Very touching

This movie is a classic Tanya Roberts , I feel she was so natural inthe role instead of fake acting, she is also very magnetic in all herattractions.Shenna is truly the Queen of the jungle , also the villainsare superb in there ability to make you hate them for there dirtydeeds. Also some comedy relief in some scenes, the best scene of course, is Tanya bathing ala natural , which shows her real outside beauty ,no way around this , she is gorgeous and thats that. The actual junglescenery is great , and her animal magnetism was done well, and her repore with the animals was great as was the rest of the cast. Thisshould have been rated better, possibly more jealous women voting,Tanya is just drop dead gorgeous.

Low Expectations

This was never meant to be a movie you'd want to put in a time capsule. It was only supposed to be a pleasant adventure based on a comic book.In some ways at least, the film succeeds. The plot is a coherent taleof greedy villains vs. underdog heroes, although it has the normalimplausibilities of adventure films (bad guys are experienced soldierswith automatic weapons but can't hit a thing). The movie was filmed inKenya and has some spectacularly beautiful photography of Africanplains and wildlife.Even in a movie with modest aspirations, though, it is surely a badsign when the best acting is done by animals. The chimpanzees were thebest, although the lions and elephants also turn in fine performances. The human cast doesn't fare so well. Tanya Roberts has the look of abeautiful woman who can fight, but you'll want to hit the mute buttonwhenever she recites her lines. A good appearance at least puts herone-up on co-star Ted Wass. In a movie which tries to combineadventure, romance, and humor, he has no toughness, charm, or wit.And a cautionary note to anyone who thinks the comic book heritage ofthis film and its PG rating might make it a good choice for children. This film has nudity and graphic violence that normally isn't allowedwith a PG rating. I think this film came out just before the PG-13rating was created. If Sheena were released today, it would be at leasta PG-13 and maybe even an R rated film.

The feminine side of Tarzan.

I could watch the wonderfully appealing Tanya Roberts all day in slowmotion riding that horse… Ah I mean zebra and swinging through thejungle. Who wouldn't? She looked great. However with the acting, I justdon't know if that was her natural abilities shinning through becauseit seemed to be taking a lot out of her with her constant headgrabbing. No that's right, she's telepathically communicating with theanimals ala "The Beastmaster". As for the film itself… of epicproportions. Director John Guillermin kind of shoots himself in thefoot. The material tries to be fashionable with it's comic-book originsthat's based upon S.M. Eiger and Will Eisner's comic strip books"Sheena, Queen of the Jungle", but transcends into campy goofiness andlazy story-telling with an awkward sexual allurement. I don't know whothis was aimed at. It pushes the boundaries of juvenile silliness thatseems to be aimed at children, but its free flowing t&a (thankyou to anekid Tanya) rules out that possibility. But how, this one has a familyfeel to it. The action set-pieces are often poorly staged andeye-boggling, with a rough around the edges quality coming through.Other than Roberts being pretty much eye-candy, the stunning Kenyalocations managed to give the film a sense of place with Pasqualino DeSantis' handsome widescreen photography being smoothly protracted. Onthe other side of the coin Richard Hartley's music score was relativelyham-fisted and out-of-place. Even the script tackles many issues in atacky, forced one-note mode that's quite rib-tickling or pain-stakingdepending on the mood of the viewer. The romance between Roberts andWass is pitiful. Starring opposite of Roberts is Ted Wass, who'scapably charming in his role. Donovan Scott is given free reign in thecomic part. I don't think this film is that awful, as its made out tobe, but it has quite a few bad elements that'll give it a hard time intrying to fight off that stinker tag. At least the laughs keep oncoming. Unintentional or not, is the question?

Comic book fun with a female Tarzan.

Comic book fun gives girls a chance to have a Tarzan like superhero. Predates the Xena craze which in this case allows lead character to not only be strong but have a sexy innocence. Kids will like the animals and colorful action, while adults will like the African scenery and role reversal relationship between Sheena and the male lead. Rated PG for jungle violence and some brief unoffensive nudity, this cute family action picture might be worth a look if your looking for an old fashioned Indiana Jones type of film.

Just Imagine a Female Tarzan.

