It's like Bruce Willis on Titanic, there's even a little kid

"6 Feet Under" Freddy Rodríguez is on a roll this year, after playingparts in both "Lady in the Water" and "Poseidon". I can't help feelthat if he were the main lead, the film would have been interesting.But, hey, another short guy on a sinking ship?I don't remember the original movie, but I think the first one musthave had more drama and less effects. The whole story was a raceagainst time and fire and water, very edge of your seat stuff, butgiving the scope of the special effects and the premise of the movie, Idon't think they really showed what they should have. I mean, there wasa huge luxury ship sinking. They couldn't find more innovative filmingat least?The story short: testosterone laden blond guy saves the day. KurtRussell helps a little, too. Richard Dreyfuss would have been annoyingif not for the little kid and the omnipresent hysterical mother. Theloving young couple that would rather die than lose one another alsotried for most annoying, but weren't acting so well.But what about Freddy Rodríguez? He is a short Latino guy, what did youexpect? He died. The black guy, too. Nottable appearance by the chickfrom Black Eyed Peas. Unfortunately for us, the other three bozosshould have died instead.

Poseidon exciting but all wet

It is evident from very early on in the film that the script writingteam opted for action over substance. As a strictdisaster/thriller/action film, Poseidon is definitely capable ofgetting the adrenaline of the audience going. Admittedly, there are fewdull moments. That said, there is so much more that could have beenpossible. Character development is minimal thereby condemning a fairlydecent cast to being nothing more than two dimensional stick figures.The few subplots behind the main characters are superficial andmeaningless at best. Much of the budget has obviously been spent on themassive sets and special effects. If they could only have devoted alittle more of it toward a better script, this mega-budget film mightnot have floundered as badly as it did in the box-office.

Its intensity is strictly physical, the intended emotional impact submerged in a numbing onslaught of death, danger and derring-do as a bunch of mostly annoying, self-centered passengers fight their way to the surface.

It may sound strange to describe a movie in which just about everybody dies horribly as 'fun,' but that's what Poseidon is.

A decent popcorner

Okay, this picture was special effects from beginning to end, but youhave to admit that it's a roller-coaster ride and gripping good fun. Ofcourse it was stupid. For a start, everything would have taken place inpitch darkness, so there would never have been a movie at all. Andthere were more flames and explosions than in Towering Inferno ---- allunderwater. It was horrid seeing the Kurt Russell character drowning.It looked as if the director had studied what happens, becauseRussell's convulsions were luridly convincing. But within seconds weare laughing again because after he's drowned he has just one twitchleft with which to push the right switch. All the business with thepropellors at the climax was incomprehensible, and characters tookhorrific bangs that would have killed normal people === but like I say,it's a popcorner, and worth viewing in the right mood.

Read this, and you'll know how bad this movie is!

NOOOOO!!! This film was absolute trash! I see 'Poseidon' as a direinsult to the 1972 version. There are so many elements of it that arejust left out! Where's the diologue? Where's the interplay betweencharacters? Where's the flavour?!!!The movie is about a ship called Poseidon, and is hit by a rogue wave.The ship capsizes, and it becomes a struggle for the passengers to getout of the unstable boat. At least the original one wasn't full ofbulls**t! For example, the helium-filled balloons that are floating inthe ballroom seem to change to normal air-filled balloons.And it all happens so fast! I swear, only five minutes into the movie,Poseidon capsizes. There is no introduction for the characters, andthroughout the movie, I didn't even know their fictional names!And it is so predictable! Instantly when I saw that drunken cowboywalking over that makeshift bridge they made, I knew he was going tofall off. And he did! The guy gets crushed by an elevator - and Ipredicted that too! The ship sinks just after they get out - yes, youguessed it, I saw that coming as well.Don't waste your time with this piece of garbage. Get the 1972 version.Yours truly, Diodorino-Rotolo1

A decent movie...

This is a decent movie, worth to be seen. It has action, it has specialFX. I think that the rating is 7, not 5.5. I don't understand therating from IMDb, it is to small for this movie. So, go and see thismovie and you'll never regret. It is not special, but it is OK. The badrumours about this film are just rumours. Yes, no character development,good action, but ending spoiled it for me.

