We have taken some photos of "Smallville - Season Ten". They represent actual movie quality.
The truth about "Smallville" is that it's this generation's "Hercules"and/or "Xena", but with the backstage intrigues of "Game of Thrones".The show follows the life of Clark Kent, better know, to at least halfof this planet, as "Superman", and everyone around him.The first season is filled to the brim with cliché adventures thatClark and 'those meddling kids'(Cloe - the high school journalist andPete - Clark's best friend) find a way to fix, each one of these being,of course, tied closely to the meteor shower. Kripton, Clark Kent'splace of birth exploded years ago and his parents placed him in a shipand send him all the way to Earth, along with his ship however, therewere pieces of the planet(meteors), that made it through the atmosphereand are now scattered around the town. The show swirls around this keyfactor for at least the first two seasons, the meteors and they'reeffects on people keep Clark and the gang busy for the most part, LanaLang(love interest) making up for the rest. It's played poorly and the term cliff hanger doesn't even begin tocover it, but over all it's probably a fun show for teenagers. Yes, itcould use better writing and a faster pace, it could use a lot ofthings including a change of tone(because for the most part the showgives one the impression that it's talking down to you), however ifyou've got time to kill and above all you're in your early teens, giveit a go, especially if you're a comic book fan or a fan of Superman.
Fans of Smallville should check out the Bruce Willis movie Unbreakable. Thetheme of that film is very close to the heart of what Smallville is about. In Unbreakable, the bad guy kills thousands of people by causing manydisasters because he believes that some people are born with superpowers, but they never know about them because they haven't been tested or been insituations where these superpowers, including invulnerability, would becomeapparent. So he kills people by causing explosions and accidents just to seeif anyone survives. Eventually someone does. the Bruce Willis character,David Dunn. The bad guy, known as Mr. Glass (but only by himself),eventually tells Dunn his theory that super-heroes and super-villains are apart of the natural order of things and that it takes conflict with asuper-villain to establish and evolve the super-hero's true nature. The yinand yang of the extremes of good and evil, strong and weak. Mr Glass feltfor his life to have some purpose, because he has a condition that makes hisbones very fragile and easy to break, he needs to find his opposite, someonewith unbreakable bones. By making Dunn aware of his abilities (super strength, invulnerability, psiabilities) Mr. Glass starts Dunn on the path to using these abilities toprotect the innocent and punish evildoers. I believe this is what is goingon in Smallville. What makes superman superman? Why does he protect theinnocent and act as a force of good and not evil? Smallville is trying toshow that. Clark Kent is becoming aware that he IS an alien. He will NEVERbe just one of the guys, he will NEVER have a wife and kids, and to revealhis secret to someone is to put them in terrible danger.Clark's adoptive parents have done their best to give Clark good values anda strong sense of responsibility about his powers. They know he could killsomeone with the flick of a finger, and he's getting more powerful everyday. It will be his relationship with Lex that fully triggers the Supermanidentity. Where he becomes an independant entity who doesn't waste much timeon trying to make people like him. I see Clark, Lex, and Lionel as the threeelements that will combine to create Superman, and the criminally insanegenius known as Lex Luthor. As for Lionel, I see him being killed as one ofthe final elements to kick Lex over the edge and Clark into the red cape. Itwill be something involving a feeling of being betrayed by someone Lextrusted. Maybe Lionel will be killed, Lex will think Clark is to blame, dedicates his life to the destruction of Clark, all Clark's friends andfamily, people in the phone book named Clark... Yeah... that would work.Betrayal and revenge. Everything in drama pretty much revolves around thosetwo things. Betrayal. Revenge. Some think this show is about teen angst and Clark always trying to explainhis mysterious actions to Lana and his other friends because he doesn't wantto lose their friendship. It isn't. This show is about Clark learning thathe will never be like them and he has to cut all that teen angst baggageloose. He is learning that he has to stop being so emotionally needy andthat he has a destiny, and that only he can decide what that destiny willbe. And where that path leads, he goes alone. Lana is only a symbol of whatClark has to sacrifice when he chooses the life of a superhero.I think Tom Welling is doing a great job of showing Clark's evolution andmaturation. The real standouts here are the Luthors, though. John Glover andMichael Rosenbaum have created complicated and multi-layered characters thatare totally amoral and loads of fun to watch. Of the two, there could stillbe hope for Lex. He sees in Clark and his family the good things heremembers about his mother, and he envies them that kind of love andaffection and trust. All that will change before this show wraps, and Ican't wait to see how it unfolds.Smallville is without a doubt the most intelligent and well thought outsuperman project I have ever seen.
