Cute movie

This review is from: Rio (DVD) I purchased this movie for my two kids. They absolutely enjoyed it. My husband and I watched it with them. We highly recommend it for adults as well. Great story line!

Some live-action films set in exotic locales can be so atmospheric and picturesque that viewers walk away feeling as if they've taken a short vacation. "Rio" accomplishes this feat, which must be a minor miracle for an animated movie.

Great, even for adults!

The story line was very cute and I loved the casting! Also the music was very good for the movie. It can be sad sometimes but overall I loved it! Very, very cute!

As kids' movies go, "Rio" brings a lot to the party.

Rio soars!

I love animated films. I suppose I've never really grown up. Or maybe it's just that I want a guaranteed happy ending.Rio opens in a South American jungle with a baby blue macaw who falls from his nest and is immediately snatched by poachers, who take him to the US--Minnesota, to be precise. When his crate falls off a truck in the snow, the frightened, shivering little guy is found by a young girl, Linda, who takes him home with her.Fast forward fifteen years: Linda (voiced by Leslie Mann), now an adult, owns a bookstore. The macaw, Blu (voiced by Jesse Eisenberg, whose sister, Hallie, coincidentally, shared the screen with another talking bird, Paulie), is her constant companion. All is well in their lives until the arrival of Tulio, an ornithologist from Brazil. He explains that Blu is the last male of his species, and he's needed in Brazil to mate with the last female to perpetuate the species. Linda initially refuses, in spite of Tulio's insistence that the future of the blue macaw is at stake. Finally, she changes her mind and they're en route to Rio.They arrive as the city is preparing for Carnivale. It's not love at first sight for Blu and the female macaw, Jewel (voice of Anne Hathaway, one of my favorite actresses). She's a beautiful but feisty creature bent on regaining her freedom. Left alone to get acquainted, she's focused on her jailbreak--until they're both snatched by a young boy, Fernando, working for a smuggler.Being forced to work together to escape isn't easy for the wild Jewel and domesticated Blu, who can't fly! I love the way she refers to him as "pet," as if it's a dirty word. Jewel has quite a temper.Blu and Jewel manage to escape their captors--but chained together, they initially find themselves bickering most of the time. As you might expect, however, they soon begin to warm to each other. Assisted by several other birds and a bulldog (voice of George Lopez), they no sooner are freed from the chain that's held them together than Jewel is again captured.Meanwhile, as they search frantically for the missing birds, bookish Linda and hopelessly nerdy Tulio bond. Helped by the guilt-ridden orphan boy who stole them to start with, they end up chasing the smugglers into the big Carnivale parade. There, Linda and Blu see each other...but Blu chooses to go after the smugglers' truck, to rescue Jewel.Linda and Tulio race to the airstrip but are too late. The plane takes off in spite of their efforts to stop it. Blu manages to free all of the birds from their cages and open the cargo doors, but finds he's the only one who can't fly away. Jewel refuses to leave him and is injured in a fight with evil cockatoo Nigel, who works for the smugglers. Will Blu find the courage to fly and save himself and Jewel? Will he and Linda return to Minnesota...or will Linda find happiness with Tulio and Fernando and stay in Rio? Will Blu and Jewel save their species with a new generation of blue macaws? It's worth seeing Rio to find out!

Rio Movie Review From Parrot Owner's Perspective

The movie Rio was finally released in theaters today after many monthsof anticipation. This is perhaps the largest and most prominent featurefilm centered around parrots ever. From a parrot owner's perspective, this is my impression of the movie as well as the realism of parrotownership that it conveys. The story opens in the forest outside off Rio De Janeiro where birds domorning song and dance ritual. While the singing/dancing is of coursepersonified, it certainly alludes to the natural morning song thatbirds sing.We get our first glimpse of Blu, the movie's hero, as a baby in a nestcavity. Parrots nest in cavities rather than building nests on branchesso this was an accurate depiction. Blu is captured by poachers andsmuggled to Minnesota. Like in half the pet featured movies out there, the crate carrying the hero character falls out of a truck and isdiscovered by the future owner. Not only does this make the ownerappear benevolent for saving a lost animal, but it also absolves theowner from responsibility for buying into the illegal pet trade. However, there is actually some truth to the matter.Rio is actually partly based on a true story and a real species ofMacaw. The movie simply refers to Blu as a Blue Macaw, however, at alater point in the movie Cyanopsitta Spixii species is mentioned. TheSpix Macaw is one of four Blue Macaw species and was endemic to Brazil. However, due to poaching and deforestation of their natural habitat,Spix Macaws went extinct in the wild in the year 2000. Nonetheless, over 60 Spix macaws have been known to remain in captivity after theirwild counterparts went extinct. Two years after the last Spix wasobserved in the wild, a veterinarian in the the United States wasshocked to be consulted by an owner of one in Denver.Presley was estimated to be 25 years old and DNA confirmed to be a maleSpix Macaw. In the movie, Blu was unable to fly although he was fullyfeathered. Presley on the other hand became accustomed to a life downlow from being clipped. Presley, like Blu, also ended up in hiscaretakers possession by chance rather than being bought.See the full review on http://TrainedParrot.com/Rio

