Good first effort

This is a promising debut for the writer/director. Its pretty uneven butthe performances were great. Especially by two of my favorite actors,SteveZahn and Paul Giammati. Either of these guys could become the SteveBucsemiof the next decade. I'm interested to see this guys next film. I justhopethe script is tighter.

Sweet 'stache, man

I saw this perhaps 5 years ago on IFC. It is flat out hilarious. How can I begin to describe a plot that involves the mob, trauma-inducing flammable pants, a stolen Stanley cup, sweet 70's style mustaches, Jewish B boys, and a heartsick bankrobber? Well, I can't. If you are a fan of twisted, stupid movies, this is made for you

Funny, Risky and Well-casted Film

What's more funny than a couple of lounge singers, Jewish gangstersfromProvidence and unrequited love. The cast is amazing. Sam rockwell is agenius. Wheter he's in drama (Heist) or comedy(Welcome to Collinwood)he's seems toenjoy his work and when the actor is having fun the audience willfollow suit. Mark Ruffalo, Steve Zahn(totally underrated), Paul Giamattiand the oldschoolers, Michael Lerner and Harvey Fierstein make this one of thebest cast films in recent memory. Christina Kirk is sexy and funny andtough. The guy who plays the MC at the Bar Mitzbah is awesome. Ilaughed my ass off frombeginning to end.

Big Fat Laughs....

Wow, truly a masterful script matched up with perfect actors. Steve Zahn is hilarious (as he always is) in this comedy that makes u wanna be a jewish mobster AND a safe cracker too. I've seen this movie about 10 times and i'd hafta say that my favorite scene is where they buy "sundry goods" for Big Fat Bernie Gale..."excuse me, where would i be finding the country jams?" Please buy this movie, and if you like it, then buy 'Happy, Texas' and 'Bottle Rocket' as well, you won't be let down.

Great movie

This review is from: Safe Men (DVD) My husband and I had been on the look out for this movie for years! It was on HBO when it first came out and never to be seen on video. Just so happen to search it on Amazon and there it was. Awesome gift for Father's Day. This movie is extremely under rated. Love this movie!

Highly Under Rated

This review is from: Safe Men (DVD) This low budget comedy is one of my all-time favorites. Giamatti steals the screen as "Veal-Chop" ("Da-Chop"). Don't let this one go by.... I have two DVD copies and VHS.

ApolloBoy109 2013-06-07 10:47:26

You can't go wrong with these guys

Two of the hottest talents we have on the independent filmfront, Steve Zahn and Sam Rockwell are extreemly talentedperformers. The script is fun and light but with enoughkookiness to make the whole thing just left of center. Endearingwithout sap, comedy without shtick -- just a fun night at themovies. Catch Happy Texas and Galaxy Quest to see more of thesegentlemen's comic abilities.*******************************

best comedy of it's decade?

The most underrated comedy of the last fifteen years. It's smart, fresh, warm, subtle, tender... one of the best ensemble casts in anykind of movie. just great fun. a lightness of tone that reminds ofnnotchka. ruffalo, rockwell, and giamatti all show why they were aboutto become stars. giamatti is particularly unforgettable in this one.also, the fierstein monologue and Bernie Jr. are the stuff of legend.just a terrific fun film. the kind of movie i wouldn't mind that bad ifit were playing in the hospital while i was on my death bed. why not?it gets the picture pretty good. maybe i'd prefer if there were somePaul robeson movie on, or a martin luther king speech, or maybe genarowlands... but i wouldn't cry if safe men was on.

Not worth anyone's time

I don't know how or why this movie got made, and more importantly Idon't care. The cast led me to believe this unknown title could not gowrong. You have Giamatti, Rockwell, Zahn, Ruffalo! how could youpossibly go wrong with a cast like that? Well, I tried to forgive onehorrible dialogue sequence after another but by the time Rockwellstarts his romantic side-plot I was ready to smash the screen withanything within reach, I can't remember the last time I ever heard suchatrocious dialogue. Do not watch this movie, if you know someone whoowns this movie, disassociate yourself from this person and any oftheir acquaintances. You have been warned.

I LOVED THIS MOVIE!

Simple, funny and cute. Every character is adorable, and you will fall in love with all of them. I highly recommend this movie.