Last night...Thursday...was a Lakers game. Tonight, Friday, withoutwarning, KTLA in Los Angeles decided to air the Thursday night line up,which means I totally missed the show. What I have found is a lack ofconsistency in airing dates is what ultimately kills good TV serieslike Alias.Smallville is a good series that sticks close to the Superman legend.Unfortunately it is bogged down by reruns every few weeks and nowmisplaced episodes. If the networks want viewer loyalty, maybe theyshould consider those they are trying to achieve loyalty from. I onlywatch three shows consistentlyÂSmallville, Lost and BattlestarGalactica. (I used to watch Gilmore Girls religiously, till Rory becamea sex-starved bitch.) Lost has so many recaps, you'd think it was afootball game. I totally missed the episode where Claire remember all.And Battlestar Galactica airs on Saturdays at 2:00 in the morning. It'sa difficult watch at best.Maybe the WB should take more pride in its shows. If they continue topull what they pulled tonight in L.A. they might find it turns out tobe the krytonite that kills their rating.
Everyone knows who Superman is. His adventures, the villains he'sfaced, & the powers he possess. So, yes, people do know the story ofSuperman, but, do they know the other side of Superman. He is not hisalter ego or a secret identity, he is who Superman really is, ClarkKent. And that is what Smallville is about, the story that was nevertold about how Clark Kent becomes the world's greatest hero. Smallvilleshows how Clark comes to Earth, the people he will meet, the choices hewill make along the way to his path of becoming Superman. Smallvilleshows you a side of the Superman mythology you have not seen. You getto know who Clark is. What he believes in & stands for. You get to knowhis adoptive parents & see how they handle dealing with having a sonwith powers. Meet his friends who see an average farm boy until theyfind out the truth. And the story that was never told, in Smallvilleyou see the friendship of Clark Kent and Lex Luthor, Superman'sgreatest enemy. While secretly saving the lives of Smallville citizensClark tries to live as an average person not knowing who he willbecome. In my opinion Smallville is the best show on TV. Even though I believethat, I do have some serious problems that weaken the show & cause itto become repetitive. I believe that seasons 1 - 4 were the best of all7. After season 4 ( which I felt was the best season of them all ) theshow started to loose some strength in it's seasons, & the logicalreason is the Smallville show had cut backs on their budget over the 5- 7 seasons, & because of that the action & special effects were cutdown which all in all made Clark not use his powers as much. The actioncut down isn't everything. This show is a " villain of the week" kindof show, were there is a new villain doing something that Clark has tostop in the majority of episodes. There are about 22 episodes a seasonand most episodes don't talk about the season plot until the end of theepisode, they focus more on the episodes villain, which takes a whole45 minutes to lead up to the fight between Clark & the villain and thefight only lasts 2 minutes. The season plot gets more addressed as youreach the season finale but having short fights between the villain ofthe week and not addressing the season plot more often trough theseason helps make the show repetitive. But the main thing that hurtsthis show are the Clana fans. These fans are Clark + Lana fans. Theywant Clark & Lana together but Superman ends up with Lois Lane so Clarkcan be with Lana but only for a while. They were but it ended. Untilthe Clana fans boycotted Smallville forcing the writers to put themback together. This process happened over and over through seasons 5 -7. Breaking them up and putting them back together. It became sorepetitive I felt bad that one of my favorite characters in Lana, Istarted to believe needed to leave to let Clark move on. You might findsome little ones along the way for ex: there is a time period were Lexseems to get shot every week, also when someone is in danger they seemto hit their head and become unconscious, this starts to become thequeue that Clark is about to come in and save them. But all in all thetop list of problems are the ones that weaken this show.Though it has it's problems ( every show does ) it has great reason tokeep watching. The characters are amazing. The creators put togetherthe perfect cast. The