Excellent Comedy

Most comedies either bore me, insult me with foul language (as if cussing is supposed to somehow be funny), or are so stupid that I can't endure watching for more than a minute or two (memories of "I Love Lucy" pop to mind).Ruthless People is actually funny! Good acting, plenty of twists in the plot to keep your interest, and what I really enjoyed most was that I was having such a good time watching that I didn't already know how the movie would end. Almost all movies are so transparent that there are enough clues within the first minutes to know exactly how the plot will develop and end. Ruthless people however maintains just enough action to keep the viewer interested in the moment and not watching the clock.All actors fit their roles well, making the story easy to get into. The personalities are fun too, just as nutty as real people. I highly recommend Ruthless People!

Ruthless People: Starring Better Midler and Danny DeVito

This comedy is hilarious, allthough it's not well-known, it should be a classic! The only flaw is, some of the lines and jokes are so catchy, it's just not funny anymore after you've seen it once, or before you have time to forget it.

A comedy of miscommunication

I thought this movie was hilarious. Almost everything anyone says has adouble meaning. (The police chief and the hooker, the big dog, etc)This movie will keep you laughing from beginning to end. Bette Midleris terrific as the kidnapped rich man's wife, and Danny DeVito is alsofabulous as the scheming rich man himself. There are thousands of greatone-liners that you will keep quoting for years after you see thismovie (I know I have) like the unforgettable "I've been kidnapped byK-Mart!" and "You lying @#$*%^!!! Oh, honey, they made me say that!"This is a must see! So go see it! Now! What are you still reading thisfor, you should be out renting the movie!!

Apparently a good movie (if old)

Be prepared to laugh your pants off...

"Ruthless People" is one of those movie going experiences that is very rare now a days. This is one of the only movies I have ever seen, where I did not know too much about it when I first saw it. When I first saw this movie in a full movie theater, I literally laughed hard all the way through the movie. By the time the movie was over, my face hurt, my jaw ached, and my stomach hurt from laughing so hard. Now granted, watching this movie a second or third time I didn't laugh as hard but I still did laugh through out. This movie is one of my all time favorite comedies, and it is Abrams and Zucker brothers finest movie. This movie is well worth a look over...especially if you have never seen or heard of it before.

A hilarious comedy classic

He is Sam Stone, a pint-size slimeball who gets rich off stealing others' ideas. Only this time, he's stolen from the wrong person, a gentle housewife named Sandy Kessler, whose enraged husband, Ken, is about to fix the slimeball's wagon once and for all. How better than by kidnapping Sam's wife and holding her for ransom? Trouble is, Sam hates his wife because he's cavorting with his mistress Carol (who in turn is cheating on him with another man), and sees the kidnap threat as a heaven-sent way of getting rid of his wife. Send the ransom? You gotta be kidding. Why go through a messy divorce when you can be a bereaved widower with a fat bank account? Bette Midler is an absolute riot as Barbara Stone, trusting in her husband to deliver her from the kidnappers' benign clutches until she is brought up short when she finds out what a dirtbag he really is; Danny DeVito oozes sleaziness as her loathsome husband Sam, and Judge Reinhold and Helen Slater are a twin delight as the sorriest pair of kidnappers on the planet. The movie is a laugh riot from the crazy opening credits to the inspired ending. It's 80's comedy at its best.

Laugh Out Loud Funny

I saw this film in the theatre when it was released in 1986. I havebeen to a lot of movies, and this is the only one that I HAD to seeagain--just to hear the lines that had been drowned out by theaudience's laughter!Often a movie's previews will give away all the funny lines of a movie,and I remember that the previews for "Ruthless People" gave away theclassic "I've been kidnapped by KMart" line. But for once, there wereso many hysterically funny moments in this movie that it didn't matter.It's just that funny. So if you haven't seen it, you really are missing something. Rent itand be prepared to hurt your sides laughing.