With slight modifications, Sheena is basically just a female version of Tarzan (my all-time favorite fictional character). Everyone pretty much knows going in that the plot, dialogue and acting of a film like this will be of the "B" movie variety, and it is (kinda like Indiana Jones but a bit less compelling). What's magnificent, awe-inspiring and "A" level is the African locations (Kenya), the score and Tanya Roberts.Seriously, if you're bored with your every-day locale this movie is the perfect antidote. It's virtually a two-hour tour of some of the most gorgeous African scenery you'll ever feast your eyes on. As for the score, it's pleasant and meditative; reminiscent of "Chariots of Fire." As for Tanya Roberts, what can I say? She's stunningly ravishing. I was a little surprized by the PG rating because Sheena (Roberts) is shown TOTALLY nude on a number of occasions and prances around throughout the flick in a ridiculously skimpy leather bikini; but then it struck me that it's portrayed in an inoffensive way like Eve in Eden before the fall and the consequent awareness of evil. In other words, there's an almost child-like innocence and purity to Sheena even though she's a quite skilled warrior. I commend the film-makers for successfully capturing this quality. For this reason I personally don't feel the movie is inappropriate for kids, despite the nudity. My rating of "4 Stars" reflects the happy medium between the 3-Star plot, dialogue & acting and the 5-Star African locations, score and Ms. Roberts.

A childhood favorite.

Along with "Ghostbusters," this is the oldest film I can ever rememberseeing. I first saw it on a taped Beta copy when I was about two or three.Iwatched it up until our Beta machine finally died sometime in 1994 or1997,and recently my dad got it for me for Christmas on DVD. I have to confessIdo like this film in spite of all its obvious flaws, not the least ofwhichis Tanya Roberts' questionable acting abilities, and to tell the truth I'mkind of sick of everyone giving it a hard time.Yes, Tanya Roberts is a terrible actress, the story is full of holes, andfor a PG movie there's a surprising amount of realistic violence. Inparticular, the helicopter attack on a herd of antelope was prettyneedlessly grotesque and it didn't sit well with one of my friends who sawthe film with me recently. And then there's the two scenes withfull-frontalnudity.But I'll always love this cheese-fest of a movie regardless of all that isso very wrong with it, most likely because, as noted above, it's one ofthetwo first movies I ever saw as a child. Yeah, when I was a wee one Iwatcheda movie with female nudity, villains wielding automatic weapons, andscenesof genocide both human and non-human (mostly implied genocide, butgenocidenonetheless). And you know what? I turned out just fine as an adult. TakeTHAT, parental watchdog groups! In closing, you can all whine and complain about Miss Roberts' acting andthe film's other flaws until the cows come home. But the one thing I wishpeople would quit talking about is Sheena's trusty zebra mount, Marika.Yes,it's a horse painted to look like a zebra, but take into account the factthat zebras have resisted all human effort to tame them (or so I've beentold). Thus, with tame zebras a figment of the imagination and the scriptrequiring a horse, the filmmakers did the best they could. So cut themsomeslack, please.

Enjoy The Film For What Is Was Intended

Sheena wasn't made to win any Academy awards. Nevertheless, for a "B"film the photography is actually quite good. Granted, Tanya's actingability at this time in her life needed a lot of work. I'm sure theproducers knew this going in and didn't care. They knew the attractionwould be to watch Sheena doing her thing in her jungle outfit. Tanyawas the perfect choice considering the reason for the film. Sheena wasmade to showcase Tanya Roberts stunning physical attributes and wassuccessful in this regard. She is the reason the movie is stillmoderately popular after 20 years. So if you like this type ofeye-candy film, enjoy! It wasn't meant to be anything else.

Sheena

This review is from: Sheena (DVD) No matter what you think of the acting and plot, the music and sceneary in Kenya is magnificent. Keeping with all gatekeeper reviews this movie contains adult nudity (Tanya Roberts) and child nudity (the two girls that play Tanya at younger ages - mostly all topless scenes).

Beware of the killer flamigoes in Busch Gardens

Tanya Roberts' vacant performance is just one of the highlights in this awful movie with one of the worst musical scores ever composed, Roberts riding a zebra(they are more fashionable looking than horses.) with the music droning on against a beautiful backdrop and nothing else.

A Great Performance By The Shaman!!!!