way they all interact with one another, havingconversations about something that had just happened, or wondering whatthis character might say to the other when they meet after a hugeevent. The characters make this show. You create an emotional bond witheach character. When someone is sad you are sad for them, when they arein danger you fear for the character. That is one great point, certaincharacters such as Clark, Lex, & Lois become in some sort of dangerwere their lives may end. Even thought you may realize they are in theSuperman story later on which means they can't die in Smallville, youare still afraid for them and your adrenaline runs hot. Some seasonplots are very good and one strong thing this show has is it's seasonfinales are always strong & keep you asking questions about everycharacter. There are characters you love & characters you love to hate. And those you don't know when they'll do something you don't expect. All in all Smallville is a powerful, dramatic & exciting show that is amust see.
Smallville took off to a fast start in 2001, and promptly fell on itsface. Not because of the ratings. The WB apparently considers those goodenough to keep the show on. The area that the show lacks in is the actual story. There's a Supermanemblem on the front of the DVDs that the show cannot live up to.Smallville has little to nothing to do with the myth of Superman. Manytimes, it's only the characters' names that connects with the originalstory. For example: Clark Kent, the man that becomes Superman, is a whiny,self-absorbed, drug-taking criminal whose thoughts revolve solelyaround Lana Lang and how sad and sorry his life is because he can'thave her. Almost every other character has undergone a similar assassination, andthey have been written that way for five years. Almost no growth ordevelopment has occurred to anyone. Everyone is still in love with allthe same people. Continuity is thrown out the window week after week. It's insulting.Smallville is a disgrace to anyone who calls themselves a fan ofSuperman. This show doesn't believe a man can fly.
From the moment I heard about this TV Show I had a feeling I would loveit. Finally I got round to buying Seasons 1 Â 6 on DVD and found that Iwas right.Tom Welling portrays a teenage Clarke Kent growing up in Smallville,Kansas. Welling is fantastic as the young Clarke struggling with hisgrowing powers and having to keep them a secret from the people closestto him. As the series unfolds we learn more about Clarke's lineage andhis destiny. We get to watch him take down what the show lovinglyrefers to as "Meteor Freaks" overcome personal obstacles and build afriendship with the man who will eventually become his arch nemesis,Lex Luthor.Welling is surrounded by an amazingly talented cast. Michael Rosenbaumis brilliant as a tortured young Lex, bringing a vulnerable side to hisotherwise arrogant character that will break your heart. Kristin Kreukis beautiful as the kind-hearted Lana Lang, Erica Durance is spunky anddamn hot as feisty Lois Lane and, although her character may irritateyou to the core, Alison Mack is perfectly cast as driven, witty ChloeSullivan. The show is well written and superbly directed. The effects will blowyou away and although the Monster-of-The-Week story lines may becometiresome now and then, the story arcs that are developed from Season 2onwards more than make up for it.In short, whether or not you are a comic book fan this show appeals onmany different levels. Perfectly cast, well written and beautifullyexecuted, this show has it all. Enjoy!
Smallville is a triumphant rethinking of an American classic, thenbetween the boy Clark Kent (Tom Welling / Cheaper by the Dozen) thougthhe was and the man he is destined to become lie the compelling storiesof Smallville, the popular and clever action series that reimagines thesuperman saga from its roots. Some personal favorites include the"Pilot" (this because that's how it all started), "Hourglass" (becauseit gives such a cool insigth into Lex and Clark's future), "Rouge"(because it was a turning point in the stories we could tell), "Nicodemus" (because it's just damn fun), "Tempest" (because it endedthe season on an incredible high), "Vortex" (because is the best openof season), "Calling" (because here starts the figth between Chloe andLana) and "Exodus" (because Chloe turned into a bad girl). Just havefun every time you watch Smallville, because is the best show done.More than others.
