Pulse is the remake of a 2001 J-horror film that was derivative and pokey, even before Hollywood got its hands on it.

A surprise!

This movie was quite a surprise. I thought it was going to be horribleand it actually was pretty good. I saw the Japanese version of thisfilm as well and I thought Pulse (2006) was a pretty good remake. Thespecial effects were cool and I liked the ending. The original endingwas horrible so I'm glad it was changed. The DVD itself is cool. Itcontains deleted scenes and the crappy alternate ending. The crappyending makes you appreciate the good ending even more. I'm surprisedthis movie bombed in the theater, I wish I would have seen it because Iliked it and I recommend Pulse to anyone that likes supernaturalthrillers. I liked Pulse more than some other supernatural thrillersthat have been released in the last couple of years.

Another Crap-Orama Re-make Of A Good Movie

If you've seen the original Pulse movie stick with that and try to forget that Hollywood made another horrible try at a re-make. After the monetary success of the Ring re-makes dubious as they were Hollywood just had to let their greed show and come out with a load of atrocious re-makes like The Grudge, Shutter, and One missed call, and this movie joins the list of idiotic re-makes. The story itself promised to be entertaining about seemingly spirits coming though a unknown frequency that was discovered and than spreading through the living world through that frequency until the whole world was infected. I know that it sounded a little stupid but I thought with this re-make they would keep mostly close with the original and they do somewhat but it also differs greatly an other areas. The most annoying thing about the movie was the actors except for about maybe four actors the rest were just so pathetic in their acting skills, it seemed that they were just reading the script lines with little or no emotional feelings. Also what you might find laughable is the story-plot that red tape will keep the spiritual energies out of the area if you seal a room up completely with the red color tape, but if you seal yourself in a apartment or room what are you going to do about food unless you stockpiled some up I mean your going to starve to death so whats the point? All I can say in the end is for the price and if your curious rent the movie or go ahead and buy it but don't expect a great deal from this sorrowful re-make... Here's a little update I know the review shows how much I dislike this horrendous re-make so why does it show five stars, sadly when I was putting the number rating of stars my computer slipped up a little and it put in the five stars rating instead of the one star I meant to do. I'm just feeling a little lazy and have just decided to leave it like this and give the reason why people see the stupid five star rating instead...

This domestic redo of Kurosawa's ghost story is a reasonably sinister scary movie that faithfully taps into its predecessor's existential dread and distrust of technology.

No pulse

I've been wanting to go to the cinema and enjoy a scary film for yearsnow.. I yearn for the evening I actually get scared in the cinema.Alas, the day hasn't come for many years...The only thing closest todoing so was the Saw series...Soon to be trilogy. But even then, it wasmore revolting than scary...The question you have to ask yourself is this: Someone had to think ofthe visuals and stories in the first place - Its a worrying thought toknow that these scenes had to run through the director andscreenwriters minds initially...Who would think of such madness! -Someones gotta do it I guess!I think cinema has been bogged down with so many college type, scream,IKWYDLS look- alike movies, Japenese rip-offs and teen horrors whichquite frankly do nothing, except regurgitate the same old crap.In this film in particular, the primary action of the main characterwas to walk up to potentially scary situations, scream, then run off.It gets rather annoying after a while and insulting to my intelligence- Yes, I do have one surprisingly! There are some good parts to this film:1) It ends in a negative light, which is a rather refreshing thing. 2)The music was composed/created by Elia Cmiral, who did a greatsoundtrack to Ronin (Im not saying the Pulse soundtrack was great) 3)Ron Rifkin was in it, which is good since he hasn't done too much and Ithink is underrated. 4) Wes Craven did help to write the script. (Ithink he let himself go in this one though). On to the script: The first half of the script was actually ratherintelligent and would probably go down well with teens. It raises anumber of different questions about electronic communication. However, when the second half begins, all screen writing talent, in my opinion(I don't write so I cant complain too much!!!), goes out the window. All in all, if you are after a scary film that will shock you, perhapswait until Saw 3 this Halloween...My great grandma has more of a pulsethan this movie and shes 6ft under. On one more point. The cinema wasn't full in the slightest anyway, butI've never seen people leave the cinema so quick when it was over...andoverhearing their comments after with my friend...It was only £5 and itkept us ''entertained'' for the evening. I use the word ''entertained''loosely there.

