Predators: Bad guys fight bad guys, making a good movie

The spoilers within should provide no surprising elements. But there isinformation which you may not want to know because some observationsmay sway you from wanting to see the movie. None of these observationsshould keep you from going. However, the non-spoiler comments may beenough to keep you from going.Getting right to the not-so-revealing spoilers, Adrian Brody would bewise to leave out the faux-"Bale Batman" voice. Brody is not the toughguy he may want his fans to believe. To me, and this is not a slamagainst his talent, he is always going to appear punkish. Trying tosound like Batman was not wise. Forgetting his voice, he has a grasp onthe emotional values of his character. He takes on the role of leaderwith surprising and unexpected ease. Personally I think he was miscastas the leader but I could not imagine any of the others as the leadereither. So he wins by default and he actually comes out of it as avalid winner.Topher Grace....wow, what can one say? Eddie Brock again?? WTH?Seriously, get past the Eddie Brock phase. Leave Spiderman 3 behind.Bad guys don't have to be whiners! The Brock-like whining was way outof line.Walton Goggins was, by far, my favorite actor in this movie. Hischaracter was not much different from Boyd Crowder in Justified. Sleazyand persistently creepy but interesting and true to life(if you everknew someone like Crowder).Alice Braga is as interesting as she is fun to look at. MichelleRodriguez, make room for Alice. Two of my complaints were actually near movie killers. While I believemost people pay no attention to it, scoring in this movie was so faroff mark throughout most of the movie it was distracting. It often feltlike someone lifted the music from another style of movie, maybe a Coenbrothers drama. Chase scenes sometimes felt less dramatic thanks towhat I felt were musical miscues. Battles almost didn't feel likebattles. Those and other scenes would have been better if the music hadfit the scenes. And not related to music, in one explosion scene, flames could not have looked more fake if they had hired a grade schoolart teacher to fill the screen with comic book flames - totally out ofplace. It may work in cartoons, but the movie was far better than anycartoon. As far as the movie itself goes, I enjoyed this as a great follow-up tothe Predator movies, and was much better than AVP. The Earth people wecan all relate to are somehow kidnapped without explanation either tous or even the characters that were kidnapped. They all wake up as theydrop in on a planet via parachute. They quickly realize they are theprey on a planet supposedly used as a game preserve. Strangers dealwith strangers as potential enemies only to find that they are on thesame side whether they like it or not. More ammunition is lost than islove when the actual enemy makes its appearance. This is one of themysteries for me: once the search for the enemy began, it seemed therewould be an army of Predators, but eventually, it seemed more likelythere were only a few. By the end of the movie it became apparent asequel will reveal more of these Predators. The action, tension, and character interaction were most enjoyablewhile the plot was simple yet fulfilling. A couple unexpected momentsplayed well.I am willing to give it a 7 out of 10 despite my complaints because itwas better than an adrenaline junkies dream thanks to thoughtfuldirecting, acting, planning and filming.

Decent addition

This review is from: Predators (Amazon Instant Video) Pros:Good beginning with good characters. No toying around. They didn't try to give the Yautja more personality or character development than necessary to differentiate between them.No shaky camera. It doesn't look like the camera operator had too much caffeine. Cons: Point for point it follows the original Predator (Schwarzenegger) very closely, almost too close for comfort. Elements from Predator 2 (Glover) were peppered in as well giving this one a been-there-done-that feel.Overall I found this more enjoyable than either AvP, but not as entertaining as the original. With a bit more plot development this could have been the best one of the lot. If you're looking for a decent action flick its worth checking out.

Superb pacing, robust acting and a very fishy Fishburne all help to overshadow some poorly directed set pieces and ensure that the mandible-possessing aliens are back hunting with the requisite bang.

