Danny Ocean is a thief who has just been paroled from prison. He seeks out his partner, Rusty and he has a job. And it is to rob the vault that houses the cash of three casinos in Las Vegas. And he plans to rob it on a night when 150 million is in it. So they recruit nine guys and they begin to put Oceans plan in motion. Everything is going well until Rusty discovers that Oceans ex-wife, Tess is the main squeeze of Terry Benedict the (ruthless) owner of the casinos. Rusty asks him what is he going to do if he has to choose. But Ocean says that if his plan goes smoothly, he is going to be able to have his cake and eat it.
I saw this last Tuesday, and here's what I have to say. It was a neat movie, with a lot of nifty little gimmicks and twists (or not-so-twists) and whatis most definitely THE all-star cast of all time. Clooney and his gang arefunny at times, and mostly intriguing throughout. The story is neat, theactors are convincing. and Julia Roberts - What was with her lip?Argh!Anyway, a good movie. Not on my top ten, but still worth aviewing.
This lighthearted romp of a caper movie is a remake of the successful 1960s film staring Frank Sinatra and the rest of the Las Vegas Rat Pack. The title refers to the name of the lead character, Danny Ocean, played by George Clooney, who assembles a team of 11 men to steal $180 million from a casino. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, the film is a slick spoof all the way, the high profile cast being the glue that holds this film together. There's Brad Pitt and Matt Damon and Julia Roberts and Andy Garcia and Elliott Gould and Carl Reiner. And there was no expense spared on the wardrobe or the glittery sets or the use of modern high tech special effects. Forget about the story; it's not supposed to be real. But yet there's fast paced action and tension throughout as the cast deals with setbacks and complications leading up to and including the caper. It's fun all the way. Just relax and don't take it seriously.
...and if that something is your love, you do whatever it takesto have it.You even rob a well secured casino. It is a good movie, nice casting, niceplot, some funny parts too. Still, there are many unexplained things whichin real life wouldn't happen...
It's clear that Soderbergh knows this is a movie about two things: star power and plot twists
Ocean's 11 was a very excellent film! This movie has all the ingredients such as comedy, suspense, and action! Mainly I went to see this movie because of Mr. Pitt. But during the movie, I found myself amazed at how good Pitt and Clooney acted as a team. If you have seen this movie, you have to watch every thing or you are liable to miss something. Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, and the others gave stellar performances in this classy, entertaining work. It's really ashame Hollywood doesn't produce more entertainig films like this . If you haven't seen this movie, I've got three words to say: GO SEE IT! Trust me you won't regret it!
Having never seen the original "Ocean's Eleven" and considering myselflucky, I was a bit skeptical when I heard that Soderbergh was remaking thisRat Pack hack. But Soderbergh breathes life into the heist movie genre andcreates a complex and enjoyable tour de force. Since there are at leasteleven characters that need to be introduced, each character is given hismini-moment scene to steal. Elliot Gould is a hoot as Ruben Tischkoff andhis shameless hairiness is almost as difficult to watch as a Rupert Pupkinfilm festival. George Clooney's Danny Ocean is slick, smart and a littledangerous, a part he can play blindfolded, let's face it. But he can stillcommand the screen and there aren't too many actors that can do that thesedays. Brad Pitt is a pretty boy, no doubt about that. But he gives a cool(if not fattening - eating in every scene.) performance. Don Cheadle, asRoscoe Means, covers his privates as he detonates a transformer that blowsthe lights in Vegas. Whether or not that was a bit of actorly improvisationor it was written into the script, doesn't matter much. It was a stroke ofgenius. Matt Damon, looking rather Ripleyesque, holds his own with theseSoderbergh regulars. Bernie Mack shows a good deal of range for a stand-upcomic. Casey Affleck (brother of Ben) and Scott Caan (son of James) are dumband dumber as brothers who drive the truck, kind of. The one weakness inthis frat pack flick was Julia Roberts. Unfortunately, there was not muchchemistry between her and Clooney. Just watch "Out of Sight" if you want amovie definition of "chemistry." The sparks between J-Lo and Clooney flyoff the screen. But for all their off-screen comraderie, (in endlessinterviews) Roberts and Clooney seemed more like siblings than ex-lovers. Soderbergh, behind the camera as well as directing, has developed asignature look to his films. His humor and his sensibility make aninteresting combination. The scene with "That Seventies Show" Topher Graceand "Dawson's Creek's" Joshua Jackson playing with the big boys iswonderfully loopy. "Ocean's Eleven" is one remake that makes the originalpale by comparison.
