SCRE4M review (Spoiler free)

Hey guys. Awaiting this as a big fan of the franchise, I tried to tonedown my expectations, but when the time came at the pre-premiere inDenmark, I found it hard not to be intoxicated by the atmosphere aroundthe Palads Theatre.First off, this will not contain spoilers! The opening scene: Simplygreat. Almost reaches the heights of the original, and this - indeed isoriginal as well. Knocked people off their chairs, and everyone bustedout in celebration. I was very surprised how the "feel" from the firstfilm really worked it's way into this scene. The middle: Great character building - loads of suspects, and constanttwists and turns (most in the end though - obviously) The newgeneration is great as well, even though I would say that one or twocharacters is a bit misplaced. One character that I was reallysurprised with, was Hayden Panettieres! She did an outstanding job, andstole most of the scenes she was in. The old gang, Sid, Dewey and Galewas very important to this movie, and also the main reason why it works(as you want a Scream film to work 10 years later) The ending: I won'tgive anything away, not even.. Anything. But look out: It's heavy, andit's great! I was very surprised with this one, it really did well, andI would place it in between the first and the second. It was very"screamish", and that was the most important thing for this film to doto the audience. It was a ride back to 1996, but at the same time aclear statement of new-age horror! I gave the first one a 9, and sinceI'll place this a little below, an 8 is the least I could give it! 7 issimply too low, which is good! As a hardcore fan, I love this! Veryimportant for the series!! The ending:

Best of the sequels

In my opinion the original Scream was great. It brought something newto the horror movie genre with its combination of horror, humour, parody, self-awareness and clever plot twists. The first sequel wasalso good fun and while not as good as the original Scream 2 was stilla well worthy follow-up. But then came the pretty much rubbish Scream3. The rule of number three in series hit once again, just like withSpider-man 3, X-men: the last stand and Terminator 3. After that letdown one would think that the crew would be tempted to just have letthe franchise die with that. Maybe they actually had considering thatit has been eleven years since number three. But then Scream 4 hashappened and I am glad it did because it takes the series back to itsfeet, a satisfying series ender and even more it is actually the bestsince the first. Well in my opinion at least. One thing that they havesucceeded so surprisingly with is the characters. In many long ongoingseries the big main actors tend to pass on to other projects but NeveCampbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette are all back for the fourthtime which is great as it maintains a continuity which is a bigstrength for the series and us viewers wanting to come back to followwhat happens to them. It is no spoiler to say that several are killedthroughout the films and so new once must be introduced. Even if Scream2 was good the characters never managed to live up to the cast of thefirst one. And those in Scream 3 are just so thin they could betransparent. Scream 4 has great new characters and thanks to both thescript but also the actors, one can actually remember who is who thistime. Emma Roberts and Hayden Panettiere are good in managing to createcharacters that you get some connection to and interest to follow notjust being background material to the recurring ones. Something elsethat works great with this film is the plot. The mystery is interestingall the way both in the build up and the resolution. From the cleverand even more funny opening to the mind f*** ending. The story has somegreat twists that I no way saw coming. I think the whole motive makesthe most sense since the first. It might seem strange to state that themotive for killings make sense but it's not in that way I mean. What Imeant is that the whole reveal of the villain is less far-fetched. Icould not entirely buy the deus ex machina ending of Scream 2 and theless said about the absurd, predecessor ruining twists of Scream 3 thebetter. But then this is a horror movie, so what about the scarymoments? Well that is where the film does not succeed completely. Thefilm is very bloody as expected but this time well considered by WesCraver to not go too much over the top. However the murders go veryfast and the music while good at making the right feel not necessarilyscary. There are some jump moments but on the whole the film is morefun than scary. The first is still scariest and this and the second areabout equal. Still while not terrifying it works well enough.Scream 4 is great. This could work well as an ending to the series butmost likely we will be seeing a fifth one and maybe more than that. Fornow I'm at least satisfied that it makes up for the rubbish conclusionthat was Scream 3 which can now be just ignored. A great thrill ridewith its clever plot and surprisingly well done characters.

