My childhood memories

I saw this film 9 years ago, and it touched me on a deep level because Inever forgot it. I used to watch it all the time and than I got older andItaped over it, I never saw it again after that. Just 2 years ago I startedthinking about it again and I suddenly got this happy feeling. I thinkit'slike that with childhood memories. if I saw it now for the first time itprobably wouldn't affect like it did. I think that any 8-year old childwould love this film because it's magical and it's a movie you rememberforever...

watch it just for the adorable little girl

This is one of my all-time favourites, but there are so many excellentcomments here already on what makes this movie special that I'll justfocus on one of the main characters, the little girl. If you thoughtwhat's-her-name was adorable in E.T., then you're in for a treat inthis movie. Elisabeth Harnois is cute as a button, and she delivers herlines in the most charming way - genuine, not in the least smarmy andrehearsed. She's a great little actor, totally natural-looking andbelievable. I see she's gone on to a busy career in television, but inmy mind she'll never outdo One Magi Christmas. -- Is it a good point orbad point that the snow and weather is so realistic, complete with rainand slush and melt, just like in real life around Christmas? It's aWonderful Life has totally fake snow that always looks pretty. This isreal.

heartwarming story

One of THE BEST Christmas Movies Ever Made

I remember watching this movie as a little girl, over and over again... I was about 8 years old (3rd grade) when I first watched it. I saw that some other reviewers thought that this movie was not kid friendly, but to be honest - why shield your children from the real world? Why not teach them that situations like in this movie are happening everyday across the country? Open their eyes and educate them...Anyway, back to the movie review... for a holiday movie, I give it 5/5... my other favorite Christmas movies are "A Christmas Story" & "Home Alone"...

A stirring movie about an angel who helps renew a woman's faith in the spirit of Christmas.

I was a child when I first watched this movie. I loved this movie then,andI still enjoy watching it now. I feel that it can be easily compared withany of the holiday favorites. Although this title is not well-known, I amsure that you will love it. So add this movie to your list of must-seesthis holiday season.

One of the Best

Since the ghost of Christmas future showed Scrooge what would happen to him if he didn't change his ways, a host of stories have used the "alternate future" or "alternate reality" ploy to help their protagonist feel different about Christmas and life in general. Not since "It's a Wonderful Life" has such a story been told this well with such a brilliant cast. No, it's not the same plot. This movie involves a family who is facing financial and emotional crisis when a "cowboy angel" played perfectly by Harry Dean Stanton intervenes to help the mother, (Steenburgen) see it all from a better perspective. My family was very glad when the DVD because available, because our VHS copy had been played to death. Several folks have complained that it gets very "dark" in the middle, possibly too dark for very small children. It frankly isn't any worse than most of what is shown on Network television between 8:00 and 9:00 in the evening in the so-called "family viewing hour." But you be the judge; just know it's not "Mickey Mouse."To me the really harrowing parts have to do with the financial and social squeeze that the family is in. If you've never "been there," you may not "get" this movie or understand why Steenburgen's character is so battle-weary from the start. But the payoff is worth waiting for. One of Steenburgen's best movies, and that's saying something.Hope you get a chance to see it this Christmas season. Paul Race, editor, Family Christmas Online (tm)

Touching movie - in a good way.

** Spoilers herein!!! **I've just seen this movie, due to my job. Otherwise I don't really likeChristmas movies, they all have the same "let's make it touching" slimy,greasy feel to them, and I feel a bit old for that. But this one - I foundit very enjoyable, and - most surprisingly, even for myself - touching in avery special way.The story is about a poor family, especially about the mother, who doesn'tbelieve in Christmas, and thus, doesn't like it. A Christmas angel is sentto make things right, and through a quite simple, but very twisting story(somewhere in the middle I was very surprised, and it got even bettertowards the end), he, of course, succeeds. The whole thing is so special, sounusual, so emotional - it's hard to describe. In the middle, just beforeyou start to be bored by the poorness of the family - which is very deeplydescribed, altogether with its impact on the parents' emotions -, the storybreaks, and from then on, at first you'll be depressed (or at least, I was),and then, as the unbelieving mother gets back her faith, you're getting moreand more cheerful too. I don't know how this film got to me so much, but itdid, and since it's done in an unique way (not the usual cliches for kids),I don't mind at all.The positive aspects are Harry Dean Stanton (I saw him in Alien, and atfirst, it was very unlikely that he'll make a good angel after being eatenby a space monster ;) ) as Gideon, who is a perfect Christmas angel:misterious, but very-very likeable, and you can't help feeling some simpathyfor him from the beginning. At first, I thought about Mary Steenburgen as anegative point, but I figured that she was so annoying because it felt muchmore dramatic when she changed in the end, when she became a totallydifferent, very nice person. Also, Elisabeth Harnois, playing Abbie, isvery-very cute and plays just fine. And, I like the happy end - however,it's a Disney after all. :)[***Here come some major spoilers, be advised!***]Negative aspects are the happy end to begin with, however: the change in themothers beliefs is not quite realistic: after you've lost your husband, andalmost your kids as well, you're not gonna change because of a mere lettersent back by Santa. Also, the ending is VERY overdone in my opinion: whydoes everybody got to be happy? Harry, the would-be robber getting 50 bucksis okay (he was a great character by the way, simple, but very original),but Herbie, the shop manager, keeping Ginny in and giving her a break - mostunlikely. Why didn't she get a raise all of a sudden? Then I really would'veshaken hands with the director... :)) And, the very end with the money wasalso soooo predictable (however, it's the least I expected, so well done. :))But hey, it's Christmas, you go all with these things, and don't getdisturbed, 'cos it's a very-very nice movie after all, and once it starts totwist and turn, you begin to wait what's gonna happen next, even tough ithas a pretty simple story. I really recommend this movie for everybody, evenkids (despite someone mentioned the shooting scene... my message to worriedparents concerning this movie: "Beware, reality may cause damage to yourchildren's minds!" :)) ), and Christmas-movie-cliche haters, like me. Youwon't be disappointed at all!

