Forget about thecritics panning this film. Forget all of that. This movie isn't bad aspeople said it was. When horror fans think "slasher" and "PG-13," theyassume it won't mix well, because the base formula for a slasher isblood, guts, and gore. Unfortunately, since this movie is PG-13, it hasbarely any of that. Now here comes the catcher: This movie relies more on suspense, abrooding, ominous atmosphere, and sound effects to scare the audience, which, more or less works. The bad thing is that there are someclichés. The good thing is it's different from everyday slashers. LikeI said, barely any blood is spilled in here.If you don't like the sound of that, well, skip this movie. It isn'tfor you. Yes, the clichés are still there, like some big "WTF" momentspop out in the middle of some scenes because of some characters' stupidmoves. Other "WTF" moments, in my opinion, is the unusually high bodycount, which is ten or more. I found some kills very unnecessary but Iguess it was to please the gore hounds out there, which obviouslydidn't work. I was also disappointed in the end.Apart from those flaws, the film stands up pretty well. I appreciatethat the film was trying to do something new. I love the use of soundhere, and if you know me, I usually don't praise horror movies fortheir sound effects. The use of sound makes this movie more suspensefuland gives it a more dark tone. I also love the way the kills were shot.It was different and unique.I also liked the fact the filmmakers decided to show the killer's facewithin five minutes into the movie. Judging from the trailer, you wouldthink they'll show it in the end but you're wrong. The performanceswere good. I also felt some sympathy for the characters, which is alsoanother high point in the movie.Overall, the way this film was shot, the use of sound, and some othermagical elements in this film, like the young, unknown cast, gave thefilm some life. The film is not perfect in any way but I liked that itwas trying to be different, and although it may have failed with manyviewers, whom weren't likely the target demographic in the first place,I appreciated that.
I am sorry, but I wanted to enjoy this movie but by the end I was sad.The trailer made this movie look like a decent slasher flick but whenthe plot goes nowhere and the characters barely develop you get thispiece of garbage! DO NOT waste your time on this film! I could of madea movie with a better plot.I mean you keep getting this dream sequences which confused me becauseI did not realize if we are in the dream or in real life! This is howit all goes down, two people go up to a hotel room and are killed thenext couple goes to look for them (dead), the next couple and so on andso forth. And the killer is some teacher who loves Brittany Snow SO much that hekilled her parents and all her friends and a maid! Wow all that forher??? Well Brittany isn't that bad ;) The acting is not very good, butagain this movie was made with a bunch of nobody's, sorry but I did notrecognize anyone in this movie except my friend who said "isn't thatgirl from Hairspray?".Overall I disliked this movie a bunch (can you tell???). I hope thisreview keeps you from viewing and wasting your money on this trash!
The Yahoo! Movies description of this movie being about a dark childhood secret and a vengeful killer is in no way a description of this movie. It had nothing to do with either. For those of you who remember the original Prom Night from the '70s, if you make the decision to see this movie based on the descriptions you have read on the internet or your local paper, you are going to be sorely disappointed. Not a bad movie, just not what I was lead to believe that it was going to be.
Now I haven't seen the original version, but I can tell you that it'sprobably better than the remake. The movie's PG-13 rating takes almostall of the thrill and suspense out of the film. The beginning of the movie starts off sudden, but afterwards there's anice drought of action until the first prom killing. The PG13 ratingmakes the death scenes quite bland and boring. You won't see thevictims actually getting attacked, but you'll see silhouettes and bloodsmears. That's about it.The characters in the movie make it seem like you're watching a movieof The Hills. The girls are the classic "dumb blonde" stereotypes whilethe men are the typical "hard jock" stereotype. Any angst there isbetween the characters is very dry and holds no real meaning to theoverall movie. The plot is very predictable, I sat through the entire movie correctlyguessing what was going to happen next and when something good wasgoing to happen. All in all, this is a good movie if you're looking for some goodlaughs, but overall don't expect to be extremely happy with the finalproduct. Personally I'd wait for the movie to come out on DVD. Ifyou've seen any other slasher film, chances are you could guess everynext move in this movie.