mmmm where do i start

after being entertained by scream 1 even tho it was pretty awful idecided to give scream one more chance after the truly dreadful scream2 and 3. when the film started i was confused as i thought i waswatching a terrible episode of the hills. with the typically annoyingplastic chiselled jaw actors that America seems to persist on givingthese roles. why these horror films have to always start with dreadfulactors who always seem to play high school teens who drink and smokeweed. horror genre is dead in fact there have been very few good horrorfilms at all. the classics like the shining, the thing and Rosemary'sbaby etc seem along time ago. please please Wes craven stop makingterrible movies. if you actually like this film you obviously don'tunderstand what a good film is. AVOID THIS FILM a generous 3 out of 10

To much of everything

I liked all 3 Scream movies and was pretty much looking forward to theunexpected sequel, glad that Wes Craven directed it again. But was itworth the wait? Not really. It was literally to much of everything thatmade the Scream movies great, but lacking story and dramaturgy. I lovedthe beginning gag (and the cameo by Anna Paquin, but thinking about itnow, it was symptomatic for the development. The references to "howhorror movie sequels work" became annoying after a while. The actingwas not really convincing (especially Emma Roberts was horrible towardsthe end), but it was cool to see the whole crew (Sydney, Dewey, Gale)again reunited. All the killing did not really help the characterdevelopment that makes you "care" for the victims... It wasentertaining for nostalgic reasons, but unlike 1 to 3, I don't reallywant to see Scream 4 more than once...

This was a very, very, very great movie!

The movie plot was awesome. The script, fantastic! The music, great! The actors and actresses, perfect! This movie gave me goosebumps in every possible way and it got methinking if who was the killer.SPOILER ALERT! I love the twist of the movie knowing that Jill (EmmaRoberts) was the killer in the GhostFace mask. I loved how she acted inthis movie. Great job, Emma.Lastly, I was a little upset because there wasn't many super goryscenes and scenes that can make you jump off your seat, shout and peeyour pants. Plus the 10 minutes intro before the title was given waspretty much annoying. It's like you watch the first ten minuted of themovie and then you are disappointed knowing that that was just theintro and it wasn't in the real plot. But to round it all up, Scre4m or Scream 4 is a movie you just can'tmiss.

phd_travel 2012-05-22 07:05:17

Pretty good

Twists and turns and lots of stabbings that don't give you a chance toavert your eyes. It's very graphic but somehow comical so it's not toohorrible. The story is quite good for this kind of movie could beirritating but it isn't. If it is a finale for the series it's quitegood. Don't really need another one after this.Lots of young A list female TV stars of CW and ABC family TV populatethis movie. Courtney Cox looks great but Neve Campbell is a bit puffynow. What happened to the slim dancer? Emma Roberts stars too. The guysapart from Adam Brody and David Arquette are a bit B list.Worth a watch for fans of the series.

Maleplatypus 2012-05-21 18:40:18

Simply horrible

After the original movie (which was a kind of an original andimaginative approach to horror genre, and so Wes Crawen), everythingafterward (so called "sequels") was just milking a dead cow. This movieis an excellent example what should not be done. Recycling waste may begood for the environment, but movies - no thanks. This movie recyclesitself. It's like making a fourth cup of tea with the same (dry)teabag. There's nothing new or exciting or original in this movie, except for the(really) bad and unmotivated acting. Everything elseyou've seen before. There are so many movies which should never havehad any thought of a sequel (or remake). Scream (1) is one of them.Don't waste your time on this one (as I did). Corteney Cox Arquettestill looks good, though.