Amazing cast, solid comedy

Sam Stone (Danny DeVito) wants to kill his wife, Barbara (Bette Midler), due to equal parts of hate and greed. Before he can commit the crime, she is kidnapped by a married couple that Stone had cheated years earlier. The kidnappers (Judge Reinhold & Helen Slater) demand a ransom or threaten to kill her but Stone's only interest is in provoking them into doing just that. To add a little spice to the mix, Stone also has a mistress who wants to blackmail him for the murder that she still believes he's committed. All of this happens within the first ten minutes of the movie and things get more complicated from there.Sam Stone and his wife both live up to the movie title superbly. Danny DeVito is perfect as a ruthless, conniving S.O.B. who will stop at nothing, including murder, to get what he wants. Bette Midler plays Barbara as a holy terror to her kidnappers and torments them in every way possible. She taunts and berates them, and deals out a good deal of physical punishment as well. Judge Reinhold and Helen Slater are probably the world's nicest kidnappers as they try to get their money while providing Barbara with home cooked meals and a freshly cleaned room of her own including a television and workout equipment. Bill Pullman makes his movie debut here in a small but funny role as yet another person trying to squeeze a buck out of the situation.The story probably wouldn't hold up to major scrutiny but for a comedy it's more than solid enough. There are some very funny moments in the film, many involving Midler and the kidnappers, and most of the rest isn't bad. A few bits do fall with a bit of a thud, but these are the exception, not the rule. Ruthless People isn't a great comedy, but it is a good one and the cast is a treat to watch. I'd recommend it in general, and if you're a fan of Danny DeVito or Bette Midler then it is really a must see.

Unbelievably clever.

Just to start, the Screenplay: there's not an empty moment in this flick.Every scene, every word, every action has comedic significance. It's a primeexample of superior screenwriting. Ruthless people intertwines essentiallyfour stories: Sam Stone's (Devito) plot to get rid of his wife, BarbaraStone's experience as the kidnapping victim of a couple who are anything butRuthless, the kidnappers (Reinhold and Slater) and their troubled existence,and finally-and most comically-Stone's mistress and her boyfriend's haplessscheme to extort money. The cast: this is without a doubt a careerhighlight for both Devito and Middler. Devito's scenes are always the film'sfunniest. Middler terrorizes her kidnappers as no other actress could. Afirst class comedy no doubt.

Garbage

An example of Hollywood's willingness to do anything to make a buck and feature some stars. Absolutely void of humanity, not smart enough to be farce or primal enough to strike any real emotion, the movie wanders about in crudity and hammering the obvious. God-awful.

great chemistry between all players.

One of the best/hilarious kid-napping movies ever!

I've seen movies where people get kid-napped, and there were prettygood, but this one has got to be the most hilarious kid-napping movieever. Judge Reinhold and Helen Slater play husband and wife who kidnapBette Midler who's married to billionaire Sam Stone (Danny Devito).You'd think that Sam would be heartbroken, but no, he's so happy hecelebrates with a bottle of champagne. So, he's happy, meanwhile hismistress Carol is dating Bill Pullman. Wow, talk about big stars, yougot Danny DeVito, Bette Midler, Judge Reinhold and Bill Pullman. Thisis one of Bill Pullman's first movies, but I got to tell you, eventhough he's been in tons of comedies, this one has got to be his best!Danny and Bette have a lot of great moments to in this movie. Actually,I think all the actors/actresses have tons of great moments, that'sbecause, it is a great movie. I love this movie, the problem was, itdidn't get a lot of publicity, I remember the first time I watched themovie I had tears of laughter, and I'm not talking about just a singletear on my cheek, I could barely watch the movie cause I was dying oflaughter. That's probably cause it was directed by Jim Abrahams, David& Jerry Zucker, the same guys who did the "Airplane" movies. The onething I love about Zucker, Abrahams, and Zucker's movies is thecredits. They have all sorts of little tidbits and things like that.Anyways, watch the movie, it's hilarious. I'm giving it a 10, I wish Icould give it 10+ because this really is the best movie I have everseen, and I've seen tons of them. So go ahead and rent/watch the besthilarious/kid-napping movies ever!

