Mixed Feelings

I had mixed feelings on this one 1) Having Jim Belushi, Jay Leno, WayneKnight, Lauren Bacall, Wallace Shawn and "witches ghost" return of TimCurry was a plus. Oh to hear Tim's laugh!!!! 2) The fairies, pumpkin, and broom picked up things when the story was dragging. 3) The storywas mostly Shaggy and Scooby who couldn't carry it alone. 4) The songswere mostly forgettable. 5) the attempt to return to old style ScoobyDoo was a plus 6) The story didn't really care to follow the plot andbecame a series of unconnected scenes. The end seemed rushed 7) Thelack of Velma was deafening. 8) Daphne getting wet was unforgivable :-)At the end of the day, it was fun to watch but forgettable after a fewdays.

***Scooby and the Gang are B*A*C*K!!

SCOOBY-DOO AND THE GOBLIN KING DVD is a feature length movie of Scooby and the Mystery Inc. gang.I'm pretty sure that this is a new film since I can't find any information for a previous release date. Anyway, the cast includes the original voice of "Fred" (Frank Welker, who also does the voice of "Scooby") and the original voice of "Shaggy"--the great Casey Kasem. Also returning in their respective roles from the What's New, Scooby-Doo? - The Complete First Season is Grey Delisle as "Daphne" and Mindy Cohn as "Velma" who sound almost like the actors who voiced the characters in the original Scooby Doo, Where Are You! - The Complete First and Second Seasons series. And there are plenty of guest-star voices too including Lauren Bacall, Wayne Knight (Newman on "Seinfeld") and Tim Curry. This cartoon centers mostly on Scooby and Shaggy who get teleported to the "Spirit World" where they must get the goblin scepter before an evil magician steals it and turns everyone on earth into Halloween monsters. Fred, Daphne and Velma are at the beginning and end of the movie, so the format is a little different then the regular series which usually centers on the gang and switches back and forth between Scooby and Shaggy, and Fred and the girls, when they get separated.Another departure from the norm is that the stuff is really happening (i.e. real magic, real fairies and real goblins), unlike the tv show where it was a criminal disguised as an evil monster or supernatural being, so it's similar to Scooby-Doo! And the Witch's Ghost. I know some adults seem to have a problem with this, but the kids will have a ball watching the movie. After all it is a CARTOON people! There are a lot of Disney spoofs in this movie and it never really get's too scary. The only special features is a magician who will show you how to do some magic tricks. I recommend it to Scooby and Mystery Inc. fans of all ages!

Scooby humor, but not a Scooby ending

We have a bit of a Scooby-Doo fixation in my house; my daughter (6) and son (nearly 3) both adore the new movies, and we've streamed them as they've been available on Netflix. Now that Netflix is getting stingy with our queue, I'm looking to add some of these newer moview to our collection. This one, however, I won't buy. While the humor is smart, and like the classic shows, covers range from the zany/silly to the smart/sly, the ending of this one was simply unacceptable. One of the reasons my husband and I both love Scooby for the kids is its emphasis on skepticality (hooray for Velma!). This movie went to completely different territory, treating the supernatural as if it were actually there. In other words, it simply wasn't a Scooby-Doo storyline. There was no rational explanation and guy in a mask muttering about "those darned kids and their dog" at the end. I'll pass, thanks; if I want my kids' heads filled with nonsense, there are plenty of other choices out there.

Scooby Doo and The Headless Horseman

Any DVD that has Scooby-Doo and the Headless Horseman in it has got to be good!I want to see the gang go to Sleepy Hollow for an entire feature length "Scooby-Doo Meets the Headless Horseman" movie! I love that this movie is set near Halloween, because that is when Scooby and his Pals are at their best.Although, with Scooby Doo, everyday is Halloween. My Family and I want Warner Bros. to know how much we look forward to a new Scooby Doo movie on DVD every year (usually in the Fall). We enjoy the movies and we hope that you will allow us to continue our tradition of buying a new Scooby Doo movie on DVD every Fall.

Scooby-doo-aholics

This review is from: Scooby-Doo and the Goblin King (DVD) My kids are absolutely happy. We've been collecting all of the scooby doos. Every time the mail comes I see a smiling face. To be honest I tend to watch some of the episodes with them and I think the kids like scooby and the gang because their funny and innocent and down to earth. I prefer these types of cartoons compared to the new ones-which on TV are completely inappropriate for smaller kids. I think it makes my kids use their imagination more; each one allows them to play a part; They try to solve the mysteries as they watch. Scooby-Doo and the Goblin King was alright to them I know they seen a bunch but it's worth trying. You know its kids like...The kids like them; Who am I, an Adult to say, Oh!! this cartoon is this and that. They love them all. Thats all that matters. A++ in my book.

