A Very Funny Movie!

The movie is first rate with a great acting ensemble like RonLivingston better known for his leading role in Office Space, EmmyWinner Christine Baranski playing his adoptive mother, Edward Herrmannas his adoptive father. His adoptive parents are conservative WASPY andprominent country club member folks living in suburban Chicago. NeveCampbells plays his loving and supportive fiancé. Beverly D'Angelo isalmost unrecognizable as his tacky future mother-in-law. Of course, themovie gets wild when he is introduced to the Menures played by Oscarwinner Kathy Bates and Danny DeVito as the traveling carnival trailerpark folks who are the complete opposite of his adoptive parents. Itbrings the argument of nature v. nurture. Bates and DeVito really liventhings up after only a weekend which lasts longer when their trailer isdestroyed by a tornado in Illinois. There is a moment where he imagineshis birth parents to be intelligent, elitist, and left wingers only toget the Menures. The movie was just shown on Comedy Central and I'msure we'll be seeing it again and again if Comedy Central knows whatit's good for!

Hilarious!

This review is from: Relative Strangers (DVD) My whole family loves this movie! I randomly borrowed it from the library last year and was very surprised at how funny it is. We have watched it several times since then and decided we wanted to own it. Danny Devito and Kathy Bates are hysterical together. I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone.

Have You Heard of 'Flirting with Disaster'

Upon watching this film, you will begin to realize why Ron Livingston'scareer has gone south to hibernate, and may never return from thisawkward film. Also starring Kathy Bates and Danny DeVito in co-starringroles. However, they really do not make the film any more watch-able.The films premise is about a 35 year old man finding out he is adopted,pretty bland for a comedy film, and might I add, Ben Stiller hadalready done this concept in almost the same exact way several yearsbefore in the more successful 'Flirting with Disaster'. I believe thatif not the characters portrayed by Bates and DeVito had been "so downto Earth" country bumpkins and looking nothing like Livingston'scharacter, it may have faired better! Even so, this film has a cultfollowing because of Ron Livingston. 3/10!

Kathy Bates Rules!!!

Kathy Bates was awesome in, "Relative Strangers!" I always look so forward to seeing her in movies. I know I can always expect to be thoroughly entertained, and I was!

Not a bad movie

Why are the others who have reviewed this movie critically blaming theactors? It's a top notch cast. Honestly, whoever produced and editedthis movie is to blame if it's not more popular. Obviously the actorsmust have seen something good in the script for all of them to accepttheir parts they played. To me, this movie was not a disappointment asothers have commented. It's silly, yes. Goofy, yeah. To me, if it wasproduced a bit better, and the editing done a bit better I would havedefinitely given it at least a 7 out of 10. I watched this movie mostlybecause I just adore Ron Livingston. Even playing a straight-mancharacter he's very funny. I hope this gets released in the U.S. atleast on DVD because with it's cast it is well worth the watch.

Funny and Sweet

I gave this film a 10 to offset all these people who are saying it'sterrible. I honestly enjoyed it and laughed a lot. I don't know whatpeople are expecting but my Boyfriend and I both enjoyed this film alot. I've always been a fan of Ron Livingston, ever since Office Spaceand I thought he was amazing in this film. I think it's his funniestfilm since that one. Kathy Bates is also great(as always)and her andDanny Devito are a riot playing off each other. The ending issurprisingly touching and it left us both with big smiles on our faces.The supporting cast is top notch..I particularly enjoyed BeverlyD'Angelo as Neve Campbell's Mother. I've never heard of this film andcan't imagine why it didn't play theaters given all the truly crappycomedies they put out these days. This film is kind of silly but in agood way, IMO. If I want to get depressed I'll watch Schindler's List.

well this one gets a 10

A 10 for a comedy. Yes a wonderfully delightful film. Danny DiVito andKathy Bates were fantastic. It was a movie that took a wonderful lookat the snobs in this world and how in reality most of us have people inour families that are more like the Manure's. I sure do, and yessometimes I am a little embarrassed. But when i comes down to it. Theyare the genuine most loving people and the ones that truly stand byyou. I can not believe how wonderful Kathy Bates was and what anactress she is that she can do so many different parts. What a hoot sheis. I had a bunch of people over and we watched this video and we wentout of our minds laughing and I have not had a laugh like this in along time and did it ever feel good. I do not know why this was not outin the theaters more. They should run it again through the theaters. Ihave got to say it was wonderful and a truly must see film. NeveCambell and Ron Livingston were sweet but it was really the rest of thecast that stole the show and I mean they stole it. I do not know whothese ones that gave it a bad review are but, then again I saw lots ofgreat reviews for "For Your Consideration" and that one hardly had achuckle. And Beverly D'Angelo I did not even know who she was, and shewas great. So was Christine Baranski, and this time she was so goodwith just letting you know with her facial expressions.

A disregarded, really fun film

I see this all the time sadly. Movies that get little to no recognitionby hardly anyone that, even though they are not masterpieces, could bea lot of fun to many people. Here again is another movie I decided towatch primarily based on the cast. I mean, with Neve Campbell, KathyBates and Danny Devito, I hoped I was going to get some satisfaction atleast, and I was certainly right. I thankfully came across this moviebecause it was at a video store near me that I went to all the timethat carried a lot of obscure movies, among popular ones of course. Imost definitely did not find it because it had any publicity oranything, which is why it is so unknown. Relative Strangers is allaround very fun and entertaining, and well worth the time. While it is not a masterpiece, like I said, I enjoyed it a lot andthought it was a well made film, regardless of minor mediocrities dueto budget and indistinguishable crew members (I mean, the director wasonly known for the Meet the Parents series basically, if anyone knewhim for that), and also I do realize it is not the greatest film ever.I got the movie for the cast as I have mentioned, that's it, and thatis another reason why I enjoyed it as much as I did. Though the film isnot necessarily fantastic on it's own, the cast is wonderful and workswith the material amazingly. Neve Campbell and Kathy Bates are adelight for me at least in any film anyway. The story is not amazing and the other main actor, whose name escapesme if I ever knew it in the first place, is not as enjoyable as theother three really well known stars, but it's genuine enjoyability, ifyou loosen up, is what makes this film come through in the end. Soshould you give Relative Strangers a chance if you happen to comeacross this comment? If you know you will be able to like it for whatit is, a fun and endearing little speculation, then most definitely,because it is just a very fun movie with some heartwarming qualities. Iwas very pleased with the outcome, and am glad I had the chance to viewit. Do not even pay attention to it's ridiculous rating.