This movie would not be worth watching if it were not for the performance by the Shaman of the tribe, played by Elizabeth Bagaya. It was her performance that really stood out. She brought a feeling of authenticity. If I did not know better I would have thought she really was the Shaman of that tribe. Oh ya, Tanya Roberts was good too in this movie, but did not come close to matching the talent of Elizabeth Bagaya!!!! Job Well Done!!

What A Movie

This movie is absolute cow doody. The storyline is not bad at all, however piecing the movie together seems as if it were done by people who were either drunk or high or both. The acting is atrocious - I seriously believe they hired whoever first showed up for casting tryouts. Directing and visual effects are apparently done by a four year old. I give this movie a D-.

Unbelievably bad B-Picture

This is one to avoid, unless you are a lover of really good B-films. Ifthat is the case, watch this one to reinforce how really good some B-filmscan be and how bad some other ones are. Can't believe it was shown at AMCas in "American Movie Classics". Nothing "classic" about thisone.

Rumble in the Jungle

If you like a good Jungle flick, this isn't it. The only saving grace is Tanya Roberts showing her assests (nude) in the movie, so if you missed Roberts centerfold spread this dvd will do.

Terrible, shouldn't be PG

I saw this movie on "Comcast, Encore" It was absolutley terrible. The acting was bad, The Plot was bad, The Movie was all out just bad. It deserves a failing grade. I give it an "F". Parents should know that the "PG" rating is not right. Since the movie came out in the 80's it could contain material as bad as "R" rated movies. This is one of them. So let me tell you what the rating system would probably give this. SheenaRated R (Previously Rated PG in 1980) Rated R for: Some Violence, Scenes of nudity, Sexual Innuendo, and brief Language. I hate this movie alot. But I can say that "Sheena" is pretty Hot!

Just okay

I loved this movie when I was eleven. But if you're older, you will mostly be bored. It's okay if you don't take it at all seriously. Surprising though, it has a very good soundtrack.

Truly enjoyable adventure yarn

In the early 20th century, Audrey Munson made her movie debut inThanhouser's "Inspiration" (1915), essentially playing herself: anartist's model. A year later, she appeared in another film, "Purity"(1916). What is remarkable about these films is that in both, Miss Munsonappears in the nude. This is in the nineteen-teens, remember. Therewere censorship boards then, run by the states rather than the filmindustry... and of course they always sought to keep the movie screensfree of smut. And yet, both "Inspiration" and "Purity" were approved for publicexhibition... because the nudity in them was artistic and non-erotic. Idon't know if that standard has ever been applied, to any other film;or rather, I didn't know, until I chanced across "Sheena" (1984).Browsing through the channels one evening, I found this film, starringTanya Roberts as Sheena, Queen of the Jungle. "I'll give it a chance,"I figured. So my wife and I watched as Ms. Roberts, clad only in aleather bikini-like garment, went about her adventures in the junglesof darkest Africa. Then, out of nowhere, there's a scene where she stops by a lake tobathe. I figured she would just jump in, since she's already wearingpractically nothing anyway, right? Wrong! Before we knew what was happening, Tanya Roberts slipped out of hergarment and entered the lake nude, in all God's glory. I mean it when Isay I didn't see it coming. Most of the time when you see nudity on thescreen, you kinda know it's coming, but this was a real surprise.I checked the program guide for the MPAA rating. Gotta be an R, right?Wrong again! Sheena was given a PG rating -- not a PG-13, not an R, notan NC-17. It's a PG, meaning any youngster, of any age, can see themovie without an adult. And, come to think of it, the "ParentalGuidance" suggested by PG is probably because of some battle scenes inthe movie.Thinking back, I wonder: Is this the first time since the two AudreyMunson films in 1915 and 1916, that on-screen adult nudity has beenallowed, with no restrictions whatsoever?I'm not a big fan of nude scenes, and I don't seek them out. But thisone, in Sheena, has to be the most innocent one I've ever seen.Dan N.

last surviving fairy tale

Tanya Roberts certainly got the best part of her career (alongside theRogerMoore Bond movie, of course) in "Sheena". It's hard to pretend so muchinnocence and naivete after a life spent in NY and Hollywood, of allplaces. That's acting... I'd like to point out many scenes with the animals, arranged better than in many Tarzan competitors, and I am not afraid toadmit I still am fascinated by this fairy tale that was kindalike thelastsurvivor in 1984 - before digital FX took control. Seen the OTT animalscenes in Jumanji? Maybe you feel the same then.
