While the audience watches a black and white horse opera, a narrators voice wonders what such a movie would be like today. Rex OHerlehan, The Singing Cowboy, finds himself in color and enters a cliche ridden town, in which the evil cattle baron (Andy Griffith) and the new Italian cowboys (who always wear raincoats no matter how hot it gets) join forces to get him and the sheep ranchers to leave the valley.

We have taken some photos of "Rustlers' Rhapsody". They represent actual movie quality.
Personally, I think this film is one of the cleverest and funniestspoofs I've ever seen, and in many ways even warmly uplifting. I haveto imagine that the well matched cast had a great time doing this one,and that there were more than a few retakes because the actors keptcracking up at their own performances, which are, in my humble opinion, universally and hilariously well executed without ever retreating intoslapstick. I was especially floored by the sidekick/narrator (thatfirst bar scene is priceless). The humor is ongoing, and the film pokesfun at a dozen social stereotypes as it seeks, tongue-in-cheek, toresolve an unexpected and not so unfamiliar wrinkle in the problem of"good vs. bad" using the 1930's Western as a template for the tale. That said, I've recommended "Rustlers Rhapsody" to a variety of people, but have been completely unable to predict with even remote accuracywho will like it and who will not; just one of those movies, I guess. So I've given up on that approach and now I don't try to guess; I justrecommend it to everybody.
It may take being a war baby to fully appreciate the the subtle lampoonsofthe Saturday morning cowboy fares, served up to kids of the 50's and early60's, but with the Hugh Wilson script and directing talents, complimentedwith a very solid cast of characters performed by actors like TomBerenger,Andy Griffith, G.W. Bailey, Marilu Henner and Sela Ward, along with somevery beautiful photography and a cast of great character parts, it wouldtake a stodgy curmudgeon to turn up their nose at this great piece ofcomedy. Kudos to the whole cast, crew and production team,(not to mentionagreat music score) for giving us this film. I hope it doesn't go by thewayside, as I think all ages can appreciate the heart that Mr. Wilson putintodoing this project.
This spoof of westerns ranks just behind Blazing Saddles for itssend-up of the genre. Or at least it did before it got cut for video. There is a scene missing, and it is both funny AND plot critical.Rex (Tom Berenger) backs down from a duel with Bob Barber (PatrickWayne) because, while Rex IS a heterosexual, he is not a CONFIDENTheterosexual (having never engaged in intercourse). How Rex goes aboutgaining his confidence is an hilarious bit, and comes into play when herides back into town STANDING IN THE SADDLE (clearly confident). Alater bit about how he is "improving" falls flat without this scene aswell.Still, I recommend this film with little in the way of reservations. But if you can see the original theatrical release, you'll be seeing afunnier film.
I usually enjoy parodies, and this one is my absolute favorite. TomBerenger shows a rare lighthearted side of himself as Rex O'Herlihan,The Singing Cowboy. Andy Griffith is the best I've ever seen him asColonel Ticonderoga, the gay cattle baron. Sela Ward (the Colonel'sdaughter) and Marilu Henner (Miss Tracey, the town prostitute) are bothentertaining and easy on the eyes. G.W. Bailey gives a hilariousperformance as Peter, the town drunk turned overeager sidekick. The humor is more subtle than the slapstick of "Blazing Saddles," whichseems to be the only Western parody that most people have seen.Personally, I greatly prefer "Rustler's Rhapsody." Some of my favoritemovie quotes come from this movie. I've seen it at least a dozen timesand it never fails to make me laugh out loud.Thankfully I now own a copy of the DVD, as my videotape has beenwatched so often that it's wearing out.
The best spoof of all is the movie that pokes fun at "The Formula", while carefully following "The Formula" itself, whether the movie is a western, science fiction, or murder mystery. "Rustler's Rhapsody", "Galaxy Quest", and "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" succeed, and succeed superbly, in spoofing their respective genres in this way.White Hats, Black Hats, action and comedy combine to make this "feel good" movie a hit. Those lucky enough to remember Roy Rogers, Mat Dillon, and Clint Eastwood will enjoy this movie.I currently own this movie on VHS. It is on my "must buy" list when it becomes available on DVD.
This review is from: Rustlers' Rhapsody (DVD) What if Gene Autry movies were made in modern times? Not a burning question but still the makings for a good comedy. This is a concept comedy that requires a little thought rather than the mindless slapstick popular these days. And yet still very entertaining.
It's too bad more people haven't had the pleasure of watching thishilarioussend-up of the Western genre. For those of you who thought that BlazingSaddles said everything there was to say on this subject, give Rustler'sRhapsody a whirl. I promise you, it'll be worth your time.8 out of 10.
It has been a few years since I last saw this film, but I remember itbeingvery funny. G.W. Bailey's narration is comical, Andy Griffith ishilarious, and Tom Berenger does a great job as the flawed hero who only shootspeoplein the hand. Funny little movie, give it a look.
