8 on a scale of 10

This is a very well crafted movie. If you like period pieces, you will likethis film. If you love period pieces, you will love this film. There isnothing wrong with it.My rating system is based upon a movie with no significant flaws as a 9.What makes it a 10 is an intangible. However, as I am not particularly fondof period pieces - unlike every woman I know (swords, horses, knights, etc.), I have to downgrade it from a 9 to an 8.My girlfriend asked me after it was over if I didn't think it was one of themost romantic movies ever made. I thought (but spoke anyway) that I didn'teven think of it as a romance at all. "You've Got Mail or Roxanne or PrettyWoman or When Harry Met Sally are romances - not this one." After quite abit of discussion, we realized the reason why I felt that way was becausethere was no courting as they were already MARRIED. Hum. "So, the minute weget married, the romance ends, huh?" ..... Might need to be looking for anew girlfriend soon.

Rob Roy is another sad page from human history.

I loved Rob Roy. The acting was great, the story tragic, and not because someone dies, but because it exemplifies the cruelty of the British rule on Scotland one more time. Braveheart it wasn't, because Rob Roy didn't have the impact that William Wallace had, but it was a story closer to the humans that we are. It angered me, because I couldn't help them. It saddened me, because of their pain. Good movie, bad taste in the mouth for the evil perpetrated by British rule.

Marred by unnecessary rape scene.

I remember seeing this years ago and thinking it had a lot of merit, a hero who refuses to slander and pays a high price. A well made movie with great acting and beautiful music and scenery. I thought about showing this to my boys, but the other reviewers reminded me of the unwatchable, unnecessary rape scene. The filmmakers did Tim Roth a disservice by thinking this was necessary to enhance his brilliantly evil performance. Brutish and clumsy, and fatal to an otherwise fine movie.

Please start reviewing THIS film...

There are more than enough pro and con reviews posted here togive people an idea what to look at, so I won't bother with that. Iwriting to ask if we could please stop comparing Rob Roy toBraveheart. They are two different films, with two different stories, and share nothing except their locale, a hatred for the British, andBrian Cox. Spiderman and Arachnophobia have about as much incommon. Rob Roy had nothing to do with Braveheart. If you can'tsee the difference, then you're not paying attention. As such, youprobably shouldn't try to review it.

this is movie it at best - better than average

I purchased a used VHS copy of this film and the local Video store, for only$2.99 - I had never seen this film, and I thought it would be something thatI'd like. and the truth is that I do like this film, its not a film I canwatch again and again. I belive the costumes were good, the Acting is 1strate(Liam Neeson is always great-he is one of the best-an interesting sidenote: Big Time Producer Goerge"Star Wars" Lucas loved this film and calledit one of the best films of the 1990's, He like this film so much and likedLiam Neeson's performance in this film so much that he offered Liam the Roleof Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Ginn before he even had the Episode 1 scriptcompleted all based on Liam's performance in this film) What hurt this filmis the Action scenes are are slow and its takes a while for the Action todevelope. And the movie as a whole moves at a slow pace. There were somescenes where I had a hard time telling the good guys from the bad guys, Icould never distinct if that was intentional of the films producer as a wayto create a climate of uncertinty, or if that was just a hole in the plotthat made it sometimes hard to follow. However The Music score in this filmnothing short of Awesome!!! This Movie as a whole is at best - better thanaverage but if you compare this film to other historical epics this filmfalls flat on its face. I put this film in the same Catagory as Barry Lyndonas a film that is a good film but misses the mark of greatness. I give it 3out of 5 stars.

Good solid acting all round

ROB ROY was, if you like, the predecessor of BRAVEHEART - it seems thatevery cinematic cultural icon seems to have a 'training ground' - even withthe biggest directors this is true - many people say of SCHINDLER'S LISTthat it was Spielberg's first look at the serious issue of war. But whatabout EMPIRE OF THE SUN?ROB ROY is just such a film, only really coming to light after the successof it's younger prodigy. Dealing with very much the same sentiment (andhatred towards the English!), this is a cracking film! Liam Neeson turns ina first-class performance as the heroic Scot, and gives his stylist a dummyrun for STAR WARS! Jessica Lange is equally powerful as his long sufferingwife. Although Tim Roth's bad guy is maybe a little too comic-book for thereality of the film, he certainly makes this particular Brit none too proudof his roots!

Good Period Piece

Kind of like Braveheart, based a little on fact and fiction. Liam Neeson is great, Lange never better. Good plot, Roth plays a great bad guy. Lot's of action and excitement.

