If you like the 80's rock, you should definitely see this movie! I'veonly seen it recently and completely fell in love with it!Overall, the movie is very entertaining, provides you with a great loadof rock tunes and not a single second of the movie do I find boring! Itwas a great idea that some of the real-life musicians were in this, doing what they do best. I was happy to see Zakk, as well as BlasElias, they all delivered solid performances. I tend to agree with alot of people saying that the first half of the movie was much betterthan the second one, specially in the terms of the script. That couldhave been worked on a bit better, but not a major biggie. One thingthat did bother me a bit was Jennifer Aniston's performance. I thoughtshe wasn't the right person for this role,I just couldn't see her as arock star girlfriend. But as the movie goes on, you somehow realize thatshe did a good job with this. There is a certain amount of honesty andsincerity she delivers that just doesn't live you cold. To summarize, a good and a funny movie, that doesn't go deep intocharacters but provides you with a good fun, a sense of nostalgia andof course the mighty vocals by Jeff Scott Soto and Mike Matijevic!
This movie seemed like a little bit "Boogie Nights", a little bit "SaturdayNight Fever" and a little bit "The Doors", but it definitely had very littleoriginal going for it. Mark Wahlberg played the identical role that he hadin "Boogie Nights" and he played it the same way, nice kid, eager to please, making the audience root for him to succeed. He is pleasing to look at andtruly a talented performer, so that was the high point, but other than hisperformance, there is very little meat in this film and at the end, when wehave all gotten our lesson in rock and roll debauchery, we are sent on ourway with little return for our buck. I would say skip this one and go rent"Boogie Nights", which is a better film with some outstanding performances.
I paid the cheap amount of $2 for this video at a swapmeet and it was just sitting in my room collecting dust. So today, I was bored and just put this in. My dad had told me it was a good movie, so I put it in. I normally don't watch VHS anymore but since this was only 2 dollars, I couldn't resist. I enjoyed this movie very much. There are similarities from this movie and what happened to Judas Priest in '96. Here are the similarities:ROCK STAR:The lead vocalist of a cover band is picked to replace the lead singer in his favorite band.Real Life:A shop owner is picked to replace the lead singer of Judas Priest.ROCK STAR:The lead singer of the rock group is gayREAL LIFE:The lead singer of Judas Priest is gay. I have nothing against gays, but that just had to be mentioned as a similarity. All of the above is true! Anyway, I recommend this movie to anyone who is in a cover (or as Wahlberg says in the movie a "TRIBUTE" band) band or listens to '80s hair metal music like Judas Priest, Ratt, AC/DC, Dio, etc. Watch this movie right now! Plus Jennifer Aniston is great in this movie.
I loved this movie!!! I thought it showed how you can be a rock star if you believe in yourself. Jennifer Aniston really played a good part as his girlfriend/ manager. I first saw this movie on VHS "Movies That Rock" and I just went out and bought the DVD.
I can't see what the other reviewers liked about this movie. Its horrible acting and horrible writing. If all good fiction is based on reality, this film is very close to total failure. Wahlberg plays a character Chris Cole who gets a chance to live out the fantasy of being a rock star and all the perks that go with it: tons of money, gorgeous groupies, drugs and legions of devoted fans. After living out the fantasy, he suddenly wakes up and finds the fantasy is not all its imagined to be. This is about the only realistic part of the film. If this film were based more on FACTS than the writers unrestricted imagination, you might have a good film. The facts are it takes years of very hard work to even have a chance to make it in the music business and that's if you're very lucky. To the people in the music business you are nothing less than a piece of meat to make them tons of cash. If you bomb, they vanish like ghosts. As for the groupies, most of them are not gorgeous. They sleep with rock stars for two main reasons: paternity suits and bragging rights. Ask any rock star and if he is honest he will give you the truth about the music business. If this film were based more on reality you would have a far better plot and believable characters. As it stands its nearly a complete washout. Aniston is not convincing and needs acting lessons.
