Horrid costume

Interesting storyline with some possiblities, but the werewolf looks like a bear. I mean a tall black bear walking around upright. Horrid, 2 stars.

I love this movie

This review is from: Silver Bullet (DVD) Although the reviews for this movie are generally "ordinary" I really love this movie. I guess the best thing about the movie is closure, when the movie ends thats it. No cliffhangers, they get the bad guy, and live happily ever after!

Degrassi Junior High meets Wolf meets a moderately gory slasher flick

Watchable but fairly simple horror fare that uses standardized werewolfmyths, kind of like Stephen King's use of vampires in Salem's Lot - thewerewolf morphs during full moons, for example, and can be killed by asilver bullet (hence the title). The identity of the werewolf is concealedthroughout the movie, although it isn't difficult to work out (and if you'veread through these comments, you'll probably know already). And, like in aplethora of horror flicks, the authorities just don't believe inwerewolvy-type things and the pesky kids are left to work out who it is andput an end to their evil deeds - ho hum.The horror scenes are quite graphic and bloody, given the rating and thatit's probably aimed at the teen market - there is enough there to at leastbate the breath of the seasoned fan of the genre. However the rest of themovie has the feel of a soap opera or HBO family flick, which makes the goreseem a little out of place. Gary Busey is likeable as the cheerful andbustling uncle, who drinks more than he should, while Corey Haim and MeganFollows do the all-American kid thing quite well (sorry Megan, I know you'reCanadian) with their pleasant mix of cheesy smiles, fatalistic curiosity anda little brother-sister tension thrown into the mix. Haim's character iswheelchair-bound, and although the psychological ramifications of thisaren't well explored, at least Busey builds him nice motorised hot-rod typechairs - that contradiction alone should give you an idea of the targetaudience the director was aiming for.Not the best werewolf movie ever made, but certainly not the worst either -you could do a lot worse. Not something I'd suggest you pay money for, butif it comes on TV late one night then it's worth a look (just not if there'sa full moon).

One of the few good Stephen King movie adaptations

"Carrie" is arguably the only other King story that adapted well to the silver screen. Too often a screen play from a Stephen King book is either entirely made-up and works nothing like the original story or crams in too many partial details that can't be explained in 90 minutes (if they ever could)."Silver Bullet" is a very simple story that only centers around four main characters (including the werewolf). It's only about a boy trying to get help from his family to kill a werewolf. If a werewolf actually existed, that scenario is as close to reality as any other. No time is wasted on exploring the poor tortured soul of the werewolf that's typical of these stories. There are no scenes of stupid-citizen-who-has-all-the-evidence-but-doesn't-believe-it-and-becomes-victim-number-5. Well, not really.Yes, this probably is the best reason to see Corey Haim act. Megan Follows is very good as the older sister just before she did "Anne of Green Gables". Gary Busey is entirely believable as the uncle who tries to relate to the kids more as a big brother. I think we all know a relative of ours or someone else's that plays that role. The werewolf costume looks like a costume, but then the artificial shark in "Jaws" wasn't very good either.Like "the Fog" and "Tremors", this is a good horror film that hasn't gotten the positive attention is deserves.

Interesting Werewolf movie.

First off, I am not the biggest werewolf fan in the world. In fact, for themost part I don't care for them. This is just one of the exceptions that Ido like...An American Werewolf in London is another. This one is about awerewolf killing people in a small town. Of course, the people are up inarms about it and want something done. A boy who is paralyzed and hissister end up finding out the identity of the werewolf as the werewolfattack the boy and the boy was able to defend himself by shooting out one ofits eyes. The sister went around to people's houses and eventually cameacross a man with one eye. They convince their uncle that a werewolf iswhat is killing everyone and he has a silver bullet made. The parents gooff one night during a full moon and the uncle and kids must confront thewerewolf. I won't give away who the werewolf is for anyone who hasn't seenthis yet. All in all a pretty cool flick, nothing great about it just easyto watch and enjoy.

The Cycle of the Werewolf comes to the screen

Stephen King wrote the original novella The Cycle of the Werewolf andadapted it to film with a title that better fits the story. When all'ssaidand done, Silver Bullet generally holds your interest. The mystery of thewerewolf's identity is not too readily obvious (unless you've read thebook)and there's sufficient suspense and gore. Good acting all around, especially "the man" Gary Busey. Not the best of the genre, but mostdefinitely not the worst.