Good but could have been great

I am a massive fan of Predator and Predator 2 so I was really lookingforward to this, and wiping the AVP films from my memory. This nearlybut not quite manages to be the Predator movie I had been waiting for.The good points: It starts as it means to go on by dropping us,literally, straight into the action. From the moment the movie startsit moves along at a lightening pace never really stopping for breath. The Predator's are great. From the 'classic' Predator to the new morevicious ones, the design is awesome. Laurence Fishburn's character isalso really cool. The not so good points: The script follows theoriginal Predator movie almost scene for scene in some places makingthe whole thing too predictable. The characters are all scumbags andfrankly deserve to die. There is no one here who doesn't have it comingmaking it difficult to care when the end inevitably comes. ThePredator's aren't in it nearly enough. We spend far too much time withthe human characters who, as mentioned aren't enough to carry themovie. Finally the gore has been toned down here which is a bitdisappointing. However, all that said this still manages to be fun, andthe Predator's when they are in it are brilliant. So not the comeback Ihad hoped for one of cinemas coolest creatures, but still worth thetime.

Back to Basics

A group of soldiers and criminals find themselves dropped on a distantplanet that resembles Earth's jungles and forests. As the group searchfor a way out they realise that something is hunting them in theshadows. After the disastrous 'Alien Vs Predator' movies, it's nice to see thefranchise revived that resembles the Arnie movies. There are moments ofdread as we await the arrival of the Predator, knowing what thecharacters do not...its quite nerve-wracking. Adrian Brody takes on therole of the action hero quite well, I guess he developed a taste for itduring King Kong, his voice alone makes you believe he's tough enoughto lay waste to anything that comes his way, Alice Braga from 'City ofGod' does a good job.I loved the scene in which Royce says, "I'm not a good man. But I'm afast man." before he kills his attacker with one swift movement. Quiteunexpected. And the Predator vs Predator was epic, I'm not justthrowing that word around...Honestly it is 'EPIC', as the true Predatortackles what appears to be a 'Alien/Predator' hybrid to the ground andlays the beating. The one thing I did not quite like was LaurenceFishburne's character..I understand his vital role in the film, theexplainer of things unexplained...But I wished that the group couldhave figured it out on their own.Now I want to see another.

OK but I want more!

Robert Rodrigues has got his mitts on the Predator franchise and hisgiven us (as producer) what in many ways is a re-tread of the veryfirst movie - humans being hunted in jungle. The tweak is that thejungle is on an alien planet, although this is fairly irrelevant -apart from some alien hunting hounds and a spectacular skyscape itmight as well be in the Brazilian rain forest.Because the story, such as it is, is "last man standing" - in whatorder are the humans going to be killed, and in what ways? This is alldelivered in an adequately gripping fashion but, apart from theresolution (which I found very pleasing), this film doesn't reallyoffer us anything we haven't seen before. Even the "surprise" whenTopher Grace turns is no surprise because you know there must have beena reason why he was chosen as part of the group. And it is particularlyunconvincing because it flies in the face of personal survival.I find myself thinking that if there are going to be more Predatorfilms, they need to offer us a bit more. In particular, the Predatorsdeserve to be a bit more than merely slaughter machines in the JasonVorhees mould - maybe we need to see a bit more Predator culture, possibly even a bit of character development (not easy, perhaps, butsurely film-makers are supposed to be a resourceful lot?) After 5movies, all I know is that Predators hunt. I don't know why they arrivein spaceships with invisibility suits and then light up their camp withburning torches. I also don't know how the humans can unload half aVietnam's worth of ordinance face first at their invisible *rseswithout any effect whatsoever, yet Ms Sniper can then immediately takeone of them out on a transverse run with a single shot between heavytree growth.Ah well. This is not a movie intended to test your brain. Watch theaction, munch your popcorn, and enjoy.