Ok so I was real excited to see this movie when I rented it. I even hadbeer, and when I have beer its easy to enjoy just abouteverything. And I was really into the true life story of Ripper Owens, the kid who gotto sing for Judas Priest, which this movie was partially based on. I haveastrong feeling in my psychic verberaorations Ripper's life is about 100times more fun than this doo-doo.Its sad because this is a great premise for a story, small time kid whoplays in tribute band actually gets to sing for the band he has beenemulating his whole life. That's super. Well Wahlberg plays thegeekiness/metalness pretty well. But get this, even though he hasdedicatedhis LIFE to loving, imitating, and worshipping this band, he gets allgoofedup over the fact that he can't write their songs now that he actually is inthe band. Suddenly he doesn't know that the guitarist and drummer alwayswrite the songs(That would seem like vital info to a true fan). Suddenlythis is a problem. WHAT? Suddenly lets just ditch our character for theconvenience of a plot turner.Wait I'm getting another vision, Jennifer Aniston in another movie!Basically we get the same ol Rachel character she plays on TV, but withmetal hair. "Be be bebebebeebbebe" whatever the hell she always does. Itsold and terrible. Anyway she play's Wahlberg's girlfriend in the flick andis there to do little more than get happy when he does something good(YAaaaY!) and fret the rest of the time. Oh boo hoo, we're getting intodrugs, oh boo hoo all the other band members' wives are sluts and plus theyhit on me and make me question my sexuality. Yeah boo hoo. This was onlyaDREAM of hers, and Marky Mark's, but now its just upsetting! Women shouldbemore willing to make sacrifices for their men, THATs what Ithink. But folks, this is the KICKER. The movie is almost over, we hope, wethink.Wahlberg's playing in the band and suddenly just DECIDES to take off, handing the mike to some punk KID in the first row and lets him finish theshow. The other members of the band just play on like yeah this is fine. That enables Marky to leave the stage, ON HIS OWN TERMS PEOPLE let it beknown. He turns to the stage manager and goes " I gotta take a p***"(whichis actually supposed to reference something romantic from early on - Justthink of "Good Will Hunting"s line "I had to go see about a girl" buttotally MeTaLized and you've got the idea).THEN, OK THEN... We flash forward a year or two and Alternative rock isin!!Mark has his hair cut alterna-short and is wearing a cute little fuzzyhippy sweater and singing in a smoky coffeehouse. Oh, thank GOD you gotCOOL! Another character ditching!! A true metalhead would never fall sofar. LAME. So here he is belting out this little soft sweet love tunewhilethe other members (made up of the tribute band he was in at the beginning, they had a HUGE fallingout but yet here they are all together at the end,FRIENDS FOREVER XXXXOOOOXXXXXOOOO) back him up, also with cute littlehaircuts and pleasant, loving visages. Then Rachel comes in and he talks so SOFTLY to her its so sweet!!! CUE THECREDITS BABY THAT WAS SUCH A GOLDEN ENDING. Thanks a lot testaudiences!!!So I guess I didn't like it at all. Negative 1 star out of 4. Yes itsthatbad.Oh wait I forgot I wanted to upgrade this one star because they played"GoodVibrations" in the end credits. Ok 0 stars out of 4.
Well, what is there to say about this movie. I just recently had thedispleasure of seeing it on cable and am thanking god I did not pay tendollars or else I would have been quite annoyed. Let's break it down. Youtake two really talentless actors, one who was a member of the funky bunchand one is one of the most annoying t.v. shows on the small screen, add insome really bad musicians from the 80's and you get what is this poorexcusefor a movie. The premise was horrible and the acting was even worse. As ifpeople had not suffered through the hard rock movement in the 80's enough,we have to endure it through third-rate story-telling on the big screen.AllI will say is my condolenses on the people who got ripped off when theyspent their hard-earned money to see this terrible movie with really badacting. I would have asked for my money back as I ran screaming from thetheater, but that is just my unqualified opinion.
Well, if you are like me and came right out of the 80's hair band era, youwill love this movie! They made you feel like you were back at a greatconcert with all the explosions and lights!! The acting was GREAT, fromallthe actors...especially Mark...and WOW, did he look great or what!! Iwantto thank all those responsible for the making of this movie, and thanksformaking remember, what it was like to be from that era again!ROCK-ON!!!
Marky Mark plays a smarter Dirk Diggler in Rock Star. He does shine in this movie as the young kid who gets to play out his wildest fantasy - being the frontman of his fave band. Art imitates life in this film as the same thing happened to one lucky soul who worshipped Judas Priest...By the time we see Wahlberg in full rock star glory, the movie is already starting to unravel. Not enough attention is paid to his life as the rock star which would have been very interesting. The end is pretty anticlimactic but overall this film is entertaining.I'm not sure Jennifer Aniston belonged in this movie. It just seemed like a lesser star could have pulled it off better. It just felt like Aniston has trouble not being "Rachel" in this movie.
This is one of my very favorite "fun" movies. Is it the best movie in the world? No. I was an 80's glam rocker and it speaks to me with the humor and silliness that was part of the scene. Some of the "seriousness" of the musicians is spot on, I saw and experienced some on stage fist fights over such things myself in my life! Watching it never ceases to make me laugh and smile and fill me with nostalgia of my teenage years, and the years I spent working as a band manager and all around "bandmom." There are some great REAL musicians too, Zakk Wylde, Jeff Pilson, and Jason Bonham as the "other" non-actor Steel Dragon members make the music really solid. I saw this in the theater when it came out, and the live concert scenes made me want to raise my fists in the air and bang my head in the theater! Love it! Walberg and Aniston are really cute and believable and I love Walberg's character's kooky, loving family.
