Fun and Unique

This review is from: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (DVD) Scott Pilgrim may not be for everyone, but I highly recommend that everyone should give it a look. I definitely haven't seen a movie like it before and totally loved it. It's a bit rushed, but it's understandable, since the movie crams about 7 volumes of a comic series into one movie. I enjoyed Scott Pilgrim so much that I actually went to see it three times in theaters. This was the only time I actually went to see a movie multiple times in theaters, since I'm way too cheap to pay $10 for a second viewing most of the time. Support Edgar Wright and see this film!

One of the best movies ever!!

This review is from: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) (Blu-ray) So underrated. I'm not going to give a movie review because if you are looking to buy this you've probably already seen it. It's the movie, in HD, with extras, YAY!!!

Warning--this may not play properly on some TVs/players

Don't get me wrong...SCOTT PILGRIM is easily a five-star movie, one of the best I've seen this year. But caveat emptor. The DVD and Blu-Ray will not play properly on all TVs and/or players. In some configurations, the text on the sides of the screen is cut off. It's most noticeable in the scene where Scott sits up in bed and the "Other Scott" sits up beside him. You can see that the text for "Other Scott" is cut-off; you can't read all of it.I have heard that Universal is supposedly issuing a corrected Blu-Ray in February 2011. I don't know about the DVD; I'd hope they'd fix that, too. I've e-mailed them and will let you know what they say.Meanwhile, proceed with caution, as you may not be able to watch the entire image. For that reason, I'm lowering my star rating, because I have a hard time believing that Universal couldn't reconfigure this disc to fix the problem.

Not familiar with the graphic novel, but found the movie very enjoyable

I've never read the graphic novel that this movie is based on, but Ilike Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and thought I'd give it a shot since shewas in it. I also saw a clip she brought from the movie on a talk showand found it to be intriguing. Although I don't know that I laughedearly in the movie, I thought all of it was interesting and once I wasdrawn into this world, I laughed hard. It has a clever and entertainingblend of real-life with well-timed sound effects and visuals from comicbooks, classic video games and includes some impressive over-the-topMartial Arts. If those things don't sound fun to you, you may not enjoythis movie, but I found it to be a very pleasant surprise.

Unique

This review is from: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (DVD) Cute movie, was impressed by the unique style of the film. Liked the comic book flare and video game references.

Ultimate geek fantasy

After seeing this movie I just had to read all 6 volumes of the comicthis movie is based on. I must say I liked the comic a bit more sincethe movie didn't have some of the good parts in the comic. But that isunderstandable and this movie really is a very good adaptation. Thismovie is very unique and really got the essence of the comic and thevibe as well. I heard Edgar Wright made a lot of effort and time inmaking this film and Bryan Lee O'Malley even pitched in and helped withcertain scenes and it was worth the effort and time. I personally thinkto get the most out of this movie, watch this movie first beforereading the comic. Although, like I said the comic seemed to be a bitbetter but the movie does things in a way where some of the wittydialogue and direction that isn't in the comic gives a lot of flare tothis movie. Maybe it's just the slightly different approach in certainangles and parts of the film, the humor in this is done better than thecomic itself. This is probably one of the best video game style movie Ihave ever seen and it's not even based on a real video game althoughthat game after the movie. Edgar Wright did a fantastic job with thismovie and hit the mark almost entirely. Fans of the comic this movie isbased on won't be disappointed, it might even surpass most people'sexpectations. Sometimes pop culture references doesn't work in moviessometimes but it worked just fine in this one, especially about the waycertain group of people dress, mainly hipsters. The constant thingshappening in the background was interesting as well, even if it wasrandom or didn't make much sense. My favorite Ex's out of the sevenScott has to fight is the two superheroes, Superman and CaptainAmerica...Yeah it's a lame joke but those two actors was veryentertaining to watch and seemed to be enjoying themselves. What isreally shocking is how this movie has like seven villains in one moviebut it still works really well and doesn't fall short of almostanything. I think this 2 movies might have worked better in order toget more of the stuff in the comics in movie form. Like the first moviewould be called "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" and the second movie toend it all be called "Scott Pilgrim vs. the Universe". Anyways overallthis is one of the best movies of 2010 and is highly worth checkingout.8.6/10

A sleeper with lame humor

I don't fall asleep in the theater. This movie is a real sleeper. The plot is pretty basic and will appeal to young video game playing nerds who fantasize about what life would be like if they lived in a video game world and could carry over their video game skills into the real world... oh, and that girls actually paid any attention to them. If you don't fall into this category, skip it.

