red rose written by Stephen king?

I noticed the credits gave Stephen King as writer. How can this say itwas written by Stephen king? Someone please help. There are othermovies about this same house with another group of subjects doing thesame things. This is in fact a remake, which means it cant be writtenby Stephen king. I am watching one right now. "The Haunting " 1963 withJulie Harris. And i do believe I have seen another one as well. Doesrewriting a movie in your own style, and changing a few scenes here andthere make it a total rewrite and give you credit for it? If anyone hasany insight on this , please help me understand.I know he has gotten tobe quite commercial, but i feel the other movie is just as good if notbetter and deserves equal praise.

Very Scary

I found this movie to be really scary and awesome for anyone that loves agood horror movie. I get scared really easily and recently a friend of minedeveloped an obsession with Stephen King movies and horror movies ingeneral,I was able to sit through a bit of the Shining and all of the Firestarter(very tame horror movie starring Drew Barrymore as a child) I also watchedMilo (weird..sorta warped horror movie) so watching Rose Red was a bigthingfor me. I think Stephen King is a pure genius, every scene of this moviehadme shaking and terrified but for some reason it also had me enthralled andforcing myself to watch just to find out what happened next! The acting isreally good especially by Kimberly J. Brown (Annie Wheaton) at firstthoughts you may think that another "haunted house" horror flick can't bemuch different/better from any of the others, however Rose Red will alwaysstick in my mind as excellent and stands out much more than a lot of otherhorror stories. I give it 8.7/10

Rose Red, you are beautiful

Kimberly J. Brown is convincing as Anne in this chilling horror movie.Thefollowing cast is superb. The costumes are strait-laced. One of the goodfilms in the genre, Rose Red will frighten the viewer with a need tobuild.7 out of 10.

Great tribute to Shirley Jackson

This miniseries was definitely a tribute to both Shirley Jackson's "TheHaunting of Hill House" and the 1963 version "The Haunting". Forget the1999 version recommended as similar here.Well done. Worth watching!

Not for the desensitized

Rose Red was one of the better adaptations of a Stephen King Novel forscreen. Though after the transition into the second half of the film, itsort of loses it's scare appeal and leaves the viewer somewhat deflated. However, for a made for television miniseries, the gaps in plot can beeasily overlooked, and this movie enjoyed if it isn't being overanalyzedandsized up against massive budget Hollywood productions. That said, just think about this: A house that builds itself and devoursthe bodies and souls of any and all who dare to inhabit... if that's notscary, I don't know what else is. Then again, if you've beendesensitizedby years of media violence, you certainly won't be scared by a creepy oldhouse. ;)

BLOOD AND ROSES

Bringing a Stephen King novel to the screen or even King's own screenplays have wrought us more ineffective translations than good ones. A few rare examples: "The Dead Zone," "Carrie," "Salem's Lot", "Stand by me" and "The Shawshank Redemption." ROSE RED could have been a really epic haunted house movie, but King borrows so much from previous novels and the producers dug up some really bland actors, therefore negating the potential right away. So much of what goes on in "Rose Red" is muddled and pretentious. Characters disappear and obviously die, but for some reason the script doesn't allow us to see that. Even though made for TV, I think a little more actual scenes of the murders may have made it a little more interesting. As far as the acting goes: Nancy Travis (?) does not have the chops to carry such a schizophrenic role; she tries but a more seasoned actress could have made her more believable. Overacting awards have to go to Laura Kenney (Emery's mother); Matt Ross (Emery himself); David Dukes (sad he died during the filming, but his performance was too comedic to be taken seriously). Kimberly Brown as Annie, Matt Keesler as Steve, and Judith Ivey as Kathy did well; the others merely adequate. Craig Baxley's direction was good at times, very eeries and spooky, but then sometimes lapsed into melodramatic hokiness. Not an awful adaptation of a King work, but overall disappointing.

My Favorite Mini Series since Stephen King's IT!!

