The Umbrella corporation is one of the most powerful companies in the world. Unknown to the world, its success is due to a secret underground lab where viral weapons are tested and made. A new virus that the company created escapes, turning hundreds of scientists into flesh hungry zombies. The main computer shuts down the labs for risk of infection. A special task force is sent in to shut down the main computer and quarantine the deadly virus. What awaits them is beyond ordinary procedure.
Resident Evil turned out a bit better than expected. It's a quite goodaction/SF/thriller with execellent shooting and stunning effects. Fromwhat I had read the plot would be a bit thin, and true enough thesimplicity of it, is the weakest point of the movie. That said, I stillthink the acting is quite good all around, especially considering thestory they had to work with. The characters simply come over asbelievable. It's like everybody believe in the universe that is theessence of the story, which makes it real, even if is not deeppersonality that is explored here. The above together with some reallygood graphics and picture effects makes it a movie worth seeing. As forthe thriller part some of the scenes and effects were quite shocking -in a good sense. The pace is fast like Aliens (2) so that yourattention is kept on the screen, even if not up to overall level ofthat movie. I gave it a 7.
OK I am a massive fan of Resident Evil the movie but I think I spotteda possible flaw or two in the film. In the scene where everyone isgetting killed in the tunnel when the last man (the coloured guy) isabout to get killed the laser becomes a giant cris-crossed wall thathits the man. In a scene seconds later it shows the rest of the peoplesbodies lay there. My question is when the laser becomes the wallwouldn't there bodies get cut up as well. Also what happens to thebodies when Alice returns later. That never gets explained. Pleaseconfirm or tell me if I am wrong cheers!Dandeman03
I thought it was AWESOME! Its kinda one of those movies where youeither have to hate it or love it. I loved it. Michelle Rodriguez (RainOcampo) was awesome. Milla Jovovich (Alice) I think really did a goodjob...they even did almost all of there stunts! Some of the Goofsposted, you wouldn't know about unless you watched the commentary (Idid of course). A lot of the things are really unnoticeable. Thehandwriting continuity was pretty bad though but I didn't realize ituntil the second time I watched the movie. I didn't watch thecommentary until the 3rd time I rented it so I didn't know about thefloor flexing in the elevator scene until I watched the commentary...Ireally liked how the director didn't shove the zombies in your faceuntil like half-way through the movie. One of the reasons I reallyliked the movie was BECAUSE they didn't find out how to kill the undeaduntil the Red-Queen chamber scene. I didn't enjoy the second one(Resident Evil: Apocalypse) BECAUSE they already knew how to kill themand it wasn't as much of the learning curve as in the first one. Ireally enjoyed this movie and I plan to get it for X-mas... Yes I lovedit that much!
Resident Evil just flat out kicks butt! The cast is a group of virtual unknowns... but they all are greatactors and actresses, able to fall into their roles withbelievability....The action is TOP NOTCH - with lots of fighting and zombie action andrunning around and everything...SPOILERS MAY LIE BELOW - BE WARNED!!!When RED QUEEN, the computer of the Hive, in which Umbrella Corporationcreates chemical and medical formulations, realizes that there has beena breech in security and that some of an experimental virus has gottenout, she does what any computer (read: uncaring intelligence) would do- kill any and all beings in the Hive and shut it down, not allowinganything (or anyone) to escape...Some of the deaths are just simple - using Halon or some other type ofchemical, the oxygen is removed from rooms and people die.... or theroom is flooded and people drown.... or the elevator drops hundreds offeet and crashes to the bottom of the shaft.... or it moves quickly, snapping the head off anybody stupid enough to poke it out the doors...Well, there are some drawbacks to the Red Queen's actions.... IncludingKILLING all of the people that work and live in the Hive.... And, asthe deadly T-Virus is on the loose, which is chemically created tore-animate dead tissue, all of those same workers come back to life -with only the most basic of brain functions going - those that willkeep them alive - breathing and eating... what do they eat?!? Livingcreatures.... Through this movie, we get an expansion on the Resident Evil video gameseries, giving us more back story into the T-Virus and the creaturesthat inhabit Raccoon City (far above the Hive). We learn a lot abouthow the virus escaped into the population - although not a lot abouthow it goes SO big in Raccoon City.We meet an elite force of security officers of Umbrella Corporation, whose job it is to shut it all down... many die along the way, gettingkilled by zombies and dogs and brain suckers and the Red Queen's uniquesecurity systems... This film is NOT for the feint of heart when itcomes to gore - both realized and intimated.....The end of the movie leaves enough unraveled threads to allow for asequel (see RESIDENT EVIL:APOCALYPSE - released in 2004) for more....And enough threads are resolved, giving you closure and allowing themovie to stand well enough on its own.... a 9 out of 10!
