Practical Magic

Sally and Gillian Owens have always known they were different. Raised by their aunts after their parents death, the sisters grew up in a household that was anything but typical--their aunts fed them chocolate cake for breakfast and taught them the uses of practical magic. But the invocation of the Owens sorcery also carries a price--some call it a curse the men they fall in love with are doomed to an untimely death. Now adult women with very different personalities, the quiet Sally and the fiery Gillian must use all of their powers to fight the family curse and a swarm of supernatural forces that threatens the lives of all the Owens women.

Sorry excuse for witches

Although I found parts kind ofcharming and overall, for a "chick flick", I enjoyed it, I must say that for a movie about witches, the witches were lacking. For it's plot, witches weren't really needed. And even the witches that are present in the movie, they don't really do much. Nicole Kidman does nothing with her power but drug a psycho boyfriend so he can go to sleep and leave her alone. And Sandra Bullock seems to just have a spoon magically stir her tea/coffee and she can also can blow on a candle and light them that way. Take these useless scenes out and you're left with ordinary women. For a movie about witches, I was expecting a more magical movie experience.--wcg

A fun movie...recommended to all!

How can Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock not be a good combination. Themovie was extremely entertaining and a lot of fun. Take it for what it is,just plain fun. Not serious, don't read anything into it. They are bothbeautiful and did a great job. Loved it.

Very Interesting and Colorful

When I first saw this movie in theaters, I was verydisappointed. I was expecting alot..ALOT more. I really enjoywitchcraft and movies and book that deal with the subject. This movie did not deal with any of the organized religions dealing with witchcraft: Wicca, Paganism, shamanism, etc. It was very entertaining, and showed what witchcraft could and really is. It is the process of mind of matter. using herbs in spells, etc. the end, of course is a little over the edge, but still keeps the movie together..... END

Film Adaptation of Alice Hoffman's Best

This review is from: Practical Magic (Snap Case Packaging) (DVD) Books are almost always better than the movies that are created from them and this is no exception. What is different is the mood. The movie is a much lighter, more whimsical version of Ms. Hoffman's best book to date, in my opinion. All in all, it's a great story and entertaining to watch even if it is a departure from the original work.

Good Movie - Love Sandra Bullock

This is a fun movie with alittle suspence but not too scare that my two teenage daughter can watch without getting scared. Great for the little witch in all of us.

Has something to annoy just about everyone: feminists of either gender, Wiccans, or just people expecting a good movie.

There is only one good part of the movie

I think there is no magic in this movie. The plot is terrible and there is really no point to anything Sandra and Nicole do. The only good part of the movie was watching Nicole and Sandra when they were looking rather tasty. Especially the part when Sandra is bending over and tending the flower bed, that was nice.

Enchanting and Spellbinding

I thought the movie was great . What a terrific comeback , for the old religion . Although , it does add another problem . The problem being , that anything can be fixed with love and words . Other then that , it was great . The aunts . Well, they were the life to the whole movie . Besides , where ever Channing and Weist are , you know it's going to be good . I think they should have added a part for Stevie Nicks , cause she would fit right in with the script . Being spellbinding and enchanting herself . So if there is going to be a sequel , they should put a part in for Stevie . Other then that , the movie was fantastic , the soundtrack was the best . Especially Stevie's songs . With love , power , and respect . This movie was good . Bless be ...

The BEST movie involving the Craft I've ever seen

As a Wiccan, I was happily surprised at the treatment of witches in this film. Unlike the power-hungry, psycho teenyboppers of The Craft (a horrendous, disgusting film! ), this movie treated their witches with a light, humorous touch. As a romantic, I couldn't recommend this movie more.Though the special effects were very Hollywood, you have to keep in mind that this movie was made by Hollywood. No, we can't float off roofs; no, we can't raise the dead. Still, all in all, it was a beautiful movie; an affirmation of witchiness! There was little treatment of the religion of Wicca, but then again the women were never stated to be Wiccan. They are witches, yes, but that's not necessarily the same thing. Some of my favorite movie lines are in this movie (the other is "Ghostbusters"): "There is no Devil in the Craft."; "You can't practice magic while looking down your nose at it."; and "There's a little witch in all of us."I love this movie. I will watch it again and again and again. And I find myself singing the songs by Faith Hill and Stevie Nicks (wonderful, magickal Stevie!) at work in the middle of the day.Buy it. Watch it. Love it.