What to say about a movie like Rock Star? A lot actually! This is thetype of movie that is almost tailer made for the critics to slam. It isalso a movie I, as a MAJOR Hard Rock fan enjoyed-no-lovedactually-while all the while being very consciously aware of its manyflaws and that the movie, while a decent effort in some respects missedthe chance it had to escape into greatness and become a rock movieclassic. Oh well....I loved this movie-and would see it again and again-but I know that'spurely based on my own personal tastes-Rock Star is a movie that willappeal to anyone who has experienced elements of the rock or hard rocklifestyle and wants to go down the road to nostalgia. It was a greattime for metal heads. And it's nice to have a movie that effectivelycaptures that(long forgot by many non-rock fans.) time effectively, asI think that Rock Star has done. That is one of the film's strengths, the concert footage. You will feel like your right there with them andhow could any hard rock fan not love that? As far as setting theatmosphere Rock Star gets a 10 of 10. It also gets a 10 of 10 for pureentertainment. If you want a movie to just let yourself go and freeflow into some great memories of good times past, then this is themovie for you. It is also the reason why I loved this movie so.But it isn't a great movie. I understand that and were it my actual jobto review movies professionally, I'd probably have to be a bit hard onthis one. The problem with Rock star is the character development. What is wrong with the character development is this, there isn't any.None. The movie has certain scenes-few and far between but they AREthere-that DO touch on greatness:WARNING BRIEF SCENE SPOILERS: 3examples- 1)when Izzy makes his debut on stage(including the fall hetakes)2)The first "after show" party with Emily(Anniston and Izzy.)3)Backtracking a little-In the beginning when the original lead singeris casually dismissed(fired)-the whole "business as usual" tone setsthe stage for what's to come. It's played very effectively. But the problem is, nothing ever does come. There is little to nocharacter development of anyone in this movie, peoples' persona's aremerely touched on, but never fully explored. I don't think that's thefault of the actors/actresses,particularly Anniston who tries hard, they just are not given much to work with. It's just that the scriptwas weak and lacked the ability to go beyond the "formula" feel intotrue movie depth. Rock star was so sugarcoated at times(includingtowards the end) it was almost ridiculous. And , though, those scenes Imentioned WERE outstanding and very believable, sadly much else in themovie wasn't.Another reviewer mentioned the lack of buildup towards the end and Iagree but there was actually a lack of buildup about ANYTHING. WHY doesIzzy leave at the end? Because he misses his girlfriend and the bandwon't let him write songs? It tests the limits of believability. And,frankly the end was just corny. Made no sense and had no reality to itat all.Watching this, it's almost like watching a movie where the makers of itsaid: OK, this happens here and then this happens and then this etc etcetc. By the end it's no longer a movie about a boy who's dream cametrue, it's just another thickly formulated love story. And you wonderwhy so much detail is left out....I hope I'm not being to hard on Rock Star because I truly loved it-butnot for the right reasons. I would have liked to love this as a greatmovie about the highs and lows of rock fame. Instead I loved it forit's 80's period feel, the clothes, the hair, the lights, the life....Although many others loved it to, I suspect most are people who livedthe life of a rock fan, like I did or some who play. I'd have liked tosee the movie cross over and just be respected for being a good, welltold movie, instead of a cliché. I think, one of the problems was thelength. I myself, hate over long films but this was one that reallyshould have been longer, if a movie is done really right, the length isnot even felt-there is just to much to the story for it to be as shortas it was-that's one reason why there doesn't seem to be muchdevelopment of either the story or the human beings portrayed in themovie.So-to wind down-this is a movie you can greatly get into- but not agreat movie. See it for fun. See it for entertainment. See it to goback to that great, great space in time when metal wasn't just a partof life, it WAS life-and for those non rock fans-see it to get a littleglimpse into a life that meant and still means so much to so many ofus.
Rock Star is a very good movie. The great external layer with hard rockmusic and great acting by Mark Wahlberg is used to show the deeper meaningof the film. If you really want to be successful in life, you have tofollowyour dreams. Even if their realization is a disappointment you will noticethe path for Your true happiness.
80's sleazy (glam)rock is like 90's house music or current boybands: it'sboring and has no ideas or ideals. The only thing that makes it a bit 'cult'nowadays is that it's a long time ago, so we can laugh at its sillyness. Toobad 'Rock Star' has no laughs at all, as it must be one of the most boringmovies of recent years.Chris (Mark Wahlberg) is singer of a Steel Dragon tribute band. When he'skicked of the band at the same time the real Steel Dragon singer is kickedof as well, he becomes the next lead singer. You already know how this isgonna end up at that time, with Chris losing it with sex, drugs and r&r andforgetting about his long-time girlfriend/manager, Emily (JenniferAniston). There's way too much (boring) music in this standard formula-packed excusefor a movie and should be avoided for it at all cost. Watch the (over-rated,but still more fun) Almost Famous instead, or even better, a movie aboutreal people playing real music having real emotions, That Thing YouDo.What a stinker. 2/10.
