A fun little comedy

Post Grad is obviously not the greatest movie out there. It's not goingto win any awards, or be loved by the critics. However, it is still acute movie that allows you to escape for an hour and forty minutes. Ithas some really funny scenes, and has moral lessons to teach. It's notbeing received very well and I understand why. It's just a light, fluffy, little movie more suitable for the younger ages. I admit, itcould have been better but I wasn't expecting much from the beginning. It was simply a fun little comedy, and one that I'm sure many peoplecan relate to. I didn't find Alexis Bledel annoying. She gave the roleall it needed. Her love interest Zach Gilford, was cute and did adecent job. Michael Keaton was the funniest character hands down, andthe rest of Bledel's family offered much of the comedy in the film. Inall, it's an enjoyable film. I would recommend renting it though, it'snot really a theatre-worthy film.

Only watch it when there's nothing better on

When the movie ends, you can summarize it in only one sentence. Duringthe whole movie, we (two 18 year old girls) kept predicting what wouldhappen next and every time we were right. It feels like they almost gotit right every scene, but somehow only certain scenes lift up thequality of the movie. Most of the time those are the scenes with onlyAlexis Bledel and Zach Gilford. The parents of Alexis' character werevery annoying -except for Jane Lynch- and we couldn't figure out whatwas the function of the son and the grandmother. If they were there tobe funny, it didn't work. None of the funny stuff worked actually, except for a certain incident with an animal -people who've seen itwill know-. There were two things that kept our attention, mind you we're teenagegirls, was Alexis' gorgeous hair and her clothes. Choice of wardrobewas fabulous. in the end, this movie has many potential, they wanted it to be great, funny and dramatic but it just didn't work out that way. The storylineis too thin and the ending is very sudden, which is also very annoying. We've been watching the main character struggle the entire movie andthen it suddenly all ends. Only watch it when there's nothing better on.

Succeeds With Flying Colors

After college graduation, finding a job - make that finding a life canbe the hardest task. Alexis Bledel is ideally cast as the upbeat ifclueless young woman who, after her job aspirations got shattered, moves back home to a kooky (mildly put) family: Michael Keaton(propells fatherhood to new heights of lunacy), Janet Lynch (underused, but making the best of it), and Carol Burnett (priceless, as usual; shegets the best line catching her granddaughter in a compromisingsituation with the heartthrob Brazilian neighbor)...uh, and there's ayounger brother who licks other children's heads (don't ask). "PostGrad" doesn't explore new territory, let alone dodging every clichéthere is in the book, but it's got its heart in the right place and -like its protagonist - it's smart and funny and sweet.

Post grads will enjoy

I found this a likable and very relatble film. Yes, it may not be themovie of the year. But its still enjoyable and entertaining with goodacting and likable characters. I wanted to see this being a Gilmoregirls fan, and when I saw the trailer for this, I could relate. Bledeldoes a good job with the role, Keaton is hilarious as her father aswell as the rest of the actors who play her strange family. The moviehad a lot of funny moments, and the plot line is very relatble for allyou recent graduates out there. In this economy, many post grads arewinding up back home. And entering the real world is not as easy asyour led to believe before you enter college, most of us do believe, good grades in high school, good college, graduate college and land anawesome job! But it doesn't seem to happen that way. So take a breakfrom the job search and enjoy this movie.

Ghost of Rory Gilmore, Be Gone

So does Alexis Bledel plan to build a movie career out of tracing thehypothetical life trajectory of the character she created on "GilmoreGirls?" This is the second movie I've seen this year in which Bledel basicallyplays Rory Gilmore at the stage of her life she would generally be inif "Gilmore Girls" was still on the air. In this movie, she's a perkygo-getter who's aghast when she finds out that the world will notnecessarily adapt itself to her designs and whims, until...guesswhat....it does and she gets everything she wanted anyway. This movie is harmless enough, but the only thing that makes it moreworth your time than something from the straight-to-DVD bargain bin inthe supermarket (or maybe this WAS one of those films) is a crazy andadmittedly pretty funny performance from Michael Keaton as Bledel'sdoofus father.Grade: B-

Very funny comedy! Not just a chick-flick.