The fictional cousin to Braveheart

"Rob Roy" (1995): Think of this film as the fictional cousin to"Braveheart". Liam Neeson and Jessica Lange star in the Scottish taleof a hero of the people, who faced great adversities, gained manyscars, but never lost his honor or courage. Coming out the same year asits Celtic cousin, "Rob Roy" is full of incredible landscape scenery, gritty examples of life for the average person in the 17th century, and, plenty of glimpses into the world of conniving wealth, taking whatone chooses, and wearing the tackiest of clothing. Fops – to say theleast. Neeson does a good version of what he knows – the humane, passionate yet stoic hero. Lange pushes further, giving a wider rangeto her character. Tim Roth, the Swishing Weenie of Fopdom, is the manyou'll love to hate. If you're in the mood for an epic legend, this isa good one.

The Marquis of Montrose and the Duke of Argyll were Scottish

This is a very enjoyable film and I would recommend it. However, the Marquis of Montrose and the Duke of Argyll were Scottish, NOT English. For some reason, if a Scotsman is persecuted in a film, everyone has to assume it is the English, even if the persecution was commited by a Norman, a German, a Scotsman or anyone else. I do wish that Hollywood would make films that were accurate to history or in this case to literature. Please stop vilifying the English with no justification.

Braveheart it ain't....right...now you're interested!

Utterly fantastic, sombre, sober and honest (if not actually accurate) account on film of a Scottish Legend. In fact all the things that 'Braveheart' is not. The sword play, spectacular as it is, is as nothing to the word play..."He cannot tell the difference between 'Arse' and 'Quiny'"..."Aye my Lord, I understand a great many Englishmen suffer that complaint". Jessica Lange is perfect, well I fell in love anyway, and the whole cast are terrific particularly Tim Roth who is 'Villain' personified. There's a measure of involvement in this film. Whereas with Braveheart (as a matter of Fact, with Gladiator too) all I really remember is a love story followed by a lingering death. He fights a battle painted an unlikely colour and at the end he takes an age to die...with Rob Roy I remember a love affair within a marriage...but more than this I remember intrigue...duplicitousness...dialogue (Can't remember a word of BH unless you count the 'Freedom' blue faced bit), and I remember the action in Rob Roy. With Baveheart all I remember is that there IS a battle scene...I cannot remember any small detail of it (can you?), and yet this is the films entire Raison d' être.I think it impossible not to compare the two and I shall end with the fairest comparison to decide the winner. Quite apart from the fact that Liam Neeson is at least a man you might follow into battle, (hands up all those who would entrust their lives to Gibson...well there's always one isn't there). In both films the love interest is wronged and used to hurt and provoke our brave heroes, the difference is that 'Braveheart' needed this injustice to explain itself, its cinematic existence, to its audience.....'Rob Roy' did not.

Braver than Braveheart

Mel Gibson's Braveheart was a spectacularly accomplished film, but it left asour taste in the mouth. Rob Roy, by contrast, is slightly less polished, but a better film by far. This is a historical film which combines timelessthemes with truly historical values, whereas Braveheart put a gross andunpleasant comtemporary gloss on an ancient tale. What makes this film isthe cast. Liam Neeson plays the hero, in a role he basically reprised (in awatered-down fashion) in the Phantom Menace. The character is heroic, butis neither the greatest fighter nor the most demonic lover. Admirable yethuman, he commands the screen. Against him are set a selection of equallyhuman adversaries including Tim Roth's Cunningham, obnoxious but brilliant, and John Hurt's morally bankrupt laird. Also to praise is Jessica Lange, asRob's pragmatic wife: also strong and noble, but 300 years away from amodern heroine, which is only as it should be. This is not the mostoriginal film you will see, but it has the courage of its own convictions, and the strong performances make you care.

Semi weak transfer

This review is from: Rob Roy [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) Don't expect this to be like Braveheart. It is not as epic or grand. This is a more personal story that takes place between a small cast of characters. There is plenty of romance, intrigue, violence, revenge, and drama to please a wide variety of viewers; just don't go in comparing it to larger films. The tranfer is weak compared to other films, don't know if it is because it is less well known or what.Still worth a try.

Better than the 'award winning' Braveheart!

This film is simply brilliant! The movie is painfully realistic with its unconventional hero striving on abasis of honour and duty. The movie has tones of facing all odds whilebeingtrue to oneself and overcoming enemies in the face of persecution.Liam Neeson, Jessica Lange & Tim Roth do an overwhelming job about bringingthis wonderful screenplay to life and I believe that what it lacks inpublicity it makes up for in worth. This film, I'm happy to say, won't beconsumed by the mass, but valued by the few.