Of course this film could have been better. It explains pretty well thesituation of the Umbrella Corporation and it's lethal intentions. Theaction is okay and the plot is simple enough. However I was slightlyunsatisfied. As much as I like Milla Jovovich, I think this could havebeen a much more successful franchise if Jill Valentine was kept themain character, not some fictitious woman caught in the middle.Jovovich's character adds mystery to the film, it may be gory andconcentrated on violence and heavy metal music background, but it isstill interesting and you will be curious as to what's going to happen. The only characters I wanted to see live were Alice and her friend whois transformed into Nemesis at the end, and there is little chemistrybetween characters until the action gets going. A bad side to this filmis the CGI tongue-licker creature, paper-marcher anyone?
I never play video games, so I have no attachment to the theme. I sawthe sequel a year ago and thought it was lame and derivative, though Iliked Milla. I also thought she was the best part of "The FifthElement", acting against one of the worst movie killers of all time,Bruce Willis. (OK, he put in a few good roles here and there.) So, Igot the DVD of RE and it blew me away. The production value was farsuperior to almost any of those techno-cyber-man-vs-computer flicks, along with it being better than most zombie and action movies ingeneral. It had the same sort of set and theme as the original 70'stechno-science thriller, "The Andromeda Strain". The acting andcharacters were spartan but right on cue. Though most of the teammembers tended to look alike, they all had some personality and actedmore like real people than some soul-less, Ahnuld type killingmachines. Milla's body language was excellent, and she was sexy withouthamming it up an ounce. She deserved an Oscar and is a pleasure towatch. THough the one scene where she kicks out the mutant dog waslame. Her character suffered from amnesia due to a nerve agent in thebeginning and there was a dream like sequence when she awakes on thefloor of her shower and is utterly blank. That scene was filmed in ahuge German mansion that the Nazis and Communist used for a retreat, done in red, as her skimpy dress she wears. She has to reconstruct herpast while battling zombies, genetically engineered killing animals andthe Red Queen, or the AI program that runs the hive. But she alwaysmaintained her humanity and femininity throughout the horrors she facedand fought. She was paired with Michelle Rodriguez, doing her machalatina schtick as one of the security team members. But the two of themactually complemented each other and it worked well. Michelle Rodriguezas Rain Ocampo offered up some pretty decent comic relief and linestoo! The sets and mechanical efx are great, but the cgi beasts were weaker. The cinematography and editing were first rate. The soundtrack waspulsing techno that drove the already good plot along, it was greattoo. In short this movie set a benchmark for all thosecyber-mutant-techno-action-zombie movies that few will beat. Throw usthe action, but at least have real people and great but spare efx. It'ssequel, of course, was a turkey compared to this. It was made inEurope, which explained it's good techno style, Funny, but my manGeorge A. Romero was supposed to direct it, but gave up. I don't thinkit would have been as good. Basically, this movie first rate period.
Frankly, I can't STAND the Resident Evil video games; they're slow and pointless. But for some reason, I truly enjoyed the movie. Maybe it's because it has nothing to do with the games; or maybe it's because I just enjoy seeing zombies get killed. Whatever it is, I recommend this movie to anyone who's in the mood for a solid action flick.