Loved Scre4m

Amazingly Clever, chilling, and funny. Second best movie in the series.Scream 2 and 3 were lacking components that set this film high abovethe others in this series. Easily another addition to the slasher flickhall of fame. The biggest body. The goriest kills. Thte craziestkillers. When you think you have this movie's killers figured out thinkagain. Go see Scre4m. It is fantastic. Best in the series next toScream. Amazing beginning, definitely different from what you think isgoing to happen. Totally different ending from what you expect. Killsare way more extreme like the trailer states. A had a few problems witha few make-up wardrobe goofs but overall a B+

You're the dumb blond with the big tits (who then runs up the stairs)

Scream 4 is a minor miracle. It not only furthers the story of Scream,it updates it. When Scream came out in 96, there was no social media, there was no Blair Witch Project. It was simply a couple of killers whotook their love of movies too far. They terrorized people using a codedcell phone. That's about as inventive as they got.It worked brilliantly as Scream became one of top 25 films of all time. With horror legend Wes Craven directing a fresh and brilliant script bynewcomer Kevin Williamson, Scream poked fun at and paid homage to allthe horror films that came before it.Here we are 15 years later and the trick is to somehow stay true to thetone of the original while updating it for today's post-Twittergeneration. That can be a tricky thing. Look at the utter failure ofZombie's Halloween. It was a reboot and it tried to walk a fine linebetween keeping the tone of the original and Zombie adding his ownflair. It didn't work at all. But this time, Craven and Williamson havemade a ridiculously brilliant film in Scream 4. All the witty dialogue, all the irreverent nods to the horror films of the last 50 years, allthe hot young women, and all the goofiness of some of the othercharacters that we love, it's all here. The film even gets ballsyenough to tell you that it is basically following in the footsteps ofthe original. So when it tells you this, you try to piece it alltogether and see if you can figure out who's doing the killing. As much as I like to be surprised at the end of a horror film, or anygood who-dunnit, it isn't very often when I can't figure out the ScoobyDoo endings. But I was honestly baffled in this one, right up till thevery end when all is revealed. Kudos to the script and to Craven forreally keeping you guessing. The story has Sidney returning to Woodsboro for the ten yearanniversary of the killings. She has written a book about her harrowingexperience and it has gone on to be a best seller. As soon as shearrives, the killings start again and that familiar voice is tauntingher and her niece and her friends. Emma Robertson is her niece Jill andHayden Pantierre plays her best friend Kirby. David Arquette andCourtney Cox reprise their roles and then you can add in all kinds ofexcellent cameos or small roles from the likes of Anthony Anderson, whoplays Deputy Anthony Perkins...wink wink..nudge nudge...and KristenBell and Anna Paquin.Soon the locals start getting bumped off, but in much more gruesomefashion than other Scream films. There are plenty of stabbings and theoutcome is bloody and gruesome. In an homage to Wes Craven's originalfright film Last House on the Left, one of the victims actually hastheir intestines laying beside them. It was a very shocking, albeitquick moment, but it was there. The film really plays up the fact that the killer wants to up the antein this one. The killer is using the internet to broadcast the killsand this makes the killer incredibly sick. And when you find out(during the talking killer part, when the killer, instead of justkilling their victim, explains the whole plot to them) what themotivation is for this killing spree, you just might stand up andcheer. I'm not sure if Williamson or Krueger wrote the last part aboutnot having to work for fame anymore, you just have to have messed upstuff happen to you, but regardless of who did, it's one of the mostbrilliant and apropos lines I've ever heard.Scream 4 is miles better than the last one and imo it even surpassesthe very good Scream 2. I am ready for a fifth. The movie really takesyou back to what I loved about Scream 1 and 2. Sidney's been through alot, but I think she go another round or two.9/10

Scream 4 reminds us of the nostalgic days when horror films were fun.