I read a common thread in most of the previous reviews: No characterdevelopment. And that is true. But in a movie like this, we get what wedeserve. I think technology is great, but it also has it's downside. Ithas created a generation of impatient people with very short attentionspans. Back when the original Posiedon movie was shown, there was nointernet, no one had home computers, no cells phones and no cellsphones to surf the net with. Talk about impatience, can't we wait toget home to surf the net. I just think that the director knew today'saudience that would go to see this movie did not have the patience tosit through any character development and got to the action as quicklyas he could. We reap what we sow.The special effects were good and most of the action scenes were "onthe edge of your seat" intense.The thing that really spoiled the movie for me was the ending.***HERE'S THE SPOILER****. Wasn't it convenient that a life raft with aflare gun was waiting for the survivors as they jumped out of the ship.Am I the only one who thought this to be totally absurd and cliché.

Could have been...

This could have been a great movie. Even though it had impressive special effects, it just didn't have the cast. The movie was too short. It should have spent more time building on the characters. Like I said, it could have been a really great movie.

Poseidon, just the movie!

This movie was one of those movies you will remember for a while. If you liked the titanic, you will love Poseidon. Although the plot of the movie came earlie, it was still a good movie. The acting was also good.

Why oh why oh why?

No need to rehash what many people have already said on this film---itis just plain awful!! Everything from the story to the special effectswas just plain lousy!! Where did all the $$$ go? There is absolutely noreason to put yourself through the pains of seeing this tripe---andtrust me, I'm a HUGE Wolfgang Peterson fan. I really was hoping forsomething along the lines of "A Perfect Storm", but alas........itseems we were given what was left on the cutting room floor from themade-for-TV version that starred Rutger Hauer. If your interested inseeing this story, and haven't seen the original---save yourself thetime and money, and buy or rent the original----an all-star cast withtop-notch effects and great writing----you'll thank me by the end ofthe movie. Stay away from this putrid crap.

WORTHY REMAKE

This review is from: Poseidon (Two-Disc Special Edition) (DVD) As a 10 year old, watching the original version of 'Poseidon Adventure' was at the time, an adventure. Up until that time, special effects were rather routine and sometimes unbelievable. Irwin Allen's masterful work made what could have been a trite film into a piece of art.After viewing the film the first time, the audience exploded in applause, as during the film's running time, each viewer was caught up in each of the character's life, struggle, and more often than not, their demise. With the special effects, and superb set designs, i also joined them, as i witnessed one of the best films i have ever seen. At age 10, i guess i saw enough 'Creature Feature' and what TV had to offer in order to make such a comparison.Since then, i have seen the original about 20 times, and each time, i do see, hear, and read between the lines more than what i saw during the previous viewing.Sometimes it does take more than one viewing to understand not only what the actors do on-screen, but what the director wanted you to see, or think, then you make your own conclusion.Now, on to the remake.I am one to not like remakes. At times, there are needs to remake an original film due to artistic mistakes, to update in order to include more gore, violence, bad language, etc. These elements sometimes hinders the mood of the original film. Take for instance 'House On Haunted Hill', '13 Ghosts', House Of Wax'. These films not only were updated, but were changed to a point where it bore almost nothing to the original, except it's core story, otherwise they played for more of the elements that made them repulsive.In the remake of 'The Poseidon Adventure', it did need an updating, mainly for the progress in the use of special effects, which were handled superbly. It took me awhile, like the previous critic listed here to get the nerve to see the remake. I was also kicking myself for not seeing it sooner, as i was blown away by the special effects.One must remember, the original film had actors that were all famous. The remade version had a few familiar faces, but to me the rest i did not know, which to me made the film better than the original since it didn't matter to me who died, as long as the the handful of survivors made it to where they were supposed to go, to the bottom of the ship in order to be rescued. Films like these will always have unfortunate deaths in order to move the story along, as this one has, but also, one must remember, this is only a film, and films do not have to be made to win academy awards, but to entertain, which this remake does, in abundance.The characters were developed just enough to care about them to a point, but was just enough to get the rest of the situation at hand when the wave hit, and the wave sure hits, and the action does not stop thereafter. In fact, there is rather little time from opening credits to the wave to get bored waiting. I gave the remake '5 stars' for the reasoning that all involved with the film did a job well done. Some, if not many who did not see the original should see this version first, just for the sake of seeing how far special effects has progressed from previous action films. Then, see the original, and see how the effects were at an age where effects were sometimes done in the camera, and manually, without CGI. Both versions are not to miss. As for the TV version of 'The Poseidon Adventure', well, i'd have to do another review on that one, but since it wasn't a great version, i will leave it up to others who may share my feelings.

