Scooby-Doo! and the Monster of Mexico

Sooner or later, the Mystery, Inc. gang had to take on Mexicos legendary Bigfoot equivalent, El Chupacabra, and thats precisely what they do in this entertaining, feature-length, Scooby-style investigation into the paranormal. Taking the Mystery Van south of the border, Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy, and Scooby-Doo celebrate Day of the Dead festivities, which become less festive when a towering, glowering Chupacabra monster turns up to terrify both tourists and locals. The young snoops smell a conspiracy, and as they chase down clues their search for the truth leads them into sundry Mexican antiquities--ancient tombs and temples--where danger increases exponentially. There are the usual rituals Our time-warped heroes run like the wind during encounters with alleged ghouls--particularly best-buds Shaggy and Scooby, when they arent stuffing themselves with delicious Scooby Snacks. The animation is slicker and smoother--and more pleasing--than some other, recent Scooby-Doo features.

A Decent Reunion At Best

The best way to begin is to show you where I stand. I think "Zombie Island" and "The Witch's Ghost" were excellent. I didn't much care for "Alien Invasion" or "Cyber Chase." I thought "The Legend of the Vampire" was a surprisingly good return to form. Onto chapter six. I can't really say this is one of Scooby's better movies. It kind of lacks the punch and surprises of "Zombie Island" and "The Witch's Ghost." Instead of the scarey surprises seen in the first two movies, this 6th chapter seems to rely more on silly chases. (But if you like the original episodes, you probably won't mind that so much.) Also, in my opinion, the script is weaker which means the movie seems very long and drawn out. ("Zombie Island" and "Witch's Ghost" don't seem to have many dull moments at all.) And, I won't say too much here, but when the mystery is uncovered and you really didn't get to know the culprit in the first place, a certain edge is missing. (In "Zombie Island" and "Witch's Ghost," we got to know the culprits very well in the 1st half of the movie, and therefore, there was a scarey sense of recognition when the plots were uncovered. The main reason I can give to watch this movie is that it was at least nice to the original line up from the early cartoons (Casey Kasem-Shaggy, Frank Welker-Fred, Heather North-Daphne, and Nicole Jaffee-Velmah) together again. The movie is worth some interest, but it's more of a long episode. If you like Scooby, this movie is watchable. But, don't expect the terror, intensity, and suspense of "Zombie Island," "The Witch's Ghost," or even "Legend of the Vampire."

Scooby Doo Rocks

This New Scooby-Doo movie rocks. The plot is great! Scooby even gets a little romance in Mexico, with a chiwuawau. You get to see into the individual houses of the Mystery Inc. gang and they chat together. The characters are all voiced by the original cast members except for Scooby who is voiced by Frank Welker. The mystery has a few little twists, but not as many and so confusing as Legend of the Vampire. Daphne even gets captured, which I really liked because that is like classic Scooby. There is even a gag reference to Legend of the Vampire when they run by a theater which is showing the movie. This movie is worth buying.

Scooby Doo and the Monster of Mexico is an entertaining movie forchildren. For young children I recommend parental supervision for thescary parts. My Daughter Julia was watching a Scooby Doo movie and thenwent to play a video game on the computer saying tell me when themonsters come back in the movie Daddy. Children are tougher than someparents realize. To my real Daughter in a real Moonfleet orbiting EarthYahweh Apophis greetings and Loving salutations as the Roman Empireleaders used to say to each other. You are a remarkable thinker but Iwould still love you no matter what you were like my Daughter. Arriba!

This movie really get people dancing. Scooby and the gang are headingout to Mexico. Where there will be a Fiesta, that gets spoiled by achupacabra(Goat sucker). To me, this creature resemble the Jaguaro, andI think they oughta done better. The adventure beings all good, andnothing seems to be lost in every way. A little lady dog seem to haveeyes for Scooby. However, any lady dog will take Scooby seriously. Theother cast like Charlene was a shady character from the beginning. Shewas always spilling the beans, coffee beans to be exact. And the robotcharacters in the theme park had all the tourists fooled. Wheneverything went well, it was back to the fiesta, and who would knowthat Shaggy would take the lead. Just like any other Scooby-Doocartoon, this movie is still the gem. You can learn some Spanish, solvealong with the gang, and eat. I don't care what the critics think, Ienjoyed this movie from day one! Rating 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Kids Love It!!!