A Pretty Good Movie

I thought this movie was one of the better horror movies I have seenlately. Pulse does a better job of scaring the audience, than a lot ofmovies have. When I went and saw this movie there were people screamingthroughout the theater. Yes, it is not one of the best horror movies ofall time, but for right now this tops a lot of them. The story was easyto follow, the perfect "freak out" moments were there, and the cast waspretty good. I personally enjoyed watching Ian Somerhalder. There arethe cheesy horror movie moments, but what movie doesn't have that? Theghosts are pretty scary. They have a human element, that is overtlyfreaky. It was a good late night scare. I was on the edge of my seatfor most of the movie. I say go see it and see if you feel like gettingonline afterwards, my friends and I didn't.

Serapheal 2012-05-11 10:26:39

Not even scary.

Probably one of the stupidest Movies of all time. Nothing wasplausible, such a far leap in the suspension of disbelief. I reallytried to enjoy it, but there was no way, the movie has to be at leastsomewhat believable. The dialogue was so generic. And, some scenes wereso dumbed down, it was insulting. Solid story, but a stupid story. Someof the CG work was pretty cool. But you can have the greatest graphicsin the world, but if the Story has no significance then what's the use. Also, why do the black people always die horrible deaths in thesemovies ? So cliché. I say the only redeeming element of this film wasthe...uhmm.. the blonde chick. Don't waste your time or money on a movie like this unless you'reanother director or screenwriter and you wanna learn what NOT to do.

Thumbs Down

I, myself, am a fan of Kristen Bell and her work. This was one of thefirst reasons i thought this movie was going to be pretty good. But asi watched it, i was very disappointed. First off, you RARELY see theguys in this film. It's made up of mainly 3 characters the whole time-Mattie (Bell), Izzy (Milian), and Dexter (Somerhalder). The rest of the"main" characters are killed with in the first 30 minutes of the movie. The movie is basically about a group of friends that receive a bunch ofcreepy IMs from their deceased friend, Josh (Tucker). All of thefriends survive except for Mattie. But she isn't alone. She befriendedDexter when he started to explain all of the creepy things on Josh'scomputer (how that bonded them together as friends, i have no idea). The ending is basically them driving and Mattie explaining why the willto live is so great. It was a very, very, disappointing movie. Anotherupsetting thing is that you never got to understand the backgrounds ofthe characters. Their personalities are never shown, with the exceptionof the first 5 minutes of the movie. I highly DO NOT recommend it.

The-Saw 2012-05-01 21:20:15

I loved it!

I am very surprised to say, that I loved it!!!! It is scary and haseverything a horror movie needs! It has scenes that jump out at you(lots of those) and some creepy scenes. I want to see kairo now. Iloved the ending. My favorite scene was when Tim looked through thepeephole and the killing thing jumped out. I don't know why people ratethis so low. this is one of the scariest movies I have ever seen. Irate it a perfect 10/10. for being a scary movie, having a surpriseending, and for scenes that jump out at you. I won't be surprised isthis is better than kairo. I wish I would have seen it in theaters. Iwould like to know why everyone rates this movie so low.

another Hollywood movie with hints of creativity

Another typical Hollywood movie with sub par acting. This movie was abit far fetched even for fiction and this is easily concluded withanalyzation of its plot, which subsequently contained a few holes.Overall the movie itself is watchable with some creative moments, aboveaverage visuals and decent special effects. With it PG13 rating its oneof those horror movies that uses volume for effect rather than violenceand gore, with the exception of 1 or 2 scenes. Lots of suddenspontaneous moments are this movies main efforts. I thought the endingwas stupid and added to the "hollywood-esque" feeling of the movie. Iwouldn't really recommend this movie to anyone wanting a great horrorflick but rather as a bored Sunday type of movie. Almost a winner butfalls way short of anything ingenious.