After seeing the trailers for this a while back, I was interested but wasn't sure if it was just another chick-flick or one of the many comedies that runs every joke in the trailer. Fortunately it was neither!I found it to be very funny and thought the entire cast did a great job. The story itself was nothing you'll remember, and the ending itself was very cheesy/predictable, but all of the moments throughout the movie were hilarious - I wonder why it got such bad reviews? I liked that the jokes were unique/odd - not just rehashes of the same lines jokes you've seen a million times like you get from some movies. I think it made the movie much more enjoyable. If you're looking for the next great movie, this isn't it. If you want to waste a few hours and laugh at some crazy jokes, check this one out.

Deserves reconsideration

The storyline, cast, scenery, and such are remedy for a decent product. The more I see it, the scenes are yes quirky but believably normal. Some comments I've heard about this is that the 1 star raring isdeserved but I wish this film was reconsidered considering the content. The editing may have been off or something but the meat of the movie ischarmingly comfortable to watch. The lines are great, don'tcha think?I'm keeping this as more of a discussion topic rather than an actualreview. From the house, the family car, the boyfriend situation, thetemptations lurking next door, the cat scene, I mean there are so manyparts to this movie that is lovable.

'Post Grad' fails comedy test - miserably

In a year of really bad comic movies ("Year One," "Observe & Report,""Funny People," "I Love You, Beth Cooper," among others), this latesteffort from director Vicky Jenson (her first live-action feature afterhelming a series of animated films, including "Shark Tale" and "Shrek")makes a solid case for falling below all of them.A VERY solid case. And that's too bad, considering some fairly talented actors take part(including Michael Keaton, Carol Burnett, Jane Lynch, J. K. Simmons, etc.) in this trip to the principal's office that makes "Land of theLost" seem like "A Night At The Opera." This picture is a cross between"Legally Blonde" and "Running With Scissors," and made me want to giveeveryone involved a month of detention.Kindergarten-level plot has Ryden Malby (the beautiful but talentlessAlexis Blendel, "Sin City") graduating college with high grades andhigher expectations. After failing to secure the high-poweredpublishing position she had been anticipating, she must now return toher parents' home and deal with her Hollyweird family, including wackydad (Keaton), down-to-earth mom (Lynch), cheap and cranky grandma(Burnett) and bizarre little moppet, Hunter (Bobby Coleman, "MartianChild").Meanwhile, Ryden's best friend from college, Adam (Zach Gilford, TVseries "Grey's Anatomy" and "Friday Night Lights"), who fancies himselfa singer - he isn't - is torn between his musical career or going toColumbia Law School (don't give up your day job, man). The gangly oafhas always loved Ryden, but never tells her, even when a Brazilianromeo, Rodrigo (David Santiago, "Che," TV series "Lost") swoops in.Even more annoying subplots include running over a cat, dad's effortsto sell stolen belt buckles, grandma goes shopping for coffins, Rodrigodirecting an infomercial starring "SNL's" Fred Armisen (dressed as agiant avocado) and little Hunter's desire to have the coolest soap boxracer of all-time.All the while, poor Ryden continues to feel sorry for herself and dreamthat she is more qualified than she actually is. Then, when she mightjust get the job of her dreams, she's willing to throw it all away on awhim. None of the actors here - good or bad - can do ANTHING with thisdisjointed, stilted, clichéd and totally humorless script (by KellyFremon, "Streak"), told in a series of poorly conceived vignettes."Post Grad" definitely does not make the grade here, and anyone whopays good money to see this bad report card should be expelled from thetheater immediately.

Eh

I saw this with my mom in the theater. We almost walked out after the first 15 minutes. Thankfully, it got slightly better.First problem: Alexis had more chemistry with ALL of her male Gilmore Girls costars than this person. (Yes, even with Naked Guy.) Their banter is contrived and not very funny. I know she can be funnier because I've seen it when she was just a teenager. The script is just bad.Second problem: It can't really decide what it's trying to say. Sometimes that's okay, since it can evoke thought, but this movie didn't make me feel very pensive. In the end, the wishy-washy message is that it's okay to relax and figure yourself out, and the people -- and men -- you love are more important than your career. (Which is the opposite message that the feminists wanted to hear, so I think that was a problem for others as well.) I don't necessarily disagree with the message, myself. It's just not very inspiring. One critic said it best when he said that this romantic comedy was light on romance and light on comedy. As a plus: A few times (with the cat, specifically), it made me laugh hysterically, and that usually doesn't happen to me. So that was fun. Just don't have huge expectations. It's mind-numbing entertainment at best.

