An excellent movie

I missed this movie the first year it was shown so I was looking forward toit and it was well worth the wait. Drew Barrymore made the main character(Olive) very down-to-earth and likable while Matt Groening's trademarkhumorprovided a number of good one-liners and sight-gags. DNA, responsible forthe animation, did a great job as well in keeping the storybook appearancewhile breathing life into the characters. It's hard to say who the show was targeted at though since a lot of thereferences and humor weren't completely suitable for children and thewhimsical style might have warded a lot of adults off. I found both veryrefreshing however and will be looking to purchase the DVD. I think thisoneis bound to become a new holiday classic.

Fantastic pun filled fun for the whole family!

OTOR is one of those offbeat animated films that belongs in the same class as other regular films, such as Elf. Elf is one of those rare films that is unique amongst the already crowded genre of Christmas themed movies.....and OTOR also belongs right next to Elf. This has such a unique style of animation as they were trying hard to match the drawing style of the original children's book with the same name. Animation often tries to make us see cartoon characters in 3 dimensions (the exception being some of the Saturday morning cartoons that have been produced in the USA). OTOR the book was very much drawn as 'flat' 2 dimensional characters, and the film tries to capture that same flat perspective. The film has a good mixture of voices for the various characters. Coincidentally, Edward Asner, who played Santa in the Elf movie, also plays Santa in OTOR. Age wise, this movie will probably entertain from age 10 on up. There is little that would scare a small child, and the ending turns out as expected. There is a hilarious 'North Pole' area bar that is a treat to watch for adults. Unlike, "Charlie Brown Christmas" animated film [which I also feel is still worth watching again each year around Christmas], OTOR has elements that amount to quick sight gags that the animators have slipped into the background of many of the various scenes. Many of these can be missed upon the first watching of the film, but the magic of DVD, is you can quickly rewind and slow down the playback to better catch these bits of humor. The only element that might offend some individuals would be the casting of the USPS mailman as the villain, especially if you work for the USPS. There are a good number of puns, both in some of the background scenes and the actual dialogue. Some of these will go over the heads of younger children, but be perfect for older adults. Around our house, the catch phrase...."except the bunny" is used in context when we talk about good and evil. This DVD was out of print for a while, and I hope it is kept in production so that others can enjoy this film without the annoying 'USA' or "Cartoon Network" logos plastered on the bottom of the screen when OTOR shows on regular television.

A Christmas Classic for all Ages

This is truly a delightful DVD - we've yet to have anyone view it without absolutely loving it! Story is sweet and easy to follow even for the young ones, characters are familiar (Santa, mail carrier, bus driver, etc) and funny to children and really amusing at an adult level, the animation is terrific and the songs had the kids (aged 3-9) dancing about. It is also just the right length to keep younger children entertained without the need for an intermission.

Christmas Movies,...what the World needs.

With so much war and moral decay in this world at present time,Christmas has become my favourite time of the year. Not just becauseit's a festive season and colourful... but because its a time thatrepresents innocence and goodness in people. We need Christmas all yearround, it might make the world a better place. And that's why I am a sucker for Christmas movies so much. At the core,I am a die hard horror nut and general cinema lover all round... butone thing I cannot get enough of is an original and off-beat Christmasmovie. Over the years there's been some gems like: 8 Crazy Nights,Nightmare Before Christmas, Santa Vs the Snowman, Christmas Vacationand The Grinch (to name only a few). While 'Olive the Reindeer' is a few years old now, I only saw itrecently having heard many good things about it. It is a wonderfullittle film suitable for the entire family. The story is simple, sweetand subtley hilarious. One reviewer on IMDb said that Drew Barrymoredragged the movie down.... I can't disagree more. I thought she wasdelightful. She has child-like innocence in her voice that puts abelievability into the Olive character. Not to mention that sheCo-Produced this film so possibly without her involvement, Olive maynot have been made (I don't know!?).Anyhow, if you want a Festive movie for the kids and adults alike toenjoy.... rent Olive the other Reindeer. It's sure to amuse andentertain.

Toddler Mom loves Olive!

My two year old is in love with Olive, and I can only give a huge THANK YOU to the team who put this little ditty together. From catchy songs to hidden jokes, its a movie parents can enjoy right along with the kids, even after 37 or so viewings! I didn't find any of the content inappropriate for my little guy, despite another reviewer's opinion, it's all in fun for gosh sakes! Lovers of the book will find a different story here, but I don't think that diminishes this video one bit.

Great Flick!

