Hilarious scenes but disappointing plot

As much as I love the show Reno 911 I was a disappointed by the movie. In my opinion it strayed too far from the formula that makes the show so great (many short scenes with the characters finding them selves dealing with different situations). Although there were some really hilarious scenes, the time it took to build up to these punch lines seemed to drag. The scenes that were focused on telling the plot of the movie were the most unentertaining parts. The best parts of the movie were when the characters were split up in to pairs just doing their thing as they do in the show. This is when the chemistry between the characters really hit their comedic potential. Unfortunately the story did not utilize this but instead relied too much on very graphic sexual humor. To sum it up, this movie is really funny; however it did not live up to its potential.

Pray That Your Sheriff's Department Ain't Like These Men And Women

The Reno Sheriff's Department has graduated to the big screen, and forthose who love the Comedy Central TV series, you're in for more sexualinnuendo, more ineptness, and plenty of pithy bathroom comedy momentsyou've come to expect from this unique band of brothers (and sistas!)This time, though, Reno's finest have been invited (mistakenly) to theU.S. Sheriff's convention in Miami. All of our favorites plan toattend, too. The sashaying Lieutenant Dangle (Thomas Lennon,CONVERSATIONS WITH OTHER WOMEN) with his exceptionally tight shorts andflagging leadership. Deputy Trudy Wiegel (Kerri Kenney) and herchildish IQ and confused feelings for Dangle. Deputy James Garcia(Carlos Alazraqui) and his overly protective racial-ness. DeputyClementine Johnson (Wendi McLendon-Covey) and her exposed bosom thatattracts men like moths to a flame. Deputy S. Jones (CedricYarborough), probably the most ept of the inept but continuing to fallin with this depraved crowd and, not surprising, for Clementine. DeputeRaineesha Williams (Niecy Nash), a large booty woman who's attractionto Jones is never realized because he's after Clementine. Deputy TravisJunior (Ben Garant) who's only a small step up on the IQ scale fromTrudy Wiegel and constantly fails to accomplish anything. And finallydeputy Kimball (Mary Birdsong) who's denial of her sexual orientationbaffles the rest of her department; she's tough and walks like a man. This dangerous crew heads to Miami only to learn that they were NOTinvited. Ticked beyond belief, they are forced to find lodging at abottom rung motel. Drinking heavily and trying to fondle each other(but, failing that, themselves) the crew soon learns that a terroristattack has taken place at the convention center, leaving them (Reno's"finest") as the only law enforcement folks in the greater Miami area.Thrashing everything Miami turns out to be the best our wayward copscan do. Destroying police cars. Disabling dispatch centers. Watchingcitizens get eaten by gators. There's nothing their not ready to lethappen! There's a weaker subplot that unfolds throughout the story(related to the acting Mayor and a local drug czar) but it is fairlyscatterbrained. For those hoping for any type of cohesive story, you're not going tofind it. It is more like a long episode of Reno 911 than a film. Shortgag jokes rule, including surprise visits from characters on the TVshow that popped in from out of nowhere. It's still a damn funny film, just not as good as it could have been.

Peter Canavese 2012-05-17 19:44:48

While it's intermittently amusing, none of this was appointment television to begin with, so it's hard to imagine big crowds shelling out for it at the multiplex.

Sean Axmaker 2012-05-17 09:30:29

... it probably cost less than the catering budget of average Adam Sandler comedy and, in its own hit-and-miss scattershot fashion, it's about as funny. At least when it hits.

James Berardinelli 2012-05-16 06:08:36

As a TV show, Reno 911! is diverting and amusing; as a motion picture, it's overlong and wears out its welcome. The film offers some solid laughs, but not enough to justify sitting through 80 minutes of the faux cops' antics.

Rich Cline 2012-05-15 23:24:13

It's a completely unnecessary, ramshackle mess of a film. But it does keep you laughing.

Fun, mindless and entertaining! A perfect Sunday relaxer!

To the poster named Mike, who obviously needs to relax a bit and takethings for what they are: This is a fun, mindless and entertainingmovie! I found it perfect for a Sunday relaxer, where having akneeslapping laugh in the name of stupidity makes you realize whyBuster Keaton, Jim Carrey and Saturday Night Live will always echofurther into the future than a pessimistic, deeply self-centered andmost like sad-ending movie like the one you sound like you prefer wouldend.Try smiling. This movie is for people with a heartbeat and the abilityto push around a bit of self irony in this cold, egocentric world.Lighten Up! :) You will live longer/stronger

Like some deformed offspring that's been walled up in an attic for 20 years, this resurrects the spirit of Police Academy.

Michael Esposito 2012-05-05 15:21:05

Comedy Central's Reno 911! -- a spoof of the police ride-along show Cops -- takes a shot at stretching the concept into a feature-length film. Unusual for this misfit crew, the shot pretty much hits its intended target.

Not Perfect, But Funny

I know that many people are complaining about the short length of themovie, a sparse 84 min, but what's there is funny. I know that when Ileft the theater, my face, as well as the faces of my 9 friends whocame with me were hurting from laughing so hard. If you a fan of theshow, you will love the inside jokes and cameo of one of the shows mostbeloved characters (I won't spoil that for you, just look at the castfor yourself). There are also plenty of notable celebrity cameos suchas Danny DeVito, and The Rock to name a few. I will admit that it isn'texactly up for any awards, nor will it go down in history as one of thefunniest movies of history, but it has its moments. If you liked theshow, you will like the movie.

Fails to raise even a titter.

"Heavy on the -ASS-ador..."

