After a sudden underwater tremor sets free scores of the prehistoric man-eating fish, an unlikely group of strangers must band together to stop themselves from becoming fish food for the areas new razor-toothed residents.
This review is from: Piranha (DVD) After seeing preview clips to this film, I went in with very low expectations. This film went even lower than that. I won't go into storyline because it didn't really have one except for teens partying on a lake half naked and acting like idiots. It was a typical braindead teen trashfest filled with characters no one in their right mind would care about and couldn't wait to see them die, except for maybe the sheriff and her two little kids.At least in the original film Piranha back in 1978, it had a storyline and was actually sad when the people died unlike this one where you couldn't wait for them to get devoured. It's definitely a film catering to lower spectrum brain functioning people. If you go into it without expecting much, you may still be disappointed.
Its only saving grace, if the film can really be said to have one, is that the filmmakers were fully aware that they weren't making anything that could be taken seriously.
Though it's campy and gory, but for all its hype, it's best to save your money rather than spring the dough for special effects that aren't that spectacular -- or even eye-popping.
If you read other reviews than there are people who love it and thosewho hate it really bad. To my opinion it depends of a persons age, ifhe'll like it or not. Obviously this movie is targeted at a youngaudience (16 -24) who are only attracted by the 3D marketing, and takethe rest for granted. Me myself hitting 30+ absolutely hated this movieand so did my wife hitting 32+. As I looked to my fellow cinemacolleagues, of which most of them were in the 16-24 year age range, Isaw them laughing and cheering as another boob was shown, or a helplessyoung woman was torn to pieces by the hungry little bastards. Warningbig spoiler coming up! Especially the scene where a torn of penis iseaten by a piranha and then pukes it out towards the viewer was theabsolute highlight of the evening for the younger folks. So there youhave it. If you like to see a lot of breast and buts, some lesbianaction, gore gore and more gore, you have to much money in your pocketand your in the age range of 16-24 than you must go and see this movie. Its great! If you do not fit the previous description, let is pass andfind something that fits your profile. Chop, chop!
I recently went to see this in 3D with a few friends. After seeing it,we came out laughing. The story is same old same old and very predictable. The characters were good enough for the film but it would be good toknow more about them. I cant believe Richard Dreyfuss was the first togo. The acting, well let me say Iv seen better actors. It was all aboutVing Rhames for me, with his awesome but cheesy quote The editingstarted off pore but then it got better through out the movie. The special effects again were good enough for the film. But my i ask, what was the point in the scene where two of the girls make out underwater with operatic music in the background? Also there happened to bethe scientist who knew exactly what the fish was and its prehistorichistory.Overall, this movie is pretty bad but again its grate for a giggle withyour friends. I wouldn't take your girlfriend to see it because thereis a lot and I mean a lot of soft porn references, for example a lot ofboobs. So don't expect anything fantastic. Just take it in as tongue and cheeklike i did.
It starts of with Dreyfuss fishing in a fishing boat at the lake, andhe catches a fish, and during this time he has a six pack hanging inthe water and pulls one bottle off to start drinking. When he opens thebottle, and takes a swig he has a fish, and wants to reel it in.He puts the bottle down on the side of the boat to get the fishing rodto reel in. The bottle he puts down falls into the water, and sinks tothe bottom of the lake. When bottle gets to the bottom, there is aearthquake opening a cavern on the bottom of the lake. While the cavern finishes opening up, Dreyfuss realized that the wateris turning into a spiral sucking his boat backwards into the lake. Hestarts to paddle as fast as he can when looking down the water spiralhe sees the baby piranhas coming up towards him.He does not paddle fast enough and boat tips over, and he falls in tobe attacked and eatin alive. It is great to see similar stuff from himlike in Jaws.Shows this kid at the beach talking to a girl he knows from schoolabout whether they are going to go the spring break party the next day.He makes a deal to show the good parts of the lake to a porn director. The sheriff goes home to tell her son that he has to baby sit hisbother and sister during spring break. Of course this is predictablethat he finds a way to not baby sit and go to the spring break party atthe lake.Later the sheriff Elisabeth Shue and Ving Rhames are pulling the boatout of the water late at night, and Shue falls into the water and isattacked by bloody dead Dreyfuss. One of the piranhas falls into theboat. They take the piranha they got to low and behold "Back to Future" DockBrown (Christopher Lloyd) who is a fish expert.Goes fast to the next morning and he shows up after paying his brotherand sister money to watch themselves while he was gone at the party. They take the money and promise not to leave the house, but they doanyways. The porn director and the girl and guy that was to show parts of thelake went with and drove the boat to a private end of the lake. Whilethey are over there they are making a video of two of the girls makingout and doing some wilds things to each other. While they are doing all that the people at the spring break party arebeing attacked by piranhas. I will leave the rest for you to figureout.Great movie and lots of gore.
