Turkish and his close friendaccomplice Tommy get pulled into the world of match fixing by the notorious Brick Top. Things get complicated when the boxer they had lined up gets the shit kicked out of him by Pitt, a pikey ( slang for an Irish Gypsy)- who comes into the equation after Turkish, an unlicensed boxing promoter wants to buy a caravan off the Irish Gypsies. They then try to convince Pitt not only to fight for them, but to lose for them too. Whilst all this is going on, a huge diamond heist takes place, and a fistful of motley characters enter the story, including Cousin Avi, Boris The Blade, Franky Four Fingers and Bullet Tooth Tony. Things go from bad to worse as it all becomes about the money, the guns, and the damned dog!
Franky Four Fingers is a jewel thief who is sent to retrieve a priceydiamond. However, instead of pulling off a relatively simple heist, he setsoff a chain reaction of crazy events that involves Irish gypsies, assassins, stupid robbers and a stray dog that squeaks. An appealing cast delivers the humor and the action in this British film byGuy Ritchie. As appealing as the cast is, and as good as the twists are, they're inside of a story that gets more confusing as it unfolds. I had towatch this film perhaps 3 times before I finally remembered who works forwho, why they do what they do, and how they're associated with thediamond.Still, this jolly good film is worth any time of the Gangster fan. worth theviewing for Pitt's amusing performance alone.** 1/2 out of ****
Once in a while you encounter a movie which rings no bells and rises noexpectations. You just sit and watch it hoping it won't suck. Snatch,to me, was one of those movies and BOY have I enjoyed it. Sure ... it'sviolent but I like that sometimes. This movie has an excellent plot, trend setting camera-work andediting, a multitude of brilliant actors doing even better acting, several compelling stories asynchronously intertwining and above all... large chunks of well placed humor. The only thing that lacks inthis movie (thank God) is romance. The characters in the movie are very believable caricatures of peoplethat, all in their own way, live life avoiding the law. In Snatch thesecharacters (with hilarious nick names) get to develop fully since thelaw doesn't show itself until the very last moments of the movie. Untilthat time theft, murder, betrayal, brotherhood, fighting but above allBritish humor roam freely through the story.Brad Pitt does what he does best in this movie and entertains theaudience with a masterpiece of acting. Vinnie Jones establishes himselfas an icon almost equal to Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson) in PulpFiction. Jason Statham does his most enjoyable acting ever. I couldrave on about this movie but if you haven't seen it and you really likean action-packed knockout from the unexpected corner; watch this one!
I haven't seen Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, which makes this thefirst Guy Ritchie film I've seen, and the only one I've seen so far. I hadheard plenty of good things about this film, and I do believe that I've seensome of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels(though that didn't impress memuch, actually), and after seeing some advertisements for this, I waslooking forward to seeing it. I must say, it did meet my expectations, though it didn't exceed them. The plot is great, very interesting andconstantly developing. It also has a good pace, you're never bored, whichcan also be attributed to the many quick cuts and great editing. The actingis great, I really enjoyed Brad Pitt and Vinnie Jones, not to mention JasonStatham, though they were all great, I think. The characters were diverse,well-written and credible, not to mention quite entertaining, though attimes they became a little lame, in obvious attempts at humor. The action isgreat, though there is fairly little of it; it's mostly sacrificed for thesake of more humor. Don't get me wrong, the humor is mostly good too, butsometimes it just seems like there is too little action in it, though, whenthere is action, it's good. The camera work and overall filming style is,well, stylish, and looks very cool. I liked the use of slow-motion,fast-motion and instantly changing angles, not to mention the well-placedquick cuts. The way the diamond constantly changed hands in the film wasgreat, though a fairly basic way to keep the plot going. I liked all of thethings that didn't have anything to do with the diamond, like the gypsiesand the boxing, but I did think the plot revolved a little too much aroundthe diamond. All in all, a very entertaining film, that couldn't have beenmuch better or much more professionally made, but was lacking a little. Irecommend it to fans of British/violent humor, and fans of the actors. Iguess people who liked Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels will enjoy thistoo, though I can't say for sure, as I haven't seen it.8/10
