movie as well. Now at 42, she is stillpretty and funny and I have caught her on the sitcom called StillStanding on Lifetime (yeah I'm a guy and I watch Lifetime with my wife)and Jami is still funny with her sweet but sarcastic attitude.
Granted, this movie is a permanent fixture of the 1980's it is still very entertaining to watch over again as many times possible. As a fan of cheesy movies and believe me the 1980's is saturated in them, and "Solarbabies" is no exception here. What makes movies classics is that is takes you back in time to when your favorite stars in TV and movies were younger and the events that follow through provides a nostalgic look at the way how things were then in contrast to now. The cast features an ensemble cast of cultural icons of the 1980's and other prefamed stars who continued the path of filmography over the next few years and so. Lukas Haas was just excellent as Daneil, the kid who first discovers the ball of energy and James LeGros is entertaining as the head-strong Metron. Though it's nowhere near the "Star Wars" franchaise, it still holds strong as a fun little sci-fi film, with 90 minutes of entertainment and campiness to hold ones interest for a long time to come. This is one film, I'm surely you'll enjoy.
I remember when I first saw this film, I must have been about six yearsold (1990 or so), I thought this film was amazing at that time. I'vesince watched it several times as an adult and all I can do is laugh atevery serious scene in this movie. This film is about a future in whichroller skates apparently make a huge come back. All of the worlds water(or most of it anyway) is being stored in a building about the size ofYankee stadium. There is no rain because apparently there is also nosuch thing as evaporation (although plenty of the cast are sweatingthroughout the film). All animals except a few birds and a couple ofattack dogs are dead (or hiding really well ^_^). All plant life isdead and gone which means two things, No salad, and oxygen must besupplied by planet Druidia! My favorite scene in the whole movie iswhen "Rabbit" dare I say the only back person left alive on the planet, does a very non-offensive Harlem Globe Trotters routine with the"Sphere of Longiness". You will enjoy this movie if you want somechuckles, please watch it and, "Enjoy a decent life grid!" (That linecracks me up!)
The premise has seen better days, and lots of them. It's a post-apocalyptic world, a Mad Maxian place that trades in water rather than fuel, with a giant evil corporation thrown in for fun. The major dramatice tension comes from two teen gangs, one (the bad guys) associated with EvilCorp. And, when not pressed into near-slavery, they seem to get around on roller skates with headlights. Why there are skatable roads back and forth across the desert, so conveniently paved, cleared, and maintained, is beyond me, but there it is. Including that one straight into the secret domain of the goodguy Eco-whoozis. Oh, and the evil scientist - can't forget the evil scientist.Utterly forgettable. In fact, you could save yourself the effort of having to forget it by simply missing it in the first place. I should have.-- wiredweird
This one seems to be everyones pet hate for some reason, but it reallydoesn't deserve all that bad press. It is a more than decent sci-fi movieinRoad Warrior territory. The rulers use water shortage to upress the massesbut the magic ball Bodai and The Solarbabies on rollerskates take up thefight. Nice work by Lucas Haas and the beautiful Jamie Gertz, a highlyunderrated actress. High budget insures high productionvalues, this filmboth look and sounds good. 7/10
This movie was a lot of things. It was funny (not funny haha, but funny that's retarded), it was silly, and it was amusing. One of the things, however, it was not, was good. My personal favorite part was when the children were break dancing with the glowing orb. Now this is a movie with substance. To begin the tale to which this movie is about, is to well, dig deep into one's imagination. (Or a psycho's.) You see there is this orpanage with these kids and they live during the future when there is no water on the surface of the planet. However, I'm not really sure of all the facts because my brain tends to weed out the useless info. Anyways, they find an orb, dance with it and try to escape for some reason. (Again, info has vanished....) Anyways, they run into and indian tribe, small cities, some people that live underground, etc. What I'm trying to say, is that this is definately a B movie. So unless you want to watch a bad movie with friends to laugh at, don't bother. Lesson learned from Solarbabies: If you find a glowing orb, be nice to it. It could help you save the world and teach you to break dance.