Post Grad Movie Review

This is a terrible movie that they had to stretch to make it to that 88 minute mark. "Post Grad" was directed by Vicky Jenson and written by Kelly Fremon. It stars Alexis Bledel as Ryden Malby, a college graduate who had her whole life planned out until the job of her dreams gets taken by her valedictorian rival. She is oblivious to the advances of her guitar-toting, eskimo-pie-offering best friend, her family is nuts, and even the hot guy across the street who was Laura Linney's interest in Love Actually can't make it any better. All Alexis Bledel has going for her in this movie are her huge watery blue eyes. The rest feels like throwaway lines for her, I don't even get the sense that she's trying all that hard. Jane Lynch plays her mother and I love Jane Lynch and was sad to see her so poorly utilized. The one-note mother character could have been played by anyone and she never got to flex her comedic muscle. Michael Keaton seemed to be in a different movie than everyone else just being over the top eccentric and I was horrified that his character running over a cat was actually written into this story! It's morbid, awkward, and is only used as a device to get Alexis closer to Rodrigo Santoro who is certainly yummy-looking, but is little else in this. Poor Carol Burnett has probably never sunk lower as Grandma Maureen, a woman who believes she is at death's door and is cranky to everyone but again, not FUNNY. Why have these actors if you're going to use them so badly?? And the best friend played by Zach Gilford is nothing memorable, you will forget his face as soon as the movie ends. That all being said, the only thing going for this movie is the concept of the wake-up call to young people out there who plan everything out - get good grades, get scholarship, go to college, get good job, live happily ever after. You can do all those steps but your college degree is not worth as much as it used to be. From experience I can say I am a college grad and I am not using my degree. But that led me to starting my own business and I couldn't be happier so you don't know what path you will end up on but keeping an open mind and working hard can get you there. Ryden's naivety is a valid message, but the movie's comedy is weak, the acting is poor, the writing is terrible, and the 30+ minutes of filler with the family that they added just to have a full length film really shows.

Post Grad Makes the Grade

In a word, Post Grad is....pleasant. I say this because I waspleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it, and how it made me feelthroughout. Alexis Blydel plays Ryden Malby, a recent college grad whohas met little resistance in achieving her goals in life until shesuffers a bit of a setback. This rejection sets the tone for the movieby putting Ryden into situation after situation where she quicklyrealizes that life doesn't always go your way. After moving back homewith her family, (The hilarious trio of Michael Keaton, Carol Burnette, and Jane Lynch. More about them in a bit.) Ryde sets out to make herway in the world and find herself along the way. During her journey,Ryden learns about love, friendship, and the overlying theme of thefilm; family. Post Grad is very formulaic and you will swear thatyou've seen this movie a hundred times before. You realize that whilefamiliar, Post Grad has that special something that makes the 88 minuterun time seem to fly by. The best part of this film is Ryden's familythat I mentioned earlier. Keaton, Burnette, and Lynch are all cast inroles that aren't exactly in their comfort zones, but this trio puts agroup performance together that is funny and heartfelt. I found myselflonging for their next scene together. Post Grad is a charming andfunny movie that appeals to a wide audience. It's lack of originalityis quickly forgiven by it's strong cast and feel good message. PostGrad earns a C+ in my grade book.

Post Grad? More like .. Post-Bad

Really bad. Stupid. Not funny. Held on to watch @ 40 minutes but just coul;d not bear any more. Really sad because this movie had a decent cast. Who's dog did Michael Keaton run over to be consigned to this? Carol Burnett? Please!

Nice movie!

This review is from: Post Grad (DVD) Post Grad is actually a rare film that attempts to highlight the struggles of a recent college graduate in the current economic downturn. Although the movie is highly predictable and does not offer any shock value, it is high on entertainment. Alexis Bledel is ideal for the role and did a fantastic job while the rest of the supporting cast was alright. Overall, Post Grad is an entertaining movie to watch at least once but beyond that, it is certainly not the type that deserves a spot in your collection.