OK Prom Night is not the greatest horror/thriller of the genre but itis certainly not the worst either! In fact what we have here is apredictable yet enjoyable teen slasher flick, yes it doesn't take aSherlock Holmes to figure out whats coming next but if you do give it achance you will find it does have suspense and under the unlikelycircumstances a certain degree of realism. The leading Cop isprofessional and he instructs his men in a sense which is be believableas a genuine detective, and his supporting comrades do a fine andprofessional job too. The victims also play their roles well, thecrying and screams are very realistic and yes they all make typicaldumb moves that is the exact intention with this kind of movie. Did youexpect them to all to just stay in one place and hold hands? what kindof a movie would that be! The real star of the show is the Villain itjust shows that we don't always have to have some creepy guy in ahockey or clown mask to pull off scary expressions human expressionscan also be terrifying too and he portrays this with perfection hisactions and cold temper extremely credible as a serial killer. The cinematography in this film is great excellent scenes good camerawork atmospheric sound maybe needs more gore but then the PG ratingwould need to be pushed up and this was aimed at a wider audience Allin all what you see is what you get with Prom Night and i knew exactlywhat i was expecting so i didn't let myself get disappointed, instead isaw good acting with likable characters in suspenseful scenes! Althoughthe end isn't great this was an enjoyable 90 minutes ignore all the badratings and give this a go 7/10
I thought it was really good. Of course it was pretty obvious who the guy was gonna kill each time but i thought it was good
Now, I know for a fact that I've seen the original "Prom Night"(released in 1980 and starring Jamie Lee Curtis) at one point in mylife, but it was so mundane and insignificant that I don't actuallyremember anything about it. In other words I haven't got the slightestidea why specifically this slasher deserved the remake treatment, butapparently it doesn't matter, as the new version is a remake "in nameonly". One could claim there definitely are some plot-similaritiesbetween the two movies, but then again, nearly ALL teen-slasher moviesfeature these prototypic characteristics. As dreaded but expected,"Prom Night 2008" is an incredibly redundant, politically correct andfrustratingly routine new horror movie that contributes a great deal ingiving the genre a bad reputation nowadays. The movie nonetheless opensmildly promising; with a modern reworked version of the song "Time ofthe Season" (the original sung by The Zombies would even have beenbetter of course, but still ) and some niftily shot images during theopening credits. Immediately after that, it's just a never-endingspitfire of dull clichés, out of date stereotypes, painfullyineffective attempts to build suspense, bloodless killings, unsurprising twists and acting performances that are beyond amateurish.Johnathon Schaech is a good and versatile actor, but I haven't seen himstar in a good film since "The Doom Generation", and somebody reallyought to advise him to put a stop to his frequent collaborations withwriter/director J.S. Cardone. Schaech's performance is the onlyremotely decent aspect about "Prom Night", as he depicts a formerteacher with a deadly and permanent obsession for one of his femalestudents. Three years before Mr. Fenton barbarically slaughteredDonna's family and swore to return before he was declared insane andgot institutionalized. Now he escaped and heads straight for Donna'shometown, just during a night that should have been one of the greatestnights of her life the Prom! The main problem with "Prom Night" (or atleast one of the many) probably lies with the characters. You don'tcare whether they live or die since they're such fake and cardboardindividuals. I mean, come on The jock, the sensitive guy, thecompetitive bitchy girl, the gym teacher with lesbian tendencies, theobsessive cop, the rookie cop, the good-hearted aunt and uncle and soon. Perhaps if the film were intended as a parody the cast ofstereotypes could have worked, but unfortunately everyone involved inthe production takes this stinker dead serious. The PG-13 says it allin this case: goody-goody childish garbage without violence, guts oreven a minimum of sleaze.
The acting was horrendous as well as the screenplay. It was poorly puttogether and made you almost want to laugh at the several terriblyacted out murder scenes. The ending was even worse. Everyone keptdying, but somehow the ending made it look like everything wasperfectly OK! They did not give enough history about the obsession theteacher had, etc. The movie needed more time to perhaps develop abetter storyline. The only reason I give this 3/10 is that I kind offeel bad for the young actors. They needed better coaching. They couldhave really made this an OK film, but the screenplay and acting failedmiserably.
Whoever did the poster art for this movie should get an award. It is far and away the best part of this movie. The lead actress and the detective were pretty good in their roles, but the movie has zero tension and the bad guy is particularly unscary.
A murderer has returned to take the life of one person, and he's notafraid to knock-off anyone who gets in his way...Sound familiar? Yeah it does! As well as that, the original Prom Nightstarred Jamie Lee Curtis who was in Halloween. At least the originalhad a better story. They shouldn't of made this. It's not just gettingin the way of the Scream Queen, but the movie is just downrighthorrible. I was so excited to go see this, but no. This movie sucked sohard. The acting is bad, the story is bad, the killing scenes areANYTHING BUT BRUTAL which the original had and it COMPLETELY ALIENATESthe original! Brittany Snow should of stuck to John Tucker. I pray theythis doesn't spawn ANY sequels.1/10
I had skipped my lessons with my friends and walked into the cinemawith an open mind for this movie, and despite all the * out of 10*comments I had read right here on this site just a while ago, I have tosay that it really surprised me as well as my friends. People aresaying things like its too predictable, or the directing and acting ishorrendous...endless list. However its not unwatchable. At least it hadmy eyes opened for the entire screening. This movie is never meant tobe an Oscar or box office robber, so just watch this movie like you arewatching any Saturday night slasher flick, you won't be disappointed,or at least not so disappointed.
