STAR RATING:*****Unmissable****Very Good***Okay**You Could Go Out For A MealInstead*Avoid At All CostsRetired detective Eddie Burns (Ving Rhames) is called back in to action whenhis young sister Kassie (Kerry Washington) is abducted by a sinistercriminal named Charlie Strom (Gary Oldman). She's found fairly swiftlythough, returned in one piece despite having been subjected to an horrificrape ordeal. As Burns sets out to seek justice for his sister,it emergesStrom is as eager to set up a meeting with Burns as he is with him,as he hassome business of his own with the detective,in the shape of an unsettledscore. As I watched this dismal feature plod on,I was woken up to a fact I'vechosen to overlook for a while now:Rhames really ain't that great anactor. In some of his other, more bearable features (in which he co-stars) hisproblems with delivery and tone are something I don't tend to notice, butwhen he's carrying the film,he ends up coming out in his true colours. As forOldman,it's really a case of how the mighty have fallen, his once commandingpresence in films of real vitality and inspiration now reduced tocorny, hackneyed psycho turns such as his co starring role here. The plot isan uneven, patchy mess that dabbles in overtures of the ridiculous that bythe time the laughably silly, clumsily self conscious ending has rolledby, have (ahem!) swallowed the film whole.*
There were way too many holes in the plot to make this movie worthwatchingfor everyone that likes the actors or genre. The only reason I watchedtheentire movie was because, as a woman, seeing the massive revenge againstrapists was very satisfying. One of those rare moments in which the womanisn't continually re-victimized. I thought Oldman's performance was alittle more natural than that of Rhames, but his was still decent. Ican'tsay all women would gain anything by seeing rapists tortured. It's dicey.I gave it a 3 out of 10. My feeling is that veterans such as Rhames andOldman should have seen all of the mistakes in dialog and plot consistencyand maybe passed on it altogether. If you're up and bored in the middleofthe night while it's on a movie channel, you might as well watch it.
SIN is a minor movie with a fairly substantive message once we get to it. The film is out of focus, meandering between the beauty of the Nevada desert and the wildlife of downtown Reno, and these poorly edited sequences blur the product and pull the film down. Ving Rhames is a man of the desert, having been dismissed from the police department for some specific blunders - 'sins' as it were - and is left with a moaning existence, a once strong man left with a useless left arm trying to keep his sister from spinning down the drug abuse whirlpool. Gary Oldman is the mastermind, omniscient bad guy out for revenge for his brother's death at the hands of Rhames and in an eye for an eye retribution - his target for retribution is Rhames sister. His stalking of Rhames and the ultimate confrontation of the two 'sinners' who must deal with 'the wages of sin is death' curse make up the bulk of this dark film. One comes away from watching this film feeling that a serious re-write of the bulk of the script might have lead to an insightful statement. But the usual patter of Hollywood pizzazz stealing the eye from the brain puts this movie in purgatory. Good actors make the best of a bad situation.
Yeah, George Parker pretty well has it right, especially the part aboutthewoman who says "don't call me baby," after Ving Rhames saves her life. She's laughable. But there are some fine aspects here, such as some of the photography andthe overall look of some scenes. And some of the acting isn't bad, particularly that of Gary Oldman.Kerry Washington, who played Rhames's petite younger sister, is to-die-forgorgeous.
I found this to be an entertaining movie. No, it wasn't nominated for any awards, and rightfully so. But, that is no fault of the actors in it. Ving Rhames and Gary Oldman, gave their usual great performances, to an average movie. Rhames plays a tough ex-cop with a questionable past. Oldman plays a treacherous pornographer, out for revenge. My only complaint, is that there are several scenes with poor lighting. I don't know if this was done for dramatic effect, but it didn't work for me. I was pleased with the way the movie conveyed the message of how violent their world was, without being "overly" graphic. Overall, I say this movie is worth watching.
This is a pretty good cop revenge movie. Ving Rhames asEddie Burns tracking down the thugs who raped his sister andsold as porn is great. Oldman as Charile Storm the old enemeyof Eddie whose out for his hide because of what he did to hisbrother is good too.Sure the movie isnt anything new but Rhames is hard to ignoreas is Oldman, the cop shoot scenes is played well and there issome good suspense especially with the info about Eddie'spartner who might be betraying him.Check out Sin.