Apocalypse Wow

Brilliant. A post-9/11 horror masterpiece!I have to defend this excellent little epic of nightmare cinema fromall you logic hounds out there who can't stand movies that don'texplain everything to you. This is dream-logic film-making at itscreepy, subconscious best. Irrational, inexplicable, inevitable, andinescapable: It's the end of the world as we know it. Like the amazingDawn of the Dead remake, it taps into our post-9/11 anxieties and turnseveryday reality on its head. Like the French thriller Cache, it bringsreal terror and paranoia into our homes. And like Todd Hayne's Safe, itoffers no easy way out.Surprisingly, this American version retains the original Japanesefilm's bleak atmosphere and irrational plotting, leading the viewerslowly and inexorably to the bitter end. Spoiler: The protagonists tryto save the world and actually fail: how often does that happen inHollywood movies these days? Pulse reminds me of apocalyptic horror classics like Alfred Hitchcock'sThe Birds, David Cronenberg's Videodrome and Crash, Roman Polansky'sRepulsion, and Stanley Kubrick's The Shining -- visionary films thatwere also dismissed when they were first released.Visually, this new Pulse is stunning, probably because director JimSonzero comes from the disciplined world of commercial advertising.Check out his high-tech ghosts in slow-motion on your DVD. Freaky. Andnotice how the streets and classrooms keep getting emptier, darker andgrimier as the film progresses; the world is quietly coming to an endbut no one is doing anything about it! Chilling. All in all, the overall effect is downright disturbing.Too bad Pulse isn't getting the recognition it deserves. I, for one, can't wait to see what the director does next.

2012-04-25 04:39:45

Booo...I mean zzzzzzzz

I think there was some interesting commentary trying to be made here. The movie looks good and creepy. Decent cast. However, there is the issue of the plot that makes no sense that kind of messes things up here. There is nothing scary or "horror" about this movie, so don't get too excited if you are a big horror fan. There is certainly no gore. Just a lot of creepy shadow-ghost-type things that can attack you or not attack you with no rhyme of reason.

kmarrier 2012-04-24 17:38:53

Awful.

Well, I just saw this pile of sh*t. It was one overpriced, bad acting, crammed, train wreck of a remake. Why do these Japanese films keepgetting' remade for America? I saw the Japanese version...it'sbetter...but..not by much....the only "scary" part about this movie iswhen you realize you just paid for it. Any "horror" part is shown inthe trailers and previews, and really, if you watched those...you sawthis movie already. The end..well..see for yourselves...but, leavesmuch to be desired, and some more of an explanation would have beennice, but, if you can see it cheap...well...still don't, f*ck thismovie, and f*ck its crappy acting and "almost attempt" at scares, seesomething else for 8 bucks.

2012-04-21 14:27:42

I don't know...I liked it...

After all the bad stuff I heard about this movie I rented it with pretty low expectations; I just wanted to see the star of my favorite show (Kristen Bell of "Veronica Mars") in a horror film. To my surprise I really got into it. It's not particularly scary, but it's got an amazing look and style to it; definitely made me think of the Silent Hill video games. Bell and the rest of the cast provide better acting than most movies of this nature. Overall I really got caught up in the film. "Pulse" is nowhere near as good as "The Ring," but it's definitely better than "The Ring Two" and "The Grudge" movies. Worth a rental at least.

Larry Ratliff 2012-04-21 01:45:17

Pulse isn't awful. It's just an uninspired fright-fest with ghouls we've seen before and not enough creative style to make us forget that fact.