Within minutes of the film's opening two articulate teenage girls waxlyrical about the drudgery of torture porn in the horror genre. It's abitter jab at modern horror film makers who have made gratuitousbrutality the pedigree for contemporary cinema. Wes Craven and KevinWilliamson make it abundantly clear that the current state of thehorror genre needs to be deconstructed and satirized, lest the genrerelapses into formulaic trend... again. When Scream 3 was released in2000 it was met with an underwhelmed reception largely due to the factthat it was a caricature of its predecessors. As a result the Screamtrilogy ended on a whimper, rather than a bang. As evident as Scream 3was in satirizing trilogies, Scream 4 aims its cross-hairs at rebootsand the commercialized position of studios which produce sequels soconsistently they become a trademark, rather than a series. Craven andWilliamson go back to the basics by constructing a tight narrative thatplays fast and loose with conventions. This is to say that the "meta"elements in Scream and Scream 2 that deconstructed conventions in thehorror genre are evident, but are complemented by a coherent story withno subplots. Scream 4 is reflective of the original: set in Woodsboro, new cast of teens in peril, etc. Craven and Williamson have provided acommentary on the redundancy of reboots, though like all Scream filmsthe clichés are subversive. That is as much as I am willing to divulgeon the elements of the plot and how it unfolds. Suffice it to say, though, that the new cast is impressive, particularly Erik Knudsen andthe always stunning Hayden Panettiere. I actually cared about thecharacters in Scream 4 and found them to be well-rounded, as opposed toknife fodder for Ghostface. Speaking of which, the iconic character isrepresentative of what modern audiences have come to love in horrorfilms: unrelenting. Ghostface is at his most gloriously deranged inthis entry, usually the victim of projectile pot plants and trippingover; here he is represented as an unstoppable force of incrediblebrutality. Scream 4 is the goriest entry, but it's also the funniest.Where Scream 3 ventured into hammy parody, Scream 4 effortlesslybalances comedy and horror without retreading too obviously into onegenre, thereby satisfying horror fans and casual film goers alike. WhenScream came out in 1996, it satirized slashers of the 80's, overtteenage angst, and the then burgeoning use of cell phones. The Screamseries has always been characterized by the medium of stalking throughtelephones. Given the variables of communication used today (twitter, facebook, phone apps) it would be redundant for Craven and Williamsonto suggest to the modern audience that they were being disparate andoriginal in their use of cell phones, thus we are treated to thevariables of communication used in this film: ranging from streamedvideo casts to Ghostface stalking via text. Here, Williamson's scriptis apt in sending up the ubiquitous means of technology and networkingas excessive. Ultimately, Scream 4 succeeds so well because it entertains and refusesto sink into morbid gratuity. The script is self-indulgent, witty andgenerally surprising. All performances, spare Mary McDonnell's, arepitch-perfect, and on that note it is a pleasure seeing the originaltrio back. Wes Craven reminds us that when he has the right material heis a sharp and gifted filmmaker. I strongly recommend Scream 4 toveteran horror fans and casual film goers alike.

11 Years Is Too Long....

'Scream 4' is the latest installment in the vastly popular 'Scream'franchise. The original film spoofed the what horror genre was in the'90s. It was a huge hit. After 'Scream 3' wrapped up the series, Screamfans never expected to be receiving a fourth film, until KevinWilliamson came up with the perfect idea: making fun of what the horrorgenre is vastly made up of today…remakes. The script by Kevin Williamson is pure genius; it combines the originalcast members with a "new" version of each character of the 1996'Scream.' It balances the leading original cast with this newgeneration quite effectively. Aside from the obvious witty dialogue, the wonderful thing about Williamson's writing is the little details headds to the story. For example, there's a moment where the Deputy ofWoodsboro asks Sidney if she remembers her from High School (Sidneydoesn't remember going to school with her). "I was a lost boy and youplayed…..Tiger Lily."The cast is no letdown. The 'Scream' Series has always attracted goodactors, something most horror film series fail to do. Neve Campbellreturns to the leading role of Sidney Prescott and while she is veryeffective, she doesn't have the meat to achieve the powerhouseperformance she did in the previous installment. Courteney Cox tearsback into Gale Weathers, and it's the definition of a knockoutperformance. Her character has undergone much character developmentover the series (she evolved from a nasty reporter to a woman in love). She blends the two in this one and she wraps arguably her bestperformance around her finger. David Arquette rounds out the survivingtrio, and he does solid job, although gets overshadowed by his twoleading ladies. The standouts from the new cast were Hayden Panettiere, Marley Shelton, and Emma Roberts. Panettiere adds as much flavor as she can to hercharacter playing Kirby the spunky best friend of Sidney's cousin Jill, who is played by Emma Roberts delivers a very surprising and disturbingperformance. Marley Shelton is a alliance to the new cast, as she playsthe creepy Deputy Judy Hicks. Great acting from the entire new cast, they form a true ensemble. The thing that makes Scream 4 so special is that it not only continuesthe story of Sidney, Gale, and Dewey and begins the story of the newcast, but it combines and honors the first three films. It's almostlike one big celebration of Scream, Scream 2, and Scream 3. It's acherished treat for Scream fans. This is what remakes should try to doinstead of just copy the original word-for-word.To all Scream fans who have counted down 362 days since the releasedate was announced, shouldn't be too disappointed here. 'Scream 4' is anice entry to my favorite movie series of all-time. The only problemsfans may run into when seeing Scream 4 is the new tone of the film. They skewed the tone of a Scream film and the tone of a regular teenslasher Hollywood would produce today; 10/10.