Fun, fast-moving, interesting picture

The term "Chick Flick," is applied as a word to belittle a movie in my view. This film features females in the primary roles, and males in secondaryroles. I was reminded of "Thelma and Louise, " and "Boys On The Side."I am ready for as many of these kinds of films as the director and producerwill create. This film tells a story. No car crashes, no machine gunbullets, no explosions.Right on!

huh???

If you haven't read the book, you'll be lost (I hope if you read the bookyou'll get it). We watched it and had no idea what was going on half of thetime...very badly edited and/or written! And this is NOT a comedy, as theads would suggest. Be careful when renting this one!!!

Okay adaptation

I really like Sandra Bullock, so I checked this film out and was pleasantly surprised by it for the most part. I had expected a tedious "chick flick." Instead, I got a fairly whimsical and engaging romantic comedy. There are many departures in plot from the book, but I think most were necessary since the story in the book unchanged would not translate well on the silver screen. I do have one bone to pick with the makers of the film: the ten minutes of melodrama that passed as the climactic moment of the story (and were not in the very good book) really, really, really did not fit in with the rest of the story. Nor did the sudden about-face in attitudes by the townswomen who shunned the Owens family in the book but suddenly became their friends in the film when the plot demanded it. Still, Bullock never looked lovelier and unlike another reviewer I think Aidan Quinn did a good job as her love interest.

Could've been much better...

I hate to see a good premise ruined. It happens a lot these days. PracticalMagic doesn't quite 'ruin' it, but they don't exploit it to its fullesteither. And what the heck is it with Sandra Bullock? She's gotta be themost 'undercast' actress; phenomenal actress, deserves more roles like ATime to Kill. I'm always impressed. Nicole Kidman is no slouch eitherthough she tends to be the sexy, misdirected lead. For the most part, you'll keep your attention on the movie, but if you watch it a secondtime...it'll be because you forgot it - not because it'sgreat.

I Put a Spell on you..... * * * possible spoilers * * *

Granted, this isn't the best movie on the face of the planet.... Notearth shaking or life changing in any sense.... But, it's a decentromantic-comedy-drama with some great performances and some fantasticlines....Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman portray sisters - WITCH sisters - froma small town in Massachusetts.... Very early on, a family curse takestheir father from them, with only their mother to care for them. Themother disappears - never fully explained in the film - and the sistersgo to live with their 2 old aunts - also witches - portrayed byStockard Channing and Diane Weist - 2 of my favorites in supportingroles! Frannie (Channing) looks great with long hair and herexpressions are priceless. Bridget (Weist) fills the role completely, offering her expressions and timely delivery to the tale. The 2 girls grow up in the magical household, learning magic asportrayed today by many Wiccans - by using some natural abilities withother natural ingredients, as well as some chants and incantations - toaffect their lives.... They learn of the family curse - that any manthat the family women love will die unexpectedly. The young Sally(Bullock) casts a love spell, asking for a true love SO unique that hecould NEVER exist - with qualities that are rare at best. Gillian(Kidman) wants to revel in love, and goes from man to man to man, leaving them before they can love her or after they've loved her todeath, as it were....The girls grow up into women, and Sally falls in love with a local man- a grocer - and tries to have a normal life - raising 2 girls alongthe way. Her husband dies tragically and she takes her daughters tolive with the 2 old aunts. Now the true fun begins for the family....The story line can seem a bit slow at times, and the comedy is scarce, but the movie goes along at a good pace... One of my favorite scenes isthe 'Midnight Margaritas' - something you have to see to believe....Channing and Weist are great as the 2 old auntie witches and Bullock &Kidman make a great pair on screen, as well..I give it an 8 out of 10....

See it if youve got a few hours to kill

This movie wasnt horrible, but it want great either. As much as i wanted tolike it for some good moments, i couldnt get into it whenever it gotcheesy. For example, the neighborhood kids chasing the witch kids and yelling atthem. Why?, no reason for it! Also, the aunts annoyed me and the cactusshaped pancakes were just stupid. The movies only only saving point waswiththe hottie foreign guy whose name i cant spell so i wont even try. Myverdict? see it, dont see it.... in the end it wont matter because ivealmost forgotten about it already. If you want a good movie to give a badreview to see it. This movie's plot has holes you could stick your footthrough.

Great Movie, It tells the truth about true Witchcraft.

The first time I saw this movie I knew I wanted it in my movie collection. I am a witch and this movie does not lay nonsense on people. My favorite seen is when Sandra Bullock explains to her love that Witchcraft is of nature and not of the Christian Devil. Very few films explain the truth. This is why I give this film 5 stars. It has educated many people about true witches.