Another Scooby Hit!

This review is from: Scooby-Doo and the Goblin King (DVD) Scooby has been a faithful companion since my early years in the 70's...every Saturday morning I would adjust my chore schedule so I could be in the tv room right when Scooby started, and I still adore him, as do my own children. The Goblin King is great fun, and if you love Scooby, you won't be disappointed. I think Casey Kasem still does his thing in this particular movie, I'm not sure. Now that's a blast from my past! Enjoy this family fun movie!

Good but its mostly Scooby and Shaggy

This review is from: Scooby-Doo and the Goblin King (DVD) I'm a HUGE Scooby fan, have every DVD and many collectibles. I liked the movie but unfortunately Fred, Daphne and Velma weren't in it much. I like it when the entire gang has equal time in the film. Don't get me wrong, it was good and worth getting but I much more like the whole gang rather than focusing on Scooby and Shaggy.

The 12th, And Arguably the Best!

Giving you a brief run down of where I stand, I think (# 1) "Zombie Island" was really great. (# 2) "Witch's Ghost" was almost as good. (# 3) "Alien Invasion" had its moments. I didn't much care for (# 4) "Cyber Chase." (# 5) "Legend of the Vampire," was surprisingly good. (# 6) "Monster of Mexico," was weak, but it had its moments. (# 7) "Loch Ness Monster" was different, but interesting. (# 8) "Aloha Scooby Doo" was pretty good. (# 9) "Where's My Mummy?" was especially well written. (# 10) "Pirates Ahoy" was really great and remains my 2nd favorite. (# 11) "Chill Out" was disappointing and weak. Of this 12th chapter, my response was "What a rebound!" It starts normal enough with Scooby and the gang at this haunted carnival on Halloween. They run into a magician who is less than polite, and we find out that he can barely do the most simple magic tricks. He then runs into a magic fairy and steals her powers. Needless to say, this amateur magician goes from being comically ineffective, to disturbingly powerful. While trick or treating, Scooby and Shaggy come across this situation, and even though they are often cowardly about embraking on quests, they realize they have to rise above their weaknesses to save their friends, and maybe even the universe as we know it. (That's what makes Scooby and Shaggy so lovable. They have weaknesses and vulnerabilities, but they know that friends matter.)To make a long story short, they have to go into the spirit world to find a way to save life as we know it. And the interesting thing is that they run into different creatures associated with Halloween. (Ghosts, goblins, witches, jackolanterns, the Headless Horseman, etc.) And to make matters even more interesting, they can not be sure as to who will be a threat, and who may offer some help. (GREAT!) As if I needed another great thing to say about this movie, the climax is not only full of terror, (as well as some laughs), but there is a chilling twist as the moral ambiguity of the Goblin King (Tim Curry) is unfolded and we know where he stands. Overall, it's a PHENOMENAL adventure with tributes to different Halloween specials and movies. If you don't get this dvd, don't call yourself a fan of Scooby Doo.

Back to real ghosts and monsters!