There's really no point in seeing this movie if you have seen an episode of Behind the Music/Where Are They Now?. If only VH1 would play those shows again instead of the crap they play now . . . anyway it's not really that good.
Although I liked Almost Famous too but Rock Star is really my Rock & Rollmovie. Of course the plot is predictable, It isn't like the Doors or AlmostFamous with a biographical story formula, but nobody as in nobody has everattempted to write and direct a story about 80's Rock music and it'slifestyle, This one nailed it right. The problem is, when you put a veryslow exposition of the characters and slow pacing in the film it tends toget boring, Rock Star's plot is well paced and focuses not only on thecharacters but on the music and lifestyle too.The ending wherein Chris Cole(Mark Wahlberg) passes the mic to a wannabe andsees his final glimpse of Rock and Roll accompanying with a very powerfuldramatic rock score is my favorite scene in the film. The Love Story blends well in it too, It is balanced not like Almost famouswherein Rock Music is just a supporting story, Here everybody is a star theCharacters whether big or small roles, the simple plot, the music, everything. For over the years I really missed the 80's music and this is really whatI've been waiting for, A movie tribute to the bands and music of the 80's toearly 90's who are gone and out of the pop scene completely ignored by thisgeneration of today. But there will come a time people will appreciate itsoon, what comes around goes around. And that is the essence of Rock and Roll.A Perfect 10 for a perfect movie!
First of all, the genre of this movie isn't comedy, it's more of a drama.I had low expectations on the movie, and still they didn't come up them.Assome of the other reviews point out, there are some nice music in themovie. But if you want to listen to good music I suggest spend the time lookingatsome concert recording with Bon Jovi, or Mötley Crue, it'll be morequalitytime.Last, if you want to watch a GOOD movie in this rock'n'roll genre, Irecommend "Almost Famous".
this movie is a must have for all those 80's rock fans. the story pretty much seems like its on the same stream as what happened with Rob and Judas Priest. things that make ya go Hummm.anyways the soundtrack is awesome and the movie rocks. Mark and Jennifer do an awesome job. and for those that don't know Mark is formally known as Marky Mark, thought it was pretty clever putting in Good Vibrations at the end credits. but if you liked the tunes from SteelDragon, then you'll love Steelheart, Mike and Jeff's (the TWO, not ONE lead singer of SteelDragon) former band. Both me and my wife are die hard 80's rock fans and we loved this movie.
If you have not seen Rock Star and you are considering seeing it, maybe youshould, because you know the inside of a cinema can be really interesting tolook at, because what's on the screen is so uneventful and boring you'llfind yourself wondering if the curtains near the screen are black or a verydark red. Its not worth wasting any more time typing about this moviebecause I've already lost over an hour and a half of my life thinking how Ishould really be getting out more instead of fascinating about the roofcollapsing taking this horribly awful movie with it.
I was really tentative about this movie at first. Did I really want to relive the big-hair 80s metal band era? Oh, why not. Its harmless fun. So I did. And I enjoyed it.Rock Star works because it doesn't take itself too seriously, even if Chris Cole (Mark Wahlberg) does. Through a strange twist of events, Cole becomes the lead singer of his favorite metal band, Steel Dragon. He fits right in because its a role he's practiced all to well fronting the Steel Dragon tribute band, Blood Pollution. There are all sorts of sub-plots that meander here and there, none of which add much to the film, but they don't seem to detract from it either. I think the thing that makes this film work for me is the chance to live vicariously through Cole. No matter what decade you grew up in, if you liked music, you wanted to be the lead singer of your favorite rock band. This movie lets you watch a kid who got to live that dream, and it was fun to watch.
I seen this movie when it came out. I thought what an average movie. Ihave now realized that this director was ahead of his time. This is agreat movie and great soundtrack. I have seen my share of rock filmsbut although this is far from spinal tap (which I did not like)> Thisfilm does take us into the life of an 80s rocker wanting to be nothingbut. This is nothing more than our inner child wanting to grow up andto be a *ROCK STAR* Yeah I said it. Everyone wants to grow up and be onthe spot light( Weather said or not). This movie just puts you in thecore of emotions and you can almost feel the excitement of Izzy. I mustadmit the acting was less par but still the music and story was enoughto hold you in to it, till the credits rolled. Worth the watchespecially if you are a fan of ye Ole mighty hair bands.