Unexpected Hilarity Unexcelled

This review is from: Relative Strangers (DVD) The comedy shown greatly exceeded prior anticipation or speculation. Oscar-worthy and should become a future recurring classic. The DeVito-Bates duo is irreplaceable and, as I am a Neve-Campbell fan, any commentof mine involving her could only be considered biassed. All the other parts were OK albeit replaceable.

It was an ok movie!!

The story was ok, but the movie itself was a bit disapointing. I saw Danny Divito's name and I got very excited because I thought that it would be a good and funny movie. But I soon realized that it wansn't what I expected at all. The storyline is similar to "meet the parents" and "meet the fockers" and I loved those movies. they were funny. This movie is no were near as good as those movies.

Mother Juggs and Speed!

This was by no means a great movie, but it was enjoyable.The production values were low and the performances at times sufferedfrom overacting -- especially by Danny DeVito. But, the film had alittle bit of heart, and I couldn't help but smile at times.Neve Campbell is so beautiful here; I can't understand why she's notmore famous. She just radiates and lights up the screen every time sheis on here.Kathy Bates was great, as always, but I found Ron Livingston'sperformance to be a little stale.If you're looking for a lighthearted movie to help you waste away aSunday afternoon, this is it. Just don't expect too much and you won'tbe that disappointed.

This movie is hysterical!!

Danny Devito & Kathy Bates are sooo funny in this movie--I wish peoplewould stop trying to over analyze everything and just enjoy the moviefor what it is -- entertainment!! Who cares if some parts werepredictable-- that made it all the more funny as you waited to see howthey were going to play out the scene! This cast was amazing and theyall played their parts to a T! Although, Danny & Kathy stole themovie!! Their depictions of country bumpkins was just brilliant! Anyonewho saw this movie and did not laugh out loud needs to see it again !!You missed the entire point -- this is fun entertainment!!! Its sorefreshing to see a movie that you can just enjoy for what it is andnot walk out trying to figure out the deeper meaning of what the moviewas really about. SEE THIS MOVIE IF YOU WANT TO LAUGH!!!

Quality

Hilarious! Don't pass this one up!

I happened to notice a copy of Relative Strangers with the new releases at the video rental store, and as soon as I saw Danny Devito with Kathy Bates on the cover, I had to rent it! My boyfriend wasn't as thrilled as I about renting a movie he'd never heard of, but once we popped in the dvd we were laughing nonstop! Devito and Bates make one hilarious couple- I can't imagine two better actors for those parts. Ron Livingston as the "son" wasn't so convincing, but honestly, who cares when Devito and Bates steal the show anyway?! I will defintely be watching this one again. Worth it just for the Devito/Bates comedy.

Hi,I'm from Pekin.I felt belittled from this movie. We're a quite townhardly any crime and just very peaceful place to live.Obviously you'venever been here or you would have picked somewhere else to make thecharacter from. Well anyway its just offensive and demeaning. Ifsomeone was to see the movie they could think we are all buffoons weare not.I like Danny in some things but not this. As for this movie Isay boo and he is much better of an artist than this. I would like foryou to look up pekin on the web and tell me what you think of my littletown. A good and entertaining movie!

It took a while of watching to finally catch on to the plot. Actually,I was a bit "bored" for a while, but as I continued to watch I began toreally enjoy it. In the end I it made me feel good. Once in a while amovie comes along that does that! I know people that are "to good foreveryone else" so it was funny to see this in a movie.I would say this movie is about a 6 rating, but I gave it a ten on thevote to up the percentage from those gave it a zero. It is worthchecking out.The cast is really good. It is funny seeing Devito and Deangelo intheir roles, as this movie was a bit of a change from the usual. Ithink I have the hots for Neve Campbell after watching this movie andhave always been a fan of Mr. Office Space, Livingston.

Imagine the cruelty of adoptive parents to tell an unsuspecting sonthat he is adopted? To make matters worse, the Claytons, a rich couple,have waited a long time to spring the news to Richard, who is about toget married! This is the premise for this comedy created by GregGlienna, who also contributed to its screen play. The film, which wentdirectly to video, never had a chance to make it commercially, in spiteof the prominent figures in the cast. In fact, the film seems to thisviewer as a variation of the more successful "Meet the Parents", whichemployed Mr. Glienna as a writer. Not that this film is horrible, byany means, but it appears the powers that be must have had doubts aboutits impact and sent it to the DVD limbo.Ron Livingston, who is seen as Richard, the man who is told he has beenliving a lie, is quite good and shows a flair for comedy. Neve Campbellis also effective in playing the object of Richard's love. Thecombination of the vulgar Meneres as played broadly by Danny Devito andKathy Bates have some good moments. Christine Baranski and EdwardHerrmann play the Claytons, the uptight adoptive parents. The one thatis hardly recognizable is Beverly D'Angelo, who must have gone througha procedure to change the way we remembered her.