Smallville. Good premise, HORRIBLE execution. The problems start with the creative team. Two men who, from the verystart, decided to not respect the source material, and went as far asto admit, they never even bothered to research their MAIN character.Writing a show about Clark Kent's developmental years, withoutbothering to find out what he's supposed to be developing into, is liketrying to back a cake with ice cream and dynamite. No matter how hardyou try, it's just gonna blow up into a big gooey mess.Clark, our "hero", and i use the term lightly, is anything but. When wefirst meet him in season one, he's a wholesome farm boy, with a lovingfamily, and a pretty developed set of morals and responsibilities. Somechanges were made to his arrival on Earth, which were fine, until wefind they lead this Clark into feeling he's responsible for killinghalf of Smallville off in the '89 meteor shower that brought him herefrom Krypton. Within two years however, he regresses to the point ofbecoming addicted to red k, or "kryptonian crack cocaine" if you will.It causes him to rob banks, and not care about anything. The addictioncomes with his attempt to remove it, and then immediate action ofputting it back on, rather than face life. Now, I'm not sure where everyone else grew up, but robbing banks, anddoing drugs weren't signs of over developed morality, and ahyper-concern for others where i lived. I don't see how theseexperiences inspire hope that Clark will overcome all obstacles, and bea steadfast beacon of truth and justice in a scant decade. Also there is the fetishization of Lana Lang, who hither to, was afairly unimportant character in Superman mythology. I say was, becauseapparently, she is now solely responsible for Clark becoming the Man ofSteel. Not mention everyone in the universe loves, man and woman alike. But the problems don't just stay in the realms of characterization. Theplot development, or lack thereof is completely evident, as well as thedropping of interesting, and fan supported plot lines, into the dustbinof history. Witches, magic stones, and Kryptonite made freaks, areapparently what spurred Clark to become the greatest hero ever. Mindyou, this is supposed to be the "realistic" and "modernized" version ofhow he came to be. So you'll have to forgive me for choosing somethinglike the Reeve movies, or Lois and Clark, where Ma and Pa were moralwithout being preachy, Clark was a GOOD GUY, and truth justice and theAmerican way applied to Clark, as well as Superman.
I LOVE SMALLVILLE! I love how it looks at Clark growing up as a teen. TomWelling is hot and fits the roll wonderfully. I look forward to every epbecause it is a show that I can sit back and enjoy. It has a great youngcast and some legends to back it up like Annette and John( whom I loved inthe Dukes of Hazzard). Smallville has everything, action, comedy, greatstories etc. I hope it runs for a long time.
I won't say anything about individual plots, this is just the strengthof the shows as a whole. In the beginning (the first 2 seasons) thecharacters were multi-layered, seemingly actual people that you couldempathize with. It was interesting to see the chemistry work outbetween everyone. The writing was good and no episode (that I couldsee) took anything away from another. This congrats goes to both Plotwriting and dialog. I hated missing even one of these episodes. Myinterest dropped off at season 2's last episode.I continued watching season 3 just to see what would happen. Phoenixand Relic were really good episodes, but most of them made no sense. The show started seeming like a periodical: no real cohesion betweenthe episodes. The only problem with that is that very few smallvilleepisodes can stand on their own; there should be some connection. Ididn't watch the last half of this season because it did not seem to bereal smallville. It seemed as if they were using the name to drawpeople into a melodrama or something. what I saw Seasons four and fiveseemed almost like a soap opera or something. They lost their focus onvalues and their perspective or angle that had made the first 2 and onehalf seasons good to watch as well as worth watching. What the heck isthe phantom zone doing in smallville? Is there no originality anymore? I can't give and over all rating, just watch it till 3x06.