I love Stephen King's mini series, I would make sure and set my VCR every time one would come on. This was no exception I had to sit and watch. Yes its long but very detailed and enthrawlling masterpiece. Stephen King captures this Haunted House tale of "Rose Red." If you love good old haunted houses and scary stories you'll love this. It has the sense of reality, maybe perhapes because some haunted houses are real or we would like to think so. Every house has a story, and this one is certainly has it's tale to tell. It's about a mansion of a house thats been built by John Rimbauer who built it for his wife as a wedding gift. Some gift I have to say. His wife then gets the idea about ghosts, and her having to build the house until it's done. It's a spectacular house with mysteries to every room. And every room having a story to tell. But that's not where the story ends. Dr. Joyce Reardon played by a very great Nancy Travis, loves the story of Rose Red...who wouldn't? She embarkes on getting a group of psychics with their own specialties to awaken the house of Rose Red. The one with the key to open the house is an amazing teenage girl who's Autistic girl named Annie Wheaton who has a special gift. I think that's why I love most of Stephen King's stories he seems to use children as the key to the unseen world. Such as in Stephen King's IT. Not to mention he's a fantastic story teller bringing together a remarkable cast and crew together to tell this haunted tale of which originally aired on ABC. It has a wonderful haunted tale, amazing characters that you'll love and love to hate. The DVD is a great buy! I was really impressed with it. It has a fantasic The Making of Rose Red. Which is very detailed and I think longer than a half an hour. It goes through the special effects, and how Stephen King got his idea to tell the tale, which is in fact based on the Winchester House in San Jose, California. It also goes through make up, and the cast tells their story of the making of the film. It's Stephen King's first I think since his accident. At least his television story mini series. And not to worry, Stephen King makes an appearance in his movie of course. The making of it is great I loved it. If you like the behind the scene's stuff that goes into the movie. It also pays tribute to David Dukes who sadly passed away in the movie. It also goes into detail of the book, The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer, with Dr. Joyce Reardon. But they leave that part up to you whether to believe or not any way it's fun and detailed of the story before the team enters Rose Red. It also has production commentary which I have yet to view and other languages to select. I give the movie and DVD an A+!!! Just remember, "Every house has a story to tell...this one will kill you."

It wasn't all that great

It was supposed exciting, it must be, otherwise 4 hours is a very longway!I kept telling myself that it will get better. What I liked about 'Storm of the century' 'the (new) shining' and 'thestand', that it was exciting from minute 1 and that is how it stayedthroughout the movie.Rose Red wasn't anything like that, the only thing I liked about it wastheAutistic girl, I thought she was pretty good.So if you're going to watch it, try to realize it is 4 hours! And it atyourown risk! want to watch a good Stephen King movie? The Stand! 6 hours ofmovie, but worth your time,See yaGreetings,NoVarelluMGroningen, Holland

was expecting MUCH better

If you're looking for a good haunted house movie, pass this one up. Its overly long and totally disjointed. The obvious places for commercial breaks don't help. None of the characters are sympathetic in any way. And the ending is neither satisfying nor cathartic. It just ends. Again, if you want a GOOD haunted house movie, watch 'The Haunting' (1963) with Julie Harris or 'The Legend of Hell House' with Roddy McDowall.

Not very scary, not very engrossing, not very good.

While Stephen King has written some excellent works and some of those haveworked very well on film, this is not one of them. The haunted house themehas been done over and over, and King just reuses the same old tricks. Themovie is not scary, but is actually rather comical - the characters are allstereotypes and only a few of them possess any actual depth. The miniserieswas amusing enough but I certainly wouldn't want to watch it again. Thiswas a promising concept that was unfortunately not carried out well. Theprimary bright spot comes from Matt Ross's performance as Emery, one of thefew truly interesting characters in the film. Kimberly J. Brown's portrayalof Annie was supposed to be a big draw, but I found the characterunbelievable, unrealistic, unlikeable, and had no sympathy for the girl whowas supposed to earn sympathy more than anyone else.

House born bad that could not improve before being crushed b

Who is Stephen King ? Of course everybody knows him, or, sorry!, has heard about his novels or the movies they've inspired. As a Frenchman, I have not been impregnated with King stories from the craddle ... that is why I know I have to consider King stories with different eye glasses ... That being said,, this particular movie is well in the line of King's stories... Did I enjoy watching It ? Not that much actually. I mean this is not the best of all Stephen King stories. I must admit I am not such a big fan of Bad-Houses-Movies, although I must also admit that horror movies can be entertaining too. I mean, they provide a different kind of chilly, a different emotional experience, and you know it's just happening on the screen not in real life, so these movies maybe provide a kind of excitement that one part of our brain may appreciate (unfortunately I guess). Of course, terrible things can happen in real life too, even real accidents can happen \ Anyway,,, this particular movie takes place in a huge mansion located in Seattle , and this house has a form of intellignece, a bad one in the movie of course. A set of participants want to commit hair rising experiences in that house of nightmares... they won't be disappointed ; some will even be hurt or even die. Finally, this house of woes, considered as a living thing itself, is rocked by large meteorites. So much for the storey. Starting from there, the movie is not bad, it is just that it is too long and there are "empty passages" with little action in them. Some parts are very good though. Some characters have a special appeal, like Nick for instance, who at one moment seems to be the most important person of the group before disappearing to be unheard of anymore... Generally speaking, the actors perform very well in the movie.