Basically, if you love the show, you'll love the movie. The whole castis at their finest here, and it ranks up there with even my favoriteepisodes of the show. This is improv perfected, and I was literallylaughing from beginning to end. I thought they did a pretty good job ofgiving each of the deputies adequate screen time in what was allotted. It is basically just like an extended episode of the show with a fewbig budget extras thrown in, but as far as I'm concerned it's one ofComedy Central's all-time greatest shows along with MST3K, Kids In TheHall, South Park, Upright Citizens Brigade, Strangers With Candy, andThe Sarah Silverman Program, so you really can't ask for more.Best movie of '07, no competition. I just got the unrated DVD andthere's a lot of great stuff on there as far as extras go. Can't wait'till Season 4 hits the shelves.

This silly comedy based on a TV Show has a game cast but there's only a few laughs here.

Lieutenant Jim Dangle (Thomas Lennon) is been invited to a nationalpolice convention in Miami Beach, Florida. Dangle brings his sevendeputies with him. Deputy Travis Junior (Robert Ben Garant), DeputyTrudy Wiegel (Kerri Kenney-Silver), Deputy Raineesha Williams (NiecyNash), Deputy S. Jones (Cedric Yarbrough), Deputy Clementine Johnson(Wendi McLendon-Covey), Deputy James Garcia (Carlos Alazraqui) andDeputy Cherisha Kimball (Mary Birdsong) are thrilled with the news. Butonce they arrived in Miami, Florida. Their invitation is been misplacedand these inept cops are forced to stay to in a sleazy hotel for acouple of days. Now the city is in mortal danger, when all the cops inthe police convention are affected by a virus. Which they have a coupleof days to find the cure before they all die. Lieutenant Dangle and hisdeputies are the only law left in the city. They have no choice to dotheir job for this city. While the team are trying to find, who'sresponsible for the sick crime.Directed by Robert Ben Garant (Balls of Fury) made an lively comedythat is based on a Cult TV Series from Comedy Central. The cast, whoplay these inept characters are fun to watch but the script, written bydirector:Garant, Lennon and Kenney-Silver is thinly plotted and there'sno story here but a series of vignettes. These extremely dumber thandumb police officers are worse than the "Police Academy" cast ofcharacters. Which some scenes are amusing and it has some gross-outgags as well. The eight characters from the movie did so much better inthe TV Show.DVD has an sharp anamorphic Widescreen (1.85:1) transfer and an goodDolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. DVD has three commentaries tracks! One by actors/filmmaker:Garant, Lennon and Kenney-Silver. The two othercommentaries track are done by the eight cast members, being incharacter from the picture. DVD also has Deleted/Extended Scenes withoptional commentary by actors/filmmaker, Public Announce Services bythe cast members, a short featurette of the premiere of the movie andtrailers. This picture will certainly get an cult following. Fans ofthe TV Series will love it and others will probably find this moviejoyless. It is certainly a true mixed bag of a movie. Paul Rudd hassome funny bits in his bit part as "Ethan the Drug-lord". Which Rudddoes an funny parody of Oscar-Winner:Al Pacino's performance in"Scarface". Amusing cameos by Danny DeVito (Who's also one of theproducers of this film), David Koechner, Nick Swardson, Mindy Sterling,Paul Reubens and a uncredited one by The Rock. (***/*****).

The comedy gang from the popular television series takes their highly polished improvised comedic stylings to the big screen for bawdier and more explosive laughs.

What happened to my Reno?

I am a huge massive fan of the television series on Comedy Central. Ifound out about this movie in December and gosh, darn was I excited.Waiting in anticipation for two and a half months. Went to the pawnshop to sell some electronics (my GBA, PS1) before-hand to see thismovie with my buddies opening night. Little did I know this movie wouldbe a flop. There are few funny scenes in it, not much of a plot andjust generally boring in few areas. The trailer was funnier then themovie its self. Not much people was in the cinema. I'd say stick to theTV show or wait until this is on DVD to rent, because I don't thinkit's worth 7.50 to see in theater.

Wesley Morris 2012-04-21 15:09:47

This low-rent, nonsense cop business filled me with a nostalgic twinge. I didn't know I wanted the Police Academy series resurrected with a lot more hilarity, but I'm glad somebody did it.

martinlastbandit 2012-04-20 18:16:09

Amusing but not funny comedy

I went to see this movie because of my occasional indulgence in theComedy Channel's TV series this is based on.I thought that it started out well with the kind of situations thatmake me laugh at the TV episodes, and I chuckled or even outrightlaughed along with the other 5 people in the audience. But about two thirds through it started to fall apart for me. Or, well, whenever the mayor was revealed to be the "mastermind" and the drugcartel baddie was just a small time dealer from Colorado, pretending. It just got stupid right there. Wasn't it for the bloopers or unusedscenes shown during the end credits, I've gotten close to think of thisas not that far apart from the popular opinion about Epic Movie.

Ted Fry 2012-04-20 14:51:26

It's a pure delight that the show's genius performance troupe has assembled one of the highest-concept, lowest-brow, most uproarious movie debuts since the surprise sensation of last year's cable crossover Borat.

Frank Ochieng 2012-04-19 22:11:06

Sadly, there's not much of an arresting development from the lovable nitwits from Nevada.

Brian Lowry 2012-04-19 09:33:08

Running a mere 80 minutes and somehow still feeling heavily padded, this Cops spoof yields a few amusing (if widely spaced) moments but otherwise simply revels in the gratuitous nudity, language and below-the-belt gags that an "R" rating provides.