I was afraid Piranha was going to be terrible...all promise with no delivery just like so many other horror movies have been in recent years. I can't tell you how happy I am to have been wrong. If you are an old school "there can never been enough blood" horror fan this movie delivers it to you in a very big way. The body count is high, the violence is exceptionally graphic, and the deaths are far more creative than you would ever guess with man eating fish as the star. What I perhaps found most refreshing is the utter glee the movie takes in dispatching its victims in pursuit of its well deserved R rating.Yes, there is nudity. Gratuitous, not appropriate for children, breasts as far as the eye can see nudity (after all, the setting is Spring Break on a lake in the desert). No one actually has sex, and its worth noting that it would have gotten the R rating for its gore alone, but if lots of bare breasts is going to be a problem for you this is not your filmIs it scary? Well...not exactly, at least not for me anyway. Its not a suspense movie, and there aren't a lot of "jump out at you" moments to try and shock you. But it doesn't take itself too seriously, with intentionally comedic moments that drew real laughs. This movie's entire message is "see those couple of hundred drunk college kids over there? Fish rip them to shreds in 3...2...1..." And boy howdy does it shred.A word on the 3-D. Yes, it is a conversion but it isn't too bad and is a far cry from the Clash of the Titans or Last Airbender debacles. There are a couple of sequences that do look pretty hokey, and some with very little 3-D effect at all. Some things were clearly shot solely for the 3-D "floating out of the screen" impact, and may translate very poorly once its on DVD. Still, for this movie the 3-D extra layer just felt like the right bit of icing on the blood soaked cake. Highly recommended for hard core blood and guts horror fans. OK for teens if they already have an adult understanding of the kind of violence they are seeing. Much too graphic (including too much nudity) for children under 14.
I will start with basic plot: An underwater tremor sets free thousandsof prehistoric fish during spring break when the amount of people in dtown is 10 times higher!Jake is back in town for the week to help outhis sheriff mother he comes across an old friend(Jessica Szohr) and anadult film crew( including Kelly Brook,Jerry O Connell and RileySteele). They then get stranded on a boat in the middle of the lake. Now my thoughts: This movie is fantastic! Its violent and gory with somehumor and the cast are great especially Kelly Brook, the 3d is alsoawesome!I insist you see this movie in theater's while you can you willnever have as much fun watching a movie as you will with Piranha 3-D
If your looking for a gory shocking thriller/horror this is definitelythe film to watch the plot is great it leaves you hanging on the edgeof your seat. The gory special affects are so life like definitely notfor the faint hearted better than the old version brilliant. Howeversome of the plot I felt was unnecessary however still a excellent film! The only thing bad to say about it is that it is classed as horrorwhen its not all that scary its very intense and gory but nothing thatcan twist with your mind. Only a couple of things that will make youjump which aren't terribly impressive.Other than that great film well directed 7 out of 10.