I've seen some of the other reviews and you have people saying that thisfilm is full of gore, and they couldn't be more wrong, i am a fan of thegameand of 80's horror films and with todays special effects i was expecting ablood bath, now ask yourself whats the point of making a zombie film withbloodless effects. This was the major problem that i had with this film. Ihope that Paul Anderson corrects his mistake and makes Resident Evil 2kneedeep in gore. Overall the story was simple and worked with the film, thefilm itself is GOOD not great. As a fan of the video game i wasdisapointed,i just hope the sequel is better. I give this film 6 out of10
I am a huge fan of the video game series; I've played & completedalmost every Resident Evil game there is. When the film was announced Ithought it was going to be rubbish because mostly films that are basedon games are completely crap especially the ones made by Uwe Boll, butI still went to see it the first day when it came out in the UK and itwas sooooo amazing. I was speechless after I seen the film, the storyis truly original and one of the best thing about it is that the first10 minutes was slow & peaceful but then it went really fast &relentless just like a roller-coaster going up slowly & zoomed down.Paul W. S. Anderson has proved that he is terrific writer & directorbecause it is extremely difficult to create a story for a film that isbased on a video game. Milla Jovovich was undoubtedly the best and Iloved her red dress to bits, it definitely did suit her. Watching thefilm gives you a deep insight of the game e.g.When they had about 3 hours limited time to complete their mission.Every time they enter a new place it had to be checked and they had tomake sure it's safe just like in every game.If they where trapped they had to find another way out.In the end Alice & Matt got out without killing all the zombies becauseResident Evil is rather a puzzle game and killing is not necessary. The combination of action, horror & thriller is superb; they are myentire favourite genre. It had a lot of style and the use of advancedmodern technology that is mostly I look for in a film, the Licker inthe end was the icing on the cake. This is the only movie that I likedwith zombies in it because most of them are stupid & boring especiallyHouse of the Dead, the zombies pop out of nowhere and attack people. InResident Evil the creation of zombies was very sensible, the staff ofthe underground laboratory were infected by the T-Virus released intothe air vent, after getting killed by the Red Queen to avoid anyoutside interference their dead bodies were reanimated. It is mentionedvery clearly that why they "need to feed", nothing like that has everbeen in any film which makes the story original. Dialogues are alsogood my most favourite quote is "You're all going to die down here"from the Red Queen, she is one of the best characters along with Alice,Matt & Rain. Background music score is the best music possibly for anyfilm I have ever heard it has heavy metal guitar for the fight scenesand very soft, eerie & sensational for the main title. I have thesoundtrack CD and I bought it just for the background score withoutcaring that the other tracks might be good or not but it did turn outto good. There is nothing more I can ask for in a film that makes itone of my all time favourite movies and there is never going to beanother film based on a video game like this!
If your a fan of the Resident Evil Video games you'll love this movie, eventhough it's not based on any of the games it has parts of one and two inthere and it looks like theres gonna be a sequel, which i am hoping andwaiting for.
Being a fan of zombie-movies and the biggest Resident Evil fan in theNorthern Hemisphere, I loved this movie. The scenery was superb. Some ofthe shots are taken directly from the game and give any true Re fan afeeling of coming home. This has been my most anticipated movie for along, long time. The plot is fairly basic but works very well: An experimental virus hasbeen released in a top secret, underground facility. A team of highlytrained, highly equipped "problem solvers" working for the UmberellaCorporation is sent in to take control of the situation. As they enterthesuperficial cover of the mansion that is the entrance to the installation,The Hive, they find an unconscious Alice(Milla Jovovich) and a cop namedMatt(Eric Mabius). After acquiring their two new members they break intoTheHive and the fun begins. The computer "brain" of the Hive has gonehomicidaland wants to kill everything within its grasp. After they go undergroundtheaction starts to run together and be non-stop, but in a Very good way.Possibly lurking around every corner is a zombie or something much, muchworse. The scene to really watch for is when the team enters the corridoroutside the main computer control room. Also not to be missed is the nudescene Milla Jovovich did. HOT HOT HOT!!! This movie works on so manylevels. It is a great movie that really entertains and has a thumpin'soundtrack. ROCK ON PAUL ANDERSON. Hurry up with the sequel.
I loved this movie it is kind of true to the video games to an extent. The film was DEFENATLY under rated. Listen if you don't like it fine, but if you comment about the story, plot, and zombies thing then you're bringing it down. Every movie and video game has something good about it. You have to give things a try or else you might miss out on a great thing... If you know the games it helps to learn about the movie. I say this is a MUST HAVE for anyone who likes the resident evil series. I know I will have it in my Movie library and I know I will be constantly watching and letting friends borrow this movie for many years to come. Also I can't wait for the other movies to come out.
I've got to write something to at least slightly counter the bad vibespeople are putting out about this film.No it's not the scariest film ever made, I'll give that, and maybe it's notlike the game, but who gives a shit. But the production values are great, the acting is good. Milla and Michelle kick arse, look good doing it andthey can act. It's a pity the only strong male character, the squad leader(name?) got sliced and diced. Oh and the CGI isn't top of the line, but whogives a rats, seeing the strings in Blakes 7, Dr who, Thunderbirds or thematte lines in the Star Wars never stopped anyone except the anal fromenjoying them. I didn't even know what this film was about before i saw it,so i was rolling around on the floor in fits when i realised it was a zombiefilm, but i quickly composed myself and got into the swing of it and enjoyedit.Yeah, I liked it and there I stand.