A sad day for slasher-evolution

A sad day for horror, and i believe this is the death of a franchise.Scream 1 is one of the coolest horror/slashers i have ever seen. It hadgood scares, good dialogue and not but least great humour. The second one i loved as well. Still going strong there Craven. Thethird one kinda dropped a bit, but still the same genre. Great cameosand still the humour there. PG-13 though, but it was okay then. I likedthe plot. For ten years i've been waiting to see the follow up. If Craven stillhas it. I see it with all the great directors nowadays. They can'tcompete with the fresh directors of the MTV generation. And it's sad tosay that Craven is one of those falling short. I'm still a huge fan,but maybe it's over? Scream 4 starts of with completely ridiculous dialogue between twouninteresting(hot though) girls discussing the "stab"-movies. And thisjust doesn't happen once. But twice! They're watching a movie, and theones that are watching that movie is also watching a movie. Moviewithin a movie within a movie. Hard to descbribe, but that's basicallyhow it goes. And this would be a cool twist about ten years ago. Now itjust feels stupid and outdated. The writer Kevin Williamson has lostwhat he had as a younger man. And the worst thing is really whenmiddle-aged men is writing dialogue for teenagers. Sometimes it works, but NOT this time. It seems they made this film as poorly as they havebecause they know people will watch it anyway. The quality don't meanbull-crap. Just make sure to have a kill here and there, and barf up asmany horror movie references you can, and you'll get the audience. That's to easy nowadays. And not clever at all. A few things while i remember them: -The first call between ghostfaceand Sidney. Ghostface says he has plans for Sidney, and aren't gonnakill her yet. Then two minutes go by and he almost kills her. Duhwinning? NOT! -The kills are shot poorly. What's scary about seeing in regularperspective ghostface sticking a knife in someone and holding it therefor way too long? Conclusion is that there wasn't one good kill in themovie.-People are dying all around, but these teenagers aren't affected by itat all! The thing with the first movies was that we loved thecharacters. And really didn't want them to die. In this one i can'twait for the whole bunch to just drop dead. They're acting isembarrassing, and the direction the same. Again i have to point out howhard this is for me to write. I'm a big fan and have been lookingforward to this movie for a long time. So my reason for writing this isbecause i feel betrayed by the people i have great respect for. There are talks about more films in the franchise. Please don'tgreen-light any more scream- movies. I can't take being hurt again bythe great people in Hollywood. Because if they make another i'm gonnawatch it anyway. And that's the problem with suckers like myself. Wewill watch the movie anyway. So please stop making them!I'm really sorry if this upsets, or offends anyone involved in themovie. I just had to get it off my chest. Now i'll probably cry alittle, then put on "the strangers" and get over it :)