*spoiler* how the hell.....

how the hell did that kid end up in that room behind a cage????? Thereis no explanation given for it whatsoever. The mom suddenly realisesthe kid has wandered off again and they eventually find him on atotally different part of the ship. It just makes no sense at all andwhat kind of mother in that situation would take her eyes off herkid??? yes i know its just a movie and i can't help but wonder if somescenes were cut out of the DVD release. The European DVD of poseidonclocks in at around 87 minutes. Is there an extended cut planned orhave europe been screwed over again by another shoddy DVD release? I really enjoyed the movie but that scene is just plain silly.Personally i think they should have let the kid drown. why oh why dothese movies have to have the token annoying kid in them?????

it is great!

This film needs no introduction - a remake of a classic movie from the70's about a sinking ship.I have watched the original, but I don't remember much because I wasvery young when I watched it. Hence, I have no preconceived ideas orexpectations when I watched this remake.I found this film very exciting. There were many times that I had tograb the armrest of the cinema seat or covered my hand with my mouthbecause I was so worried about the safety of the characters. My heartpounded most of the time. There were lots of special effects too! EmmyRossum is a great eye candy as well.I think this film is worth a watch!

Poseidon is named after the wrong god. The god of laughter and derision is Momus, who was cast out of Olympus for mocking Zeus, Athena and Poseidon.

"Poseidon" sinks

The original is a favorite of mine and I was looking forward to the newversion, but it's all style, spectacle and effects over any kind ofcharacter development. The capsizing scene is amazingly well done,although it happens too quickly. In the original, the ship began tolist a bit before the wave hit and here it just rolls right over. It'sa wonder the thing could even stay afloat at all! But it is still avery cool scene (we even get to see people on deck and in the pool asthe wave hits). Unfortunately, without the character development, youreally could care less who lives or dies. If you like mindless actionflicks then go see "Poseidon." Otherwise, pick up the original on DVD(a new special edition just came out).

depressing, but well done adventure

When i first saw the previews for this i was really taken back at howgood the effects were and that it would be a blast to see. Well as itturned out my emotions are mixed with this movie. There were timesduring the movie in which i felt that it was focusing on too littlewithin the number of people that were going to make it out. There's nota lot to say about this movie except that it brings you down to realityinstead of escaping. To say the least it was good based on the effectsof the ship. Overall i gave this a 5.5 because it didn't quite live upto the hype that it was expected to. I happened to see the remake on TVlast night and it's quite comparable to this one. Not a whole lot ofchanges, the parts played by Kurt Russell and Richard Dreyfuss werewell done. Anyone who is a fan of them or of the series will in mostcase enjoy the movie overall. My last thought on this is that it willin most likelihood be nominated for a couple of Oscars.

Good not great

Let me start off by saying I love Wolfgang Peterson as a director but Ireally think he needs to broaden his horizons. He is known for makingintelligent action flicks. I love him for that but honestly the man isa visionary and should try something new for a change. Anyway, to themovie. Good not great. A lot more intelligent and well researched. Itstill has typical action flaws like how an earth can someone breathunderwater for what feels like five minutes but thats an action flickand you appreciate that. Visual effects are amazing. I still think Troyis the movie that produces the best effects but this is a worthycompetitor. You also have your typical human interest stories which areone of the only things that annoy me in this man's film because theyalways feel like he has just thrown them in there without much care.The other thing about his movies that annoys me is the fact that hedoesn't work on his actors much. I liked Brad Pitt in Troy but a lot ofpeople didn't. I did not however like Josh Lucas and Kurt Russel wasalright but not extremely appealing. That said I thin the worst mainactor for one of his movies goes to Dustin Hoffman in Outbreak. It isprobably his best action movie but I laugh when I see Dustin Hoffmantry and be serious in this movie and I also think the man needs to workon his dialogue. I no this sounds like a scathing review but I didenjoy it and it kept me interested throughout the whole movie which isthe main point of a movie so yeah, I wouldn't hesitate to call this adecent movie, with errors though!