This does not Kick Ass!

This is one of those movies I read about a lot. Also it's one of thosemovies I really wanted to see badly. But in the end it became one ofthose movies that I turned off after 37 minutes of watching. It was just too hectic, but yet so very boring movie. Oh my god! Therewas a bunch of totally annoying pricks as leads, there was a loveinterest who was just too obnoxious to be even cute... there was a mainstar, Scott that is, who was just lifeless piece of human creature... aShaggy in disguise...OK, OK, I don't know if it's fair to rate or review a movie if one hasseen only 37 minutes of it, but after all it does say something aboutthe movie itself, doesn't it.I hear lots of praises, lots of wowzas about Scott Pilgrim against theworld, but I am left with a feeling that most of those people arereally young. So it's a movie aimed at younger population who grew upwatching flashy MTV videos and always insanely hectic NationalGeographic documentaries...If you liked Kick Ass, that doesn't mean you will love this one, because in fact this does not Kick Ass.P.S. The only surprise of this movie was Kieran Culkin.

Tragic

I will firstly say i had never read the book or comic or whatever itwas prior to seeing this movie and i went to see it on therecommendation that it was a refreshing teen comedy like nothing seenbefore.I'm glad i had never seen anything like it before or after, i canhonestly say that it is the worst film i have ever seen in my life andprobably the worst i ever will see. I can deal with strange films thatare at least entertaining with some good characters. This, however, didnot in any way allow engagement with the unbelievable characters andinstead left me detached and outraged at such a dire storyline. It features a regular (ish) boy who manages to find himself not onlywith two girlfriends since he seems too pathetic to tell either of thembut also having to fight off a number of evil ex's in a comicbook/video game/power rangers style set of battles which occurcompletely out of the blue, almost as if the developers forgot theyweren't designing a video game. That's as far as i care to explain theplot as there really is nothing else to it. For anyone obsessed withterrible corny Teen dramas and Tekken with a slight flavour of Pokemoni guess it would be a dream come true. I'm not trying to have a go at the many users who have rated this movieso high and have indeed reviewed it so positively but i just don'tunderstand the attraction. I feel the same way Tom Hanks did in Bigwhen he made the insightful comment: "I don't get it".I would not see this movie again even if you paid me and it is the onlyfilm in which i wanted to walk out of the cinema, demand my money back, and forget i ever saw it. Truly the worst film i have ever seen, not entertaining or funny butpointless and immature; thus i don't feel i can recommend this film toany audience. would give it 0 if i could.

Great off-beat action-comedy for classic video game fans

The movie's hero is a 22 year old bum in a band -- not quite the anti-hero, but not far from it either. This movie follows him in pursuit of his dream girl while dealing with various obstacles, such as the obligations of his band, a high-school girl stalker, and 7 evil exes of his dream girl. Despite the impossible world he lives in, he is likable, you can always sympathize with him, and manages to make all the crazy situations and environments believable. The connoisseur of old video games will be overcome by nostalgia. The graphical presentations are almost comic-book like. While a martial artist might criticize the fights as being executed unrealistically, they are well executed choreographically, will remind you of Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and Mario Brothers. Much of the music, especially during the conflicts, will remind you of video game music from the 80's. Despite this, it all works very well together. The movie is very clever and funny. It is not serious, but the characters believe it is. It is complex enough that you will catch more humor the second time you watch it.While I loved the movie, it won't appeal to most people that don't play video games.

Scott Pilgrim is here to make you sad and think about death and stuff!

This review is from: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) (Blu-ray) Simply one of the best movies ever released. If you are part of the "Nintendo" generation or just a lazy kid at heart, you will love this movie. Also, the Blu-ray is incredible. I would imagine they crammed each disc to the brim just to fit everything in there.

Scott Pilgrim delivers!