Greedy people

This movie was a product of it's time, being the 80's when greed was good and indulgence was in abundance. At the centre of this film is Sam Stone, a man who 15 years ago married a plain and overweight woman. She also happens to be heiress to a multi-million dollar fortune. Sam is tired of living with her and all of her disgusting habits, so he confides in his mistress (yes, that's right, his MISTRESS) that he plans to kill his rich wife and inherit her money. Unknown to Sam his wife has been kidnapped by a nice young couple who Sam ripped off recently. Rather than go through a long expensive lawsuit, which they would probably lose anyway, this couple decide to get rich quick by this means. But the naive couple don't realise that they have done Sam a big favour because when they threaten to kill her if he doesn't pay the ransom, or if he calls the police and media he thinks they're serious. So Sam breaks out the champagne and practices ther role of the bereaved widower. In the meantime, the 'kidnappers' are at a loss to understand why he heasn't paid the ransom. There are many other twists and turns in this movie, but many will be heartened that sometimes nice guys can win and that nasty people get their comeuppance.

Absolutely hilarious!

I am going to be simple, no movie had ever provided me such hilarious entertainment like Ruthless People did! Danny Devito is absolutely superb in this classic comedy! Danny takes the role of a millinaire who's got it all, all except love for his wife...and who can blame him when his wife is a fat, crazy psychotic hag? So Danny plans to murder her...but somebody has kidnapped her first and are asking for a ransom...but there is a twist. Devito had wanted this to happen all along!A crazy wife, a comical husband, inept kidnappers, perverted police officers, money loving girlfriends...what else could you want in a comedy? Acting is simply superb, the ineptness of the kidnappers had me rolling with laughter! Coupled up with superb twists in the story and the pure hiliarity of the actors, this movie is a must-see for everyone!

A gem!

Ruthless is a hilarious movie. Not only is it hilarious, but it also hastons of twists. A very well-written plot. Danny DeVito plays a great badguy. Everything this movie does just works great. Bette Midler is veryfunny. Every character is funny in this movie. Overall a hilarious moviefull of twists and hilarious characters. ***1/2 (out of four)

God, I miss the 1980s!

I love the 1980s. It was a great decade. This movie is clearly a greatcomedy with an all star cast featuring Divine Bette Midler as thekidnapped heiress Barbara Stone who we hate at first because she is oneof the nastiest people alive at first down in the basement. She thinksher husband played by the multi-talented Danny DeVito, Sam Stone, hasno interest in getting his wife back. In fact, the kidnapping was a bigrelief at first since he wanted to kill her. His mistress is playedbeautifully by Anita Morris. The kidnappers are a nice couple played byJudge Reinhold and Helen Slater. When you feel sorry for the kidnapperover the victim, then you have a hit comedy? IT's filmed in LosAngeles. Ken Kessler is a guy who can't sell retail stereo equipmentlike most successful sellers. He doesn't have the conscience to selloverpriced equipment to a young struggling couple. He is one of thesalesman that you would like-honest and reasonable. His partner SAndyKessler is an aspiring fashion designer whose idea was stolen by SamStone who makes a fortune by robbing the designer. Anyway, it's a greatcomedy.

The era of Bette

1986 to 1989 were big years for Bette Davis on the movie scene. In 1986 she filmed Ruthless People with Danny DeVito and the lesser known Helen Slater (Supergirl fame). Ruthless People, while a bit dated, has some hilarious moments and needs inclusion in any Midler collection.Who could forget the kidnapped Midler lifting paint cans to keep fit and lose weight. Well, it's one way to keep yourself busy while being kidnapped. Bette went on to star in the funny, but not as good as, "Outrageous Fortune" with Shelly Long. DVD SUMMARY: Ruthless People is a bare-bones DVD. However, worth owning for the Bette factor alone!