Best entry in Scream since the first one

This definitely holds up as a good film and I don't think that couldhave been achieved if it wasn't for Wes Craven directing this one. Icould tell an experienced horror master did this one even though it wasthe same formula and not THAT much more can be done with the series.I'll start off with my criticisms. The modern day spin on everythingwith mentioning facebook and twitter and all the cell phones and modernday stuff was necessary but I think used a little too much. They shouldhave kept a more classic feel but I guess Scream movies revolve aroundthe times. With that aside it still had some great parts.Wes Craven did a great job of filming the Ghostface killer and just howbrutal he can be. There were some creepy parts with him in it thatreminded me of the creepy Halloween series. This is what sealed thefilm for me. Although, the phone call before every kill became overdonebut I guess that's just Ghostface killers thing. The twist was greatand really redeemed the film in my opinion. It turned into an almostmodern day giallo by the end. There were some pretty brutal parts withsome pretty bloody kills just as how I remember the ones in the 90s andso there was some definitely some nostalgia to be had here.I remember being terrified of the Ghostface mask back in the 90s when Iwas younger and so that really made me want to see this movie. Not tomention that I love what Wes Craven has done for the horror genre. Idon't want to give it away since its a repeated formula...but if youwant a solid modern day horror slasher film definitely see this. Theyshould definitely end the series here. Anymore after this will be totaloverkill. I'm never disappointed with Wes Craven directing.

Surprisingly good fourth entry

Directed By: Wes Craven Written By: Kevin Williamson Cast: NeveCampbell, David Arquette, Courtney Cox, Emma Roberts, HaydenPanettiere, Rory Culkin, Anthony Anderson, Marley Shelton, Alison Brie, and Erik Knudsen.Synopsis: Bodies start dropping when Sidney returns home to Woodsboroto promote her new book. This time, the Ghostface killer has his mindset on Sidney's entire family as well, including her teenage cousinJill. With the help of school's "Cinema Stab", Sidney, old friendsDewey and Gale, and a new generation of Woodsboro teens sought out toend Ghostface's attempt at creating a real life remake.Review: Series breaks another slasher movie cliché by creating a fourthstraight successful film. Williamson did a wonderful job at creating apurpose for the story, as well as creating some good takes on thecurrent state of Horror in Hollywood. The new generation of Woodsboroteens was fairly successful. I thought Hayden and the geeks Knudsen andCulkin did a great job in particular. And of course perennial survivorsNeve Campbell, David Arquette, and Courtney Cox did fine jobs as well.Movie did a great job of creating suspense and by the end you reallyhave no clue who's going to die and who isn't. The reveal of thekiller(s) was shocking and extremely psychotic. Series might never beas famous as 'Halloween' or 'A Nightmare on Elm Street', but thisfranchise might just beat them all.

Why is this being shown on cinema?

This movie should not be shown in movie theaters, it should be shown onTV. Everything about it looks old, recycled and just plain silly. Iknow a fun silly movie, this actually is not. I felt like the movie wassuffocating my movies taste, because it's just that old, the bad kindof old. The kind that does not challenge you, does not give you more, does not provide you with new ideas. Why would anyone be involved insuch a production in the 1st place? Has Hollywood seriously ran out ofideas this quick? I don't think so, there are many good movies outthere with fresh ideas, fresh look and fresh atmosphere. I absolutelydid not have fun during the movie, and I regret going there. I preferseeing Twilight instead of this so called "2011 movie", and this says alot considering the fact that twilight had only a good thing related toit which was its soundtrack. To whomever loves true cinema, to whoeverloves a decent cinematic experience, DO NOT go and see this movie! It'sa TRAP!! If you are a fan of the franchise, go see the older movies ofit, and save yourself the money to buy a sandwich that actuallyprovides you with a good taste.