This is one of my favorite shows, but I am disappionted that they decided to put two inferior on the DVD. This show stars the always amazing looking Tom Welling as Clark Kent, Kristen Kruek as the sappy Lana Lang, Micheal Rosenbaulm as the furture nemasis Lex Luthor, and Allison Mack as the Lois Lane parralel Chloe Sullivan. In the first episode they put on the DVD, Pilot, it goes through all the basics, how the Kents found Clark, the meteor shower affecting everyone in Smallville (one of the things that did not happen in the comic book, but after you see the better episodes you forgive the wroters for putting in), Clark's crush on the pretty but oh so annoying girl-next-door with the jelous boyfriend played by Eric Johnson(she gets less annoying in later episodes),Clark saving Lex's life and consequently becoming his best friend(a courageous but greatmove by the writers)and of course the X-Files like villian trying to kill people in Smallville. The chram of the epsiodes make you forget all the glaring faults, except for Lana, about Smallville. The second episode a bug guy attacks Smallville. Frankly, Iwas very uoset when I lerned that they were putting these two episodes on the DVD because besides for Reaper and Drone these are the two worst episodes although the premeire provides information thet you need to understand the future episodes. If you can possibly see other episodes I highly recommend it, but as for these two don't waste your money.
I have been watching Smallville since it hit the airways a year ago. I hadmy skepticism when I first heard about the show, but my interest in "comiccharacters" had me give this series a chance. It was a slow start, but allthe "history" I had once heard about "Superman" was unfolding before myeyes. I realize this is one of those "teen dramas," but I still think it'sworth seeing. This is a focus on the teenage life of Clark Kent. I feelthey do it in a simple and interesting way. I finally decided to add my two cents in about this show when I notice thefirst comment. Which ironically was just written back in July? This personobviously has no liken for "American Television." So I don't think they arethe best person to inform people of the show. They do not feel it is anoriginal show. This is based upon a character that has been around for over50years. So how original do you want it to be? I feel it does a good jobat talking about Smallville and making an explanation for how things happen. We get to see Clark dealing with friends and family as he changes more andmore to the "Superman" we know. I was a little put off that Clark was friends with Lex Luther who becomesone of his greatest foes. Although as time went by and shows went by Ibecame interested in the whole idea that they were friends at one time. Iwas much more of a "Marvel" fan growing up, but I did have my share ofinterest in the "Man of Steel." I really don't think they focussed thishighly on Clark growing up. They usually started with the whole Kryptoncoming apart and the parents putting him on his craft. Then he comes toearth and is found, by the Kents. So I really don't know how much of theirstorylines are based on real superman history or if its just artisticfreedom. Either way it is enough for some enjoyment.I think if you take this series for what it is, then you will enjoy it. Itis a Sci-fi teen drama based upon a story thats been around and growing forover 50 years. So don't be too annul when judging it. lol. I think in thatcase you will enjoy this show. I look forward to seeing what others foesClark faces, who else finds out his secret, and to see him get closer andcloser to being called, "Superman."
It is a teenage story of a boy who turns out to be the biggest (and theonly one) superhero and save a lot of lives in American history. Hestruggles to become a good man, and try to use his powers in the nameof goodness. But his origin gives him headaches in his puberty. Badnews always turn out to resolve in a good fashioned way when he'saround. He's also the most naive guy. This makes people wish that everypowerful guy is a naive one and rescues people who are in need of help.perhaps every society needs a "superman" and a "real" story of asuperman for its liberation. I loved this show. However, they made ittoo long. Enough of the celebration of the unusual life.. they mustfinish it before it gives people headache.
I'm just looking foward to a reunion in 10 years with Michael Rosenbaumplaying the evil Lex Luthor, wearing that pink shirt that Luthor wears inthe Superfriends, with Tom Welling playing mild-mannered Clark Kent insteadof Clark Kent the hero.