Perception Vs. Predator

I was always an "Alien" guy. Wretched from the opium dreams of Swisssurrealist H.R. Giger, that phallic chest-burster is the mostimaginative space creature ever devised. It's a Superman/Batman debate, but by comparison, the "Predator," who was introduced to moviegoersalmost ten years later—Didn't seem to bring anything interesting to thetable. Like Batman, he had gadgets to spare—But where's the creativityin that? He was a villain that better reflected a decade of machismoaction than the seventies' horror boom that begot Ridley Scott'sfilm—Look no further than the casting of his foil, eighties icon ArnoldSchwarzenegger. So "Predator" and I parted ways. And though the two franchises would goon to literally duke it out in the miserable "Alien vs. Predator"films, the argument still seemed to me pitifully one-sided. But then, three days ago, something clicked. "Predators," a pseudo-sequel to theoriginal, finally won me over.I'm as surprised as anyone; in an attempt to emulate a film I disliked, director Nimród Antal made one I did. However, his intention was not,as others have hastily criticized, to parrot what worked in 1987verbatim. In fact, the influence of "Alien" on his film is just asapparent as that of its namesake (it even borrows the other series'pluralized sequel title gimmick), and the audience gets the best ofboth worlds. Run and gun action is superseded by atmosphere andsuspense, but Antal knows he's not making straight horror either. The filmmaker instead rides the line equidistant. He rightly plays thepredators threatening rather than overtly scary, invisibly calculatingrather than brutally aggressing. Their looming absence runs the risk ofupsetting some more literal-minded fans, but as someone who was neversold on the character in the first place, the less predator in a"Predator" film, the better. Plus, the deliberate pacing offers someinteresting, offbeat payoffs that I frankly wouldn't have expected froma movie like this—Anyone questioning "Predators'" originality needs topoint me in the direction of the other human on alien sword fightthey've seen. But as much as I love unprecedented choices like that, I can't pretendthere aren't also minor problems in this jungle. It's more of a warningthan a complaint, but you need to be willing to accept some characterclichés going into "Predators." Elsewhere, it may distinguish itself asa cut above its contemporaries, but the humans in the film snugly fitarchetypes exploited a dozen times over. Their big personas andpropensity for campy dialogue is soothed by the talent at hand (AdrienBrody—Whose range continues to amaze me, Topher Grace, Danny Trejo,Lawrence Fishburne), but a couple clunkers still shine through—You'llknow the misplaced rape joke when you hear it.But really that, along with one or two inelegant plot developments, isa small trade-off for all "Predators" does right. On the whole, genrefilms have become submissive entertainment, content to passively shovelinnutritious junk food into our eye sockets, with no regard for whatshould make what we're seeing scary or exciting. "Predators" takes itstime and explains itself—It creates a beautiful, believable world—Whilestill wearing a permeating cologne of mystery.Maybe this review ultimately says less about "Predators" and more aboutthe industry at large given that I find practical locations, largelypractical creature design, and a script that takes a few risks sopraiseworthy, but there it is. For once it's nice to just see astraightforward sequel done well, and the film has so much authenticadoration for its many sources of inspiration that it almost feels asthough it has existed since 1990, when the actual "Predator 2" debuted.Had this been released in its place, I'm confident the film would beremembered as fondly as "Aliens" is now.But sadly, in the realm of public opinion, many consider digging up oldgraves an automatic disqualification. For me, there's nothing sacredabout the original "Predator" film; this one improves upon it. Ofcourse, it's made by someone whose sensibilities are closer to my own,but Antal makes no apologies for that.Maybe I was always an "Alien" guy, but I may have room in my heart foranother hideous space monster after all.

Probably should have been the second or third in the series.

This review is from: Predators ( + Digital Copy) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) I very much enjoyed Predators and hope that the rather obvious hooks left for a sequel have traction. Certainly not a high-point in the career of Laurence Fishburne. In parallel, if they take some time to put AVP back on track (getting as far away from the requiem debacle as possible) there could be several more opportunities to enjoy the franchise.

Brandon Judell 2012-05-11 16:17:07

When Mr. Brody starts running about bare-chested near the finale -- you'll want to applaud his exquisitely chiseled torso. Sadly, a six-pack does not a movie make.