Another fun movie based on Stephen King's book !

I didn't make a sound and didn't leave the sofa when I wached it. I'm a big Stephen King fan, so when I sall that on the "Silver Bullet" tape it said " Written by Stephen King" I took it. It was fun, exciting and a little scary ( it doesn't have to be too scary). I've seen the movie about ten times now, but I never read the book, I'm shure the book is fantastic. I'll now tell you a little bit about the movie. The movie is about a liittle handycapt boy on his automatic weal-chair wicth he named - "Silver bullet". He and his older sister oftenly argued, never got along just like all brothers and sister ( all thougth they all know that they still love each other). So in the town where that little boy and his family lived werewolfs hunted at nigth. They started to kill alot of people. And the cool part is when you'll find out who the werewolf is. Remember it's always you least expect ! The movie is good but the only thing I didn't like much is that the werewolf looked fake ( consigering that this movie was made in the early 80's) but the fun story of the movie makes up for that. Thank you for reading my review, enjoy the movie !

Carlo Rambaldi did not save the universe.

I used to believe that if effects guy Carlo Rambaldi hadn'tdeliberately designed a really naff werewolf to diffuse some of theincredible awesomeness generated by the combination of Corey Haim andGary Busey, then the unbridled power of Silver Bullet would haveresulted in the end of the universe (something akin to the apocalypticscenario predicted before the testing of the CERN Hadron Collider in2008).I no longer hold this view, having since realised that theenergy-sucking crapness of the movie's main monster is automaticallynegated by Haim's cool-as-f••k motorised wheelchair, the macabrewerewolves-a-go-go in a church nightmare scene, a marvellouslyeffective night-time wolf hunt through a misty forest, and theunforgettable sight of Busey being thrown around like a rag-doll, allof which renders any intentional shoddiness on Rambaldi's part utterlypointless.I'm now resigned to the fact that, whilst Haim and Busey are anundeniably cool combination, they don't actually possess the power toend existence for all time (unlike, for example, the teaming of JohnSaxon with Michael Ironside and Tom Atkins). And Rambaldi is highlyover-rated as a movie monster maker.

Nice Little Werewolf Film

This review is from: Silver Bullet (DVD) In a genre that is filled with so much trash, Silver Bullet ranks as one of the best horror and werewolf films. This picture centers around a young man named Marty and his family. Together Marty, his sister Jane and their Uncle Red unravel the mystery behind the killings that are occuring in their small town. The culprit behind the killings and his motives are some of the interesting aspects of this nice little gem of a movie. The acting is great, the music is top notch, and the script by Stephen King is great as well. For a scary night on the town, watch Silver Bullet.

Wonderful King Adaptation

This review is from: Silver Bullet (DVD) Silver Bullet (1985) is a very good movie. The acting is top-notch. Corey Haim is very sincere and gives a great performance as Marty, the wheelchair-ridden, yet exuberant main character. Megan Follows gives a strong, believable job as Jane, Marty's stressed and responsiblity-pounded sister. Gary Busey, once againm, is extremely likeable as the kids' hard-drinking uncle who spoils Marty. Everett McGill is great as the town reverand, who is the werewolf. He does a good job making you think that he actually believes that he is saving people's souls from hell and doesn't want to be a werewolf. The werewolf effects are a little cheezy, but this is countered by keeping the werewolf in the shadows. The music comes on as a little sappy at a few points, but all around it is effective. With good suspense and good pacing, Silver Bullet is a win.

Average werewolf film

A small town is experiencing some mysterious deaths. The authoritiesbelieve a killer is on the loose but young wheelchair bound MartyCoslaw(Corey Haim) seems to think there could be a werewolf involved, his crazy alcoholic uncle Red doesn't believe him but agrees to helphim solve the case. Another Stephen King adaptation, this time of his"Cycle of the werewolf" novella. The film is very 80's with the usualcomic leanings but there's still enough of a werewolf plot to keep youinterested, even if the identity of the lycanthrope isn't disguised towell. SFX are average for the time, Gary Busey takes the actingplaudits here, Haim is lightweight but perfect for the role.

number one werewolf movie

Corey Haim gives his best performance as a boy who is stuck in a wheel chair but when he see's a werewolf he turns to his sister and his uncle for help.A definate must see movie for werewolf freaks. END

"There are no such things as werewolves!"