I have been a fan of "Smallville" from the beginning, and was veryhappy both as a viewer and a fan at how this season turned out. Indirect opposition to season four's disastrous story arch involvingIsobel and the Teague family attempting to manipulate Lana, this onetakes a much more serious (and yet enjoyable) path through Clark'schoices and their ultimate consequences. It also shifts the loveinterest from Clark and Lana to Lex and Lana, something they have beenhinting at four seasons and only now have the courage to bring out.Lex Luthor and Jonathan Kent do battle to become state senator, LionelLuthor switches sides (again), Clark consummates his love for Lana andthen is forced to give her up, Chloe starts working for the DailyPlanet, one of the leading cast members is killed off, and it winds upin the most explosive, dramatic, and powerful season finale of theseries. It's rare that I have enjoyed almost every episode in a season, butthere is some solid stuff here -- "Lexmas" is a heart-ripping "what if"featuring Lex's alternate life if he is to choose the path of good, with a sadistic twist in the second half to make Stephen King take astep back; "Tomb" is a fantastically fun ghost story in which AllisonMack plays an alternate Chloe; "Reckoning" brings two consecutivedeaths and a painful funereal; "Mercy" revolves around the charismabetween Martha and Lionel when a manic madman forces them to make theirway through his house of horrors; and five or so episodes revolvearound the steadily building seduction of Lana Lang. Tom Welling alsomakes his directorial debut (and a marvelous one at that) in "Fragile,"an ironic twist of fate since it contains a super-hot first kissbetween Lana and Lex at the end.I am a little disappointed that there aren't more features (one wouldhave thought at least "Reckoning" and "Fragile" would get a commentary, and no blooper reel is unfortunate, since many of the actors havementioned the various pranks and oops! on set) but will be delighted toown this season. I look forward with great anticipation thepossibilities the next will bring.I still watch season six and its good. Overall this is one of myfavorite shows. My thursdays revolve around this.
Nothing in this life is perfect, though the entire 10 seasons comeabout as close as it is possible. I did not watch this series because Ialways thought Christopher Reeve was THE Superman and Smallville wouldnot live up to his example. Purely by chance I watched a few of thelast season episodes and after watching the finale, I was hooked. I nowown ALL ten seasons and have watched every one! What a series. TomWelling stands tall as the man of steel as he grows from farm boy tohero, his growth was a joy to watch. Sure, some episodes were notexceptional, but they were always watchable and enjoyable. EricaDurance as Lois Lane, marvelous. Allison Mack as Chloe Sullivan, perfect. Justin Hartley as Olive Queen, exceptional. The casting wasterrific. Only one character bothered me, Lana Lang. I felt like shewas kept around too long and I stopped being sure to whom she wasloyal. Besides, everyone knows he and Lois are destined for each otherso after Lois came on the scene, I was ready to loose Lana. I have always found the Superman legend compelling, who of us does notenjoy believing that there could be a super Hero out there to protectus from the Luthors of the world. If you enjoy Superman, I believe you will enjoy Smallville. I lovedwatching Clark Kent, Kansas farm boy, grow into Clark Kent, super hero, not just a powerful being, a being with a code of Honor, belief intruth and justice and the total inability to take a human life. Goodthings by which to live.
Smallville is without a doubt the most refreshing, inspiring, andentertaining TV show in quite a while. The time spent on Clark's arrivalonEarth was just long enough as the bulk of people to watch Smallville willalready understand Superman's origin, while at the same time giving a goodjump on point for those new to the storyline. The effects used are justincredible for a TV show too. Everyone knows that production companies arenow putting more into effects for their TV ventures, look at the effectsused in the most recent seasons of Buffy, Angel, Enterprise, Mutant X. ButSmallville takes that technology and really uses it to it's advantage,Slowing down the action to show the extent of Clark's powers, the finishedproduct is really worthy of any movie blockbuster. The writing iscertainlyamong the best around at the moment, the direction is superb, with somereally beautiful shots being used, and the actors never fail to capturetheir characters every week, I don't think they could have found bettermatches. If there was any show I could work on to learn to write better, and learntodirect, then Smallville would be my choice. Unfortunatly it isn't mychoice,so i'll endure the long road and admire the work being done across thepond.you never know, maybe one day...