A western comedy? Not too many of those out there. Maybe that's why Rustler's Rhapsody isn't as well-known as it deserves to be. I had a great time watching this. The humor level is above-average in terms of sophistication. It doesn't take itself too seriously but never degenerates to the point of absurdity. A good cast helps round out the film's enjoyment. It's too bad there aren't any special features found on this disk. However, the low price makes up for it. Add the fact that this DVD is in anamorphic widescreen (the quality all widescreen movies should be in but aren't) and you have a terrific value. Highly recommended.
This is an affectionate send-up of the B westerns. If you've only seen Awesterns you'll miss half the fun. If you hate westerns altogether you'llmiss all the fun. Tom B. and everyone else plays their roles absolutelystraight and are a riot because of it. Never before in film history have Iseen a single running gag (i.e. 'the same thing happens in every western')be sustained for the film's duration from so many different angles.
When I was a child who insisted on hating westerns, this was the movie my dad showed me to change my mind. A spoof on all westerns from the old depression-era shorts to the "spaghetti" westerns of the 70's & 80's, "Rustlers' Rhapsody" not only pays homage, but injects some modern-day common sense into them. I was hooked from the moment the screen shifted into color and the bad guys who had been fleeing the lone cowboy suddenly realized they outnumbered him and turned around to chase him. This movie not only taught me that I could enjoy a western, but also (with some help from my dad) served as a sort of guide to the various types of westerns that have been popular. The narration gave a sort of tongue-in-cheek analysis of the variations within the genre, which, oddly enough, has helped me navigate my way through more serious films.
This review is from: Rustlers' Rhapsody (DVD) It is a very funny movie, with lots of spoofs from old western movies. Basically it is a "what if old singing cowboy movies was made today". My whole family loved the movie on many levels. The kids like the simple plot, flashy costumes and slap stick comedy. The women like it for the funny romance that happens. Adults like the references and spoofs of the old movies we remember as a kid. They movie is narriated by the town drunk so you get a great point of view along the way.The move is not suspenseful nor overly well acted. It is just fun to watch movie. This would be a movie that Mel Brooks would have approved of. So if you liked Mel Brooks' Blazing Saddles, you should like this one.
This has got to be one of the funniest movies of all time! The first time Isaw it I almost wet myself I was laughing so hard. It is one of thosemoviesI like to watch again and again. If you've seen any Gene Autry, Tom Mix orRoy Rogers movies you will find it especially funny, but even it you'venever seen an old western it is still a funny movie.
Absolutely side splitting satirical look at the early singing cowboywestern. Tom Berringer plays Rex O'Herlihan the singing cowboy whospoofs every western cliché in the book. Great comedy performances aremade in this movie by Andy Griffith, Mary Lu Henner, Sela Ward andFernado Rey plus a lot of great supporting actors. Also Patrick Waynemakes a guest appearance in the movie. If you are looking for a sophisticated film that the critics all love, this probably won't be it. But if you're regular folks that enjoy theold time western, you'll bust a gut laughing at this movie. Side note, the main musical theme is performed by Rex Allen Jr. as well as thelove theme by Country Artist Garry Morris.
This review is from: Rustlers' Rhapsody [VHS] (VHS Tape) At times, this movie is absolutely hilarious. This is the funniest spoof on westerns I have seen. Tom Berenger's Rex O'Herlihan is right on the money, with his guitar and hourse, of course. Jim Carter has a hilarious part early on (you remember him, right? That guy from Top Secret, Deja Vu (or, did I already tell you that?)).Anyway, this movie is worth catching.
The scene where Rex get's his 'confidence' back from the rancher's daughter and the Talketive bar girl is missing, I haven't seen the VHS to see if it is missing from that edition as well. I still love the movie, though.
This movie represents that finest in the parodies of old movies. As achild, I would see the old westerns and the serials on TV after school. With the entry alone, if you are watching this in a Home theaterSetting, You will see the humor. From the transformation from Black &White to the Color Screen, and the change in the Sound, it reminds meof how I thought the movies had been on my 50's model AdmiralTelevision with approximately 13 " screen. To the last line of thismovie, anyone over the age of 45 will be able to smile. And the Actors? There are some of the greatest people really selling the story line.Great Movie!!! Mel Brooks must have seen this movie for the greattongue-in-cheek jokes.
I realize that a sense of humor varies from person to person, but thismovie just isn't very funny to me.I saw this film in the summer of '85when it was released with a group of friends. We gathered every Fridayto take in a movie. We took turns picking the film we would see, andregretfully,I chose this one. This movie is labeled a comedy, and itjust doesn't work.I will give the actors credit here,as they did thebest they could do with what they were given, which was not much atall. The jokes fell horribly short of their goal, which of course is togenerate laughter. It has been a long time, but I don't recall a singlelaugh among my friends and I while watching this movie.I felt the needto apologize to them for choosing this one,and I did. I felt especiallybad for Andy Griffith,a man I deeply admire as an actor. This issomething he will not want to be remembered for,I am sure.Overall,Iwill give them credit for their attempt here, but it just didn't workout.Save your money.
A wonderful send-up to old cowboy movies! Great cast! My grandson (6) LOVED this movie and doesn't seem to catch the double entendres (which are SO good!! Highly recommend - 5 stars!
This is the greatest movie ever made! Well, maybee not, but it's up there in the top ten on my list.