Okay. First of all, you have to understand that this is an 80's flick. If you watched (and enjoyed) this movie growing up in the 80's, then it will bring you back. Maybe i'm just a die-hard fan of post-apocolyptic-ish 80's movies, but this one is definatley fun. This movie needs to be released on DVD. Its up there with movies such as The Last Starfighter, The Lost Boys, Gremlins, and other great (semi-cheezy) 80's movies. If you like any of these movies, then Solarbabies is definatley a must see. But its mostly for people who saw it in the 80's and who still love 80's stuff (transformers, pop-culture, various other nostalgic items).I love this movie, and i recommend for anyone who saw it and liked it growing up, to find a copy and have an enjoying movie night watching it again.
How does someone actually sit down and write this? It was as going tobe used as a torture device at Gitmo, but the CIA didn't want toviolate the Geneva Convention on treatment of POW's. You would thinkCharles Durning would have enough sense to say "No thank you, I justate". Why does every movie or TV show in the future have to involve amodern day sport getting screwed over? For goodness sake, find afreaking' football and toss it around. For a place with not a lot ofwater they sure make an effort to exert as much as possible. If I knewthere was a lack of water, the most you would get out of me is scoringbehind the building with a local girl.
First of all I was a kid in the 80's and love everything about the 80's. I am now 25 and still love everything and anything having t do with 80's. Now, with that being said...I love this movie. To this day I love this movie. As well as The Lost Boys, Gremlins, Space Camp, Ice Pirates, etc. If you love 80's movies and the music you will enjoy this movie. Im so glad to have found it again and recommend it to anyone.
What a surprising little film I'd never heard of. With a cast thatincludes Ug from the Critters series, the pretty boy of Lost Boys andhis girl from Lost Boys, Mikie from Phantasm 2, a young Nathan Petrelifrom Heroes, Damador from Dungeons & Dragons, the king from PrincessBride, Pappy from O Brother, etc, etc... just a cast of faces Irecognized from very specific roles usually and could place most ofthem. On top of that, the film has everything you could want from afilm like this. 80s rollerskating action showing just how coolrollerskating is in the way only 80s rollerskating movies can, postapocalyptic world, killer robot who delights in torture, a glowing ballwith unlimited power, etc, etc... I mean, wow. This is a fun packagedeserving to have cult status, and one I wish I'd seen a lot sooner!

As someone who has not seen this movie when it was first released, I can't say it gave me a nostalgic feeling when I saw it now. But, I can say that the movie has that innocent feel to it as do many movies in the past have. The technology and special effects may be outdated, but the sentiment of the movie remains. What we take for granted now (e.g. freedom, water, ecosystem, etc..) may one day cease to exist unless we learn to coexist peacefuly.
OK, it is definitely dated looking, but so is Real Genius, which is myall time favorite. It's not like it's Howard The Duck or something! Ilove cheesy 80's movies, and this is one for which I am waiting withbaited breath to be released on DVD. I mean, look at Tron, totalcheese, great movie! Classics are sometimes classics because of their nostalgic value andwhat they offered at the time. This movie features some of the 80'sbiggest stars, not to mention a few who have continued with successfulTV shows and film. Lukas Haas is so pickin' cute, and James LeGros isterrific as the bratty Metron.Honestly, if someone saw Star Wars for the very first time nowadays, they would roll their eyes and walk out. Watch this with an open mind, and you'll enjoy it!
This review is from: Solarbabies (DVD) I admit I only learned about this movie looking for movies with Jason Patric and Jamie Gertz because I loved them in Lost Boys. And I must say I was happy to stumble upon this little diamond in the rough. Where it might not be the best Teen Sci-fi there was back then and might not have the best special effects, it was a great watch and a great story. Unique, something Hollywood doesn't seem to be spitting out much of these days haha!