MBunge 2012-05-01 07:18:56

Keep looking for a better script, Alexis.

If you're a fan of TV talkfest Gilmore Girls, Post Grad is probably asclose as you're ever going to get to a GG movie. Lorelai is nowhere tobe found, but Alexis Bledel is basically playing Rory and she'ssurrounded by a clutch of oddballs right out of Stars Hollow. If you'venever seen Gilmore Girls, you'll only be able to tolerate this mildlyamusing and terminally predictable film until it wears out its welcome, which it does in a very big way.Ryden Malby (Alexis Bledel) is a young and ambitious college graduatewho's on the verge of getting the job she's dreamed of her whole life. But when that job goes to her lifelong scholastic rival, Ryden has tomove back in with her parents and deal with her father (MichaelKeaton), who's like a combination of Ralph Kramden and Norton from TheHoneymooners. When not preoccupied by her dad or her futile job search,Ryden also falls in like with the handsome foreigner next door (RodrigoSantoro) and remains an indifferent bitch to her best friend (ZachGilford), who is totally in love with her while she treats him like agay foot stool. Some funny things happen, many of which don't involveRyden, and then screenwriter Kelly Fremon pulls a major plot point andtwo big emotional moments completely out of her ass and gives Ryden aweirdly anti-feminist happy ending that the character has done nothingto deserve.Bledel is a pleasant and attractive presence on screen, though her eyesare so blue that there a moments when she resembles one of the Na'vifrom Avatar. Michael Keaton and Carol Burnett as Ryden's live-ingrandma use their comedy chops to breathe a lot of life into shallowlydrawn roles. And at only 88 minutes long, Post Grad moves along at agood enough clip to hold your interest for a surprisingly long time, given the extraordinarily ordinary story its telling. And unless you'vebeen dying to see Rory Gilmore say the S-word, that's about all thepositives to be found in this production. The negatives of Post Grad aren't that bad, but there are just sobleepin' many of them. To start with, Ryden is not all that sympathetica girl. She starts out kind of charmingly arrogant and presumptuous, then falls back into just plain arrogant and self-pitying. When that'scompounded by the exploitative nature of her relationship with ZachGilford's character, where she knows he loves her but she's content tokeep him around as a platonic sidekick, you're left with the extremelylikable Bledel playing someone you wouldn't miss if she got hit by atruck. Then there's the consistently poor writing. There's a subplot involvingRyden's dad and her little brother that, and I'm not joking, consistsof not much more than 5 or 6 lines of dialog and maybe a minute or twoof screen time but leads up to one of those big emotional momentsFremon pulled out of her ass. I didn't even realize it was an actualsubplot until it got to that out-of-left-field climax. Jane Lynch asRyden's mom is also given nothing to work with. Her character couldn'tbe more unformed if she were warm Jello and couldn't be more generic ifshe had a bar code on her forehead. And then there's a whole scenewhere Ryden literally does nothing but stand around while the storysuddenly becomes all about the career frustrations of the foreignernext door.By the time the ending came around and Ryden gave up all of the dreamsshe ever had for her life to fly across the country and be a girlfriendto Zach Gilford's character, after showing as much sexual or romanticinterest in him as Barbara Streisand would have for Rush Limbaugh, Ionly wanted this movie to go away. Which is unfortunate because PostGrad started out rather engaging, but the plot is so badly conceivedand structured that I felt like my intelligence was being deliberatelyinsulted.Alexis Bledel could be the star of a really smart and funny film abouta young woman trying to make her way in the world. This ain't it.

A Great Alexis Bledel Film!!

I'll be honest, I watched this film because I thought it would help me decide what I wanted to do with my life after college, but it didn't 'cause I already knew that I had to get a job. I just thought there'd be other alternatives, but it's still a great film to watch especially because Alexis Bledel is a very lovable actress. I also love the father-daughter theme because it makes me very happy. It's a decent film. I love that she has a friend who loves her very much and who she also loves. Her family reminds me of my family. I love that they are so supportive of her. I love that she is seen struggling with how to get a job after college because this is naturally what I think a lot of people do after college. I can relate to not finding a job you like and having to stay with your family for a while. I love that she gets employed in the end and she chooses to stay with her friend and to possibly get a job near him. Some scenes are funny. I like this film, and I recommend it to all.