This is the first post-Sander Schwartz Scooby-Doo made-for-video movie. And it's a good one, too! Because when Warner Bros. Animationoriginally began producing the made-for-video Scooby-Doo movies 10years ago, starting with "Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island," they broke awayfrom the typical "fake ghost and monster" formula and broke new ground, using real ghosts and monsters. (This wasn't the first time they did soeither, they did so back in the 1980s with "The 13 Ghosts ofScooby-Doo" and a few TV movies.) "Zombie Island" and the following"Scooby-Doo and the Witch's Ghost" (the best of the "real monster"movies) were much darker compared to the older Scooby-Doo cartoons. Butwhen Sander Schwartz took over in 2002, he made them switch back tofake monsters and ghouls, the first two were good ("Legend of theVampire" and "Monster of Mexico") which were practically like 70-minuteepisodes of "Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?", and after that it would vary. They basically became 70-minute episodes of "What's New, Scooby-Doo?"and typically focused on Fred and Daphne. But beginning with"Scooby-Doo in Where's My Mummy?" they began toying around with the oldformula again, which somewhat became the norm for the later films, which started to get better over time. Now that Sander Schwartz is gonefrom Termite Terrace (thank god!) I guess they decided to experimentagain. Bringing back real ghosts and monsters helped liven up thisrecent installment in the Scooby-Doo made-for-video series of movies! It also helped put a bit of creepiness back into the Scooby franchise, something that "What's New, Scooby-Doo?" and the 2001-2007made-for-video Scooby movies completely avoided. (Even the original"Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?" had quite a bit of creepiness in it, too.)However, now it's on to reviewing the actual movie itself. Even thoughthis was probably the umpteenth time they did a Scooby-Doo story thatrevolves around Halloween (such as "The Headless Horseman ofHalloween," "To Switch a Witch," "A Scooby-Doo Halloween" and manyothers), I still enjoyed it, mainly because Halloween is my favoriteholiday! And I really liked that fairy princess. I guess that provesnot all real supernatural creatures in this movie have to be bad! Thereal ghouls and dark setting helped bring this movie up to "Scooby-Dooand the Witch's Ghost" level. As far as voices go, we still have thesame voice cast from "What's New, Scooby-Doo?" and the other pastmade-for-video movies. And I am so glad that Casey Kasem was still ableto voice Shaggy, because I won't go into details on Scott Menville'scrappy Shaggy voice in the "Get a Clue" series. Frank Welker hasimproved a little on his Scooby-Doo voice. It's starting to sound lesslike Brain from "Inspector Gadget" and more like Scott Innes'sScooby-Doo voice! It seems Mindy Cohn's Velma voice changed a little, and Grey DeLisle's Daphne voice hasn't changed a bit since 2001. Themusic is pretty good, too, with a bit of lively musical numbers by themonsters! At that part it seemed to remind me of "Scooby-Doo and theBoo Brothers." As far as the sound effects go, they haven't changedthem much since 1998. They only use the classic H-B sound effects forexaggerated comedy scenes with Scooby, Shaggy, the goblin guards andKrudsky the Magician, similar to when Warner Bros. Animation was makingthe Cool Cat cartoons for WB/Seven Arts 40 years ago. And this may be aminor gripe, but the people at WB STILL haven't used the Haunted CastleThunder sound effect like the classic Scooby-Doo cartoons did! Thisannoys me mainly because the crappy "Shaggy and Scooby-Doo Get a Clue"series used it, so why not have the made-for-video movies use it?They're MUCH better than "Get a Clue!" Instead it sounds like they justsent the Foley editor into a real storm to record the thunder. Butspeaking of "Get a Clue," now on to the animation. The characters arethankfully not drawn in that ugly "Shaggy and Scooby-Doo Get a Clue"style, and the animation is quite decent, though not as good as theanimation in "Zombie Island" and "Witch's Ghost." There are alsoextensive uses of CGI effects/animation in this movie, which I don'tthink the previous direct-to-video Scooby movies even attempted! And asfar as the classic character personalities go, Scooby and Shaggy havenever changed since 1969. Daphne did not complain at once about herhair or clothes in this film, and it was nice to see a more intelligentand serious version of Fred again (after dumbing him down in "A PupNamed Scooby-Doo" and "What's New, Scooby-Doo?"). Velma fainting at thesight of a real fairy was just hilarious! I'm surprised she didn't dothat at the real monsters in the late-1990s made-for-video movies! Myonly main complaint about this movie is that they STILL didn't dedicateany of the recent Scooby-Doo movies, including this one, to JosephBarbera! Since he died before this film was even thought up, itwould've been nice to dedicate the movie to one of Scooby-Doo'screators. But nevertheless, they still insisted on using that zooming"1970s Hanna-Barbera" logo at the end, which is still completelyinaccurate and has been since 1998, since Warner Bros. Animationproduced the movie, and now that both Bill and Joe are gone, it makesno sense to have another company's logo (even if it's owned by WB) atthe end of a WB movie! Imagine seeing it at the end of a Looney Tunescartoon of the 1950s, and it'd be just as weird, if not weirder. However, this is admittedly better than the 2004-2007 made-for-videoScooby movies, and it's WAY better than "Shaggy and Scooby-Doo Get aClue!" I highly recommend this one, especially if you loved the1998-2001 Scooby-Doo movies!Oh and P.S., the werewolf Scooby-Doo and Shaggy come across when firstentering the monster world is AWESOME!