I saw Guy Ritchie's "Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" and thought itwas an extremely disappointing piece of '90s cinema - I specify it wasmade in the 1990s because it's another one of those Quentin Tarantinorip-offs that borrow his directorial trademarks - the violencepunctuated by irony and dark humor, the intertwining stories, themorally dark characters who have no remorse."Snatch" is a great deal better. Some people claim it's Guy Ritchieselling out to the American market because it stars Brad Pitt, BenicioDel Toro and Dennis Farina. If he's "selling out," he's buyingsomething better with the money - this is a lot more fun to watch than"Two Smoking Barrels." Simply put, it's directed much better. I feltlike "Barrels" was a British TV commercial extended to full length -all style over substance. "Snatch" has similar style but there's moresubstance. As for the performances... everyone is great. Del Toro opens the moviewith a bank robbery - he steals a precious diamond and tries to sellit. This moves on to Jason Statham, as a boxing promoter, and his storyties into the previous one. This goes on and on and invites newcharacters into the mix.The standout is of course Brad Pitt. When I lived in England we hadPikeys living around us and they annoyed the hell out of me. They wereconstantly speeding down our road and stealing stuff. Once they smashedtheir van through a neighbor's fence, then fled the scene of theaccident - as if the police wouldn't figure out who it was.Watching "Snatch" I was reminded of this and thought it wasparticularly memorable because I've never seen a "Pikey" in a moviebefore. Brad Pitt basically mumbles his way through the movie and heand his pack really do come across as genuine Pikeys.I hate to sound like a typical American when I say "Snatch" is betterthan "Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels," but I honestly think the plot, the direction and the acting is superior here. Statham is still greatand Pitt is surprisingly effective in his role. The movie is lively andfun to watch, cleverly scripted with good dialogue and although somescenes are reminiscent of Tarantino, the overall product is far betterthan anything else Ritchie has done - and provides more originalitythan his other movies, too.
While its not as good as LSATSB, it comes close. I love crime films and GuyRitchie is England's Quentin Tarantino. His use of British gangsters andguns will be loved by those who saw the funny humor in Pulp Fiction. Thefilm gets going fast with the heist of a huge diamond that passes throughseveral hands during a series of complicated schemes involving bare-knuckleboxing, Irish gypsies, pawnshop owners, an overweight getaway driver, anasty criminal kingpin who disposes of unwanted bodies by feeding them tohis pet pigs, and a dog who likes to swallow things. If you likedTarantino's first two films and LSATSB, Snatch is a must see.9/10
I've seen this movie three times now, and personally, it delivers. Iwouldn't pick it out of a lineup to watch on a rainy day, but it certainlyis a decent film. Guy Ritchie has a special flare for the British goon styleof characters in his films. Statham is the real star, even though Brad Bittis notable as a gypsy boxer with a knockout right hook. I'd recommend thismovie to those who liked Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, because, infeel, it's almost the same movie.
This movie was tremendous. It immediately attacks the senses with apulsingsoundtrack and amazing camerawork from beginning to end. Brad Pitt givesaperformance that is both hilarious and rousing as pikey boxer Mickey.Benicio Del Toro's character, Franky Four Fingers, doesn't get the cameratime he deserves, but definately steals every scene he's in. Go see thismovie now!
Snatch is a good film, I liked it. But whilst watching it you can't help butfeel that you're seeing an alternate version of Lock Stock and Two SmokingBarrels. Vinnie is playing the same character. The plot is based around abunch of people trying to obtain something for an gangster boss in exchangefor their lives. Similar sorts of comic situations. Etc.I personally felt that the "original" was funnier, better directed, and witha better balance of characters. Although Snatch is a good film, I would haveenjoyed it more if I hadn't spent much of it feeling I'd seen it all before.
The simple concept of underworlders all chasing after a diamond is turnedbyRitchie into a brilliant vortex of coincidence, violence and black humour. The paths of the factions has been excellently contrived, and its nice tosee that it doesn't take itself seriously. If you don't either, then it's atop notch way to kill a few hours.
This is an cracking, fantastic, outstanding movie, with not onlygun-fights,drugs-deals and a interesting and fascinating story,it also hasgood humor and classy actors, with magnificent acting.Brad Pitt,as always he's totally into his role, and plays the person like itwas really him,the accent.Vinnie Jones, really cool, brilliantacting. This is a MUST,you must see it,really the acting amazed me and i this isoneof the best movies I've ever seen!!!!!!!
