Jessica, the daughter of an impoverished apple farmer, still believes in Santa Claus. So when she comes across a reindeer with an injured leg, it makes perfect sense to her to assume that it is Prancer, who had fallen from a Christmas display in town. She hides the reindeer in her barn and feeds it cookies, until she can return it to Santa. Her father finds the reindeer an decides to sell it to the butcher, not for venison chops, but as an advertising display.

This review is from: Prancer (DVD) I have been showing this to my children, now my grandchildren every Christmas. I enjoy watching it after all this time. Very warm and touching movie and it's great. Hollywood should do move like this and leave the sex and the vulgarity somewhere else.
The predictable ending could have been improved if it had been less explicit. Then again, a subtle show, this ersatz tearjerker is not.
This review is from: Prancer (DVD) My cousin mentioned to me it was not Christmas until she saw this movie. Many times it is difficult to catch the movies at a convenient time on TV. So I surprised her with this movie as a Christmas gift.
Some occasionally clumsy dialogue only mildly undercuts the virtues ofGreg Taylor's thoughtful script, which provides a surprisinglyrealistic depiction of the joys and heartaches of simple lives atChristmastime.Rebecca Harrell is superb as 9-year-old Jessica, who finds an injuredreindeer in the woods near her Michigan farm and determines to nurse itback to health in time to help pull Santa's sleigh on Christmas Eve.She's a marvelously realized character, refreshingly minus the cute kidmannerisms of many a Hollywood acting tyke. I particularly liked theway she deflected her father's tirades with her singlemindedness ofpurpose: he might get mad at her, but she was still going to do whatshe had to do. Very childlike, and very real.A subplot about Jessica's helping a reclusive, eccentric neighbor(played by Cloris Leachman in a virtual cameo) seems truncated andunnecessary, but for the most part Taylor's scenario sticks to thebasics and is better for it. Characters surrounding Jessica act likereal people, not stereotypes, and events transpire with a sense ofrealism, not melodrama.Credit for this tale's effectiveness also goes to Sam Elliott, whoplays Jessica's father, a recent widower, with a harsh demeanor thatseems to mask real pain and desperation. Thus his rapprochement withhis wayward daughter carries unexpected depth of feeling and could notfail to move all but the most cynical. For a dad like me, I admit itput a big lump in my throat.Despite a somewhat flawed climax -- to my mind, the vfx shot of Santa'ssleigh coursing across the sky is unnecessary, given the magic momentjust prior to it that reveals reindeer hoofprints leading to aprecipice -- this nice little holiday film delivers a timeless messageabout faith and selflessness. Recommended for mature kids of 8 orolder.
Prancer is a very inventive and original movie that makes you want tothink about your beliefs. I was really surprised when I saw this movie,it is an enchanting time. I was expecting this to be a children's moviewhen I heard the title, and it is more than just a children's movie, itis a movie for the whole family. I can say that when I watched thismovie, I was genuinely surprised, genuinely surprised at what a verygood movie this was. While I do not think that this is a one of thegreatest movies ever made, I still think that it is a very enchantingmovie that I enjoyed all the way through from start to finish. While Idon't think that this is masterpiece of filming, it is nevertheless amovie that didn't disappoint me at all. This movie is a entertainingdelight that is a great movie for both parents and children. On a scalefrom one to ten, one being the worst and ten being the best, this getsa 9. My overall consensus is that while this is not one of the greatestmovies ever made, it is still a movie that is very fun and entertainingto watch and enjoy.Prancer deals with a girl named Jessica, who witnesses a rathershocking accident, a reindeer falls from a Christmas display over thestreet in town. Some time after this, she encounters a reindeer who sheassumes is Prancer. Hanging onto her beliefs, she later encounters andhides the reindeer in her barn at home, despite what her father intendsto do to it. In my point of view, I really admire somebody who isabsolutely determined to stand up for their beliefs, and so I reallyadmire Jessica since she is somebody determined to stand for theirbeliefs. Continuing on, Prancer is an enchanting movie that istouching, moving, and overall, just plain great to watch.Like I mentioned above, while Prancer may not be one of the greatestmovies ever made, I still found it to be an extremely enjoyable moviethat is a great movie to watch around Chirstmas time. So here issomething that I am going to say, you've got to see this movie if youhaven't seen it, because you will probably like it. I am not beggingyou to watch this movie, but I am still recommending it to you. Interms of ratings, while this movie also gets a rating of nine out often, it also gets a two thumbs up from me. So all in all, Prancer is avery good movie to watch and enjoy, I am recommending it to you.9/10
Don't get me wrong I really love this movie and it never fails to put a lumpin my throat however... (SPOILER AHEAD) I only wish towards the end they didn't show that reallygoofy special effect streak across the sky and Prancer flying off to joinSanta. Sure it adds the magic element that every Christmas movie needs butit would have been much better just to have the hoof prints going to thecliff and have Jesse hear the bells. It would have gone more along thelines of what the father was saying when he read the passage from "YesVirginia There is a Santa Claus" that as long as you believe, there is aSanta Claus and there is a Prancer. (END SPOILER) Despite this one short coming I still give the movie a 9/10 1 point takenoff for the ending. If you haven't seen it go out and rent it because it isusually overshadowed by "A Christmas Story" and every version of Scroogeimaginable during the holiday season.