After seeing an advance screening of the film tonight, Scott Pilgrim isdefinitely one of the funniest movies of 2010 and one of the mostexciting. Being a huge fan of the series, I was excited to see how itturned out and I was not disappointed. Michael Cera plays the role ofScott Pilgrim perfectly as does every actor in the film. The only flawis that anyone who is unfamiliar with video game and comic culture maynot enjoy the film as much as those who are familiar. But thatshouldn't deter everyone from at least checking out the series andgiving it a shot. When the film receives its theatrical release August13th, I will definitely see the movie again!

Weird, but fun.

I bought "Scott Pilgrim vs The World" for my wife's birthday monthsago, following a great review of the film by Mark Kermode (who wegenerally find has taste that matches ours). We didn't watch the filmuntil last night (seven months after it was bought), and I'm quitedisappointed that we didn't find time for it earlier. This is a verygood movie! The main characters are quite sympathetically drawn (withthe possible exception of Knives, who is sidelined too much until shehas such an important role in the story), but with flaws which makethem three-dimensional (quite impressive for a film derived from acomic-book!) I am very impressed with Kieran Culkin's acting - I don'tthink I've seen him in anything else. As a character, Ramona Flowers isseriously hot - very sexy, strong and vulnerable all at once.I missed many of the video-game references, never having the patienceto play them, but it didn't affect the film from my point of view. However, I am a bit concerned about the casual acceptance of having tokill previous partners in order to become the next partner. My wifethinks that is an allegory for what actually happens in a relationship, but I just don't get it. It seems needlessly brutal, since there is noindication that the deaths are metaphorical (once the basic premises ofthe film are accepted, so that these people really can fight likevideo-game characters). Let's face it, Scott does not know any of theexes, yet he he puts a great deal of effort into killing them for hisown benefit. He could have walked away at any time, as I understood theplot, and the remaining evil exes would have left him alone.Overall, an 8 out of 10n, because it was well-made movie with somegreat acting, but the basic premise leaves me a bit uncomfortable.

BUY THIS MOVIE!

This review is from: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (DVD) It is a darn shame that a movie this good should have had such a lackluster run at the box office. On the surface it probably appealed to a rather narrow target audience, but that would be wrongly judging a book by its cover. Some reviews said that only teens and early-20-somethings would like this, but I'm 34 and I love it. It is still a solid movie that deserves more credit--in box office receipts and critical acclaim--that it got.If you read or at least skim the graphic novels by O'Malley, you will like the fact that the movie adheres to the books closely. For some graphic novels this is a curse but for "Scott Pilgrim" it is a good thing (plug for books). The music in here is awesome (plug for soundtrack). Plus, I think asian chicks are H-O-T, and Ellen Wong is very easy to look at.My one reservation is that, while I like Michael Cera's downbeat acting style and pretty much own everything he's starred in, he isn't the ideal actor for this role. The books have a Scott who's more assertive while Michael Cera's portrayal is anything but (except for the fight scenes--here he kicks butt). My vote: get this movie, and don't let it collect dust on your shelf.

A hilarious/awesome/intriguing movie

Though this film is clearly meant for viewers of the generation ofvideo games and crazy, whacked out anime, I felt that of the dozens (ifnot hundreds) of comedy movies I have seen it has a sensibility ofstorytelling not found in the general comedy genre. This laudable usageof strong thematic connections, when added to the eye-popping visualeffects and clever camera work (including some inventive cuts thatfluidly transition the action of the film throughout its manylocations), makes for an exciting and surprisingly fulfilling moviethat manages to perfectly blend video game classics and clichés, musicallusions, and almost non-stop comedy together in such a way that itstill manages to tell a good story that is not as dumb and flighty asthe vast majority of comedies. Overall, I have to give it the level ofrespect I would normally never grant to comedies.