This is definitely my favorite movie. For me, it surpasses even theGodfather in greatness. Its basically about a stolen diamond, and thetwistsand turns it takes through several very entertaining characters. I haveseenthis film probably 30 times, I can quote everything before its said, yetitstill makes me laugh. The British humor in it is very funny. I also reallylike the music. If you havent seen this movie, you should.
Guy Ritchie has directed a stylish and engaging thriller the likes ofwhichI have not seen in many years (I kept having feelings not experiencedsince"Pulp Fiction" and perhaps even 1985's "No Surrender" - but that was alongtime ago and an altogether very different film). I enjoy good thrillersandthis one is top-notch. Yes, there is a lot of violence - includingunlicensed, bare-knuckle boxing - but the omnipresent humour lets theaudience accept the violence as the context within which stories like thishappen. It's hard to wince when a dog in the background is squeakingbecause of a squeaky toy it had swallowed whole earlier in the film. Nottremendously clever but it works very well in this movie. The acting? Top drawer stuff. Jason Statham's "Turkish" is excellent andeven Brad Pitt's performance is very good. Alan Ford's "Brick Top" isabsolutely wonderfully delivered - this character is positively scary -andDennis Farina ("Cousin Avi") is quite good as well. Sure, none of therolescalled for much emotional range but there were no embarrassing accents orout-of-character moments which destroy lesser outings. The entire castmerits high marks - as much for supplying the comic relief as for ensuringthat no part of this movie dragged. The story? It's actually an amalgam of several stories where the weavingisat such a breakneck speed that you have to keep on top of the cast ofcharacters or you run the risk of losing the thread altogether. Thestylishintroduction of all the main characters at the beginning of the movieturnsout to be not only style but substance. While the story starts out as a standard heist plot, it departs from itveryquickly as one group after another is brought into contact with - andpossession of - the stolen gem. The interesting thing is that story endsupbeing as much about "One Punch" Mickey O'Neil (Brad Pitt), an Irish gypsy(called "Pikey's" apparently) as it is about this giant diamond. The realinterest in this story comes from the connections between the quest forthisdiamond and the story about Mickey O'Neill's abbreviated boxingcareer. If you can keep up with its pace, "Snatch" is an excellent thriller to gosee and will certainly be first class video rental fodder in the future.Congratulations to Guy Ritchie - I'll be renting his earlier outing,"Lock,Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" sometime soon. For the time being, I givethis one a 9.
Britain's current infatuation with vicious, throat-cutting gangster culturecontinues with this piece of exploitation which is neither as funny nor ascharming as it would like you to think it is.Guy Ritchie, a semi-aristocrat with pretensions to working class chic, attempts to sustain the myth that all gangsters are just loveable roguesrather than the sadistic sociopaths that they really are. Sure, violent menhave their reasons to be violent and many fine films have been made whichhave sensibly explored the theme of male violence. Snatch is not one ofthese. The day when an audience is expected to derive amusement from the exploitsof psychopaths and enjoy a 'good laugh' along with them as they dish outtheir un-metered brutality is a day when... hang on a minute! That day seemsto have come. I hope we all have enough sanity not to laugh.