Truly! What Christmas is all about!

Not a sugar sweet holiday story, but one of reality that can be realized by many of us. The magic is in the innocence of the children in believing and loving from the heart - not the purse strings.There is a happy ending - and it reaches into the child in all of us. Believe!

An alternate Christmas tale.

Warning, this can be a disturbing movie. This movie would be verydisturbing for small children, say under ten. Things go wrong and awoman's family dies, the father first and then her children. Yikes! Shemust go through an alternate reality that teaches her the meaning ofChristmas and learn what it was that led to the disaster. This movie isabout family values and charity, but is not above a Santa that has ahard edge. We are responsible for our actions and the outcomes. Yet itall comes out right and Harry Dean Stanton is a terrific angel-in bothsenses of the word. Mary Steenburgen is excellent, the husband andchildren are fair. I recommend it but don't give up in the first fewminutes, give it time to develop. Roger

open-minded

Excellent movie. It is a realistic view of what many low incomefamilies experience and how through love, hope and God (symbolized byGideon)daily problems can be met head on and defeated. Some peoplebelieve it to be violent and not suitable for children. I believe, ithas less violence then most children's video games, many T.V showsdirected at children (say The Simpson's - although, I think that toohas many redeeming values) and several other movie's containing deathand deceit as depicted in the Lion King and the horror of the mean kidin Toy Story. One Magic Christmas is an excellent movie to watch witheveryone in the family. It's heartwarming fantasy at its best.

A story for the whole family to enjoy!

I love this film! I think that financial and parental obligations can cause Christmas to be a very stressful time for many people. The main character, played by Mary Steenburgen, is a very unhappy person. She is obviously in a rut and the fact that another Christmas is coming, with all that entails, is not helping. This is a great story about seeing what you have, instead of what you don't. It is very emotional, as fairy tales are, and has a wonderful moral. It is heartwarming and appeals to the child in all of us. My family and I watch it every year!

GOLD, but What Happend to this great Film ?

Wow, what a great film. Why was it not released to the theatres? Disneydropped the ball on this underrated GEM. I guess they didn't know what theyhad. I remember when I was 4 watching this film on TV and being captivatedby it. I suppose it was just a Wonderful World of Disney TV Movie. A fewyears ago my father bought it real cheap on VHS and I had forgotten just howgood it was. To me, this film is just as good as any Holiday classic. It'svery comparable to the likes of A Christmas Story, A Christmas Carol, It's aWonderful Life, and The Bishop's Wife. It's a great film. The story, thespecial effects, and its realism are tremendous, but what really makes thisfilm so good is the cast. Great performances by all, especially Basaraba,Stanton, Santa, and the Kids. But Steenburgen should have won an Oscar forthis movie, her best performance in my opinion. If I wereDisney/Touchstone, I would remake this film, and cast great actors like SeanConnery as Santa, and Tom Hanks as the angel. With it's story and bigactors this could be the most successful Holiday movie of all time, no doubtabout it. Shame on you Disney, everything was there, but you should havereleased it to the movies. Now it's all but forgotten. The only way toredeem yourself is to Remake it.***1/2 out of ****

Putting the Magic Back in Christmas

My brother and sister and I used to watch this movie during Christmas Time when we were young. This year I bought each a dvd (and one for Mom and Dad too!). This is a heart-warming movie for the entire family--it makes me feel like a child again and all the magic of the holiday season comes back to life for me. Hope it does the same for you.
