Perrier's Bounty

An all-star cast has a viciously fun time in this comedy about lazy would-be thief Michael (Cillian Murphy of The Dark Knight) who owes local gangster Perrier (Brendan Gleeson of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix) more money than he can pay. When a burglary to raise funds goes awry, Michael s lovesick suicidal neighbor (Jodie Whitaker) kills one of the goons who come to collect and he is forced to go on the run. Dragging along his neighbor- not to mention his foul- mouthed, death-obsessed father (played by Oscar winner Jim Broadbent of Vera Drake and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull)- Michael has to stay one step ahead of the crime world while keeping his dad one step ahead of the Grim Reaper (Gabriel Byrne). Written by acclaimed playwright Mark O Rowe (Boy A) and directed by Ian Fitzgibbon, Perrier s Bounty is a cult favorite perfect for fans of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and In Bruges.

Visitors Review

Somewhat eventful but leaves a feeling of wanting more.....

I picked up on a couple of reviews of PERRIER'S BOUNTY in the dailynewspapers and thought - that is worth a look over!! Good cast -Brendon Gleeson Liam Cunningham Jim Broadbent Cillian Murphy et al -and a story of the shady underworld inhabiting Dublin......drugs, guns, violence, dog fights and other such delights. So today I packed myself off to the local multiplex and gladly boughtmy ticket. The premise goes that Michael (Murphy) owes Perrier (Gleeson) a sum ofmoney, which he hasn't got - two of Perrier's thugs tell him he hasfour hours to find the money - or he will have two bones broken. Thatsets him haring off to the local dive looking for The Mutt(Cunningham), the local loan shark. The Mutt tells Michael he is short- but is doing a job that night and needs a third man...So starts a hectic forty eight hours for Michael as he has run-ins withhis father (Broadbent), the girl in the flat below, her on/off lover, two sadistic car clampers, the local dog fraternity, the snooker halldrug pusher, the ASBO-dodging car thieves.......I could go on,mentioning the double-crossing and the underlying love storytriumvirate.Funny in parts but more chuckle-some than guffaws, the whole leaves youwanting more meat to chew over - there is not much to bring you in tothe story completely. When it concludes - and I had a doubting questionover the way it ends, up in the hills (not to give it away but thereWOULD be repercussions after the fact) - it leaves you with a sense ofit having just petered out.I give this film a seven out of ten - the violence is gritty andrealistic - Brendon Gleeson is a marvel! - but is bogged down byunnecessary plot angles and sidelines. A tighter script would have madethis experience more enjoyable.

A bit of underworld blarney from the Old Sod, "Perrier's Bounty" is another darkly comical-philosophical Irish gangster movie. The film, directed by TV veteran Ian Fitzgibbon and scripted by Mark O'Rowe ("Boy A"), doesn't quite work.

Stella Papamichael 2012-05-21 23:24:19

A little Irish charm goes a long way in this Dublin-set crime caper.

Matt Glasby 2012-05-21 08:49:09

There are flecks of wit and charm to be found in here, but really it all boils down to second-rate Ritchie.

Frank Scheck 2012-05-21 13:35:26

Enough already with the Guy Ritchie knock-offs.

Promised plenty but delivered very little! (And what's with the MAN word all the time?)

Once again a much hyped up Irish movie with an excellent cast is wastedby a disjointed shabby storyline which goes nowhere. It's one of thosethat you want to be good but only keeps your interest by some goodacting by the leading men, especially Gleeson who was badly under usedbut was brilliant. Jim Broadbent with an Irish accent... I don't thinkso & why the hell is everyone in the movie using the word MAN at theend of every sentence. I have lived in Dublin a long time & that wordin that context can only be associated with junkies. Yet it's aneveryday word used by the majority of people in this movie (I wasexpecting the dogs to bark out the words MAN!). Plot holes too wereeverywhere, especially regarding the police... where were they? One oftheir cars is stolen & the thieves are able to drive around at theirleisure... what about the two helicopters they have? Shootoutseverywhere & no police. The overall storyline went round in circles &when it was over it was a relief & a huge disappointment! Come onMAN... Make better movies MAN!

It recalls Guy Ritchie's back catalogue but, thankfully, without the self-consciously frenetic camerawork. The result is slick and enjoyable, but has a whiff of déjà vu.

Graham Young 2012-05-16 09:00:31

The violence is extreme and the humour is very dark, but if you like edgy comedies, you'll enjoy this.

Peter Keough 2012-05-14 08:39:29

"There's a point to all this drivel," says Gabriel Byrne's mysterious narrator. Or is the drivel the whole point?

If you liked In Bruges, you'll like this

This is not a movie to be taken too seriously, but if you are looking agood, lighthearted mix of drama, action and ironic comedy, this is afantastic choice.I've not researched all of those who were involved in each movie, butthe feel is very similar to In Bruges with Colin Farrell (which Ihighly recommend - especially if you've ever been to Bruges), maybebecause the great Brendan Gleeson is in both...The settings, from the bar, to the bad guys' headquarters are greatand, in addition to Brendan, the cast does a great job with what theyare given. I had not seen much of Jodie Whittaker's work before this, but I will be looking forward to more from here for sure.I did read another review that mentioned the fact that some of thecharacters were not fully developed and, while it may have been aconstraint of budget, having more background on Jodie's character wouldhave made you despise her boyfriend more and cheer for her and theprotagonist in this case.Nevertheless - nine stars.