3 years ago, Donna Keppel (Betthany Snow) was devestated to find her family murdered by a mad psycho named Richard Fenton (Johnation Schaech) as she now lives with her aunt (Jessalyn Gigslig) and uncle (Linden Ashby). As her friends like boyfriend Bobby (Scott Porter), Lisa (Dana Davis), Claire (Jessica Strot), Ronnie (Collins Pennie) and Michael (Kelly Blatz) are gonna spend a night at one of the town's grand hotels as the senoir prom is being held over there. However Detective Winn (Idris Elba) has some problems as the killer has escaped from the mental institute to become a party crasher killing off the students in their rooms and at the Prom.In-name-only remake of 1980's not-so-classic slasher flick "Prom Night" which originally starred Jamie Lee Curtis. The whole film is one big mess! i mean the film does have bad acting and direction. One of the biggest problems with this one is that it's a dull slasher flick with no imagination, no good kills or even a sense of fun as it's a total loser. This Blu-Ray offers terrific sound and picture quality but that still doesn't make up for the movie not even the unrated version here. The extras are plenty such as commentary, deleted scenes, alternate ending, gag reel, video yearbook, bonus view PIP, storyboard track, featurettes, trailer and TV Spot.
it was one of the worst scary movies in years1. right off the bat it shows you the killers face so gone is themystery 2. there is absolutely no suspense every thing is absolutelypredictable3. where did they get the actors? from some f* King high school play???there is a plus side to this thoughit is a great comedy because everything is so predictablehere is how me and my friends saw itabout 15 minutes into this. my friend Damion fell asleep me and myfriend Zack shouted out 100% everything that was going to happen next.about half way through when you get past the prom queen scene about 3/4of the audience walked out.we laughed all the way through and even at the end we were cheering forthe main chick to d ie.the only reason I gave this a two instead of a one is because it mademe laugh harder than any other comedy than it has all year.
I loved this movie, i went to see it three different times in thetheater last April. I know that ti was a remake, but it didn't reallyfollow the same plot line as the 1980 flick. Don't get me wrong, i loveboth of them, but the 1980s Prom Night was more of a slasher flick and2008's Prom Night is more of a suspense thriller, which totally rocked. If you are a fan of Brittany Snow and Jessica Stroup, like I am, thenyou will definitely die for this flick. Brittany Snow(John Tucker MustDie) finds herself target by an escaped mental patient JohnathanSchaech(The Forsaken and Hush), who comes after her three years laterafter targeting her and her family. When she goes to her senior promwith her close friends Jessica Stroup(90210 and Hills Have Eyes 2),Scott Porter, Dana Davis, Collins Pennie, Kelly Blatz, he hides insidethe hotel, waiting to strike. As her friends begin to disappear, shemust confront her past in hopes to survive the night. This movie reallyrocked, i like the ones with obsessive psychopaths and the things thatthey will do to express their love. So definitely check it out and itsalso a Screen Gems release.
Watching this remake of "Prom Night", I had to wonder why the producersof this movie spent the money to get the rights to the old "Prom Night"movie. Yes, both movies take place on prom night, and both involvekillers picking off teens, but when it comes to similarities THAT'S IT.Anyway, I thought this movie was even worse than the original. Thecharacters are very thin, from the teenagers to the psycho killer. (Bythe way, they don't even TRY to hide the identity of the killer in thisremake!) Gorehounds will be disappointed that the PG-13 rating preventsany serious bloodshed. Needless to say, there's also no gratuitousnudity and sex. (By the way, if you are thinking the unrated version onDVD has the missing blood and sexual content, it doesn't.) The onlyreason to watch this movie is if you're a depressed teen and want tosee that there are people your age with shallower and emptier livesthan yours.
this movie sucked! the story didn't make sense at all. i thought it was a slasher film, but it's more of a comedy with the bad acting!!it's so predictable.LOW BUDGET quality, this movie felt like those crappy movies on sci-fi channel or cinemax,or those cheap movies you would see in a gas station.only stupid retarded teens would like this film.
