This review is from: Outrageous Fortune (DVD) I first saw this movie when it originally came out, I was maybe 10 years old. I loved it then, and I love it now. Two actress greats doing a hilarious job in what I consider a comedy classic. Also, who doesn't love the 80's?! It never fails to make me laugh just as hard as it did back in the day. I used to have it on VHS, but it was sold at a community garage sale by mistake. I was heartbroken (this was pre-internet & dvd days). I thought I would never see my beloved movie again. :( Thanks Amazon for carrying a wide array of classics and favorites!!!
Bette Midler and Shelly Long in some of the most hillarious work of there careers. This is a long time favorite of mine. I would recommend this to any one who appreciates humor. It is perfect for curling up on the couch with a bowl of popcorn. I would give this movie four stars. It has Bette and Shelly all over it.
Bette Midler and Shelley Long play two total opposites who hate eachother. When they discover they both have the same boyfriend, they set out tofindhim, with just about everyone in pursuit of them. Basic comedy startsoffgood, but gets silly and uninteresting as the movie progresses. MidlerandLong have decent chemistry, but it is not enough to make this film a realsuccess.2 out of 5
Anything Bette Midler does is usually hilarious, that this film comes asnoexception, Shelly Long is also hilariously funny, watching them both getupto all sorts of mischief made me laugh so much it hurt. The landscape and filmography was out of this world, going from the cityinto what looked like the middle of Timbukto, the budget for the movie wasreally stretched, as were the acting capabilities of 2 of Hollywoods mostfunniest actresses.A really good film throughout.
Great comedic pairing. Good fun.
This review is from: Outrageous Fortune (DVD) This isn't a lofty expression of great art or literature -- it's a thoroughly enjoyable, wonderfully fun experience. You'll find yourself quoting it when you least expect it. Bette Midler, "There-is-no-God!" and Shelly Long, "Nine years of ballet, *******!" Watch it, laugh your head off, and watch it again!
Eclectic director Arthur Hiller gives us another movie from his"odd-couple-up-to-their-neck-in-adventure" oeuvre with OutrageousFortune. The film has obvious similarities to Hiller's earlier hitSilver Streak, and is a clear forerunner to his See No Evil Hear NoEvil. In fact, the concept of ordinary characters being caught up ininternational intrigue found considerable favour during the '70s and'80s  besides the three Arthur Hiller films already mentioned, there'salso the likes of Hanky Panky, The Man With One Red Shoe, High Anxietyand Jumpin' Jack Flash (to name but a few).Sandy Brozinsky (Bette Midler) and Lauren Ames (Shelley Long) aremembers of a New York acting class. They are as opposite as can be ÂSandy loud, vulgar and brash; Lauren bookish, tender and sweet. Withoutknowing it they are both in love with the same man, Michael Sanders(Peter Coyote). When he is seemingly killed in a mysterious explosion, the two distraught lovers discover the truth about each other andlater, when asked to identify his remains, they realise that the bodyin the morgue is not the Michael Sanders they've shared a bed with forthe past few weeks. Thrown together by chance, Sandy and Lauren embarkon a cross country odyssey to track down their mystery man. Soon theyare up to their necks in international espionage as it becomes clearthey are not the only ones searching for Michael Sanders  indeed, theCIA and the KGB want him just as much as they do! The film is put together very slickly, with a fast-moving plot andplenty of snappy one-liners. At this point in her career, Midler was ona hot streak in a series of smash-hit comedies (Down And Out In BeverlyHills and Ruthless People being two of the biggest). Her character hereis either flat-out hilarious or horribly annoying, depending on yourtaste in humour. Long plays it straighter and comes across very likablyas the sweeter of the two hoodwinked lovers. Once the plot twistsunravel themself, the film loses steam and in its final quarter becomesa disappointingly routine chase movie like any other. But up to thatpoint, Outrageous Fortune is a lot of fun, a feminist variation of allthose buddy-buddy flicks so typical of movies from the era. It hasenergy, vulgarity and attitude - much like its two female protagonists and if you're looking for an entertainingly easy way to kill 100minutes, you could do a lot worse.
This review is from: Outrageous Fortune (DVD) This along with Jumpin Jack Flash is one of my all-time favorite comedies! Bette Midler is great, although Shelley Long really shines here! To name a few scenes that really stand out is the catfight scene in the morgue, the scene in the smoke shop when they are trying to get information from the manager, and the scene at the airpot when Long is trying to pull one over on the ticket agent! Long and Midler are complete opposites (probably in real life as well) so you can imagine the tension and bickering that will come along with it! As wannabe actresses living in New York that happen to be dating the same man who ends up screwing them both over, they set out on a cross-country chase to confront him and end up finding themselves in a fun-filled comedy-mystery that never loses steam! I highly recommend having this in your collection. You can watch it again and again and will find it hilarious each and every time! 5 stars all the way!
Bette Midler and Shelley Long are great as the lead characters. This filmisvery entertaining and funny. I love all the action sequences and BetteMidler's performance. But both Shelley Long and Midler are equally great.Myfavourite comedy of all time! Witty and hilarious. A mustsee.