DuChamp-3 2013-05-25 16:34:25

worth the rent

OK - it helps if you are Jewish or have Jewish friends. It's a culturething. Besides that, it's a good Mob comedy. REAL mob movies take placeinNew York and Italy. This is Providence, RI. Knowing the Prov. Reputationmakes the jewish Mob bit even funnier. Lead guy Sam has aCarrey-in-Dumb-and-Dumber haircut, and has the same sorta "incompetentcharmwins the girl" thing going. Otherwise, there is little similarity to theFarrely film. The kind of movie where you aren't at all suprised to see aDwarf hit-man. Good dialogue. Great acting. Strange tone. Funmovie.

Funniest bar mitzvah since "The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz"

"Safe Men" plays as if you took a nice assortment of Woody Allencomedies and put them through a blender. The Jewish jokes, including ahilarious bar mitzvah will appeal to the ethnic audience, while theoutrageous ideas like exploding pants, will appeal to almost everyone.I have never seen Jewish stereotypes portrayed better, in part becauseof the incredible casting choices. Each character is so interesting, you will wish they each had more screen time. Sure it's ridiculous, butso are "Idiocracy", "Strange Wilderness", and "Office Space". Alongwith "Safe Men" the common thread between these comedies , is that eachone will hold up to multiple viewings. - MERK

Dumb and Dumber meets The Pink Panther ?

This 1998 bomb is as horrible as the infamous Jack Black-Ben Stiller train wreck Envy, and that, my friends, is bad company.Safe Men is loaded with talented actors, but they must have been high on toxic mushrooms, because the script is shit, and they all wallow in it like pigs.Paul Giamatti, Steve Zahn, Mark Ruffalo, Sam Rockwell: shame on you for pulling down this paycheck. Truth be told, there probably wasn't much of a payday to go around; in its limited theatrical release, Safe Men didn't earn enough money to buy a new car.To the viewer: ignore this direct-to-turd embarrassment, and give thanks that the actors went on to better things.Paul Giamatti (John Adams)Steve Zahn (Happy, Texas)Mark Ruffalo (You Can Count on Me)Sam Rockwell (Moon)

Safe Men: for discerning comedic taste

I absolutely loved this very subtle very outrageous wonderful comedy.Sam Rockwell and Steve Zahn do rival the best pairings in comedyhistory in this movie. The supporting cast is terrific and the story isalso rather gripping. If someone tells you this movie is bad... DO NOTLISTEN TO THEM PLEASE watch it! Then decide for yourself. Everythingabout this movie was well done. ALSO watch HITCHIKERS GUIDE TO THEGALAXIE (another Sam Rockwell film) VERY VERY FUNNY as well SAFE MENwas buried in the vault of some silly company and was not released verywidely. What a tragic mistake! This comedy rivals anything Woody Allenhas done (And I am a VERY big Woody Allen fan)

By the time I get home, flip on Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, I'm looking at 36 thousand of his hard earned female deer

Safe Men is a very lame comedy starring Steve Zahn and Sam Rockwell as Eddie and Sam, two wannabe Simon & Garfunkels who get mistaken for safe crackers and coerced into cracking safes for Big Fat Bernie Gale Jr. (Michael Lerner) and his henchman, Veal Chop (Paul Giamatti). They are in the Jewish Mafia.--------Sam: He's in the Jewish Mafia. It's probably more like a club than an organization.================ If Sam & Eddie can't get crackin' and start cracking those safes, they will be killed. Meanwhile, Frank (Mark Ruffalo) and Mitchell (Josh Pais) are the real safe crackers, but Frank is off his game since being dumped by Hannah, Leo the Fence's (Harvey Fierstein) daughter (Christina Kirk). --------------Hannah's dad: I once sold a woman a pair of exploding slacks. ==================Sam & Eddie keep running into Frank & Mitchell, as they are sent to crack the same safes. Sam meets Hannah while trying to crack her dad's safe. He keeps trying to ask her out. Hannah doesn't date safe crackers anymore, but Sam is persistent. He is doing at least a little better than the lovelorn Frank, who keeps trying to win her back. ---------Sam: Sweet 'stache. Frank: Thanks, bro.================Safe Men has a few laughs, but the half baked concept mostly has you wondering why this movie was ever made in the first place. Rockwell, Giamatti, Ruffalo, and Zahn will go on to bigger and better stuff, so it is a chance to see them in their formative stages, but hardly worth the trouble. There are lots of whacky ideas and riffs in Safe Men, but it is really kind of a mess. Giamatti tried the hardest, with his character, Veal Chop, but his accent reminded me of Dan Ackroyd at his most annoying. There were some funny moments when Jewish Mafia boss Big Fat Bernie Gayle's son was bar mitzvahed, but it couldn't make up for the many other jokes that went nowhere. --------------M.C. Victor: From the floor to the ceiling, how ya feeling? From the bris to this, he can't miss. From the Wailing Wall to the reception hall, to all y'all. Put your hands together for Big Fat Bernie Gayle Junior. ====================Bottom Line is Safe Men takes a few risks, and doesn't just play it safe, but the risks don't pay off. One of the best loser flicks of all time...