WOW!! Stephen King has nearly outdone himself.

Rose Red is yet another wonderful screenplay written by Stephen King, theHorror movie/novel god. It is full of twists and turns, not to mentionmanywonderful, loveable characters... not to mention the ones we all love tohate. Kimberly Brown (Annie Wheaton) does a wonderful job of making Annieseem autistic, but not quite retarded. It's a nice touch and makes thecharacter that much easier to love. Granted, i'm not crazy about theending, but, it follows King's past style and is not a large surprise forKing fans, it's what you would expect to not expect from him. Great movie, everyone who likes King would love it.

whoah ho!

..and that is exactly right. I missed the miniseries on tv so I went out andrented it. I am fond of King's work and I have seen a couple of his earliertv made series (ie The Stand, Langoliers) and they seemed quite interesting. Some not so interesting. I had some doubts that the premise of this serieswas gonna be one of those typical haunted house movies. In fact, there wasmore added to this such as character involvement, more chills and the story. No and I am not saying that Rose Red was good but it was okayoverall.I will however say this, Rose Red had some plot holes such as what happenedto Pam? It's as if she went wondering outside for a midnight walk orsomething. It didn't really explained anything about her case. Second, thereare some stupid people in the case where Cathy heds to the kitchen alone toget ice tea. What the hell is she thinking? I thought Joyce said to sticktogether. Third, there was no sympathy between the characters which made mewant them all dead not to mention Emery's mom who I found was the mostannoying person in this film. But enough said, there were lots of holes and I strongly believe that ifStephen King had spent more time on the screenplay, this could have beensomething more and better than those other scary movies but didn't reallyhit it off. I know that a lot of people complained of the amount of time ittook for the story to unfold (precisely a little over 4 hours), but for meit felt kinda short. Time just flew by as I was watching it or maybe I had alot of time to kill. What I like about the movie is that it had some spine tingling scenes butnot over the top gory stuff, the internal design of the house, the darkatmoshere as soon as the psychic people arrived, and the age of the mansionwhich helps set up the spookiness of the film. Overall, I thought Rose Redwas not the greatest but not the worst, but was alright.7/10

Great way to spend an evening

I've always enjoyed "Rose Red" when it was aired on t.v. I have been a Stephen King fan for years. When I found the movie on DVD at such a great rate, I couldn't pass. It's great to be able to watch a "mini-series" without having to deal with the commercials.

Good and Scarry

What a great horror movie! I wouldn't expect anything less from Stephen King because he is such a great writer!

trevixarama 2012-04-25 11:00:11

good head

rose red is a great film that gets your full attention for the full 4hours..the story is great in instantly you feel part of the groupinside the old mansion. if you are right into this type of housepossession/ghost movies, this is one you definitely need to watch.. theacting isn't over the top giving you a sense of realism... if you'relooking for an demonic feel to a movie this is it. i cannot compare itto the normal cheesy type of horrors been made...only "rose red" and"the others" are the two movies of this caliber i watch.... next timeyou have an afternoon or evening free, turn down the lights, close thedoors and enjoy to be spooked..