I did not like this movie at all. The acting was not convincing. There were alot of times when I thought to myself "why"? The main charactor, )(whatever his name is) decides to meet his enemy alone and his enemy is the one who sets up this meeting. Now, that's pathetic. It's like a kid going to see a stranger they met online. It's pretty obvious and stupid. Why? This movie was horrible. It was slow and the actors sucked.
I saw this movie only because Gary Oldman was in it. And once again he wasgreat. Too bad he wasn't in the movie as much as he needed to be. The storyis an Ex-Cop is looking for his sister who has entered a life of Sin, hencethe title of the movie. The title is the basic theme, every character hasdone something bad that they either regret or embrace. While the cast wasn'tbad, it was most likely just the story and the editing. I have to say thismovie had some of the worst editing I have ever seen in a movie. It's almostlike they spent all their money on the cast, the film, and the sets. Andthey couldn't afford much for music and editing. Gary Oldman is still great, but because this movie was so boring, I have to say this is his worst movie.Yes, even worse than Nobody's Baby. If you're a Gary Oldman fan, then youmay have to see it. But other than that, it's not even worthrenting.
Quote "What's wrong with you? You seemed to have swallowed a largepoisonous insect?" Quote 2 "I've been drugged, kidnapped and driven through the desert inthe trunk of a "beeping" rental car and forced to watch you blow twomen apart. The last part I am willing to forgive. But I will not haveyou call me baby!"Can anyone believe that this was made in 2003??? The script is just toostupid to believe Gary Oldman and Ving Rhames said yes without a gun totheir heads.Direction issues.. Sister has overdosed and magically this women whoonly knew she was in trouble turns to the graveyard to help save her?Bill Sage looks more like a porn star than a police officer and theporn star in the early scene looked more like the town drunk than aporn star. Then hero Ving Rhames catches one of the men who raped his sister andbeats him up then the police sirens are in the background suggestingthey are coming. The bad guy says "diplomatic immunity" and instead ofrunning away the hero shoots him dead. It is worth watching causefrankly it's impossible to believe they allowed it to be released. Thewriters are probably working for CSI series now!
Considering the caliber of both the main actors it is difficult tounderstand why they both decided to take this project on.The story is neither new or gripping and if you have seen Gary Oldman beforeplaying a bad guy ( Does he play any other character?!)then this will benothing new to you.He is rapidly being typecast .Ving Rhames comes out of this better because at least his character has somesubstance. If you are expecting a classic i'm afraid you are going to be dissapointed. For Ving and Gary fans only.6 out of 10.
It was a wonderful story about who's right and wrong because it is a more realistic look at it. In the beginning it made you like Ving Rhames character and sympathize with him, but near the end you sort of understood what Gary Oldmans character was going through and you realized that there was fault with what both of them were doing and that both of them had sinned.
Much of the film content of "Sin" is excessively violent andunpleasant. The screenwriters have also shamelessly recycledone of the classic screen thriller moments from the hall of mirrorsscene in "The Lady From Shanghai." And was it not possible tocome up with a more imaginative title than "Sin"? Yet there is onecompelling reason to see this movie, and that is for theperformances of Ving Rhames and Gary Oldman. In the same way that the film "Heat" established a dynamic duelbetween Al Pacino's detective and Robert DeNiro's thief, the mostinteresting scenes in "Sin" are those that bring together the ex-cop(Rhames) and the sleazy drug lord (Oldman). The plot concernsthe maniacal acts perpetrated by Oldman's character, who ispursued by Rhames' character, the former cop who lost part of hisarm and all of his idealism after a shady police arrest and illegalinterrogation of an alleged cop-killer.There is one riveting moment when in the middle of an actionscene, the characters discourse on the topic of conscience. In thisconversation, our perception of both Rhames' and Oldman'scharacters change when we realize that one of the characters istotally without conscience and the other has been driven by thehuman emotion of guilt. But this moment remains buried amongpredictable and even cliched action scenes piled one on top ofanother. If the film could have just focused on the internal development ofthe two principal characters, eliminating the violent actionsequences, it would have been more watchable and morememorable. There is something special about these twoexceptional actors, however, that enables Rhames and Oldman torise above the material.