As a huge die hard SD fan myself, I was so excited when I showed my 3 and 6 yr olds an "old" SD show and they absolutely loved it!!! I was afraid it might be to scary for them, but no, it it the ONE show they constantly agree on! My best memories of tv childhood were watching any and all SD shows...I've seen them all, my favs are the oldies...Sonny and Cher, Mama Cass, etc. We own all of the new generation SD films, Whats New Scooby Doo, the Cartoon Network ones, Scooby Doo 1 and 2, etc., Monster of Mexico included. My kids love them, which makes me sooo happy, just glad the younger ones love SD as much as I did, lol. Their fav by far is Monster of Mexico, don't know why, they just love "El Chupacabra"...so much so that once a month or so, the kids and I have "Mexican Night." I make tacos, we watch Monster of Mexico, play a couple of games, and have a "sleepover" where we sleep downstairs on the pull out couch. I just can't believe that SD created so many memories/good times for me as a child, and still many years later (I'm 31 now) does the same for my kids! We Love Scooby Dooby Dooooo!!!!! :)

This is no time to be chicken

Well I have to say that this Scooby-Doo cartoon although far from thegreatest its also far from the worst. This cartoon definitely brought asmile to my face. It was funny, smart, but it could also get confusing,I often found myself lost near the middle and end of the movie. I foundthere were many funny jokes and many unfunny jokes, many smart twistsand turns and many predictable twists and turns, but overall a goodmystery, but many points during the middle and end its gets confusing.Fred informs his friends that one of his best friends tells him thatthis a great time to travel to Mexico. Quickly after hearing the greatnews Scooby along with Fred, Shaggy, Velma, and Daphne hurry to packtheir bags and are fast on their way to beautiful Mexico. Velma tellsthe gang that they will be there in time to attend the annual day ofthe dead, of course Scooby-Doo and shaggy are terrified. When theyarrive in Mexico the gang hears a creepy story of El Chupacapra thathas been terrorizing the town. After coming face to face with ElChupacapra decide they have a case on their hands. Along the way thegang is met with funny and unfunny gags, clever twists and turns andpredictable twists and turns, and a confusing middle and end, but bythe time its over you will still have a smile on your face. The plot and setting are now once again like the original styleScooby-Doo where the villain turns out to be a man in a mask. This typeof plot and setting I find gives the old feeling back of when I used towatch the old TV show, while I will always like when they use realmonsters I always like the original way more. The storyline the movie follows is not bad, its far from the best butstill enjoyable. While the movie offers many funny Scooby-Doo gags butalso gives some unfunny ones. The movie does get confusing near themiddle and end while it is a good twist it can still be confusing.Once again this Scooby-Doo cartoon has an all star voice cast such as:Frank Welker as Scooby-Doo and Fred, Heather North as Daphne, NicoleJaffe as Velma, and of course Casey Kasem as Shaggy. Each voice actordoes a great job as the character they are voicing.By the time this cartoon is over I still had a smile on my face. Ifound that you either like this cartoon or you don't like this cartoon,it is in the middle. There could be many improvements but there arealso aspects that just cant get any better. I would have liked to haveseen more of El Chupacapra during the movie. This cartoon will never becalled one of the best but it will definitely never be called one ofthe worst as it is an enjoyable cartoon but an enjoyable one that couldbe just a little bit better. So you may want to read some of thereviews to this cartoon before making your decision on buying orrenting it, but for this movie you should make the decision yourselfbecause you either take or leave this Scooby-Doo adventure.Overall rating: ****** out of ********** *** out of *****

Scooby Doo Flies High

Kids loved this one. Catchy music, lovely Mexican setting, several character who seem "suspicious" when scary things start happening. The flying statues scene from the ruins kind of confused my kids, but added to the mystery - did the statues really come to life or was it another trick? (the mystery is solved in the end) Scooby Doo and his crew have endured since my childhood and their newer movies are still entertaining for kids today.

Vera Cruz and Mexico City Views by Scooby and the Gang

This review is from: Scooby-Doo and the Monster of Mexico (DVD) We (spouse and children and I) just viewed this DVD tonight and are extremely pleased. The familiar "bad-guy-caught-at-the-end" format is used as well as the typical Scooby Doo format of mishaps with the Mystery Machine, food-hungry Scooby & Shaggy, red herrings, ballads, etc. plus a very mild love-interest for Scooby. The clothes and vocals are just like the original series, too. What really caught our attention was the similar style to the original televsion series when Scooby and the gang visited various locations and learned things about the places they visited. Having visited Vera Cruz and Mexico City, we were struck by the similarities with the cartoon animation of Vera Cruz and Mexico City. We were also pleased to see Mexico/Mexicans portrayed in a positive way rather than as sterotypes.-There is even some basic Spanish used in a way to educate youngsters. The cupacabra (evil monster/ goatsucker) which frightened tourists from Vera Cruz was a bit dated, but caused us to recall the scare which griped Mexico a few years ago.We liked the voices and animation and were pleased to see the familar format of catching the bad guys in the end ("those meddeling kids"...) unlike some other recent Scobby DVD's where the monsters/witches are real. The cultural nuances and theme of "things are not always the way the seem" was also educational. The only negative about this DVD is that the languages are English and French with Spanish available only in subtitles. One would think the title would suggest a DVD with vocals in Spanish...

Seething mad at this film...