This review is from: Prancer (DVD) The film PRANCER is a very moving and heartwarming story that helps each viewer of any age find the magic in Christmas. I recommend it highly.
This movie is a "must see" for every child. Heartwarming and inspirational. We've made viewing PRANCER a Thanksgiving Tradition in our family. It ushers in the Christmas Season each year. Share PRANCER with your children or grandchildren. You will be so glad you did.
This review is from: Prancer (DVD) At our house - we are Christmas movie fans, and this one is right near the top of our list with White Christmas, Its a Wonderful Life, and One Magic Christmas. Delightful, enjoyable and a heartwarming story of a girl who will NOT let go of her zeal for Christmas and all things attached to it.Great for all ages. And Sam Elliott still looks good even when scruffy in this movie.
Anything starring Sam Elliot has to be good. lol. It was a lovely movie for Christmas especially.
This has been my favorite movie my whole life. My mom said that she had rented it so many times from our local movie rental place that she just asked if she could buy it from them. That's what kind of movie this is. I'm now 13 and still love it. It's a great family movie that everyone will love.
It's Rebecca Herrell's unabashedly realistic performance as young Jessie that is the heart of this charming Christmas fable. Whether the reindeer involved is really the magical Prancer, we want to believe along with Jessica that he is. Sam Elliott plays the gruff father, a widower faced with losing his apple farm, and who has become embittered towares life. A glowing supporting cast including Cloris Leachman as a dotty old lady; Rutanya Alda as Jessie's sweet Aunt Sarah and Abe Vigoda as a crotchety veterinarian lends fine mettle to the proceedings. PRANCER succeeds because it's really an examination of family values, the need for love and acceptance and that childhood whimsy of belief in what may seem impossible. It's reassuring message of childhood fantasy is heartwarming and celebratory for this special season.
This review is from: Prancer (DVD) This video is great, full of exterior shots of winter and small town Christmas many may remember in their past as children. It is a nicely woven story about a family and neighbors and townspeople that shows how nice things can be in life especially during Christmas. It also does a good job of entertaining young children like my grandchildren so it keeps there interest througout the film, one thing they loved was the sleigh ride down the hill through a not so friendly neighbor's property, who then becomes a more friendly neighbor when her house is done up in long stored away Christmas Decorations as the story progresses around "Prancer" more and more throughout the film.Children will love it and at least "This" adult did too, first saw it on VHS many years ago when my wife brought it home and never fogot it and decided to find it on DVD for the youngest grandchildren to view. This is the 1989 release, the Original but the newer release refers back to this one so purchasing both was the way I went, didn't know about the referring back until I previewed it days from receiving it in the mail [Prancer Returns]..In short they make a good set for Christmas time viewing for an entire family, exterior shots are breath taking as live scenes show cold weather, snow and even a real town which will be identified by name in the credits in case anyone is curious. The actors are perfect in their respective roles so I doubt anyone with "Christmas Spirit" will dislike this video... I classify it as a "Classic" for Holiday Viewing for all Ages...
This review is from: Prancer (DVD) I already knew I loved this movie. I own it on VHS, but needed a DVD for a car trip. It's a tradition for me and my daughter to watch Prancer while we string popcorn for the tree. Yes, we were stringing popcorn on a car trip! My husband hates this movie and thinks it's sappy, but I love it. The little girl is so cute, and I love her spunky attitude. I'm not fond of the actor who plays her brother, but he IS supposed to be a little snotty for most of the movie so maybe that has something to do with it. Sam Elliott is the perfect grumpy Dad, struggling to make ends meet. It's a heartwarming Christmas movie.
i loved this movie as a child and still do as an adult. i loved the old ladys house and the friendship the end up having!!! the whole idea of the movie is great in my opinion a little girl finding prancer taking him in feeding him skipping school!!! such a great movie!!!
This is one of the great family movies ( of which there are far too few these days). I loved it and my children and grandchildren loved it. I would recommend to ayone.
Prancer is a sweet Christmas movie. Families can enjoy it together, but have the tissues ready! The little girl, Rebecca Harrell, is special. It's definitely a feel-good movie. Sam Elliott is mmmmmm-good!
This review is from: Prancer (DVD) I just love this movie, they don't make them like this anymore, good for kids and adults.
First of all, before I go on, I must say that the music score in Prancer by Maurice Jarre (father of world famous keyboardist Jean-Michel Jarre) is just superb. The haunting score is played throughout the film, and it gets me every time. I can't get through this film without totally breaking down (and I'm a 50 year old 250 lb guy). I think it has a lot to do with the music, but also the story of a child's love for an animal. This is the only film I totally cry over, so much so I haven't watched it on over 5 years until I saw it again on TV and it gets to me the same way it did over 10 years ago when I first saw it. The film is dark (not the story but the film itself) and it really works as I can almost feel being there in the snow covered hills of Michigan where the story takes place. I can feel the cold air as the scenery in the way it's depicted in the film is remarkable. Up until the very end, this is the most realistic film of any genre out there. This is in my own personal top ten movies of all time.
Its my favorite holiday movie since I was a kid. It just has that feel good feeling