Have you ever seen authentic Hollywood drivel? Well, this is it! The story is infantile, characters performed by the actors all have anIQ of zero, and the producers must've been drunk when they made this. Iwould've understood this kind of garbage being made a decade ago, butin 2003!? And by Gary Oldman?Despite the comments that you can read on amazon.com (probably done bypatriotic American boobs), this is one is a complete waste of time. It's unimaginable that this kind of stories still hold a grip over thepublic. Half the movie is a bunch of cliché sentences and the otherhalf is a meager attempt to portrait cops as heroes. I mean, how manytimes have they done it before?_Anything_ is better than this. An insult to any man's intelligence.
I watched this movie for two reasons; The amazing Gary Oldman and forthe music by Michael Giacchino of whom I'm a fan ever since his "Medalof Honor" scores. The movie was not completely a waste of time but italso was far from good.Man to blame is I think director Michael Stevens, you can tell bylooking at this movie that he is just too unexperienced. There are somewell executed sequences but there are way more scene's that are justpoorly done also due to some weird and dumb camera positions and somepoor editing. Michael Stevens tries to impress the viewer with someshots of nature, it only works distracting and doesn't do much good tothe pace. Maybe he should consider a career as documentary maker? The story is also quite a problem. It takes a while before youunderstand what the movie is all about. Once you pick up the story themovie is actually not bad, it's just that it has been done about ahundred times before.Ving Rhames tries but he just ain't no good leading actor, I liked hiscostume but that's about all the positive I can say. Gary Oldman is inhis element as psychopathic villain. He played a lot of roles like thisbefore but in his case you just never get tired of it. Brian Cox isalso excellent in a small supporting role. And keep an eye on ArieVerveen, I expect great things for him in the future. If you can ignore the bad dialog, story, plot-holes and directingyou'll see that there is some good in this movie and that it is awatchable one that is fairly entertaining as an action movie but not amust see in any way.5/10

Gary olman is a great actor...most of the time.and in spite of thismovie he is still good.So was Ving Rhames..but his lines are even worse. This is not a bad movie, but with the caliber of actors in it I expectedso much more.It almost delivered...but kept stumbling..some of thedialog is very clumsy and awkward.Continuity did not seem to be aconcern here either. This is basically a spaghetti western cop movie, starts pretty good andgrabs you...then lets you go...what a shame.Still it is worth renting if you like this style of movie.
This must be the worst movie I have ever seen. Never ever have I seen somany unmotivated and unlogical scenes. I thought Ving Rhames and GaryOldmanwould make for a good novie based on their previous work - but no, this isby far the worst 'thriller' there is - although it is only the directingthat sucks in this one. Rhames is an ex-cop who goes up against a bad guyplayed very well by Oldman (but with a lousy script). The first 75 minutesseem like a bunch of unconnected commercials shown in sequence to createanundefined affect. The characters are pathetic, the bad ones doublyso. The story could have been ok, with better directing, but even Rhames andOldman couldn't pull this one off.
Before I watched it I came here to look at the grades it had from other people. I was worried that I had rented a real clunker. But, both my wife and I enjoyed the movie. The only problems I had were the car chase at the end. That was really drawn out. And even though I liked Ving, he seems to act exactly the same in every movie he's in.But the movie is definatly worth watching. Come up with your own opinion about it. Don't let other's opinions keep you from seeing this movie.
thought this movie might be good since gary oldman was in it but it turned out to be a disappointment. ving rhames is a man determined to bring down oldman's character for a bad deed he was involved in. had promise but failed. shades of the psychotic oldman from 'state of grace' and 'the professional' are noticed here and there but that cannot save this ineffective film.
Ok Ving is supposed to be this tough as nails ex cop,his sister is kidnapped, tortured and raped. And then he is kidnapped and tortured. But each time he runs into one of the men responsible he lets them go?!!? Only thing good about this vid flick is Oldman's performance.