~Spoiler~I owe quite a bit to this movie for opening up a lot of doors. SilverBullet is one of the first horror movies I saw when I was a kid and hassince gained it's own special place in my heart. And it's still aclassic to this day. I love to watch it. The dream sequence is one ofmy favorite scenes. As well as the hunt for the werewolf after thefireworks accident. The werewolves identity is hidden very well. I hadno idea who it was when I first watched it, of course I was probablysix years old though. Everett McGill plays the best role in the movie.Especially when Corey Haim finds out he's the wolf. I think he scaresme more when he's in human form. The werewolf itself isn't bad though. The best effects are at the end when the hair is receding to reveal theReverend's body. It's not the best werewolf effects, however. TheHowling and An American Werewolf in London boast far bettertransformation scenes. And does anyone remember the Monster Squad? Thatmovie had a killer werewolf. But Silver Bullet is on the list of bestwerewolf movies. Stephen King wrote it based on his book, so there isno rape of his material (unlike most King flicks). Fans should bepleased, especially with the scene where the sheriff is carrying thebloody kite, it's the best.

Great edtion for any movie collection!

I haven't seen many werewolve movies, but this would have to be good bywerewolve movie,Horror,or just plain movie standards! This was the first Rrated horror movie I saw.Keep your eye on the scren because although thewerewolf is shown a lot,he moves quick,so you won't get too many goodshotsof him.The main charicters are also a good touch!Definetly a mustsee!

Very Underrated

Silver Bullet (1985) *** 1/2 (out of 4) I know An American Werewolf in London and The Howling usually get allthe praise but for my money this is the best werewolf film of the1980s. I thought everyone loved this film until getting the internetand reading how many people actually didn't enjoy it but I still loveit. I think the film works well as a coming of age story with all thehorror elements thrown in for good measure. Kinda like a horror versionof The Goonies with Corey Haim and Gary Busey doing great worktogether. The supporting cast of actors also serve well in the story. The scene in the fog and the ending are full of wonderful tension aswell.

Pure fear but the werewolf is a pure monster!

This film by Stephen King is very effective as for fear and suspense. The trick of the film, that I cannot reveal, is that the werewolf is THE person no one would suspect. The great merit of the film is that the werewolf is killed by a young handicapped boy and by his sister, with the help of their uncle and a silver bullet, of course. This executioning team is not a surprise in Stephen King's world of suspense. There is somewhere in his world the belief that only people who believe in dreams and nightmares, i.e. children, can confront and destroy evil in this world. The theme of the handicapped person at the center of the tale is common in King's books and many have to be quoted : « The Talisman », « The Stand », for example. We could do the same thing with girls : « Carrie », « The Firestarter », for two. The only shortcoming of the film is that we do not feel the twelve month cycle of the original novella that was written for a special calendar. But I guess this is not very important here. We can also regret the systematic compliance of King with the tradition when he deals with monsters like vampires or werewolves, and lately extraterrestrials. They are monsters, and nothing else, that have to be destroyed. There is never any kind of second vision, regeneration, epiphany. So don't look for any deviation from the normal course of such a story. Dr Jacques COULARDEAU, Paris Universities II and IX.

This movie is great!

I usually catch this one every year on TNT, but I plan to purchase the DVD soon. This is one of the better werewolf movies I seen. Very good acting, especially by Gary Busey. He plays a drunken uncle of a handicapped boy named Marty. Tarker's Mill is struck by murders. Citizens of the city fear that a maniac did the job. They try to find the killer, only to come up with evidence that a hairy creature is the one. The creature strikes only once a month, when a full moon arrives.People lock their doors, and Marty, doesn't believes that the killer is a man, but a werewolf. After a run in with the werewolf Marty and his half sister, Jane hunt all over town for the hairy creature.

I loved the movie

Well seeing as how the movie was made in 1985 I think the visuals aren't that bad. I'm a big fan of movies from the 80's and this one, definately, is one you'll remember. I was scared the first time I saw it. I thought it was great.
