We have taken some photos of "Outrageous Fortune". They represent actual movie quality.
Comedy-caper clunk OUTRAGEOUS FORTUNE wastes the considerable talents of Bette Midler and Shelley Long. Both have been in much better films, but even the other bombs in which I've seen them didn't disappoint me as much as OUTRAGEOUS FORTUNE. Was the story changed around once Midler and Long signed their contracts, or was the actresses' judgement simply that poor, playing people so stupid that you would think Jessica Hahn and Pia Zadora had first turned down the roles? And what is a title like OUTRAGEOUS FORTUNE even supposed to mean? Don't bother trying to figure it out, and don't let OUTRAGEOUS FORTUNE pollute your VCR.
I love this movie, Bette Midler and Shelley Long are great together. They go from enemies to friends, on a crazy chase to find this guy who's in some kind of trouble, but they never guessed how much, he had gone out with both of them, and they were going to find him to make him choose which one he wanted. They find out he's a bad guy, and save the day in there own crazy way, I love this film.
This movie was excellent! I loved the idea that Midler and Long are both actresses and find out in a morgue (because of their boyfriend's death) that they were dating the same guy. They find out he is still alive and he is a CIA gone bad. They hate each other, but team up to try and stop him. A hilarious selection and you will be on the ground laughing at Midler and Long's great acting! I would tell you more of the story but it would just ruin it... Have fun!
I did watch this very late at night, 2am till 4am, but I thought it waspretty worth it, from director Arthur Hiller (see No Evil, Hear NoEvil). Basically Lauren Ames (Shelley Long) and Sandy Brozinsky (GoldenGlobe nominated Bette Midler) meet each other in the same acting class, and eventually (after a while) find out that they both share the samelover. But when Michael Sanders (Peter Coyote) disappears and theyrefuse to believe he is dead, they go on a trip both to find him andfind out why they are being chased by bad guys, who turn out to be theCIA. Also starring Robert Prosky as Stanislav Korzenowski, John Schuckas Agent Atkins and George Carlin as Frank Madras. There are many goodchase sequences, but it is the comedic moments between Long andparticularly Midler that keep you interested. Worth watching!
If anyone has been tired of only seeing guys being the action buddies in movie and ladies only being the dramatic leads and/or buddies well here is a female action movie that works mainly due to fine performances by Bette Midler and Shelly Long. There are admittedly some weird elements to this film such as the inclusion of some Russian bad guys who I to this day do not know much about. Bette and Shelly play two ladies who find out they go with the same man who was thought dead but only to find out he isn't. They go on a search for him to show whether he loves one or the other. Only to find out he doesn't want anything to do with either of them and would rather get rid of them. Bette easily and naturally plays the tough, brassy, loud, streettalking New Yorker and Shelly the soft-spoken, proper, very ladylike character. The movie does work even with some of its uneven moments!! It will leave you laughing and wanting more.
By the end of the 80's they were churning out countless male buddypics, so why not a female one? This one features Midler when she usedto make funny big budget movies and Long when she used to make moviesperiod. Just like any buddy film, the two hate each other on firstsight, Midler the foul-mouthed antagonist and Long as the goodytwo-shoes. Things are set in motion when the two discover they were"boffing" the same man (Coyote) and decide to find him when theyrealize his death was staged. They set out on an oddyssey acrossseveral states and end up fighting for their lives when he shows ushe's not only a spy but somewhat psychotic! There's a great, ifcontrived, climax set atop skinny vertical rocks that are about 10 feetapart and 100 feet off the ground. But what you look for in these typesof movies you find, well-written bickering that should make you giggleplenty of times. Though guys should look out, with this written by awoman, there's a large dose of on target man bashing. Pretty much Longand Midlers last best comedy offering.
Its lots of fun in this movie (funny) well its very good
Bette Midler is the real standout in this film, which is by now somewhat dated. But she's sharp as a gold-plated rhinestone and makes this movie come alive. It's not that Shelly Long is bad; she's not--she's fine. But because of the more-than-cliched plot, it needs something extra to carry it through, and Bette does that quite well.Rather than focusing on the plot--that's been done above and by others--I'll just say that this could be a good movie to watch if you need a couple of chuckles (but not a lot) and don't have too many better things to do. Russian spies and renegade agents and FBI men who talk about season tickets to the Redskins--yeah, OK, great. Making a last-minute plane, posing as a cop, being chased by dangerous guys--uh huh, sure, right. You get the picture.
This is one of the funniest movies I Have seen, i can watch it over andoveragain. The cast is great! This movie provides comedy and intrigue as youfollow Bette Midler and Shelly Long on a rollercoaster through the countryfrom New York City to New Mexico. Outrageous!