Definitely not Sir Walter Scott's Rob Roy, but....

....it's a great story nonetheless! The scenery is beautiful...the costumes authentic, the swordplay was marvelous! O'Sullivan's March by the Chieftains was a perfect choice for the soundtrack! Definitely a movie you have to watch two or three times to really appreciate. Reminder's of what's really important in life abound in this film...the importance of a man's word, importance of the family, etc. One of my favorites!

Honest

Whether or not the story is true, Rob Roy is an honest film, containinghonest performances from all the principals (though special mentionmust of course go to Liam Neeson for a Rob Roy of rock-hard integrityand Tim Roth for a reptilian Cunningham). The film looks wonderful and is always gripping: underdog vs superiorforces always works in securing the audience's involvement. The division between plot and action works well - the story is complex, but delivered in such a way that it is easy to assimilate. And, as someone who enjoys movie swordfights - starting withFlynn/Rathbone - the climactic fight between Rob Roy and Cunningham is,I think, the most visceral swordfight ever committed to celluloid. Assomeone else commented, you really believe that these two men areintent on killing each other. More, you believe that Cunningham has itin mind to play with Rob Roy beforehand - to torment him to the limitof endurance before putting him to death, and this gives the conclusionof the duel a grim satisfaction. And then compare it to Gibson's meretricious tosh...

My Favorite Movie?

Just finished watching this film once again, randomly caught on aSunday morning.....THE best time for watching movies I have found.Every once in awhile one is asked to profess a favorite movie. Afterseveral watchings over a period of 14 years since the original release,I am ready to unapologetically announce to anyone who cares to know, that Rob Roy is My Favorite Movie. As to why this movie effects me so, I think it must be the perceivedhistorical accuracy combined with the eloquence of the old worlddialogue. And of course the actors and direction had to be great inorder to make me believe so heartily. Although the dialogue is somewhatdifficult to keep up with, at least the effort is often rewarded withsome incredibly memorable lines that are beautifully structured. I justcan't think of any other film that captures language and historicalmoments as artfully and poetically as this one. So until I find anotherthat does, Rob Roy will be My Favorite Movie. To borrow from Rob Roy's response to the Duke of Argylle after thefinal sword fight that he'll know who to bet on next time..........mayI live so long........to see another movie that is better than Rob Roy.

great historical epic

It's unfortunate that this movie came out almost at the same time as "Braveheart" did--although I found "Braveheart" to be a very good film, I like "Rob Roy" much better. For one thing, there's a lot more character development in "Rob Roy". Aside from the title role, which was wonderfully played by Liam Neeson, the characters played by Jessica Lange and (especially) Tim Roth were very well developed both by the screenwriters and the actors. This relates to another reason why I prefer "Rob Roy" to "Braveheart"--even though this is a historical drama, the story is very personal, dealing with one man's struggle to right a wrong. Incidentally, when "Rob Roy" came out 5 years ago, I read that there were scenes left on the cutting room floor which would have been of great interest to those of us fans of Mr. Neeson's who are of the female persuation! May I respectfully suggest a future release of a "director's cut" of "Rob Roy" which will satisfy the curiosity of said fans?

"All Men With Honor Are Kings"

Released in '95, the same year the blockbuster hit `Braveheart' won just about every award in sight, the smaller scale period film `Rob Roy' came and went rather quietly even though it had much to offer. `Rob Roy' is first class entertainment boasting breathtaking Scottish landscapes, intoxicating stand alone soundtrack, strong script, well choreographed fighting sequences, a powerful performance by Liam Neeson as Rob Roy and Tim Roth as one of the most delightfully evil adversaries ever to grace the silver screen. The sequences when Neeson and Roth are together are absolutely electric and powerful. To find a worthy comparison in the annals of filmdom one would have to go back to Errol Flynn and Basil Rathbone in the `40's to find their equal. As other reviewers have stated the only thing keeping this movie from -5 Star- status is overall consistency. There are spots here and there where the action lags, generally occurring when Roth is absent, but those lapses are more than made up for by the classic confrontation at the end of the film.Another big plus for 'Rob Roy' is found in the repeatability factor. You can watch this one over and over again with all the enthusiasm you had on your initial viewing. This one definitely belongs in your personal DVD library. My Rating: -4 1/2 Stars-.