Get pummeled with awesomeness

Edgar Wright is fanboy gold. Shaun of the Dead proved that he was adirector to watch and Hot Fuzz showed that he had a bit more up hissleeve. So what happens when Wright branches out to comic fare withoutthe help of his regulars? We get a film that is nonstop entertainmentdone in a way that only Wright can. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World isunique to its very core, the fact that it's also well done andenjoyable is icing on that one-of-a-kind cake.Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) is a 22-year-old Toronto slacker. When heisn't practicing with his band, he is hanging out with his 17-year-oldgirlfriend Knives Chau (Ellen Wong). Everything is business as usualuntil Scott sees the literal girl of his dreams, Ramona Flowers (MaryElizabeth Winstead). Scott quickly discovers that being with Ramonaisn't as easy as he thought. While dealing with an unclear relationshipwith Knives he must face off against Ramona's seven evil exes. The casting of this film is inspired. For all those that have growntired of Michael Cera I urge you to go see this film. At the surfaceScott Pilgrim is yet another awkward young man that you've seen Cera dobefore, but he finds a way to dig deeper into the character. Scott is aflawed individual and Cera is able to communicate these flaws withoutnegating the charm that is at the character's core. It is a toughperformance to describe, since it is simultaneously similar to hisprior roles while also being quite a bit more complex. TechnicallyMichael Cera is the lead, however very few scenes are all his own.Nearly every supporting actor is able to steal at least one scene. FromKieran Culkin as Wallace to Johnny Simmons as Young Neil, there was notone actor that I tired of. I found myself wishing the film could belonger simply so I could have more time to get to know all of the othercharacters. Anna Kendrick is sweet and smarmy as Scott's little sister,Aubrey Plaza is endearing as the overworked and unappreciated JuliePowers and Ellen Wong manages to sidestep the chasm of annoyance asKnives Chau. Then there are the seven evil exes who you should hate butjust can't. In short, if the saying "you're only as strong as yourweakest link" is true, then this cast is a diamond chain. The story is fantastic, if a bit simplistic. Bryan Lee O'Malley hascreated a world that is both ridiculous and relatable. The film is asmuch a character piece as it is an action film. The writing is able toexamine the complications that come with relationships at a young age.Scott is a selfish individual that pays little notice to the effect hisdecisions have on those around him. Ramona has led a life of regret andis constantly running from a past that will not let her escape. Thecharacters and story are complex enough that you will be surprise tosee them following you out of the theater. The reason the film is able to work is Edgar Wright. I cannot imaginethis film in any other director's hands. Some have described Wright'sstyle as customized for the "ADD generation" but I believe this isborderline insulting. While he does utilize several fast cuts and thefilm has very few moments that do not cruise by, I believe this isnecessary. A comic book does not contain several solemn moments ofreflection and as such, a film based on a comic book should not either.I was shocked to realize that the film is close to two hours long sinceit seemed to clip by at such a fast pace. I may be a bit bias sincethis film seems to be customized to me. I grew up with my Sega Genesisat my side and a television nearby. Due to this, I found all of thevideo game and television inflections to be a delight. These referencesare in no way a distraction, simply a fantastic supplement. If thesound of the Sonic the Hedgehog theme brings a big smile to your face, then this film is just for you.Comic book films have become pretty commonplace. Scott Pilgrim vs. theWorld may not be a Marvel or DC film, but it manages to feel much morelike a comic book than any film since Sin City. Wright shoots for themoon when it comes to staying true to his source and I am glad he did.The screen oozes comic charm and this allows for the intense fights andstylized musical numbers to feel completely authentic. I believe that acomic should only be transitioned to the screen if something more canbe added to the experience in the process. I have only read portions ofthe Scott Pilgrim comic, but when it comes to the film, I would beelated to sit down and experience it all over again. With this film, Edgar Wright completes a hat trick of memorable fare.Bryan Lee O'Malley has created a story that we've seen before in a waythat is completely unique. Wright is able to take O'Malley's fantasticstory and transition it beautifully to the screen. Every member of thecast is fantastic; I only wish that each actor had more time on screen. With so many comic book films feeling obligated to be rooted less inthe fantastic and more in the real, it is nice to a see a comic bookfilm that embraces its roots. The strong comic book style, coupled withvideo game accents, results in a film that is never boring. ScottPilgrim vs. the World will make you laugh and yearn for young love, allwhile pummeling you with its awesomeness.