Best Worst Movie of my Life

I'm not going to say much, just that the pulse...actually had peoplelaughing. I went to a sneak screening in Toronto just a few hours ago,and that movie, I thought I'd be petrified, Instead I sat therewatching with my eyes wide open eating my popcorn.Heres just a few things. The Pulse...Brought to you by Canada Post. I SWORE at the end you'd seea post logo somewhere. Kristen: Well we've learned a lot today Ian: We sure have. Kristen: ButIf there's one thing I've learned, its to always use your local postoffice. Ian: the post office, for ALL your communication needs. *cheesesmiles*Or what about this:Matty: What do they want. Izzy: What they don't have. They want life.OK, so....after the ghosts kill everyone in the world..they justdo...what exactly. Live? cause...I dunno doesn't look like there's anyreal PURPOSE to taking everyones life...they just do.Uberghost: I've done it! I've taken EVERYONES life force...*sigh*...now what?I just REALLY don't understand the point. I mean, you take someoneslife so you can...live again... ? and then after that what? they killYOU?? So THEY can live again... and then it's just some giant circle ofsucking???And What happens to Tim?Tim: I just wanted to see you again.Matty: thats...thats great...um...point to this? And at the end? I swear it was a spoof of million dollar manMatty: *driving into the sunrise* We will rebuild it..make it better, faster, stronger...They're just supposed to build colonies in rural areas with no wi-fi?Until what? How do you get food? How do you GO get food?? You're prettymuch trapped in clumps of farm land until you go try and get survivorsthen the UberGhost just goes:"Haha!! life force sucking....haha....why again?"Like people were laughing at so many things I just figured I didn't getthe joke. It's just too bad that this was Kristen Bells movie debut, she' bepraised and criticized for sure!awesome. It was so bad, it was awesome.

a different step

Eh I think this movie deserved an 8 actually, but with the insaneamount of people just voting 1, I need to balance that out.The reason why it's 8 is mainly because, although a bit unfair reason, the actors are all new ones. Another HUGE reason is because Wes cravendid the screen play, hence all the epileptic flashing of thecomputers/ghosts. Another downside is that the movie is a bit too shortand it doesn't cover many things mentioned in the plot (eg 'bagman').Same goes with the rushed ending. I would've preferred the Japaneseversion's ending. In my summary, I wrote a different step mainly because unlike TheDescent, this movie doesn't need to rely on cheap 'jump' scares thatmany movies do. However, if that's your thing, then go for it, butPulse is more on the line of disturbing and downright morbid. This filmcertainly also has a very depressing tone to it too, what with the darkimages and atmosphere of all the shots. The cuts made to the film byDimension Films really raped the movie. They took out many key scenes(tower-jumper, etc.) just to hit the pg-13 rating.Honestly, I think PG-13 is pretty unfair, as there's a HUGE theme onsuicide and many images are very disturbing, especially for some kids.Versus the Japanese version, I actually prefer this one over theJapanese one, although the Japanese covers more plot and the ending isbetter. With the remake, the story moves at a MUCH faster pace withoutboring, dragged on scenes. And I know many of you want the 'subtleness'or the 'deepness' of the slow shots in the Japanese version, but it wasreally testing my patience.I definitely prefer this over The Descent and over the Japanese version(you should watch both though, Japanese one first). And this moviedefinitely hit many interesting concepts and never kept you boredwithout the use of 'jump' scares, a major accomplishment for manyAmerican movies. The remake of the Grudge is also worth checking out too.

user-14064 2012-04-15 17:51:01

Good for background noise.

Kairo shouldn't have an American counter part. The original washorrible and the remake is just as horrible. There is a lot of stuff(not to mention the entire plot line) that is new, but that doesn'tmake up for lack of of originality. It's not scary, it's not evenamusing. It's good for background noise and that's about it. I do notrecommend watching this movie until you have seen the original, and cancompare the awfulness, but be warned- the original will bore you todeath. It has the same plot is Ju-on and everything other Japanesehorror movie ever made. The American counter parts to these moviesthough intended to be scarier, fall about 100 yards from being remotelyscary. This movie is no exception and in fact, this movie is the worst.

ktr8rmv814 2012-04-15 08:21:22

Damn Good

I went to see this movie yesterday with a couple of friends. Lets startoff by saying this was a movie that Dimension (studio that should notmake horror movies) had cut down over 30 minutes of footage to make itpg-13 which supposedly equals more money. Anyway the movie was actuallywell done. The atmosphere was really dark, the lighting really good,make-up, and visuals were awesome. If you like the Ring or the Grudge, you should definitely watch this. If you like gore, maybe this isn'tyour thing. I'm into the more atmospheric, visual, and sound of amovie, so this thing freaked me out. Don't pass it up, though. I can'twait for a directors cut when it comes out on DVD. To summarize it up,I enjoyed it, give it a chance. Oh and props to Kristen Bell andChristina Millian. They did a pretty damn good job in this movie.