At the very centre of Snatch is an 80+ carat diamond, but there is ahell of a lot moving around in its orbit. The story starts with the diamond heist by a crew headed by FrankieFour Fingers (Benicio Del Toro), in a clever sequence that follows Âvia security monitor screens  the would be thieves as they movethrough the building. The plot then largely builds towards an unlicensed (read "rigged")boxing match, with the purchase of a caravan at one point introducingnew characters and providing new twists and turns. But almost everyone knows of, and wants, the huge diamond.Snatch features dozens of colourful characters from the underbelly ofsociety, thugs, henchmen, conmen, promoters , thieves, hit men, heaviesand just plain criminals. They sport names like "Bullet-Tooth","Turkish" and "Brick Top", and seem to value all human life aside fromtheir own lightly. After a series of coincidences and unfortunate timing Turkish (JasonStatham) finds himself involved in finding a suitable replacement foran injured fighter for shonky promoter Brick Top's next event.Brick Top is a legitimately hard b*stard, scared of no-one and capableof anything, he is blunt, brutal and vicious. His favoured method ofdisposing of his victims is chopping them up and feeding them to hungrypigs.Turkish on the other hand is merely after a quick buck, and rather thandisappoint Brick Top and find himself pig food he seeks out a gypsyhard man named Mickey (Brad Pitt) with whom the aforementioned caravandeal was brokered (unsuccessfully) by his gormless associate.Mickey is skinny and looks outmatched by can take a lot more than onepunch, and is a bare knuckle boxing expert. Also being a gypsy we arelead to believe that he and his crew should probably not be trusted inany situation. The plot is quite circular and has far more characters than I havedescribed, with the action moving around as things develop and as theyinteract. As always with Guy Ritchie films the soundtrack is uniformlyexcellent, with the instrumental tracks being exceptionally funky inthis case.Having so many characters means that it is impossible to playfavourites, and over the course of the film many of them indeed getpicked off, especially near the conclusion as everyone nears in on thediamond which goes through more hands than a bottle of Courvoisier at ahip-hop album release party (I was going to say Justin Bieber at apedophile conference but got cold feet). The film has a high body count but aside from the boxing sequences mostof the violence is confined to the offscreen kind, in fact some of thedescriptions and dialogue are far more cringe-inducing than anythingyou'll actually witness.Speaking of dialogue, while the plot of Snatch is probably a step belowthat of Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels the dialogue is perhaps morerich and definitely funnier this time around. Ritchie might benefitfrom picking a group of characters from Snatch and Lock, Stock, thenjust making film after film with them all interacting. He couldintroduce new characters and subplots along the way, and could savehimself from making increasingly samey films with basically the samecharacters, just with different names.Lock Stock was great, Snatch very good, but everything he has donesince is average at best and often a lot worse.Snatch works because at the time Ritchie had yet to exhaust what agroup of nefarious underworld characters could get up to while swearingfrequently and killing each other. Name actors agreed to appear inthese new and exciting genre films because no-one else was doing it. Inthe years that followed though everyone jumped on the bandwagon andcreated their own bastardised rip-offs.On top of all this and perhaps most unfortunate of all for Guy Ritchie,he had already taken his limited fame and used it to marry Madonna, thus tarnishing him in the eyes of the sensible even more.He still gets to boast of two excellent films though, it is just ashame that he didn't get to make many more.Final Rating  8 / 10. It's quite Lock, Stock-esque, but that doesn'tmake it any less entertaining. A complex web of characters, cleverdialogue and well choreographed events.
A complex caper-type story about a bunch of none-too-bright crooks chasing after a walnut-sized diamond.
This film is a very visual form of every great O. Henry story. While notquite as well put together as "Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels," thisfilm has got it where it counts and rolls very well onto the screen as acelebration of the unexpected and how coincidence and mishaps affect us all, even the makers of the best plans. A fun, fast film, not quite the sameenjoyment level as the Guy Ritchie's film which proceeded it (Lock,Stock...) but better than most of what airs in the U.S.A. Ritchie provesthat he is most decidely the fresh blood american box offices need, alongwith Troy Duffy, whose excellent work, Boondock Saints, should be viewedwith Ritchie's films as a new approach to Noir. The entire cast make the film fun, and it is great to see Vinnie Jonesreturn as a merciless hitman. A great cast, some fun turns, and an all outjoy to watch. Can we get some of this stateside, moviemakers, other than theexcellent aforementioned Duffy?