Fear is Reborn

Royce is a mercenary who reluctantly leads a group of elite warriorswho come to realize they've been brought together on an alienplanet...as prey. With the exception of a disgraced physician, they areall cold-blooded killers – mercenaries, Yakuza, convicts, death squadmembers – human "predators" that are now being systemically hunted andeliminated by a new breed of alien Predators. (20th Century Fox)PREDATORS brings back everything to the basics. It doesn't take placein an urban city. It doesn't take place in an Aztec pyramid in themiddle of Alaska. And it doesn't take place in a small town. Just likethe original film, it takes place in a jungle where this group ofpeople must survive. And let me say this now, PREDATORS managed to dosomething the original film failed to do: Create suspense. And it isthis very reason that PREDATORS is easily the best in the franchise. This film plays out almost exactly like PREDATOR, but with directorNimród Antal's sharp direction, it's better executed and infinitelymore exciting. For the first time in my life, I was actually freakedout by a Predator, and I just loved that! Sure, it took them at fivetries to get it right (including the AVP films), but it's better nowthan never. I was in the edge of my seats in some very intense scenesand the film also manages to bring in a few surprises.I also cared for the characters this time around. Adrien Brody beefedup for the Schwarzenegger role and he plays the action hero role reallywell. You might not notice this but Topher Grace stars in a supportingrole. I really liked his character a lot, playing the nerd. Alice Bragamay seem like another Anna from the original film but she has a lotmore to do around here. She plays a really sympathetic yet bad asscharacter. Laurence Fishburne, on the other hand, is a hit or miss. Heplayed his character a bit too weird and laughable, in my opinion, andhis clichéd lines certainly didn't help. The action sequences are also well made, along with the visual effects. One thing I like to give a shout out to is the make-up departmentbecause I really liked the new Predator designs (along with theoriginal Predator, of course). There's also the addition of Predatordogs, which I really loved. John Debney replaces Alan Silvestri as thefilm's composer but those who loved the original film will love thereturn of most of the original film's score. Gotta love those beatingdrums.I may be in the minority when I say PREDATORS is better than theoriginal film, but I do know that I am not the only person to like thisfilm. Director Nimród Antal is quickly becoming one of the morepromising filmmakers of this generation (any love for VACANCY,anyone?). Fans of the original will love the references to PREDATOR andwill find this film to be the "true" sequel, no doubt. I think it'sgreat to finally see a Predator film that is exciting, tense, andfilled with suspense and great action scenes.

Horrible! Adding more insult to injury

I have always been a fan of the original Predator film, in fact it's one of my favourite action films from the 80's. The sequel was quite honestly awful and the Aliens vs Predator films shouldn't have even been made, they were so bad. So all-in-all this series hasn't got the best of reputations, despite it's awesome original and it's fantastic comic books. So when I heard that there was going to be a new movie I was a little disheartened but hearing Robert Rodriguez was attached made me feel a bit better about it. Well, I watched this last night and I have to say I cannot believe that there is a film that is actually worse than AvP! The story is ridiculous. The characters are pathetic and are complete wannabes of the classic original line-up, but nowhere near as cool (if cool at all!) - and what's with Aiden Brody's Batman voice?? And what was honestly the point of Lawrence Fishburn's character? And Danny Trego was a wasted opportunity as he was the only real tough guy out of the whole cast. You don't actually get to see a Predator (other than the one tied up) for about 45 minutes - by then I'd already pretty much given up with the film that I didn't care when I saw one. Everything about this film is bad. I hated it. One star.