High Score. (Yeah, I had to)

I don't even know where to begin raving about this movie. Scott PilgrimVs The World is one of the best movies of 2010. Here's why.I went into this movie knowing nothing about it except from seeingtrailers and short clips. I hadn't read the comics or anything.Needless to say, I've now gone and read through them and while somepeople say that this movie doesn't hold a candle to the comics, I'mgoing to have to disagree. Unlike the Harry Potter films which are moreof a companion to the novels than stand-alone films, Scott Pilgrim VsThe World can be viewed with no prior knowledge and still be enjoyedimmensely. While certain plot points are skimmed over or cutcompletely, it doesn't detract from the final product.Scott Pilgrim is a love story. With fights. Edgar Wright described itas a musical, but instead of breaking into song, the characters breakinto fights. That's a pretty good description in my opinion. To be withthe girl of his dreams, Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) must fight - no,defeat - Ramona Flowers' (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) 7 evil exes. Whatfollows is a film filled with life and energy and brilliance.I'm a huge Edgar Wright fan, he's one of my favourite directors (Shaunof the Dead, Hot Fuzz). The cinematography in Scott Pilgrim Vs TheWorld is so well done that you'll come out of the cinema buzzing. Theediting of shots seamlessly really puts you in the zone. Even the rapidfight scenes that have new shots every few seconds never make you feeldisoriented like in movies such as Transformers, where it's just 5minutes of robots fighting each other in a blurry mess of steel.Maybe for a viewer who isn't 17 like me, the bright colours and videogames references might not do much for them, but for someone who hasgrown up with video games and comic books, this movie was so good. Andit wasn't just cheap shots either. There was no "Oh look! Now we'reputting in a sound clip from Zelda. Intertextuality for the win!" No.It was done so subtly and reflected the film, the dream sequenceparticularly standing out for me, but I won't say any more for thosewho haven't seen it. The start of each fight with the 'VS' in betweenthe characters and all the tiniest sound effects was enough to makethis another great piece by Edgar Wright. The sheer number of TheLegend of Zelda references alone was enough to win me over.I want to talk briefly about the soundtrack and score. The soundtrackis filled with some great songs that really fit the feel of the movie -the pure acoustic guitar and the 8 bit elements are pure brilliance. This is also reflected in the score, a more dramatic set of music butstill retaining the retro video game feel that really pushes this filmalong.Michael Cera, who doesn't seem to age at all, gets a refreshing newrole as Scott Pilgrim, and for once doesn't get to be 'that awkwardguy' but rather 'that jerk who fights everyone for one girl'. He stillretains his Cera-esque charm in the movie but it's great to see himbecome a bit of a badass. His supporting cast is fantastic as well, special credit goes to Kieran Culkin, Allison Pill and Chris Evans. Those three to me were absolutely hilarious, their comedic timingperfect. In fact, the whole cast does a flawless job of creating agreat character list who connect with each other without stilteddialogue or awkward phrasing. This film is so energetic and fun and re-watchable. From every crunchof a fist against a skull to every perfectly delivered punchline, itremains one of the best films of 2010 that should really have donebetter at the box office considering the reception it's received.10/10

This Movie Blew My Mind!

I'm not much for reviews so I will keep it short. See this movie! I am surprised to see that it had failed so bad at the theaters. I have never anything like this movie and if you haven't seen it you haven't either. This movie has so much eye candy flashing throughout I thought I would have a seizure. The dude from Superbad seriously kicks butt, and it just as hilarious in a more intelligently witty way. I have seen it twice, and cant wait for a chance to watch it again to add stuff to my list of things I thoroughly enjoyed about this movie. Buy it, and tell your friends. I would love to see a sequel to this and Kick Ass then I think I could die a happy man.

Awesome experience!!!

I went to see this movie with my family this weekend. OH... MY... GOD!I frickin LOVE it!!! I think I'll look back on it as THE best cinemaexperience I've had since I saw Star Wars in 1977! Yeah, there havebeen many awesome films over the years, but as far as the entireexperience, this was so double rainbow awesome that totally beats them.In a sea of 3D, this one that dares to remain flat really pops. Howcool is that? I had a smile on my face from the moment it started untilI was well out of the theatre. Going in I didn't really know what toexpect because I avoided the hype as much as I could. Hell, it was anEdgar Wright film, I knew it wasn't going to disappoint, but I didn'twant to be over excited and have it be a let down of sorts. I was blownaway!
