Of Mice and Men

Based on John Steinbecks 1937 classic tale of two travelling companions, George and Lennie, who wander the country during the Depression, dreaming of a better life for themselves. Then, just as heaven is within their grasp, it is inevitably yanked away. The film follows Steinbecks novel closely, exploring questions of strength, weakness, usefulness, reality and utopia, bringing Steinbecks California vividly to life.

Mice and Men Review

Gary Sinise and John play very convincing roles. Both work as day laborers who wander from town to town. Lenny is retarded but incredibly strong. Sinise serves as his protector. The movie takes place in the thirties at the height of the depression. The scene props used were very convincing. Excellent movie!!!

A great movie.

This movie was extremely well-done. It actually is better than the book! A great movie to see. I have one big complaint about this movie, however, and that was the climax. I will not give it away, but the problem was that it seemed very rushed. In the book, the climax was a long scene, and you knew what George was going to do before it happened. In the movie, the view is from far away, and you have no idea what's going to happen, until it actually does, leaving you completely surprised. I would have rather had more suspense like it was in the book during that climax. Not just a surprise. Besides that, though, the movie was great.

A very bad language movie

This review is from: Of Mice & Men [VHS] (VHS Tape) This movie states on the box that is is PG13 because of violence...It should state because of bad, bad language. It repeatedly used the name of God's Son, Jesus, my Savior, in a vain and bad way. Reguardless of what we paid for it, we tossed it in the garbage where it belongs. The movie plot got no where...taught no moral lessons ...encouraged no one. The retarded man was shot by his own friend in the end. Bad, Bad movie...don't buy it!

And I get to tend the rabbits-

Wow. What an excellent movie. I can honestly say that this is the only moviethat can make me roll a tear. It is a tragedy and a beauty. It is one of thesaddest movie ever made, yet one of the most beautiful at that. This moviehas many points, but to me it is about a relationship and friendship betweentwo men that cannot be severed by man nor God. This is one of my favoritemovies. This is possibly Gary Sinise's best performance (if not this, than ForrestGump by a short margin), and he was hardly recognized for it! He was GeorgeMilton dammit, not Gary Sinise playing George Milton. I am always angry whengreat performances are overlooked, even when I don't like the movie, butthat is not the case here. I loved this movie. John Malkovich has nevershined brighter than here as Lennie Small. He is mentally challenged, so hecan't see what he does, he only knows that George is gonna get mad.One of the most heartbreaking scenes in this movie is when Lennie kills hispuppy. I was so sad. This is one of the most powerful and visually stunningmovies I've ever seen. The acting was outstanding, the scenery wasmagnificent, and the story is one of the greatest ever. I think that anyonewho enjoys a great tearjerker should look no further, because this ispossibly the best! 10/10

The greatest!

I love this movie. John Malkovich and Gary Sinise are great as Lenny and George. It's just as good as the book!

Pity they killed the best actress so early on.

I would have written her in the story some more, it would have gotten ahigher rating. I will always remember this as the first movie I walkedout on before it was over. That idiot freak kills the one girl(Sherilyn Fenn) that doesn't deserve it, and that was it for me. Turnedme down so much that I couldn't bring myself to be interested in therest of the story. The two are not the actors (or characters) one cansympathize with. So drunken men cause a lot of mischief, accidentshappen, retards are stupid, and brother has problems dealing with hisdifficult relative. Hope does not make it better. Oh, and: yeah, reality pretty much stinks. Tell us something we don't already know.It was years later when I finally saw the rest of the movie on TV, outof boredom mostly, only to discover I was right about my predictions onhow the rest of the story would be. Nothing surprising, nothingexciting, just wasted minutes I should have spent sleeping.

An emotional up lifting Story

This movie is one of the best movies I have had the pleasure of watching in years and I love the book. Gary Sinise does an exalent job making the film and keeping it as close to the book as possible which is something not many can and will do. This movie remindes me of me and my brother and how we were as younger kids. Its one of those movies that makes you appreciate your older or younger siblings no matter how much you may hate or love eachother. Anyone who has a heart and loves a good movie that will make you cry every once in a while this is it. I give it a 5 but Id give it a 10 if I could so dont pass this one up because its well worth it.