OK but could be way better

Scream 4 was suppose to be a whole new thing. Not a good idea. Manypeople who have seen and liked the originals will not like this thatmuch. with me. I loved the originals but just thought this one was "tofar out". Among with previous screams it had some humors part to itwhich gives the movie more "life". They brought back some of theoriginal people from the previous movies. I was hoping to see an oldgeneration come to a new generation but it was the other way around itwas a new generation staying in a new generation. The originals werenot really in the movie. They did not have a big role in the movie. They focused too much on the teens in this movie. "New rules, Newgeneration". Terrible idea it was nothing but people giving us rulesthat the movie did not follow. The movie in fact had no rules what soever. The story line was to far out there. Too unexpected. The endingwas not good. It really did not follow the rest of the movie. I mean"how could they have done it". Made some sense if you did not thinkabout it. I would recommend waiting to DVD because the sound andvisuals were really not very good so your not missing anything intheaters. If you have liked previous screams this one could have beenbetter. To people who have liked this movie please watch the originalsand then make a review.

What a vomit

It is beyond limits of my understanding how anyone can even remotelylike this predictable, derivative, pathetic boredom extended beyond anylimit. I don't know why anyone may actually like this but well, maybethe scene where drunk youngsters seem to enjoy similar slasher mayhelp. I think it may take approximately six beers or one and halfbottle of wine to actually start to like this mess. Or about six shotsof whiskey, preferably administered in regular intervals to keep yourIQ and expectations reasonably low.The suffering would be more bearable if it would fit into say 75minutes. This would more than enough for all the new "twists, turns andjokes". The movie unfortunately spends almost two hours running incircles, repeating all the old clichés and adding one level offrustration over another one. Yes, we know from the start how this endsand we do know the killer is some unimportant clown with some absurdreasons. We know he will be eliminated, because it allows the series tocontinue in the same manner forever. The last "surprising set oftwists" in the hospital has been seriously unbearable for me.Someone may think that it is somewhat funny if the authors add all theclichés in the order you expect in advance. You may feel, well, as an"slasher expert". This may be amusing for someone, ideally with thebottle of alcohol at the party. But as a standalone "thriller" it failsmiserably - this "thriller" is not thrilling at all. It is just 2 hoursbig bag of old and boring tricks repeated again and again.

Wanted to like this but...uggh

I have to say that just getting through the final 20 minutes of Scream4 was pure torture. We get that the Scream franchise is all about self-reverential humor, but the phone device was so overdone that it just became annoying. Andeven with a filter, there is NO WAY that voice was produced by eitherof the 2 killers. But what really makes this film bad was the combination of having towatch Neve Campbell do this entire film in agony-face (she alwaysappears to be having cramps) and, even worse, listening to her nieceexplain why she chose to kill. It was thoroughly unbelievable.I won't bother rehashing that message here, but it is a sorry, cynicalstatement about the state of youth that Wes Craven is making. After therecent Norway slaughter it's not especially amusing.Additionally, knowing about the real-life breakup of Cox and Arquettemade their scenes especially painful to watch. Yet, they seemed to bereferencing it.Oh, one more thing. The killings are quite prolonged and violent. Whatit doesn't show in explicit gore, is more than made up for by extremelyloud shredding and ripping sounds. Not a great night of movie-watching.

a standout, in a bad way. I can't believe there are no 2/3 star reviews!

the problem with this movie is that the dialogue is so flat where theprevious films were crammed with humor the script of Scream 4 iswitless. There are exchanges like, He: "I'm gonna go outside and see what I Can find! She: "Be Careful!"He: "I'm always careful!- - - orWife: Dewey can u promise me one thing? d arquette: what honey wife:get that bastard dammit! D arquette: I will honey, I love you! wife: Ilove you!the whole thing is just blah, the characters are the weakest of any ofthe franchise. What's poignant about the film is seeing all these actors so much oldercast opposite mostly quite provocative looking young people. All ofthem look OK in most of their shots but then there are a few in whichthey look really haggard and it's sad to see. the big killer's motive is pretty insipid. these things matter! itaffects the entertainment value vastly to have a dumbbutt script!