I think that the word CHRISTmas is somewhat outdated. This is not just a religous holiday anymore. We many different people in the USA that's what makes it great. Some beleive in Christ some don't. Don't you agree if you were making a movie about the holidays and knew all people were watching whay offend anyone. Like Jewish people ect. The movie a about a cute dog that thinks its a reigndeer. ITS GREAT! Pleople who find this offensive need to read some really offensive material "the bible"

Sorry to rain on the parade, but...

I wasn't too pleased. I bought this video for my three-year-old because he loves the book--which is sweet and innocent (Olive ACTUALLY does think she must be a reindeer) AND sooo beautifully drawn, but the movie is filled with mean people and animals who are anti-christmas, shysters or simply selfish. The entire way through the movie Olive is working her way against miserable characters. I had a difficult time watching this and finally turned it off after Olive got to the North Pole--the reindeer beating up on Olive in the bar was just too much. This isn't funny for a three-year-old innocent, it's just mean. I would not recommend this video for young kids, unless your child watches, and is used to, meanness and selfishness.

Great holiday movie for kids and adults

This review is from: Olive the Other Reindeer (DVD) I saw this movie about 7 years ago, and for some reason, waited that long to purchase it. It was exactly like I remember; a story about an upbeat Dog (possibly a reindeer, voiced by Drew Barrymore) who is trying to save Christmas. Along to help her is a penguin scam artist. The movie is great for kids, and I enjoyed it as an adult. It is a little kiddish because there are 3-4 musical numbers throughout the movie, but there are also some jokes in there that only adults would understand. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a movie the entire family can enjoy.

This film is bad

I saw this on TV last year, and wish that I hadn't. Despite the amount oftalent that was involved, this turned out to be a very disturbing holidayexperience. (What could Billy West and Matt Groening have been thinking, they drive two of the greatest animated shows ever!) The only saving gracewas Martini the penguin; for some reason he just made me laugh. Apart fromthat, Drew Barrymore should be banned from any acting for at least 2 yearsbecause of this travesty, and the writer publicly flogged. Watch it onlytomock the sheer hideousness and all those involved.

olive the other reindeer

This movie is one of the cutest Christmas movies I've seen. Olive never stops believing in herself and has plenty of Christmas cheer!

PhinePhriend 2012-05-11 04:03:38

In a word, marvelous.

This show was absolutely hilarious. I sat there, watching it, laughing myrear off every three seconds. I regretted not recording it when it was onFox. I can't even tell you how hilarious it was. Does it have schmaltz, you ask? that terrible plot ploy that has made several family films intoabsolute terrors to watch? Heck no! It's simply a funny, adroit film thatshould be on everyone's shelf. Watch it. 'Nuf said.

Fun for kids and adults

This tale of a Christmas-loving dog who tries to help Santa make his deliveries is both cute and innocent enough for young kids and hip enough for their Gen X parents. For example there's a great line that parodies the "you're no Jack Kennedy" remark Lloyd Bentsen made to Dan Quayle in the 1988 VP debates. That's going to go over the head of any kid, but they'll be wondering why Mommy and Daddy think it's so funny. And that's not the only joke snuck in for the grown ups. With a larcenous penguin as a companion, Olive meets interesting and interestingly-named characters as she heads to the North Pole to save Christmas. This special truly deserved its Emmy nomination and will entertain both you and your kids.A last bit of trivia: When Drew Barrymore (the voice of Olive) was in Woody Allen's musical, "Everyone Says I Love You", she was the only star in it who was able to convince Woody her singing was so bad that she should have a voice double for her songs. That should make it all the more interesting when you get to hear Drew sing in "Olive, The Other Reindeer".

We loved the book and the video is even better and we are big fans of drew barrymore

Soon to be Christmas Classic

The animation in "Olive, the Other Reindeer" is truly impressive. Theunique style of J. Otto Seibold has been captured in a most beautiful waybythe animators at DNA Productions in Dallas. Most people don't realisethat"Olive" is a three dimensional animated special, yet it manages to carrythe traditional charm and warmth of any classic 2D holiday cartoon.

love it

This review is from: Olive the Other Reindeer (DVD) This movie is one of my Christmas faves....it is a bit strange, but fun and full of humor most kids would miss. Pretty entertaining for adults and I am guessing kids will enjoy it too...although I don't have any!

The BEST holiday cartoon ever

Unlike the decidedly negative message of "Rudolph" (that is, unless you bow to the will of the crowd, you'll be scorned), this movie is all about embracing and celebrating difference. It is GREAT for kids-- and is just fantastically done. This is my very favorite of ALL of the holiday shorts. I think you'll like it too! :-)