My friend and I recently discussed what genre Safe Men would fall under, and he came up with the concept of loser movies: basically, films we can all relate to, concerning lost and wierd people that we can place, recognize, etc...Safe Men has some of the subtlest humor, that when reading reviews from when the movie was released, one wonders if the reviewers were concious of this. Like most great films of this genre (Big Lebowski, The Stoned Age, and even docs like American Movie, Crumb, etc...), the success relies on the multiple viewings, and the power, comedy and brilliance of such things is often lost on the newness of first viewing. Safe Men has become the basis of many inside jokes, and even proves my point that good movies are still being made. The acting is so excellent and honest, I wonder if that put a lot of people off. There is no trickery, pretense, or any of the standard BS that often infultrates lesser films. The chemistry between Zahn and Rockwell is classic, and the interplay with Paul "Veal Chop" Giammtti and Mark Ruffalo add a tenderness and visual gag each and every time. Throw a fake ass, flammable pants, and the grandaddy of all Bar-Mitzvah scenes into the mix, and you've got comedy gold.

Great Odd Humor

Not your cookie cutter "Dumb" comedy. Just little oddities that make yousay, "What the hell was that all about?" Sam Rockwell and Steven Zahnhavegreat comedic timing as well as a flair for understated physical comedy.Itjust made me laugh. . but I must warn that I've recommended this film tosome of my friends, and it just didn't respond to their comedicsensibilities. Also, if you've ever been to a barmitzvah, the scene inthemovie is just barely parody. Hilarious!7 out of 10 "Sweet 'stache dude."

You'll either poo your pants with laughter, or not laugh at all!

This is definitely a love it or be underwhelmed by it comedy. Mepersonally, it cracksthe hell out of me. And most of my friends. Its set in Rhode Island anditseems toperfectly represent the stranger aspects of South Eastern New Englandhumor. There issuch a thing, and if you are from Rhode Island or SoutheasternMassachusetts, and youare cool, you will have a better shot at finding this film hilarious. Thecharacters arereally what makes it great. From Vealchop and Big Fat Bernie Gail andLittle Big Fat, toLeFleur and Mr. Blue, this film is literally bursting with excellentcharacters. I'm notsaying you'll definitely like it, but if you do, you'll have a friend forlife.

Very Funny Movie That Deserves More Attention

This review is from: Safe Men (DVD) Very funny, often over-looked little movie. Rockwell, Zahn, Giamatti, Ruffalo and Lerner are all brilliant.

vonshavingcream 2013-04-28 20:50:52

I really enjoyed this one.

I'll start off with this. I don't usually talk about movies at work.Mainly because people tend to have different tastes than me. But Ifound myself telling people about this movie after I watched it.I caught this one on Netflix the other night. I really enjoyed it. Ilike Sam Rockwell as an actor, I don't know if I can relate to him, orif he just brings that old style of comedy back to the screen. The story of the script is OK and I would have like to see a littlemore back story, but all in all, it held its own. Or maybe just somemore "buddy" type interaction. Sam and Steve have that kind ofchemistry, and could pull of quite a bit that most wouldn't be able toget away with.I would put this in the same section as Support Your Local Sheriff orSpies like Us. I know they aren't the same genre but I really thinkthat The two main leads in this movie have that same kind of bond, likein those films.