Interesting change of pace

No, seriously, I really think that a Scooby-Doo movie going after amusical genre is a really good change of pace. Sure, it may not be asgood as Zombie Island, and it may not live up as a Halloween musicalclassic the same way The Nightmare Before Christmas did, but it's stillnot bad for a beginner. The Halloween creatures are a big plus; they'reabsolutely creepy. Some of the musical numbers might need a littlework, but at least they're something that you can't walk out on. But,man! Oh, man! I can never get over that ending! I'm not gonna tell youthough; it'll just spoil the surprise. The bottom line: it's a delightfor the whole family, especially if you're a Scooby-Doo fan.

Lots Of Puns and Fun, Heh Heh Heh

Zoinks! Like, ruh roh, Raggy, don't rook now, but just when you wereabout to ask "where are you" there's a reaky new Scooby Doo movieavailable on rideo. Yeah, reaky. Gulp. And in this one, the whacked outwarlock isn't just a guy wearing a mask. Heh heh heh. Like, no way man,but this wunnerful creepy old time animation is completely on the markand ten times as fun as th-th-th-the rive action Scooby Doo movies.Like, trust me, old friend, old buddy, old pal, there are even a bunchof scary moments that will make you rump off your chair. Boing! Thereis also a runch of musical numbers. I especially liked the one thatwent romething like "Woararoarawoararoarawoar." Yikes! The kids willlove the Goblin King, and the adults will laugh at the inside rokes:"Oh no! Velma's fried!" or "Now that is something you just do not do toa guy's van." Why do I get the feeling this one should have been on thebig screen? Way to go old Scooby Dooby movie makers. You should totallyrent Scooby Dooooby Dooooo and the Goblin King: jeepers, maybe there'sfood inside the box.

Disappointing

I had mixed feelings on this one, for sure. It really is a bummer to take what was unique about Scooby Doo, in that past Scooby Doo episodes and movies were actually "investigating" mysteries, (including unmasking plots to scare people with fake supernatural items for nefarious purposes), and have this deviate from the formula so much. This seems derivative of much other pop culture items, but not in a fun way. The goblin ball music is totally a take off of "zoot suit riot"; the headless horseman is uncredited but seems plugged in for no good reason here; and the Hayden Pannetiere "tinkerbell" fairy creature, including magic pixie dust, was just a rip off of the Peter Pan/Tinkerbell craze right now. And of course, "The Amazing Krudski" seems a take-off of "The Amazing Kreskin" of the 1970s, which I doubt anyone except magic buffs would get. Having Wayne Knight, Lauren Bacall (!), Jay Leno, Wallace Shawn, Casey Casem again, Hayden Pannetieri, Tim Curry, and Jim Belushi was great plus-- what great talent there is here! The story was mostly Shaggy and Scooby which is a bummer. I mean, Scooby and Shaggy in Drag as Velma and Daphne? Why bother when Velma and Daphne are hardly in this movie at all? The story didn't really care to follow the plot and became a series of unconnected scenes without really any attention to logic at all, and the end seemed rushed 7) The lack of Velma was deafening. At the end of the day, it was fun to watch but forgettable after a few days. I should note that my four year old son found that this quickly replaced "Where's my Mummy" as his favorite Scooby Doo movie ever. If he had his way, he would have given this five stars. ;-)

I love this Scooby movie, my little boys like it too

My kids love most all our Scooby dvds, but when I get to decide, I pick this one as a treat for me. Smart, modern, very well written, amazing voice talents, great animation, fantastic story, love it! My boys are really used to "scarier" Scooby shows (even the oldest ones) since they've seen a lot, and they never have nightmares from them, so they like this one, but I could see how it would be better for kids at least 4 or older. It's certainly not as "scary" as some "Where are you?" series shows, I think. It's just a cute Halloween story - only "Newman's" voice (Wayne Knight) makes it a teeny bit scary to me!! What a riot!

2012-04-30 02:19:54

Spooky Scooby fun

The usualScooby and Shaggy hi jinks with gouhlish twist.Lots of spooky characters and Halloween fun, if you dont like jack o laterns, witches, magic, and goblins this movie is not for you. Imaginitive take on the Halloween night legend. It can be on the scary side for the younger crowd and a little long. Good for a night of scary ghost stories.

Another great Scooby movie

This review is from: Scooby-Doo and the Goblin King (DVD) My three year old is obsessed with Scooby Doo. He has been since he was about a year old. We have just about every movie we could find, and the TV series on DVD. He particularly loves this movie, especially since it has a Halloween theme, which is another obsession of his. There are so many big names attached to this one, and the story is really cute. The only thing that knocks off a star is that Fred, Velma, and Daphne are hardly in it. We like to see the whole Scooby gang together, but this one only has them in it for the first and last few minutes.