Predators - it's pretty good

With Predators we escape from the slightly underwhelming concretejungle of Predator 2, the shitty snow not-a-jungle jungle of AVP andwhatever location they had for its sequel that no-one with any sensebothered to watch and return to Arnies domain of just-a-jungle jungle.Except we are in space on a mysterious world with several funny lookingmoons and suns. Being back in a jungle, and being thrown into itstraight away (no bullshit waiting) starts Predators off on the rightfoot. Luckily it manages to stay on that foot and ends up being a veryenjoyable, if flawed, b-movie style popcorn flick. After following Brody's descent in hell we get introduced to our motleygroup of lovably cheesy characters one by one. There's Topher Grace,Alice Braga, Morpheus, Danny Trejo and some guys with long names. Eachholds their own exploiting their character traits to a level that'sacceptable to make them seem real enough people instead of extremelyannoying walking lumps of flesh. I think Brody does well, he's no Dutch– and certainly seems far smaller in comparison – but does a goodenough job to warrant him leading the pack and making the film wellworth seeing. Essentially all the characters are lambs for theslaughter and you're just waiting for them to die, but they're wellcrafted enough for you to care when your favourite one dies.Unfortunately my favourite character died first, damn. From here thestory is kept simple and follows them looking around for a bit, findingout where they are for a bit and then trying to survive a bit. Well,it's not that simple. There are some ethical issues thrown in alongwith a sort of twist for good measure and it manages to be directed andshot with creative flair making it feel far more personal and thereforelikable compared to much of Hollywoods action based output. CongratsRodriguez & Co.In relation to the first film Predators makes a fair few lovablereferences to it. Best of all reusing music from the original to greateffect, making me feel like I'm watching a Predator film – which is agood feeling. Like Predator the film paces itself fast and never reallyslows down, and even when it does there is enough threat from thesituation to warrant a fair amount of tension. It's good that they wentthrough a check list of what to take and homage from the original touse in the film and what not to take from the AVP films, as well asintroducing plenty of new elements, and it's nice to see the Predatorsup to their no good shenanigans, even if the effects are slightly toCGI based to seem as realistic as the optical effects (which may soundstrange) of the first two films the creatures look nearly as good asever and fans will defiantly enjoy the Predators and their trademarkhot-spot viewpoint, which, unfortunately, isn't used nearly enoughthroughout the film. Fans of the first will also enjoy the credits, which hold a nice musical surprise. On the down side Predators isfairly shoddily written leaving more than a couple of plot holes andleading to slightly hammy acting at times, however, it manages to makeup for this is many ways and ends up being great fun if you can forgiveits setbacks. If you can't though, I can't say that you will enjoy itas much, although I'm pretty sure that you will be able to tell whetheryou will love or hate it in the first five minutes, it has some classtitles. One final thing: That shot of Adrian Brody, in the trailer, with about10 predator guns pointed at him might be a little white lie and counterto the amount of guns pointed at him in the finished package.

Yet ANOTHER disappointment!!

I don't know how this movie can get anything over a 5. Either thepeople who are writing the reviews are 12, or they really have no cluewhat a good movie is.When have the standards gotten so low for movies?? I read reviews aboutthis movie that said it is "good" because they did not "expect much",or because it was "better than the other sequels."(Which are btw someof the worst movies I have ever seen) A movie should be rated onwhether it is GOOD or NOT.This movie is NOT good. The story could have been interesting but itfailed, miserably. Some gripes that come to mind are:-As others have mentioned, why would highly intelligent aliens abductkillers just to hunt them? Obviously if they can abduct them, what'sthe sense of hunting them? -Why does Adrian Brody sound like batman? -How does Adrian Brody and the rest of the cast figure everything outabout the Predators and Planet?-As soon as you meet the complete 8 Strangers, you know right off thebat Adrian Brody and the chick will be the only to survive. Obvious asday.-Why do these highly advanced Predators need "dogs" to hunt & track thehumans? Again we are talking about a highly advanced species.-In the Original Predator, the Predator stalked and hunted a completeelite military force and killed them all but Arnold. How is it in thisversion that 3 bigger and badder species of Predators get killed mucheasier, by random "killers" at that, and on their own "huntinggrounds"? Seriously?-In the Original Predator you actually sympathized for the cast, because the movie was actually built up properly. In this version Icould careless who lived. Matter of fact I was hoping none of themsurvived.-The Yakuza character manages to wear his full suit throughout thewhole movie without breaking a sweat and still looking perfectly clean.Mind you he is running through a jungle, getting chased by Predators, alien dogs, dodging bullets, yet he is still in his suit allthroughout.-I agree with another reviewer, how the hell did the one Soldier builtsuch an elaborate trap with no tools. Not even McGyver was so handy.-When they realize they aren't on earth, it barely seems to bother anyof them. You would expect someone to either freak out, or think theyare going insane. Not here.-Laurence Fishbourne has managed to use the Predator's Cloakingtechnology, yet nobody seems to care or mention using it as potentialtool to fight the Predators. Laurence Fishbourne might as well of justbeen wearing regular clothes..-The Psycho Killer, no idea what that had to do with the movie. AnotherHollywood twist.I could go on and on and on...I feel like this movie was thrown together, with no attention to detailand lacked any originality. Half the movie is a spin off of theoriginal. A horrible one at that. The original Predator is one of the best sci-fi movies. The story, acting, everything about it is excellent. It actually kept you on theedge of your seat, interested in the characters, and sympathizing withArnold in the last fight scene.Predators did the total opposite. Bottom line if you were expecting arevival of the series like I was, you will be seriously disappointed.