Havent played any of the games so had no extra reason to watch other why i'dnormally watch a film. First off I knew that 'Rain'(Michelle Rodriguez)would annoy the feet off me with that dumb mean look she feel she must haveon her face and was waiting for it getting ripped off. Second I wish ColinSalmon had more of a role as he just out shined everyone on with him thatmoment with his strong voice and presence also it's nice to see a black manin a movie these days that isn't all "yo yo big it up da bong me boy"7/10
Resident Evil, sounds scary does it? Wel it was. I liked it alot others didnt but I thought it was great! It was that zombie thriller that the U.S.A. has bee looking for for years!
Y'know, I've often said that movies are like music. There's no decidingwhether something is bad or good, it's in the eye of the beholder. Thismassof people saying that this movie is the best zombie movie ever though, Imean c'mon people! First off, the Evil Dead Trilogy is scarier than thisfilm, and I just saw those 3 movies for the first time last week. Thosefilms were't even supposed to be scary, and had really small budgets, butwere 10 times more fun.In response to everyone saying you get to see Milla Jovovichnaked...(Sarcasm begins now)OH WOW! I got to see half of Milla's nipple! OH MY GOD! The promised landdoes exist! Oh please God, just let me see a full nipple one day, and Ipromise I'll never sin again!(End Sarcasm)Anyway, if I want to see Milla naked, I'm sure she's posed for Playboy orsomething, and you saw more in the Fifth Element anyway. Plus she wasyounger and looked a lot better in that film.I hate Michelle Rodriguez. She's not hot in my opinion and she's playedpretty much the same role in every movie she's been in. At least mostactorswho get typecast try to break away. Granted, they usually suck at whateverthey try different, but that's not the point. Jim Carrey is a perfectexample.By the way, was Milla's character ever mentioned by name in the movie? Ordowe all know she was named Alice from this site and the credits. My friendsand I could all swear we never heard her name or the black guy who lookslike Laurence Fishburne's name. What a sucky script, we can't even getnamesfor the people....Anyways, I think this film sucked, if you think it was cool, then go rent areal zombie movie, or at least find something that's not a Matrix wannabe (Jump kicking Dog scene, bullet time licker scene)...
Resident Evil is one of my all time favorite movies, and is definitelyworth your time. Don't listen to the haters of this movie, they're justmad because this isn't a carbon copy of their beloved video game. PaulAnderson makes a wise choice here in branching off from the games, because while the Resident Evil series works as a video game, it wouldsuck as a movie. The acting is pretty good as well. Milla Jovovich,Eric Mabius, and Michelle Rodriguez do an excellent job, and thezombies are extremely well choreographed. You will enjoy this movie ifyou don't expect it to be an Oscar winning masterpiece. Its a fun rompthat should be remembered for its amazing action sequences, not itsless than profound plot.9/10
This movie is intense due to the unusual action sequences in the film. Thefight scenes in the movie are alright and the effects in this film areamazing which I totally liked the film. You gotta watch this movie becausethis movie is cool!
Anderson has done an excellent job of keeping the audience on the edge of their seats. It's an amazing film that will keep you jumping all the way through.
Ok, Video games to films? Not very good admitted, Super Mario Bros attests to that.I am trying not to be biased as i am a massive fan of the videogames.Unfortunately, this film was a very very good chance to make a top notchhorror flick. It's a double edged sword however, if they rewrite(As they pretty muchdid)the storyline, it leaves it dissimilar to the VG's that me and quite a fewothers love!and if they dont rewrite it, it would obviously turn out to bepredictable.Besides the disappointment of RE for that matter, it is a great watch, withsome special effects to make the game "come to life" (thelicker)and the film is ultimately cast above such terrible efforts as mario brosand StreetFighter.Milla Jovovich is worthy of a lead role, and looks damn fine aswell!A hashed "alien-style" plot of the underground laboratory security system"turning against them" was kinda shocking but given the aforementioned VGtofilm efforts, it holds it head up high, though without unfortunately beingable to scare the life outta me!any comments or questions on my comment will be answered if you want toemail me.Please put RE in the subject matter if you do so !