Following a torrent of scooby movies to be released on video and DVD comes "Scooby-Doo an the Monster of Mexico," a film that highlights the legend of El Chupacabre, the Mexican Bigfoot. All the same, the Legend of the Vampire totally insulted the vampire myth, and so I didn't expect this new one to be any different. For that reason, I waited until it was being played on the cartoon network before watching...Scooby-Doo and the Monster of Mexico Here's how it ranked...Sound: 3.5/5Like Legend of the Vampire, this movie used a lot of the songs from the original series, and a few new ones, but unlike Legend of the Vampire, the original songs in this series were stereotypical to the point of being annoying. Hence the additional half-point down from that film.Graphics: 3/5The same grade that I gave the graphics in "Legend of the Vampire" and for the same reasons. This movie uses graphics that were just not as good as they could, or logically should have been, and were barely even better than those seen in the original series.Story Concept: 3/5Slightly less cheesy than the concept in Legend of the Vampire, but no less cynical towards the supernatural. Scooby and the gang visit Mexico for no real reason except to be in time for a mexican halloween, where they encounter El Chupacabre, and find out that there's a plot brewing. But as in the last movie, and the series, there were no real monsters. This creature was really just some woman in an animatronic suit. That was annoying, and I'm glad I didn't spend any money on it for that reason alone.Story Presentation: 3/5Similar to Legend of the Vampire in presentation, cause and resolution, except that the pleasing scenes of Daphne and Velma hanging out as they did in that movie were dropped in favor of scenes of the entire gang as stereotypical (and somewhat insulting) mexican tourists. Like in Legend of the Vampire, there is no real monster, but to make things even worse, Velma makes some comments near the end about monster stories that really cheezed me off. Her acts of superhuman strength in mid-movie were balanced off by the fact that they spent that whole section of the film getting chased my monstrous stone statues and tourists; a part which had nothing to do with the rest of the movie, and was seemingly added just to extent the length. The words of many of the bit-part characters got on my nerves too. I simply found the movie distasteful. Yes, it's scooby, and like Legend of the Vampire, it's funny scooby material, but it was presented too much like an episode of the series, and not enough like something worth making a movie over.Acting: 5/5Perfect grade here, because who plays Velma, Shaggy, Daphne and Freddy like their original voice actors? Like in Legend of the Vampire, the original actors returned, but again, it's a shame they had to pick a film like this to lend their voices to.All in All: 3.5/5I enjoyed this movie more than alien invaders, but less than Legend of the Vampire, because honestly, Legend of the Vampire at least had A LITTLE nostalgia to it and didn't go overboard into cheesy behavior and unforgivable puns like this movie does. However, this movie had no thrills at all, and was really just a silly little romp through a country which was, at best, a caricature of a real one. Frankly, I wanted more from Scooby, but it would be a lie to say I had EXPECTED more. This film is most comparable to Legend of the Vampire in general mood, pace and result, but it's sillier and less respectful, so if that's your cup of tea, have a ball. Otherwise, you may join me in a boycott of this movie. Toodles.

Terrific Scooby Doo Movie

I got this for my 3 year old SD fan. He loves it and has enjoyed it consistently over the many times he's viewed it. The plot may be a little thin for the older set, the chase scene was pretty wild and out-in-left-field, but the animation, music, and portrayal of Mexican culture was great. What matters most is, it's kids movie and my kids love it. If your child or children are rabid Scooby Doo fans like mine, this is a worthwhile investment.

Great songs!

This review is from: Scooby-Doo and the Monster of Mexico (Amazon Instant Video) This is a very good Scooby Doo story, with really good songs. And the Mexican characters are voiced by alot of Spanish-speaking actors.

2012-04-12 20:39:52

Scooby-Doo is a child's video hero.

I, for one, am glad that they keep making Scooby-Doo movies. The old stuff is still fun to watch and the new ones are great for me and my nearly 3 year old son. I have to admit though, El Chupacabra from this movie and the ghosts from The Boo Brothers is scary for my son to watch at nighttime so I don't offer it as a choice at night. In this day and age of foul mouths and violence on TV, I am glad to offer Scooby-Doo as a choice for my son.

RENT THIS MOVIE

I love scooby so a wise word of advice: RENT THIS MOVIE. You will fall in love with it for a while and then never watch it again. I still love this movie but i can tell that most people would get bored after a little.

one of our favorites

One of the best scooby do movies. My kids like this one and the Lochness monster the best.

Not the best... or the worst

This movie had a lot going for it. The voice cast, sound effects andsmoother animation felt more like the original Scooby Doo and Iappreciated the classic feel. I really liked that Scott Innes was notvoicing Shaggy. Velma is good for relating some good Mexican history. The behind-the-scenes, blooper reel and cast commentary on the DVD aregreat! There were definitely parts where the plot was interesting and alot of vintage Shaggy/Scooby comedy that made us all laugh. That being said, the plot didn't hold together very well for me.Somewhere in the middle, things get a little TOO confusing andfar-fetched, even for Scooby. The story seems to slow down and thenjump ahead making the movie lurch along awkwardly. Daphne's voice seemsslow and... old! The dialog really dragged in parts. The extracharacters didn't have much personality or add interest to the movie, they were just... there.Overall the movie was OK and my kids enjoy it now and then. Not thegreatest... but pretty good.