Who were the [people] at disney that green lit this one! Bette Midler got an golden globe nomination for this film, thats a joke. The golden globes give out nominations like candy(she's been nominated for 8), her performace was a joke in the film. Bette Midler should be ashamed of making money off this film. Shelly has made herself the butt of many jokes in Hollywood, so lets not discuss her part in this film. The sloppy writing, ugly photography(the type that would make Jean Renoir cry), and poor direction by Arthur "carpool" Hiller. They should ban this film; its up there with Spiceworld and Startrek five. I'm glad to see that Bette Midler is a joke in Hollywood, her career is falling and she is no longer on the list. The next thing she'll do is a indie film to try to jum start her career. She'll need some luck for that. Bette Midler was nominated for two academy awards , both for bad films and bad performances. People in the 70's raved about her performance in The Rose, I don't consider is good acting when you're coked up and on pot everyday on the set. For the Boys? More like "Bring a Gun to Shoot Yourself With When the Movie's Over". If you want to see this movie fine, I recommend you stay away.

This review is from: Outrageous Fortune (DVD) I enjoyed Bette Midler in this movie. Wanted to have it available so I could watch it whenever I needed a laugh. If you like Bette it's worth it.
This review is from: Outrageous Fortune (DVD) Bette Midler and Shelley Long from Cheers are wacky and crazy in a movie about spies and biological warfare. A great movie for adults. Scary climax!
I love this movie. It is a classic and one of my all time favorites and I was thrilled when I heard it was going to be released on DVD. The transfer is great as is the sound. My only complaint is that on the DVD package it says the Theatrical Trailer is included on the DVD. It is not. THe only menu options are scene access and audio set-up. Probably a boo-boo on the Buena Vista people. Oh well. Thats all
ahhh.. why do i love this movie?its because they dont make them like this anymore. humor, romance, action, cheesy humor, cheesy romance and cheesy action. you can always tell a good movie from the eighties.and the inconceivable pairing between shelly long and bette midler. outrageous fortune is basically a story about two ladies who go on a wild chase across the country in the search for love, revenge, money and adventure. what more could you ask for?!and of course they become best friends along the way. i can watch this movie every so often and never get tired of it. hahaha, im not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing. definately go and rent it, at least once!
A true, classic comedy, starring the loveable SHELLY LONG and award winning actress, BETTE MIDDLER. The plot is of two girls, Lauren (LONG) and Sandy (MIDDLER), who both lead completley different lifestyles but share one common bond - they both have the same boyfriend! After he mysteriously disappears in suspicious circumstances, they are determined to track the scoundrel down which plunges them into a fast, action packed, cross country adventure. The stars chemistry shines through the razor sharp, witty dialogue. Well worth obtaining on video or DVD! A CLASSIC!
This review is from: Outrageous Fortune (DVD) This movie came out years ago and I am so happy it is on DVD. The storyline is lame honestly but the acting by Bette Midler, Shelley Long and George Carlin is not to be missed. The laughs come easily and the developing friendship between Midler/Long is too funny for words. Carlin is at his best as an unwilling accompliance.I recommend this movie for those who love to laugh without having to study the storyline too close.
Anything Bette Midler does is usually hilarious, that this film comes asnoexception, Shelly Long is also hilariously funny, watching them both getupto all sorts of mischief made me laugh so much it hurt. The landscape and filmography was out of this world, going from the cityinto what looked like the middle of Timbukto, the budget for the movie wasreally stretched, as were the acting capabilities of 2 of Hollywoods mostfunniest actresses.A really good film throughout.
Adversaries Bette Midler and Shelley Long take turns putting each otherdown while fighting over the same smooth-talking man (Peter Coyote, miscast but OK). Turns out their lover has staged his own demise and isnow on the run from the CIA. After this initial set-up is in place, there's nowhere really this slapstick comedy can turn. Midler and Longeach harp on the other's idiosyncrasies (for Long it's her snippygloating, for Midler it's her bossy brashness). The third act in thedesert smacks of plain old desperation, and poor George Carlin is giventhe shaft in an ignorant supporting role. For the first twenty minutes, the movie has a sassy appeal; it prods at the viewer for laughs like anR-rated sitcom, but does come through with some funny bits of business.Afterwards, director Arthur Hiller and screenwriter Leslie Dixon throwthe whole shebang overboard, with wacky stunts and silly characters, and one can only watch and wonder what these talented people werethinking. *1/2 from ****
Pretty funny star comedy with a couple hysterical bits.