Sure, some parts are sort of cheesy, but this show has a lot of merit. TomWelling is great as Clark Kent, he's perfect. I can't imagine him asSuperman though, only Christopher Reeve could ever pull offSuperman. The entire cast is great, although it's a little hard to believe Clark is afreshman. At 6'3, Welling stands way above his friends Pete and Chloe, wholook like 3rd graders compared to him. Still, I doubt Welling will ever takeChristopher Reeve's costume (who stood at 6'4) away fromhim.I think this show has a lot of potential, and I'm anxious to see how theytake this series. Hopefully it won't fall into the same ditch that Lois andClark fell into.
This has got to be one of the most amazing shows on TV. Even thoughit's been running for a few years, I only started watching it justbefore Xmas! (2005) For years I avoided it because I thought it wouldbe "Superman meets Dawson's creek"(which didn't appeal to me at all!!)also Clark/Tom and Lana/Kristin looked so "pretty" it put me off!ha-ha, thinking they were all looks, but no talent, was I Soooowrong!!! My brother kept on telling me for a while how good it was, butI said "yeah, right!" but just before Xmas, I saw the box set goingcheap on ebay, so I thought I'd give it a go. Boy! am I so glad I did!!I've nearly finished watching season 2 and I think this show is sofantastic!! Tom Welling isn't just a pretty face! he's excellent asClark Kent. The producers hit jackpot when they casted him! In fact thewhole cast are brilliant: esp in my opinion, John Schneider as Clark'sDad and John Glover as Lionel Luther (the JR of the 00, some of youwill be too young to know who he is! ha-ha)The stories are fantastic, the writing is brilliant, the special effectare great and the characters are so believable, I'm addicted!! I've gotanother 2 seasons to go in my box set and season 5 has just startedhere in Britain, so I've got a lot to look forward to, in fact I hearas it goes on it gets better!! I just wish I found it sooner!! ha-ha
Like others, I was dubious about this show when I first heard it was comingout. "Oh, yet another version of the Superman story. Yawn." But I wanted togive it a try, and I'm glad I did. It does have its faults - Lex losing hishair at that young an age was a bit contrived; we could have continued tohave the red-haired Lex, a la post-Crisis Superman. That's one of the fewreal faults I can find - that, and the show is either "Superman meetsSpider-Man" (guilt at causing the death of innocents, however inadvertently)or "Superman meets Buffy" (strange phenomena in town, while teens deal withbeing teenagers). The casting is interesting and somewhat inspired - AnnetteO'Toole as Martha, and an actor who looks like a young Christopher Reeve inthe right angle, both pay homage to the movies. John Schneider I would nothave thought of as Jonathan Kent, but he really does a good job - they alldo. The friendship between Clark and Lex is nice; I hope it grows before itturns. Yes, there is a mischievous turn to Lex, but it's possible to maketoo much of it at this stage. When Lex is handling Lana's necklace, thescene is very grim and Lex is obviously plotting. At this stage Lex can'tknow anything about Kryptonite or Superman or why the necklace seemed tomake Clark weaker - did he actually put that together? If he's like most ofus, he's probably thinking it was all in his (Lex's) head, if he noticedanything at all. But the audience is left in the predictable state ofthinking Lex is plotting something devious with the necklace, which I guesshe is, but only to put his friend in a good position with Lana. He hasfairly innocent intentions, but we the audience put a darker intent to thembecause we know who Lex is going to turn into. But that's not the person heis NOW. I'm afraid there's a little too much of that in this series. The Lexwe see right now doesn't necessarily agree with his father on things, and hejust wants to be a friend to Clark. Already in the ads for the show, there'smore made of who Lex will become than who he is right now, which is the LexI'm more interested in because he's the Lex we've neverseen. All that said, this seems to be a very well done show, one which I will bewatching for the foreseeable future.