Who Could Ask for More?

107 5-star reviewers can't be wrong, but I felt COMPELLED to review this movie too. I teach high school English and show it to my 10th grade class every year. In fact, they are watching it right now. Not one of them is asleep, lying on the floor, asking to go to the bathroom .... nothing. They love it. Yesterday I heard them discussing it in the hall as they were walking from class to class. Most of the time they talk about how the characters are shallow compared to the ones they have created in their heads while reading the book. Not with this movie. If you have never seen it, you have to. If you teach the book, show the movie. Your students will never forget it.

The Gentle Giant

Halfway into the movie, you will ask yourself, "Where have I seen this theme?" and you should answer, "Slingblade". Both contain little boys stuck in men's bodies that, while they purposely wouldn't hurt a mouse or a child, they can unwittingly unlease a fury to protect someone they love. This is one of those movies, where you root for a happy ending but know how it's going to turn out. Mostly all the characters seemed believable except the the boss' son and his wife and the black hired hand. They seem only to exist to cause the emotional tension in the movie.Everyone else gave dignified performances that you identified with. I agree with another reviewer that Ray Walston's character was heartbreaking.John Malkovich joins a long line of actors that play simpletons: Dustin Hoffman- Rainman, Tom Hanks- Forrest Gump, Billy Bob Thornton- Slingblade, Michael Duncan Clarke- The Green Mile. Their performances are so poignant because one gets occassionally tired of cynical, sarcastic people and we love to see the world through the eyes of people who see it simply without its complications.Gary Sinise is completely believable as a field hands who has his own dreams but chooses to delay them to take care of someone that he considers, on a certain level, to be a friend.Credit also needs to go to the supporting cast who provide the support the main actors need.I appreciated the subtlety in the scenes. Too many movies are too graphic and not suitable for family viewing. The PG-13 rating was a plus.Although depressing and disturbing, it is a must see because it is memorable.

One of My Favourate Movies

I bought this movie on DVD recently, purely because I felt that OM&M isa story I should, as a man of culture (ha!) be familiar with.Well, I'm so glad that I made the investment. From the moment I pressedplay on the DVD player, I knew this was a quality piece of film. The film has a beautifully composed soundtrack and is visually verybeautiful but what makes it so absolutely fab is, in my opinion, thechemistry between the two lead parts.Malkovich is one of my top 3 favourite actors and he gives this role110% Some people on here have suggested that his portrayal is over thetop but I found it nothing short of convincing. The story is a classic yarn which has everything... I laughed at thebanter between George and Lennie; I cheered when Lennie 'taught' thevile Curly a lesson and even shed a tear at the ending.Best of all, this is one of those movies that, in many ways, beginsafter it ends. What I mean by that is - just after you've slipped the DVD back in it'scase you will start thinking about it. There's a LOT of depth in thatmovie and a lot to think about! That, for me, is the hallmark of aclassic.Watch this movie! Pure entertainment...

Amazing movie adaptation of a great book

Often a movie is associated with its actors or its director. I wouldassociate this film more with Horton Foote the brilliant scriptwriter, who sculpted the script from a great book by a formidable author, JohnSteinbeck. When I read Steinbeck's book I was in awe of the author's powerfulstrokes of simplicity. Adapting the book into a screenplay can beformidable. Foote did it earlier with Harper Lee's novel "To kill aMockingbird". He did it again in Beresford's "Tender Mercies". Some ofthe flashes of brilliance in the script are the opening sequence of thewoman running scared into the camera, the opening and closing images oflight falling on the dark insides of a train car, the empty bus ridethat Steinbeck did not present. Director Gary Sinise and Foote made theadaptation of the novel on screen look easier by adding details just asscriptwriter Robert Bolt and director David Lean did the opposite bycompressing the details with Pasternak's "Doctor Zhivago". Both "DrZhivago" and "Of Mice and Men" are great examples of adapting literaryworks for the screen. This is not to discount the contribution of Gary Sinise. DirectorSinise and Actor Sinise were admirable. The former brought out thefinest in the latter. This is Sinise's finest performance.Malkovich is a talented actor--he commands attention. Whether a morerestrained performance was called for or not is debatable.Equally stunning is the film's music by Mark Isham--the man who grabbedmy attention in "Never Cry Wolf", "Mrs Soffel" and "A Midnight Clear".Sinise was wise using the music effectively when required and notoverdoing it to evoke pathos. The music doesn't sooth you, it nudgesyou to reflect on life. The film is a great essay on loneliness. Most importantly, it is agreat example of how a literary work ought to be adapted withoutchanging the author's vision. Remarkably, the film added more toSteinbeck's work with the train ride and the bus ride. That's Foote!