Guided by the native wit and instinct of Brazilian director Saldanha, the (3D) action soars between the rooftops and party-crowded streets to the surrounding cliffs and jungles with barely any drop in tempo.

Rio

when I got this movie out of the video store to rent it to see for the 1st time I was amazed. I thought the story was great about Blu learning how to fly and meeting the other birds of Rio De Janerio. I always thought Rio De Janerio was in Africa. I was wrong. This movie shows a lot of explenation about each character. Once again, 20th Century Fox releases a new deep animated and well organized film. They had also said that the film was going to look somewhat like the birds in the angry birds app and they did.

Vibrant and Funny!

I loved the movie Ice Age and when I heard this was from the same studio I figured I'd give it a chance, even though I don't really like birds. I didn't think the movie could be so active and fun to watch with a bunch of boring birds as the main characters. I was wrong, the birds are great and there are even a few other animal characters! The animation and colors in the movie are so vibrant and rich that it was hard to not watch it! The movie is about two birds who are amongst the last of their species and are expected to mate. The birds then get kidnapped and struggle to escape. Blu was raised as a housebird and therefore never actually learned to fly! The story is set in Brazil which is a unique and fun environment to set the story in. There are also some great voices behind the characters, especially Blu's voice (Jesse Eisenberg from The Social Network.) My husband and I watched this with our 3 and 4 year old but honestly I would watch it again without them. It is a cute story and the animation is really incredible. Great for the whole family regardless!

A Colorful film that needs more originality

Rio is about an orphan bird named Blu (Jesse Eisenberg) who was raisedby a book-seller named Linda (Leslie Mann). A bird scientist, Túlio(Rodrigo Santoro), informs her that Blu is the last male of his racecalled the Spix's Macaw. Túlio has found a female to introduce Blu to,but Linda and Blu will have to travel to Rio De Janeiro. Blu and Jewel(Anne Hathaway) are then stolen by smugglers. Blu can't fly so theyseek help from a Toucan named Rafael (George Lopez.) Rio is a film witha great voice cast, and 3D effects that you would consider "eye candy".However the story is far too predictable, and not all of the charactersare memorable. Most of the jokes have been used many times before, butwhen some of the jokes seem new, they can be really funny. Somecharacters are likable: Jewel for being strong yet also stubborn,Rafael who is helpful and wise, but my personal favorite character isNigel (Jemaine Clement) the antagonist of the movie, for the solereason of being evil and enjoying every minute of it. Some scenes looktoo familiar; Carnivale looks like the Mardi Gras parade from ThePrincess and the Frog. Nigel says one of the most overused linesvillains say after their minions fail their mission, "I shouldn't havesent monkeys to do a bird's job." So Rio can be fun and colorful forsome audiences, but predictable for others. If you want to see ananimated flick with catchy tunes, this is the movie for you.

Would've been better if it had more comedy and was written better

This movie has some charm, but has very little comedy and bad writing hinders it a bit. This movie is okay overall. It would've been better if its obvious flaws were fixed. 7.5/10

Rio is a leap forward in quality and the finest work from Fox Animation.

MaryAnn 2012-05-19 15:27:30

Run not walk to this movie!

Saw this last evening with my 11 year old. All I can say is man, this movie was terrific. I honestly can't stop thinking about it. These kids movies (if you could call them that)- because they are geared for adults as well, just get better and better. This is on the top of my list, just as good as Toy Story 3 and some of the other biggies. If you want a movie that has a great story and fantastic visuals and you genuinely want to lol, then go see this movie. Young or old, it is over the top enjoyable.

happy

This review is from: Rio (DVD) Received the time movie in a very timely manner and it played just fine. Granddaughter and I have throughly enjoyed it.

Bursting with color and rippling with samba rhythms, Rio makes you wonder why animated films haven't spent more time in Brazil. The place is tailor-made for a 'toon, with rainforest birds and Carnival revelers alike in gloriously surreal plumage.

Don Groves 2012-05-17 15:18:29

Bird-brained animated comedy that won't fly.

Alex Zane 2012-05-17 05:09:47

Altogether a superb addition to the ever-growing list of excellent 3D animation.