So I just got done seeing this movie and the first thing I have to sayis "Wow!" That wow is good and bad; firstly, parents should really makenote of what people are saying here, this is definitely NOT for KIDS!!I would even go so far as to say that it is not for adults with a weakstomach. The amount of gore, nudity, and disgusting content in thismovie shouldn't have warranted an R-rating in my opinion; it was quitepossibly the grossest movie I have ever seen; and I have seen somepretty disturbing movies. On top of that, the acting was fairly sub-par, but, what can you expectfrom a movie filled with d-list cast members? While some scenes werevery convincing, other scenes were so fake and unrealistic that thisfilm could even be considered a dark comedy. This goes for some of thescary sequences too, because they looked so forced in order to make theviewer jump, it was very unconvincing. The second "Wow!", I say because while this movie is disturbing it isall in fun. The movie is gross, yes, it is terribly acted, yes, andsome people would say that this film is not a film that shouldn't haveever been made by mankind. But, for those attracted to gore andextremely gruesome creature horror/comedies. This is right up youralley.
I enjoyed this new sequell/remake. Good Characters, actors, scriptoverall. Jerry O. was perfect as the Movie Director/Producer! LikableCharacters for the Sheriff and her Kids and supporting cast. Would havebeen nice to see more of Christopher Lloyd too. Maybe in a sequel. AndKelly Brooke-What else can you say but she is Awesome on Film! Wish itwas out in 2-D because it was not worth the extra $$ to watch withglasses. This was an Entertaining movie with lots of action, huge bodycount and some really mean fish. I might see it again if it gets out in2-D. Don't go see it expecting an award for anything other than specialeffects. It's not that kind of movie. Just enjoy it for what it is.
this is one movie that's not for the squeamish or the faint ofheart.there's tons of gore and blood in this one.lots of severedbodies.lots of nudity too.and a fair amount of strong language.thewhole movie is over the top, including the acting.i'm pretty sure it wasintentional.it's not meant to be taken seriously.if you try and view itas a serious film, you will be disappointed.there are somethrilling, nail biting moments though.but really it just a one big funfest.there are some funny lines through the movie.it's like Jaws onsteroids, the fun version.i wouldn't recommend it to everyone though.forme,Piranha (2010)is an 8/10
I really like Alexander Aja. I think he's one of the best Horrormovie-makers today. He's got it all for this film: movie-sadism,movie-tension, movie-intellect, so why doesn't this film quiet work?Maybe it's because the humour & teasing-pace sobers the 3D. Perhaps?Basically, what we have here is a schematic genre-movie. The 3Ddisappointingly offers very little (apart from Ms Brook, whichadmittedly is both tasteful & beautiful). So, technically, everything delivers but emotionally this film fails onall levels. I'd love to expand but just couldn't be bothered... much like thefilm's post-prod crowbar'd homage toward Jaws.
This review is from: Piranha [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) Director Alexandre Aja (High Tension) sets out to make a stupid, schlocky, satirical send off to all those "creature" movies we have seen over the years. What makes it successful it that it never takes itself seriously, but also plays it straight unlike the other spoofs of recent films. The movie also has buckets-o-blood, severed limbs, cool fish and babes in bikinis...and less. It's also in very effective 3-D and was even originally shot that way. In fact, the best 3-D shot ever is right here in this movie. Two grade 10 beauties skinny dip together under water while holding their breath for at least 5 minutes. What an effective use of technology. This movie is an unexpected gem.The film looks good in Blu ray 2-D as well. Nothing special as far as extras. Some deleted scenes, commentaries and storyboards, etc.
This review is from: Piranha (DVD) When good movie screen actors act for "just the money" they can stoop pretty low. The "Piranha" movie had somebodies money invested in it, plenty of great talent but no great acting, plenty of high end sets, but a pretty weak story line.Lots of large bosums, skillfully bloodied but what's the point?Stupid movie. Nothing to see here people, just move on.