The rise of a new franchise

Predators meets and surpass our expectation. It's a breeze of fresh aircompared with AVP sequels. Has a story, the thrill of novelty. It tookwhat was established in Predator and improved in almost every aspect.Don't read detailed reviews , don't view trailers, it may spoil it foryou. Instead go see it at cinema , pay your few bucks for the rise of anew franchise. Because, I can see things developing, slowly , detail bydetail to a bigger conflict between humans and predators. Clearly, there is room for more.Only thing somewhat disappointing, was the ending. I expected somethingmore spectacular.

Nifty little film, falls a tad short but still a doozy

Had Predators been made a few years back, before the Alien VersusPredator films soiled the property it would have been one of the mostanticipated films of its year. But in 2010, with cynical moneymakingexecutives raiding franchises left, right and centre for ways to cashin, the prospect of another Predator film wasn't as exciting as itmight have been. Luckily, this one is powered by a neat script fromRobert Rodriguez and astutely directed by Nimrod Antal (Kontroll,Vacancy, Armored). The film starts with a bang, its characters wakingup in parachutes mid fall to an unknown jungle, which soon transpiresto be a human hunting ground for eager Predator's and their attackdogs. The pace is smart, excitement is built throughout with blips ofaction and danger mounting bit by bit as the film proceeds. The film isshot on digital, which Antal uses skillfully, there is a real dirty, visceral feel to much of the film and action scenes have greatcrunching impact. The jungle may not be vibrant like the Schwartzneggeroriginal, but it has ample quantities of sweaty, foreign atmosphere.Effects are fine through, cgi is minimal and the various Predator'shave a suitably warrior like presence. Acting is all on the ball,Adrian Brody surprises with his convincingly bad-ass hero, tough yetultimately good hearted female interest is provided adeptly by AliceBraga, even Topher Grace doesn't do too badly in his incongruous doctorrole. Oleg Taktarov and Louis Ozawa Changchien also impress as Russianmilitary and Yakuza respectively. They spark well off each other, though the characters are not terribly well fleshed out. Which bringsus to the films main problem, none of it is well fleshed out. The filmis rife with ideas, there is a pleasing fan-boy aspect to the going onat hand, but nothing is developed. The alien hunting dogs appear once, and not again. Predator technology pops up once or twice but isunderused, alien flora gets a small mention but is just a contrivance, its all kinda frustrating. Also, the film is sadly low on gore, theoriginal was hardly a splatter fest but still had a fair few gnarlymoments, this film has one or two but is generally not as ballsy. Whichis a real shame, since by and large I found this film a lot of fun, butthinking on it afterwards it is a little peppered with flaws. But Istill liked it overall, I'm probably quite easy to please. Worthwatching in my book then, but no classic.

back to basics

Oh yeah, so much has been said about Alien vs Predators and his sequelthat everybody was afraid about the new follow up, Predators. It surelyisn't a remake of the original (1987) but it comes close what we haveseen then. The effects are much better up to today and it shows butstill, the originality of the 1987 isn't there. This time it takesplace at another planet. It starts of pretty well and is suspensefulnot knowing how and when the predators will attack. First there's anattack of some prehistoric monsters, and from then on you know, herethey come. The predators have evolved, funny part is, the old predatoris also still on the planet (the 1987 version). So somehow the movie islinked with the old one. The story goes that Arnold Schwarzeneggerwould play in this version but somehow it didn't work out so theyre-wrote the script. After 45 minutes it lacks a bit of activity, butlater on it picks up pretty well. It clocks in at 107 minutes and itnever shows. The blood is running sometimes in gory fashion and theacting is pretty well. I really enjoyed it, naturally, it's an open endso I guess the franchise isn't over yet. Be sure to catch the 107minute version to watch it in all his pride. It's been hunted down bythe geeks, my version is already OOP on Blu Ray, containing a filmcell. I found it at a horror convention. When we arrived there were alot of them at several shops, just in the early afternoon they were allsold out, so far it's the only special edition (limited cineedition)...