"Every House Has a Story to tell...This One Will Kill You"

Rose Red, a spectacular miniseries written by horror-master Stephen King and directed by Craig Baxley (Storm of the Century), was shown on ABC in late January 2002. Many reviewers in the media were not exactly excited about this film. I did not see it when it first aired, though I deeply wished to. Eventually, I bought the DVD; I was ready to watch it. I enjoyed it throughly.I think Nancy Travis' role as Joyce Reardon was a little overdone, however. (Maybe Ms. Travis should just stick to Comedy.) I was hypnotized by Kimberly J. Brown's performance as Annie Wheaton, a autistic telepath. I also could not help but love Julian Sands' portrayal as the incredibly witty, incredibly psychic Nick Hardaway. The score is haunting and beautiful, and it makes me wish there was a CD available that had that on it (10 points go to Gary Chang!).As for the movie, I think that the beginning characterization is something that was necessary, and it was a nice switch from the usuaul gore fest you in Horrors today. Bravo, Stephen. The special effects are superb. Flying stones, building houses, close-ups that get your heart going, ghosts that make you afraid of what may be sleeping on the other side of your bed. Not to mention the stunning animatronics made for the role of Ellen Rimbauer. Some people have found it chillingly scary, but I didn't find it all that frightening (And I'm only 13!).Now for the plot. The basic story is much like Shirley Jackson's THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE. (Or was it Hell House?) "Some Houses Are Born Bad". You betcha. This house, which was built in the late 1800s/early 1900s, builds on to itself (To understand more about the history of Rose Red, I highly suggest the page-turner THE DIARY OF ELLEN RIMBAUER: MY LIFE AT ROSE RED). So, crazy Joyce Reardon, obsessed with Rose Red, leads a team of psychics into Rose Red to wake up the supposed "dead cell". Soon, the house's dead spirits, who were never really gone, start to reek havoc and people start disappearing. Everything leads up to dark secrets revealed and a climatic ending that is predictable. The reason why I say FOUR STARS, and not five, is that by the time you arrive to Disk Two of the DVD, after the "statue incident" (You'll know what I mean when you get there), you begin wondering when this movie will end. Though every single part is necessary in my view, I believe it does get slightly long-winded. The Special Effects are quite amazing, however. As for the Special Features of the DVD, there isn't a whole lot. There's original storyboard designs, a 50 minute long documentary on the making of ROSE RED, a fake documentary on Ellen's diary (I think that was supremely creative), artwork, a trailer and Commentary. It does give a in-depth look at everything, but it didn't get me exicted or anything. All in all, I believe it is a great movie to watch when you have an open four hours (insert snicker here). Kudos to King and Baxley for a job well done.

Meets Standards..

*Potential Spoilers*Rose Red, based on the novel by Stephen King, is a creepy haunted housestory where not only is the house haunted, it is actually alive and will eatyou! Good acting done by Nancy Travis, Kimberly J. Brown, and Julian Sandsbrings an old ghost tale up-to-date in this amusing movie. 7.8 out of10.

ang11223 2012-04-23 08:42:54

Wonderful Movie!

The best screenplay, in my opinion, that King has ever done. Not unlikeTHEHAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE by S. Jackson, it has suspense and thrills that Ihave been craving for in a visual for a long time now! Although maybe abitpredictable, I enjoyed every spine-tingling moment of all threeparts.

Ted Gianopulos 2012-04-22 20:32:10

Please Mr. King, Stop making your own movies!!!

It's bad enough making yourself finish a normal length movie thatstarts out bad, but when it is a 4 & 1/2 hr. miniseries, You just wantto punch yourself stupid thinking of the EXTENDED amount of time you'vewasted that you'll never get back.I'll just say that I watched this movie by myself, in my house, with nolights on and after it was over, I turned off the TV, turned over andslept like a baby. That's how terrified I was of this pathetic attempt. The movie was beautiful, it just wasn't scary AT ALL. The whole idea ofvoices being heard is scary for like the first 10 seconds of hearingit, then it just becomes annoying when it is happening throughout theentire film. The sets were awesome but once again, not used to scarethe crap out of people. The puppets of dead people were OK, but notscary. There were so many points where I was predicting the old baitand switch trick, where they open the fridge and close it and there's adead person screaming at you (which scares the crap out of me everytime) and they never took advantage of it. I was to the point of beingpi$$ed off because I wasn't getting scared. The only redeeming factor in this movie was the performance of MattRoss. He seems to be the only one on set who really knew his character,Emery, and played it to the hilt with no indecision. Very unique andeffective choices. This is to Stephen King. If you are going to put your time into writinga movie that is supposed to be scary, why not take it the whole nineyards and actually get a director who knows how to put together a scarymovie? Sam Raimi, Gore Verbinski, David Fincher even Wes Craven. Youcan always take a trip to Japan and get one of the bright new directorswho are making ground-breaking horror flicks that we Americans arealways taking advantage of by re-making all their previous works.