I was never really too keen on "Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels". Allmy friends constantly quoted it, raved and ranted, and then when "Snatch"came out, everyone made an even bigger deal of that. I watched Lock Stock, and though I did like it, it didn't really tickle my fancy. But Snatch, that's a completely different story all together. When I saw Snatch at the cinemas, I was shocked to see a couple leave onlyfifteen minutes into the film. As they left, you could hear theirintellectually deficient comments; "this movie is so boring". I couldn'tbelieve it! I'd recommend this movie to ANYONE, The Popeeven! There are hundreds of thousands of reasons for anyone to see this movie;each word of the script being a reason.Snatch is possibly one of THE best written movies I've seen. It's smart, witty, funny and has just the right touches of dark humour. With characterslike Turkish, Mickey, Tommy, Brick Top, Bullet Tooth Tony and Cousin Avi;their witty repartee will have your personal quotes list full for monthsafter watching it. The camera work and editing complement each other tokeep the film's pace on its toes, much like the boxers at the center of thecharacter's stories.Jason Statham has some of THE best lines in the movie, constantly slamminganything even slightly intelligent his partner Tommy has to say. Brad Pittturns out an excellent performance as the Irish-Gypsy-Pykie Mickey; hisaccent is hilarious. Even though the story line is only a simple one (following a massive Diamondthrough England's criminal underworld), it is the connections each characterhas to the diamond and each other that really makes this film stand out fromall the usual jewel-heist films.Another 10 / 10 from me on this one, it's just a pity the follow up toSnatch was a "collaborative effort" from Mr. Richie and hisum.......wife.
Wow what a film from the off statham and pitt play there parts toperfectionthe storyline amazingly thought out!! A must see for all gangster tpe filmlovers!!! Oh and not forgetting are very own frank butcher!! I would ratethis highly on the same level as Lock stock by far the best film I haveseento date!
Some people, including critics, have cited this as merely a clone of "Lock,Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels", writer/director Guy Ritchie's previousknockout. I don't feel this is true at all but I can see we're they'recoming from. There are many similarities between "Snatch" and "Lock, Stock,..." (bizarre character names, insane pacing, British criminal underworld)but I feel it is unfair to simply dismiss "Snatch" as a clone, rather thanacknowledging it for the improvement it is. Quentin Tarantino wasn't knockedby critics when he made a similar movie to "Reservoir Dogs" with "PulpFiction". Both are violent, both involve criminals, and both are filled withprofanity. But, Tarantino took what he did in "Reservoir Dogs" and upped theante with "Pulp Fiction". Ritchie has done a similar feat with "Snatch".Although I hate to compare Ritchie to Tarantino, because I feel they aregreatly different in their approaches to the crime genre (and personally, Ilike Ritchie better). And plus, as Ritchie has stated, the Britishunderworld is rather large and there are many stories to be told and this isanother. "Snatch", though, is actually more interesting then "Lock, Stock,..." with it's better characters, writing, acting, and casting. Now, don'tget me wrong, all of those were great in "Lock, Stock, ...", I just feelthey are better in "Snatch". Speaking of casting, it is inspired here.Benicio Del Toro proves once again that he is one of the hardest workingactors today (this is what, his 5th movie in 2 years?). Dennis Farina giveshis best performance since "Get Shorty". His Cousin Avi is hilarious and thescene where he tries to shoot the dog (and ends up doing worse) ispriceless. Brad Pitt shines and is at his very best as One Punch MickeyO'Neil, the fairly unintelligible Gipsy boxer. Next up on the roster isVinnie Jones, who once again is a total bad ass as Bullet Tooth Tony(although this is the character that seems most recycled). He more thanmakes up for his appearance in "Gone in 60 Seconds". The rest of the cast issuperb as well, but to name them all would take a while. So, I'll end itwith this. "Snatch" is an excellent step up the cinematic ladder forRitchie. If he continues to climb, he'll be an oscar winner in no time. Seeit, and then see it again to make sure you caught everything.
Snatch has a convoluted and preposterous plot. It's also full of dreadfulLondon gangster stereotypes. But this isn't going to be a negative review. In fact, Snatch is a hugely enjoyable film. It's very dynamic, and a markedimprovement on Ritchie's previous Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, which certainly had its moments too. Snatch is full of memorable lines andgreat humor. The editing and direction keeps the film moving at a crackingpace, and there's always something happening so it never drags. It possessesa great soundtrack, and excellent performances from an eclectic selection ofcolorful characters: Alan Ford's 'Brick Top' has to be one of the mostdespicable yet highly amusing gangster characters ever to grace the silverscreen. Worth noting too is the excellent presentation and content of theRegion 1 DVD release. Just remember to beware of 'ze Germans', and don'texpect too much substance, but enjoy the style and great escapism thatSnatch offers.