Cillian Murphy on an (inter) Mission to nowhere

Michael McCrea owes money to Perrier. After one of Perrier's goons getskilled Perrier puts a bounty on Michaels head. Twisty, turny Irishmovie in the tradition of Snatch which is over-saturated bytoo-articulate dialogue and too many characters all speaking the sameway. Every second word is "Man" and F-Bombs a-plenty. As I was watchingthis I felt a great distatchment with the on screen antics, not caringfor any of the characters and their gormless antics - apart fromMichaels da, played effectively by Jim Broadbent with a wavering Irishaccent but real heart. The movie slogged along without any real purposeor imagination, without any real wit, and none of the scenes seemed toflow into one another with any great skill. Unfortunately it has to besaid that overall it was pretty much a waste of some fine Irish/Britishacting talent, yet it'll still probably get a DVD release long beforethe earlier Gleeson movie I Went Down. Pity.

Lively and rude, this comical crime thriller keeps us engaged with its likeable characters even when the plot begins to feel pointless

Michelle Orange 2012-05-11 16:48:55

Not designed to blend in and yet lacking the extra inch to distinguish it from its better-known kin, Perrier's Bounty is content to merely measure up.

A fun rowdy movie!

This is a good film. If youi like the way too many times mentioned "Lock, stock and 2 smoking barrels", or "In Bruges", you'll like this. The witty repartee had me rolling on the floor. The dad was excellent. Cilian Murphy was also very good. I place this a tier below "Layer Cake", and I consider that high praise indeed. It's a lot better than recent films like The Bank Job. Get this and be prepare to laugh. And not only, but also, be prepared to be entertained.

Stella Papamichael 2012-05-06 02:46:06

Ultimately, this doesn't have the emotional resonance of the similarly-themed caper In Bruges, but it does keep you smiling.

Good. Lot's of Subtle Dry humor that will probably be missed by many... recommended

Rented this on a recommendation from the video store owner, who likemyself, is into just about every genre. We certainly don't shy awayfrom foreign films, and this gangster/father-son story looked to beright up my alley.Like I mentioned in the title - there is quite a bit of humor here thatcan be hard to pick up because of its' dry nature, and because of thethick accents. It can really make the difference between this being acompletely average film, and this being a truly enjoyable, albeitlesser-known, humorous, and darkly adventurous tale. The cast is strong and the story moves at a brisk pace. It's in thestoryline vein of Tarantino or Ritchie, but lacks a bit of the panacheof those directors' work.Perrier's Bounty has good performances throughout, and there is littledoubt that those fans of the afore mentioned directors will find thisto be an exciting film. It's rated R for brief nudity, drug use, andviolence. The only stand-out negative would be the music. The music selectionswere great, but the volume of the music was WAY too loud compared tothe dialog and the rest of the movie. Maybe the music director was abit too proud of his/her selections. I had to turn the TV down everytime a song came on, and then turn it back up when the dialog resumed. The only other negative would be a slightly rushed and under-developedlove story that could have really put this over-the-top.Recommended. THose who liked pulp fiction and lock stock will find thisto be a good(not great) film along the same lines. LIsten carefully asmany of the hilarious lines can pass you by. The strongestcharacteristic of this film is the relationship between Cillian Murphyand the actor(who's name escapes me as I'm writing this) who playsCillian's father. Also, having two fantastic actors playing in the twolead Gangster roles helps immensely.71/100You'll like it if you liked: Layer Cake, State of Grace, or HarryBrown.

Matthew Turner 2012-05-02 22:17:04

Jim Broadbent is the best thing in the film, playing against his usual twinkly-eyed persona and clearly having a whale of a time...

Great movie !

This film was a pleasant surprise ! Made very much like in the fashion of "In Bruges", it is a gritty, dark story, but this movie is also pretty funny in its' own special way. Brendan Gleeson is perfect for the role of the irish "Mobster" and (oh, blue-eyed) Cillian Murphy is a real pleasure to watch as Michael, the guy in deep, deep trouble. And while you think that things can not get any worse, they do because of the "help" of his neigbour Brenda (very well acted by Jodie Whittaker) and his "nutty" father Jim (funny Jim Broadbent)... I really, really enjoyed this film !

David Nusair 2012-04-27 09:02:57

...boasts an impressively fast-paced opening half hour that's heightened by the uniformly agreeable performances.

Too Much Laughs With Very Little Comedy

Granted, this movie had its share of moments, but it's still moredependent in the comedy spectrum which is a bit misleading in itsbilling as an action comedy and the humor might be easier to decipherif you were from the land of the Celtics. "Intermission" helmsman IanFitzgibbon exhibits "Perrier's Bounty" is an overall letdown as itmerely touches the pinnacles of comedy that "Intermission" displayed inspite of a very pedestrian plot. Cillian Murphy stars as a young bloke who's in a financial predicamentas he owes 1000 smackers to a local hoodlum. After several attempts inearning the dough, his neighbor unintentionally murders one of thehoodlum's accomplices. This puts Michael, his neighbor and his father(Jim Broadbent)in a deeper hole as they are now on the run. Sure itsounds like a crime caper with a touch of humor, but it's overall amisnomer. It's just a standard comedy as Perrier (played by BrendanGleeson)has a few minutes of screen time and his presence is seenduring the dying hours of the film. The centerpiece of the film is onthe failed relationship between Michael and his father. Some of thehumor is quite hilarious, but most of them are staler than age-oldbread. It starts to fizzle in the middle, but recovers in theconclusion when the hoodlums become the center of attention. The acting was very impressive overall, though Jim Broadbent's accentwas a bit hard to decipher at times. The main scene stealer is CillianMurphy who really shows his comical talent and Michael was the funniestof the zany bunch. Not a terrible film by far, but just lacks the qualitative humor that"Intermission" possesses. And knowing the ensemble of talented Irishperformers, this movie should have been 10x better.
