Sometimes something-simply-of-nothing is very nice to watch like this movie of two friends, home-entertainers, doing their probation for a road accident at the hard-kid-learning center.Regrettably, not everything depends on educative efforts in reality while in this movie, sexually charged and touching a multitude of legal, educative and simply day-by-day problems, happy end was predetermined.Good drag!
I believe that every decade or so, a few films comes along that definesa generation. In the comedy genre as of late, the Apatow gang has beenstealing all the headlines. Superbad will go down as this generationsBreakfast Club or Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Maybe Knocked Up will beknown as the neo-Annie Hall. Up until now I'm not really sure whatwould be known or compared to Beverly Hills Cop. That film is on astage unto itself. Eddie Murphy did something that no one had donebefore him and he spawned a myriad imitations. I'm sure you can seewhere I'm going with this, because although Role Models is not a "copmovie" it is a buddy movie with all the vulgarity and brash comedy asBeverly Hills Cop. Role Models will not make 200 million dollars theway Beverly Hills Cop did but it will be remembered for generations tocome as one of the funniest films of the decade.I'll write a more detailed review of this later, but I had to come hereand rebut all the negative comments in here about this film. This filmhad me laughing from the very first moment. Paul Rudd is simplyhilarious and Jane Lynch could very well be a star after this film. Shehas all the best lines and her line about the judge and the kind ofrelationship they used to have is my choice for funniest line ever inthe history of film. And I'm not exaggerating either.See this film. Yes, it is profanity laced, crude and very vulgar, butdamn it is gut splitting hilarity from start to end.10/10
This was terrible. It teaches some of the worst lessons I have everseen. For example, standing up the the Laire king is shown as wrong, but humbling oneself to him is seen as the right and noble thing. BS.The eventual battle at the end does nothing to make up for this. Theblack kid in the movie curses at everyone and slaps one of the maincharacters, with no censure by his mother other than "watch your mouth"and they put up with it why...? His mother should have taken him acrossher lap. (In fact, cursing in front of kids is rampant in this movie.)This movie seems like its completely conflicted: it has oneundercurrent of by being unbelievably politically correct, and anotherof trying to violate every decency.Don't waste your time.
Danny (Paul Rudd) is unhappy with his life and hates his job as apromoter for a questionable energy drink. His friend Wheeler (SeannWilliam Scott), however, high on hedonism, loves the job of being thedrink's mascot. When it all gets too much and his girlfriend (ElizabethBanks) dumps him, Danny has a run in with the law, leaving the twofriends left with the choice of either 30 days in jail or being mentorsto children. Rudd and Scott are instantly likable as a comedy duo on top form, withRudd injecting ultimate cynicism to his role and proving that he needsto be a bigger star and Scott bringing a slightly matured Stiffler. Abig portion of the laughs also go to Bobb'e Thompson as one of thesharp talking children to be mentored. The plot does fall topredictability and all of the best jokes being placed in the firsthalf, which makes it loose steam as the film progresses. Although therewill be no surprises with Role Models, it is redeemed by havingcharacters and a story that are likable and funny enough for you to putthat to one side and enjoy the humour.
While Role Models can boast the occasionally funny joke, there's little else to recommend this derivative buddy film.
A very funny comedy that celebrates misfits who reach across the generations to salute each other as the wacky and wonderful oddballs they are.
Kansas City native Paul Rudd is not only taking on a new lead role, but is also making an attempt at writing, and let's say it's a good one.
Firstly, I LOVE Sean William Scott in American Pie. THAT is funny, quite surprisingly considering it's premise. Each sequel was equallyfunny and if anything an improvement on the previous. Ultimately theoriginal American Pie series were very funny and broke ground away fromprevious mediocre teen sex comedies by treating sex unexpectedlymaturely - rather like the 40 Year Old Virgin..The films SWS has appeared in have gone downhill. Road Trip was justrepulsive -with no charm whatsoever - was it supposed to be funny thathis running joke was having his ass invaded? Or the disgusting TomGreen.Anyway, this brings me to Role Models. An utterly pointless, formulaicand ridiculous film that looks possibly OK on the trailer but insultseven the least discerning viewer. To top it all, SWS gets distracted from babysitting a foul mouthed andobnoxious black child (was he supposed ro be likable? Were any of thecharacters?) to have sex with an unrealistic slag at a party. He sayshe does not have any contraception and she says she is 'very prochoice' - so they happily have sex. As in, it's OK, I'll abort it.The mind boggles at this pathetically unfunny film aimed presumably atteen kids...
Off the back of some recent 'star studded' comedy let downs like TropicThunder or Pineapple Express comes what I believe to be the comedy tobeat in 2009. The storyline is so formulaic that you would almost groanif someone explained it too you but the actors, writing and overallcharacterisation lift this movie to be much more rewarding. Thedialogue is razor sharp especially from Paul Rudd who is on excellentform (as both actor and co writer) why he is not a bigger star isfrankly criminal. He works excellently alongside Sean William Scott whois at his best here dare I say it as good as his turns in the AmericaPie movies (of which for me he was always the star). Its when working with there younger counter parts that the movie reallyelevates itself from just another laugh at the dysfunctional slackersflick. Christopher Mintz- Plasse has to be commended here especiallyrather than just playing 'Mclovin' again he creates in Augie a muchmore rounded character and I found it hard not to be routing for him inhis Fantasy battles. Bobb'e J Thompson is so adorably obnoxious thathis scenes with William Scott are a joy to watch. I've always likedWilliam Scott and its nice to see him finally lay to rest the ghost of'Stifler'. All in all if you want to laugh your ass off at a greatcomedy with a gifted cast then Role Models is for you I for one will beseeing it again.