A feminist's worst nightmare

This movie is about a girl that dreams of working in the publishing business her entire life. She works hard at getting good grades in high school so she can get a scholarship at college. She works hard in college and gives up on some of the more fun aspects in order to get good grades in hopes that she'll get the job of her dreams. She does everything "right" and according to her father in one scene, she even "ate all her vegetables growing up". This "vegetable scene" is meant to show that she takes herself too seriously and has been working too hard her entire life (she's 22 years old). HUGE SPOILER ALERT: She eventually gets the jobs of her dreams but gives it up in order to move in with her boyfriend who just got into law school. Apparently she's going to live in his dorm room with him (which to me seems unlikely for a university to allow). In the "you always ate your vegetables" scene, she asks her father if she should "give up on her dreams and move 3,000 miles away" and he tells her "yes". So let me get this straight - you worked hard you entire life towards the job of your dreams only to give it up to be unemployed and living in a boyfriend's dorm? This movie is a feminist's worst nightmare. It's also a nightmare for anyone (feminist or not) who has a daughter. Who exactly was the target audience of this movie? I can't think of any group that would care much for it. Maybe it's made for Archie Bunker or maybe the studio pulled an old script off the shelf that should have been made in the 1950's. If you absolutely must see this movie, do yourself a favor and rent it.

Grad isn't grand but, for those who like romantic comedy, it's sweet and funny

Ryden (Alexis Bledel) has just graduated from college in California. She and her best friend, Adam (Zach Gilford) are mighty happy to bedone. It is Ryden's fondest wish to work as an editor for a majorpublishing company in the Los Angeles area while Adam, an erstwhilemusician, may go to Columbia Law School. Yet, on the day she finds theperfect loft apartment, Ryden loses out on the editing job. She has noother choice but to move back home, with her sometimes unusual family.Father Walter (Michael Keaton) runs a luggage storefront and is alwayslooking for the "hot" new thing to sell on the side. Could it be beltbuckles, he asks Ryden. Mother (Jane Lynch) is fairly normal butyounger brother, Henry (Bobbie Coleman) is also a bit weird and wantsto build a small race car. Last, but not least, Grandma (Carol Burnett)has cancer and does things like "test drive" the comfort of coffins atthe local funeral parlor. Loving them is easy but living with them isdifficult so Ryden sends out resumes and goes on interviews almostdaily. Meeting a good-looking male neighbor (Rodrigo Santoro) helpssomewhat. But, suddenly, Ryden's relationship to Adam becomes strained, for he may want more than friendship. Will Ryden get a great job andfind true love? This is a sweet and funny movie, not grand, but verysatisfying. Bledel is the main reason to see it, for she is verybeautiful and surely has the bluest eyes in the world, as well astalent. But, Keaton, Lynch, Coleman, Gilford, and Burnett are all fine, too, especially Keaton in an unusual role. How wonderful to seeSantoro, for he is very handsome and deft. Scenery, costumes, camerawork and direction are nice, also. The script has a determinedquirkiness and zest with some fun touches, such as a scene involvingthe shoot of a guacamole infomercial. In short, if you like romanticcomedy and are young or young at heart, you will enjoy this littleflick.

In Theaters: Post Grad (2009)

"Post Grad" is the kind of movie that depends on its main character tobe a complete moron for the first hour and then to become a suddenlyenlightened individual in the last act. This time around, a casket, asoap box derby, and an Eskimo Pie bring about the character's contrivedenlightenment. The character is Ryden Malby (Bledel), a college studentwho has elaborate plans for her post-graduation life. We meet her asshe prepares to accept her diploma, smiling and giddy with excitement. Then, a string of terrible things happen all at once: she wrecks hercar, doesn't get her dream job, is denied for her dream apartment, andis forced to move back in with her borderline psychotic family. Yes, itwould seem that it sucks to be Ryden Malby…but I would happily wagerthat her life sucks a little less than the experience of having towatch it all happen.Read My Full Review At: www.thecinemaissue.blogspot.com