Should be shown in EVERY h.s. lit class

If ever a movie lived up to a standard of literature for the contemporaryAmerican art form, this is it.When you watch this you'll be stunned at how easy it should be to adapt anovel .. but it's seldom done right. You'll NEVER find a truer adaptation than this.. in fact you'll swear it'snot "adapted" at all.Everyone else in this group has already given the accolades. I secondthem.

An Amazing Work

I just happened to catch this film on television and was of the mistaken impression that it would be just another version of the same old Steinbeck story, but Malkovich is utterly convincing as Lenny and Gary Sinise is powerfully compelling as George. A wonderful supporting cast and beautiful cinematography. I was even more amazed to discover that this film was directed by Sinise, whose talents are certainly underrated. This version is probably even better than Steinbeck's novel, although it may seem sacreligious to say it. Not to be missed under any circumstances.

A FANTASTIC movie

John Malcovich who plays Lenny should have gotten and Academy Award for this one. By the end of this movie you will be shedding tears, even for you ones who hardly ever do. A great adaption from the classic novel. This is a MUST SEE END

Fabulous!

This movie was excellent, although it was a little painful to watch...sometimes that what it needs to be. The movie shows what the reality of life is like and how cruel some ppl are and how some ppl only think of themselves and not others! This movie was great and everyone needs to see it.

Incredible....and Malkovich was PERFECT

A wonderful adaptation of Steinbeck's classic. Gary Sinese is wonderful asGeorge and as director of the film. John Malkovich, who is one of myfavorite actors, never lets me down. People complain about his portrayal ofLennie, because he makes Lennie seem like a person with down syndrome? Whatdo you expect him to do? Bang his hand against his chest while letting histongue to hang out? To me, Malkovich WAS Lennie. Everything about this filmwas perfect. All the actors were magnificent. Kudos to Sinese for direction, and of course Malkovich for his superb acting.10/10

Disappointing adaptation/remake of a remarkable story

I would not recommend to anyone to watch any version of this film prior toreading the remarkable book, but the 1939 Lewis Milestone version, which wasbased upon the stageplay based upon the novel, stands alone as a wonderfulwork of drama. This 1992 version, however - based directly upon the noveland directed by Gary Sinise - simply isn't worth it considering thecompetition. Forced performances, laughable miscasting, and an unneededreworking of Steinbeck's orginal dialogue leave much to be desired. Onemight manage to get a good chuckle out of the ridulously obvious paddingbeneath Malkovich's clothes (especially the shoulder-pads) in a patheticattempt to make him appear much larger than he really is, but that would bea high point. Normally I am quite fond of most of this cast, but RayWalston's Candy cannot hold a candle to the passionate performance ofveteran stage actor Roman Bohnen's take on the character in the 1939version, especially in his pivotal scene concerning his ailing old dog (nospoilers here - check it out for yourself!)I haven't been so disappointed in a film I'd expected to be fantastic in along, long time. Worth the comparison if you happen to beSteinbeck-obsessed like myself, but otherwise choose the Milestonerendition. Burgess and Chaney Jr. will NOT disappoint like this misguidedgentlemen in their undoubtedly good-hearted attempt to update a classic. (And still - read the novel first and foremost!)

Disappointed

It would have been helpful if a clear explanation before purchasing was given that Region 2 means it can only be used in Australia. I"m not in Australia. Wasted my money.

Michael 2012-05-11 10:46:02

John Malkovich is Lenny!

This is a timeless story that keeps us connected with the climate of thedepression. Better still it is a character study of Lenny and George. JohnMalkovich will not be outdone in his portrayal of Lenny. If you have readthis and/or seen earlier productions of this story you will not bedisappointed.