It's not often that a film with mortifying first-act problems redeems itself, but somehow Role Models manages to grow in parallel with its characters.
I wanted to like this just because it seemed like a good concept for afilm with these leads. And it does have its share of laughs. But itjust didn't work for me.Perhaps I'm growing tired of movies with Seann William Scott. We mayhave all forgotten that Stifler was, for lack of a better term, thevillain of American Pie. He was a dick we loved to hate, not someone weactually wanted to see succeed. Unfortunately, ever since Pie 2, we'veseen the same character painted with the same brush, yet we're supposedto sympathize with him despite his obvious douchiness.Paul Rudd, on the other hand, is very likable in the cynic role. JaneLynch has a funny supporting role. The kids themselves, includingMcLovin, are well played and easy to like. The whole LAIRE thing isactually very well done and quite funny. Its not a complete waste, just could've been done better. Follows theexact comedy structure to a tee with no real surprises. And Scottshould perhaps try something a little different.
Something bizarre starts to happen around the halfway mark, perhaps because no one knew how to develop the original premise.
Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott are two very funny comedic actors. They prove what great chemistry they have together. Rudd and Scott staras Danny and Wheeler, two ne'er-do-wells who are sentenced to docommunity service. They have to serve in a Big-Brother-type programcalled Sturdy Wings for a total of 150 hours. Danny and Wheeler haveopposite attitudes, yet they get along like they have been best friendsfor years. Jane Lynch (The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Talladega Nights)steals the show as the supervisor of the program that Danny and Wheelerare enrolled in. Elizabeth Banks gives a good supporting turn asDanny's girlfriend and lawyer. Another show stealer is Bobb'e J.Thompson as Ronnie, the kid Wheeler has to be a big brother to.Thompson is given some of the funniest lines and he is believable inthis role.
The movie, like its unlikely heroes, has its pungent moments. At its best, it balances salt and sap.
Admittedly, this is not exactly the kind of film I normally go for, butI found the whole thing rather insipid and tiresome. Compared to recentcomedies that actually attempt to explore ANY larger issue or context(Knocked Up, 40 Year Old Virgin, Stranger than Fiction, or Superbad, for example), this definitely is a huge regression. There is an okay(yet clichéd) story dealing withacceptance/tolerance/be-who-you-want-to be/blah blah, but I found thatany real exploration of real issues and dramatic interest wascompletely undermined by the constant and lazy reliance on easy, cheaplaughs. It is a parade of shock humor that rarely raises above a 6thgrade level of engagement: "Cursing is fun," "Boobies are cool,""You're gay," "Nerds are weird," etc. This kind of humor can be mildlyamusing in small doses to fill the gaps, but as the totality of theentertainment value of a film it can be rather tiring. Granted, thejokes are quick and most are mildly affective. However, the filmcompletely fails to do anything beyond this basic level andconsequently hurts any real cinematic engagement. The entire filmbecomes nothing more than a string of lazy, intellectually insultingjokes. I'm not saying that this or movies like this have to be CitizenKane, but a film that only seeks to embody immature humor is only goingto entertain me so much. Throw me a bone, please. It is not difficult,as the above mentioned films accomplished this feat to at least somedegree. The performances are solid, especially from Jane Lynch and ElisabethBanks, and there is a few good sight gags and chuckles. However, thereis very little real interest in this film; it is hackneyed and devoidof creativity. There is nothing in this film I haven't seen before orcouldn't see coming from a million miles. I had the entire narrativepinned by about 15 minutes into the film and nothing else in the filmmakes up for its structural and cinematic deficiencies. It is stupid, lazy, uninspired and proud of it. If you are interested in somemindless escapism, you could definitely do worse, but you could also doa lot better.4/10
Neither fish nor fowl (or, in this case, "foul"), in its attempt to appeal to audiences both over and under 21, Role Models finds itself betwixt and be-tween-er.
Role Models was a very funny movie and pretty original. It didn'treally have to much of a story but give it credit. The movie isn'tbased on it's story or acting it was all about the laughs and the youngkids swearing was hilarious. It doesn't seem good to have young kidsswearing in movies but it really makes you laugh more than you wouldthink. It was pretty Corny in many different scenes and a lot towardthe end it kind of got a little bit strange. It did all come togetherand make the movie have a little bit of heart. For the whole first halfof the movie everyone was selfish. It takes a lot for the kids andadults to find their the good side in them. I did like how in the moviethey helped each other to both become better people. Overall I thoughtthe movie was good and acting was good everything was just very fun.
There's a constant sarcastic rapport between Rudd and Scott right from the get-go that makes the wholly expected plot developments easier to stomach.
Role Models is one of those crazy mixed up farce comedies that is veryprofane, very silly & stupid at times.I normally hate this type of film, so why am I giving this a thumbs upreview. The answer is simple, the characters are all very likable, granted youwant to strangle one or two at times. Somehow as in real life all turnsout well at the end. That is in comedy films it does. This is anotherof those suspend belief sit back & enjoy. This has a large cast & all are very good. I will just comment on fewof them. The two leads are expertly played BY Paul Rudd & Sean William Scottthey are 'Big Brothers' to 2 troubled lads Bobb'e Thompson &Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Young Chris, is a newcomer to films,I thinkhe will have a huge career.Elizabeth Banks & are also involved. The direction & all other creditsare fine.Another thing I liked is that none of the crazy goings on go too far.Mild thumbs up from me.Ratings: ***(out of 4) 91 points(out of 100) IMDb 7 (out of 10)
Filth and sentimentality -- the yin- yang combo of current guy comedy -- entwine in Role Models with the naughty bits overpowering the funny.