I had high hopes for this movie... well I had mediocre hopes for it. Ithought okay another slasher film with people getting murdered but heythat can be kind of fun. This was not. It starts out really slowly andthe atmosphere isn't even all good that then turns to bad it begins ina kind of half-good/ half-bad kind of limbo where you're not reallysure if you should feel on edge or relaxed.... anyway the back story isskimmed over and I'm pretty sure they mention how the killer escapedonce- briefly... it didn't make much sense to me- you'd think they'dbuild maximum security asylums to keep people in and that when someoneescaped it wouldn't be such a ho-hum affair as these people lead you tobelieve it is. I'd certainly be worried if in real life it was treatedso casually.Anyway they get to the prom and the horror begins. Death aftermeaningless death ensues and each one again is taken very causally bythe film and suspense isn't really built unless there's some actionsurrounding Brittany Snow. My main problem with this film is that thekiller goes for those separated from the others but it's all too easy. Some of them leave each other when in all honesty they wouldn't if itwere real life. Oh and no one thinks to grab a weapon. I'm sorry but ifI had a stalker- let alone one that tried to kill me before I'd besleeping with some form of weapon, even a taser or machete or gun...ANYTHING... and yet no one the entire movie- bar the police haveweapons of any description... there's an entire scene set in aconstruction site... COMMON! *ahem* anyway the film ends abruptly likemost of the deaths/ character development.... and it makes me missHouse of Wax... at least in that I had Chad Michael Murray to lookat...
Poor acting, no script, no plot, no convincing killer, no suspense, nooriginal setups, it uses the same closet/under thebed/person-behind-you-in-the-mirror tactics over and over again makingit repetitive and boring, and NOT in a foreshadowing way either, andthe fact that NOBODY ever "really" gets killed (at least not on screen), which in turn zaps any suspense it may invoke right out of it andmakes everyone feel eve MORE cheated for spending money on theiradmission ticket....its a horror film w/o any horror LMAO. The MOST yousee is what looks like someone having taken a ketchup bottle andspraying it across a plastic sheet. You have to be a teen who was sitting there screaming in the theaterand scaring yourself to have enjoyed this, or you were high/drunk atthe time.Honestly, I have a life and don't bother writing reviews that oftenunless I really really hated something, or enjoyed it tremendously. But this film is AWFUL and I feel I have a duty of sorts to warn youNOT to give your money to Hollywood and encourage this kind offilmaking ever again! It is one thing to rent a "bad" movie at blockbuster from theWeinsteins, its another when you have to sit through it in a theater. Also, in case you want some remake nostalgia, forget it! This is NOT aremake, nor is it a re-imagining. It is not scary, nor engaging, nor isit satisfying enough to be "funny" like others on IMDb haveclaimed...it is just stale and booooring. Here is what you will take away from this film: remembering the scar onBrittany Snow's head that stands out more than the plot, the fact thatJonathan Schaech MUST be having some sexual affair with J.S. Cardone of"The Forsaken" to have gotten another role as a killer(because he is asfrightening as my poodle, and too cute to kill just about anyone) andthat for some reason (duh) everyone who goes back to the hotel suitenever comes back. What kind of person would NOT get worried at the promwhen they decide to announce the candidates for prom king and queen andthe fiercely competitive girl just somehow doesn't show up? This is mywarning to you. DO NOT waste you're money like I did. The "original"sucks too but is more of a guilty pleasure for Jamie Lee Curtis fans, though no way near as bad as this piece of crap (sorry to sound vulgaror rude, but once you see this, you will understand why I say what Isay).
This movie is great. Dont let the bad reviews deter you away because this movie was entertaining, fun and enjoyable. Better than the other prom night with jamie. Yeah i know some of you hate me now cuz of that but its the truth. The chase scene was so awesome and very upset by the outcome but it was so good and everytime i see it im always rooting for the best, silly me lol. But its so good and its not a horror flick, its a thriller more. I was never bored and always like wow, i can never get tired of seeing it. Its a fun time so watch it, dont let the negative reviews fool you, just know thats its a thriller and not a slasher flick and youll be fine, promise. And i hate pg 13 movies but found this one perfectly done, like boogeyman, pg 13 movies that rock. I think im gonna go watch it again right now so you should to, now!!!! :)
I thought that this was a really good remake! Although the story isvery different to the original, to me, it's still a remake. In theoriginal, the killer was masked and you don't find out until the end,but this time, you know exactly who the killer is. In the original, theprom is at Hamilton High School, in this one, it's at a Grand Hotel. The prom was visually pretty! In the original, a little girl died sixyears before the prom, and the kids responsible swear not to tell noone, and the killer comes to the prom to kill them, in the remake, ateacher named Richard Fenton becomes obsessed with a student namedDonna, and he breaks out of prison 3 years later to see her again andwill kill anyone who gets in his way. I also like how it was morepolice-oriented and showed them searching the rooms of the hotel.Detective Winn is cool. He reminds me of Dr. Loomis in Halloween. Also,Donna is very sexy. If you want to see the movie for a straight remakeof the original, you'll be highly disappointed, but if you stayopen-minded and enjoy the movie for what it is, hopefully you'll loveit! I highly recommend PROM NIGHT!!!