Outrageous Fortune (1987) Shelley Long, Bette Midler, Peter Coyote, RobertProsky, John Schuck, George Carlin, Anthony Heald, D: Arthur Hiller.Hilarious comic yarn involves two opposite women who both have a flingwiththe same man and when he dies in an abrupt explosion, secrets unfold.Effervescent performances from Long and Midler in a perfect showcase forthem both, where credibility isn't the point, making it a lot of fun.Running Time: 100 minutes and rated R for strong language and briefsensuality.RATING: *** (out of ****)
I did watch this very late at night, 2am till 4am, but I thought it waspretty worth it. Basically Lauren Ames (Shelley Long) and SandyBrozinsky (Golden Globe nominated Bette Midler) meet each other in thesame acting class, and eventually (after a while) find out that theyboth share the same lover. But when Michael Sanders (Peter Coyote)disappears and they refuse to believe he is dead, they go a trip bothto find him and find out why they are being chased by bad guys, whoturn out to be the CIA. Also starring Robert Prosky as StanislavKorzenowski, John Schuck as Agent Atkins and George Carlin as FrankMadras. There are many good chase sequences, but it is the comedicmoments between Long and particularly Midler that keep you interested.Worth watching!
Peter Coyote did not know what he was letting himself in for inOutrageous Fortune when he started kanoodling with both Bette Midlerand Shelley Long, both fellow students in Robert Prosky's acting class. You do got to wonder what to make of a guy who's attracted to suchopposite types as Long and Midler. Shelley expands a bit on her famousDiane Chambers character from Cheers. And Bette Midler is simply BetteMidler and that's good enough for me.These two naturally don't hit it off, but when Coyote turns up as thevictim of a bomb blast, both Midler and Long show up to say they'renext of kin. Upon examination of the lower extremity of the burnedcadaver which is all that's left, the two of them come to the sameconclusion it's definitely not Coyote.Long and Midler just want to find this guy and get an explanation forhis behavior and to find out who he really prefers. But there's a lotmore to Coyote as the two of them on a merry chase that takes them tothe New Mexico desert find out.Besides those already mentioned look for good performances from JohnSchuck as the rather rigid thinking CIA man and George Carlin as adroll and philosophical Indian. You can't say there aren't any more good women's roles being writtenwhen you see Long and Midler in Outrageous Fortune.
I love this movie. It is a classic and one of my all time favorites and I was thrilled when I heard it was going to be released on DVD. The transfer is great as is the sound. My only complaint is that on the DVD package it says the Theatrical Trailer is included on the DVD. It is not. THe only menu options are scene access and audio set-up. Probably a boo-boo on the Buena Vista people. Oh well. Thats all
ahhh.. why do i love this movie?its because they dont make them like this anymore. humor, romance, action, cheesy humor, cheesy romance and cheesy action. you can always tell a good movie from the eighties.and the inconceivable pairing between shelly long and bette midler. outrageous fortune is basically a story about two ladies who go on a wild chase across the country in the search for love, revenge, money and adventure. what more could you ask for?!and of course they become best friends along the way. i can watch this movie every so often and never get tired of it. hahaha, im not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing. definately go and rent it, at least once!
This is one of the funniest movies I Have seen, i can watch it over andoveragain. The cast is great! This movie provides comedy and intrigue as youfollow Bette Midler and Shelly Long on a rollercoaster through the countryfrom New York City to New Mexico. Outrageous!
It's a most funny adventure comedy that I have seen lately. I never notlaugh so loud as in watching this awesome film. Fantastic Bette Midlerand pretty Shelley Long made up an incredibly and charismatic duet.Their characters and images are absolutely diverse, but they are aterrific and laughable team, without a doubt. Great director andveteran of cinema Arthur Hiller was able to make really timeless film, that will be make laugh else many generations for a long years. If youlike such old kind movies as "Midnight Run", "Overboard", "See No Evil,Hear No Evil", that you will be delighted from "Outrageous Fortune".Such films wants re-watching infinitely, you always find somethingfresh.
This review is from: Outrageous Fortune (DVD) I watched a family member open this movie Christmas Eve and was just as dissapointed as my sister to see the disc with several scratches on it. Ill be returning it!
Midler and Long are never less than fun to watch.
I'm STILL trying to figure out why this film was a hit.
I remember watching this movie on VHS over and over when I was younger and laughing my head off (even though I wasn't old enough to understand certain scenes).Years later, I'm surprised to find that the film has lost absolutely none of its charm and still makes me laugh just as hard, if not harder, than the first couple of times I saw it.Great performances from Shelley Long (brilliant, as always) and Bette Midler (whom I usually don't care for) as well as the entire supporting cast. Sure, you can tell it's a dated film mainly by the fashion and music, but the comedy itself is timeless and genuine. The only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 was because of the DVD itself. I'm not one for lots of features and extras in DVDs (none of which this DVD has, despite a listing on the case for the original theatrical trailer which is nowhere to be found on the actual DVD), but I wish the actual quality and presentation of the film were a little better, visually and sonically. I realize it's an 80's pop film and nothing glamorous, but in this day and age, you'd think people would put a bit more effort into these transfers for film's sake.Still one of my favorite all-time movies, though. Highly recommended solely for the film itself.