** out of ****(Possible Spoilers): Another remake that aims low and succeeds in that effort. I just cameback from seeing it, and I'd rate it only about ** out of ****. Atfirst I was sure I was going to score it lower based on the ho-hummingfirst half or so, but later on when we finally got a full-blown gorypiranha attack on a hundred arrogant spring break swimmers, itdelivered some fun at last. Yes, that's the idea -- no elaborate storyrequired -- just that there's this lake teaming with man-eating fish, and annoying young Spring Break partygoers with no respect forauthority are getting chomped on (yay!!), and have to be saved ... sowhat else is there to say? I thought Elisabeth Shue was adequate as a toughie female sheriff forwhat little she had to do. Her son, played by Steven R. McQueen, wasjust your typical do-gooding, hearthrob boyfriend. The slimy andself-centered porn director was a complete jerk, but that was the wholepoint of his character and so it's quite satisfying when he gets what'scoming to him. Ving Rhames was wasted, but I certainly felt a littletouched by his character's heroic fate. Christopher Lloyd played hisusual dopey role, but I thought he could have been put to better use. Idespised all those partying "Girls Gone Wild" college jackasses, sowhen they finally became stringy piranha fodder it did my heart good. Some of the CGI effects were convincing, others were obvious and silly. Some of the over-the-top dismemberment sequences and carnage got to beunintentionally funny. This is just a mindless popcorn flick, nothing more or less. I had somefun with it, but it's not a good movie and I definitely wouldn't returnto it. When I left the theater I did spot one man in his 40s with hislittle son. They both seemed to enjoy it, and the kid was saying "Thatwas good", while pop concurred: "Yeah, it was just like an old horrormovie!" A word about the Richard Dreyfuss cameo at the beginning of the film.Yes, this was a clear indication that this film was to betongue-in-cheek, but at the same time I felt kind of let down to thinkof what became of our beloved "Matt Hooper" after JAWS. That is, untilI paid attention to the closing credits which had Dreyfuss listed asplaying a character named "Matt 'Boyd' ". So, my friends, he's notactually who you think he was!
Argghh. Yuck. Ptooey. If there is a more revolting -- literally -- movie than the remake of "Piranha" I hope I never see it. Alexandre Aja managed to throw every cliche in the book into this regurgitating mishmash: underwater earthquake unleashes prehistoric species which turns populated area into a giant Cuisinart, pulverizing everything they latch their razor teeth into. Blood and gore galore. Teenagers frolicking on the beach at spring break, silly obligatory side story, lots of gratuitous nudity (how this movie managed to get an R movie with all that boobage showing is beyond my comprehension), etc. etc. etc. Bodies chewed into holes, ripped in half, savaged in ways you won't want to imagine. You've seen it all a hundred times in a hundred other movies, most of them better done than this one.The whole movie is in execrable taste. Apparently one of the piranhas thought so too. The funniest scene in the movie takes place when the piranha chows down on a private part of the male anatomy, burps it back up and spits it out. That scene alone earns the movie a second star.Judy Lind
Hands down and body parts floating, the most irresistibly sick movie in years is Piranha 3D, which should be retitled Piranha 3D, Double-D and C for all the topless cuties director Alexandre Aja feeds the fish and audience.
Wow, i when yesterday to the movie and what a movie, omg i go to a lotof movies but this one is kind of the worst i have ever seen. I was somad about it that i spend my money on this kind of movie. For startersthe movie is about piranhas as all of you know. But the 3D effect inthe beginning of the movie is very bad, i mean bad as in your brainsstart to melt. I think the movies is so bad acted that you can startcrying. And there are a lot of thing that you can expect. Actually youcan predict the whole movie. I must say the only thing that was goodabout the movies where the couple of jokes. So if you combine the bad3D the extremely bad acting and the ending that you don't expect notbecause of a good plot but because it stop in the middle of the film. You get a movie that they need to pay you to watch it. i wouldn'trecommend this movie to anyone.
Just watched this Bluray on our home system and the story is rubbish but the 3d makes it great!!...plenty of gratuitous nudity to keep the men amused, lots of gore, a bit of suspense...all in all an excellent movie experience!