Adrien Brody is a great actor but

2/10 I saw the original 1987 Predator starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, and kinda like it. I think you've nothing to gain by seeing this - even(after 23 years) with new material and effects. In the previews, a bigdeal is made about how this film is different but in the movie thedifferences are actually minimal and not worth a damn. The personalizeof characters is so bad and simple, The film's plot is awful. I wont gointo it, The cast is a funny joke!!! What the heck casting directorsreally felt? that replacing 80's action heroes with a bunch ofrazor-thins!! Adrien Brody is a great actor (The Pianist,Hollywoodland, Cadillac Records, The Village) but not a very convincinglead in this one. It's absolutely not his type, He's rough and stubbornbut not an action hero! From this director (Nimród Antal) I watchedVacancy (2007) and Armored (2009) and I hated both, now it's 3!! But Ididn't watched Control (2003) which I heard good things about. One ofthe producers is Robert Rodriguez...aaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh What the hell isgoing wrong with u man? Machete and now this...hey give up..

swarthylad 2012-04-30 21:35:30

Action Packed... Simple Plot.... It's a Predator Movie!

It's what you expect from a Predator movie... fast paced actionsequences and a continuing plot SURVIVAL! It's short and simple... it'sPredators not The Piano. They definitely ramped up the CGI and visual effects in this one. Fromthe opening sequence free falling to the planet surface to the finalbattles... OUTSTANDING! I must say relocating the story line to analien planet really set them free from earthly constraints and let themuse their imaginations a little bit.Adrian Brody puts on a very good performance and in a new role as aaction hero... played the part very well and it suits him... lets hopehe is given the opportunity again. One disappointment was the character played by Laurence Fishburn. Ithought they could have let the character play along a little bitlonger in their quest for survival. Given Fishburn's credentials Ithought it a bit of a waste. This franchise has shown itself to still be viable and deliver up theexplosions. I think we can be assured of at least 1 more Predatorsmovie.

The Thrill Of The Hunt Returns

Based on a script Robert Rodriguez wrote back in 1994, "Predators"finally makes it to the big screen 16 years later. It's also the firstdirect Predator sequel (without Aliens in it) since "Predator 2" in1990, so it's good to see it back again like an old friend returningafter a long absence."Predators" has an interesting premise. The Predator species are nolonger content to travel all the way to earth to hunt random victims inhot zones of conflict (did Schwarzenegger's victory convince them thathumans had an unfair home advantage on Earth?). Now, their hunts arepremeditated; they stalk their human prey, kidnap them from Earth andparachute them onto their home planet so the games can begin on theirterms and on their turf. The prey here is the usual multi-ethnic mix familiar from the original"Predator" movies and "Alien." We have the Hispanic female (Alice Bragafrom "I Am Legend") and the black mercenary, etc. We also get new typeslike a Japanese Yakuza gangster, a death row prisoner and a fighterfrom Chechnya no less. They do the usual squabbling/bonding as they tryto figure out what the hell is going on.Laurence Fishburne shows up for an all-too-brief cameo (with"Apocalypse Now" references) as a nutty lone survivor of previousPredator hunts. He has an imaginary friend that he talks to all thetime and Fishburne is clearly having a blast, but he is not in it longenough. Pity. There is a surprising amount of dialogue and Alan Silvestri's scorelifted from the original "Predator" movie. They even pinch lines fromJames Cameron's Aliens.Adrien Brody was a surprise casting choice for the lead here; he's notthe first guy you think of as an action hero being quite thin and lankyusually. At the end though, he does get to take his shirt off(revealing a surprisingly buff bod) to go mano-a-mano with thePredator. Credit the writers for not going with the usual Predatorself-destruct finale. The end also has a twist and sets it up for asequel nicely (Rodriguez apparently wrote enough material for three"Predators" movies back in the 90s)."Predators" is a return to form for the Predator franchise after thesloppy "Alien Vs Predator: Requiem" and is a worthy addition to thegenre. I hope there will be a sequel (how about Stallone's Expendablesteam going up against the Predators? That would be awesome…hope you'rereading this Fox!) There's life in the old beast yet!

The movie never manages to come up with an ending, but why bother? There's going to be a sequel anyway.