This film was totally flat. The plot was there, the acting tried hard, but in the end, it was a bunch of supposedly cool people trying toohard to act cool. And it sucked. Another clock-watcher. 7/10 Forthe cinematography and the music, and pieces of well-structureddialogue, though their execution was taxing, and the jokes werevoid.
I did like this movie but it's not the best I've seen. I like the way thescript was written though, and the roles. These people seem so confidentthat you can't seem to stop watching. You wonder and say it's impossible topull such a crime. There was only standing room in the theater when I went, and everyone just screamed everytime someone almost slipped up. It wasentertaining. But on the plot itself, it was just kinda everyday ordinary. But the plotisthe most important part, isn't it?
I thought this movie was a good heist film. I had to see it first of allbecause Brad Pitt was in it and ever since "Fight Club" he has been one ofmy favorite actors. The first time I saw it I actually didn't like it thatmuch, because I expected more. Although after I saw it a few times, Ithought this movie isn't bad at all. It was kind of strange. Anyway, Ilikedthe theme and setting of the movie and how it was taken place throught LasVegas. Then when they pull their carefully planned heist, there are a lotofthings done that actually seem like could have pulled off in a casino, whereas the movie claims is the most impossible place to rob. A good movie, andworth watching. Oh yeah Brad Pitt eats continously throughout the movie.Itis a bit silly.
Well who of us can say they are the supercool Clooney, who not once but twice walks free in a tux. This 'rat pack' style high speed casino heist is a roller coster plot, leaving you hung out in the open till the very end. Co-starring a swave Pitt. as his right hand man there seems there is nothing these two can't steal even a womans heart. This is definatly a must have for your collection!
How can a movie that cost so much money and included so many stars be sodisappointing?Although the movie is not entirely bad and would make a nice viewing athomeon a rainy Sunday afternoon, after so much hype it should have deliveredmuch, much more than it did.On the down side, the movie took almost an hour to get going, almost makingme lose interest completely. Then, yes, the actual robbery was cleverlyworked out and quite cool. But what is it with this Hollywood need toinclude some love interest and happy romantic endings? This is a film that had great potential, but ended up being no more than"good guys outwit bad guy" plus "good guy gets the girl".On the plus side, Andy Garcia was great, the only character you couldreallyside with, as was Elliot Gould who stole the show every second he was onscreen. All in all, not as entertaining as it was hyped to be.
Oceans 11 viewed via large projection TV, using full screen DVD excellent color and detail. Brad Pitt may remind some of Steve McQueen in this part, with nearly everyone cast well. Screenwriting excellent, great visuals of Las Vegas. (100 times better than HEIST which ended up slickness w.o. substance despite the (normally) brilliant David Mamet writing HEIST)Oceans 11 a truely fun and entertaining movie, with an DVD commentary available (also a directors's commentary) by the trio of Brad Pitt. Matt Damon, and Andy Garcia. I would suggest all listen to these guys, and at one point they get so engrossed in the movie, they forget to narrate for a bit of time Have seen original Oceans 11, also a good (but less fast moving) movie for its era, well done, however, this new version tops it by far.Andy Garcia was absolutely convincing in his part, exceptional well cast. Only problem I had with the movie was Julia Roberts as Garcia's flame (and Clooneys ex-wife). She is no doubt near the top in terms of actresses, however to me she lacks the sex appeal necessary to convince me someone like "Terry Benedict" (Andy Garcia) a casino mogul worth 750 million dollars would get all that excited about. Would have been more convincing to use an elegant mid-20's shapley, long legged and sophisticated blonde - i.e. a woman unquestionably capable of taking the average man's breath away. Julia Robert aside from being Julia Roberts - can she really do that?Wonderful movie overall
For me Oceans eleven (there is some spoiler info below) epitomizes myreaction to many modern movies with good directing, good acting, butsub par writing. Either the original was inherently difficult to adaptor it was simply poorly done, because the dialogue is sparse andcliché'd at points. At times they sound like a Dr. Evil parodyastounded by the possibility for '1 million' dollars. Pitt is good, asis clooney (although he still hasn't achieved his potential with areally good movie), but Andy Garcia is way too one dimensional and it'snot believable that julila roberts would date him, even it just for themoney & lifestyle. And even the dimension Garcia has ( the nobody'sfool anal tough guy) turns out not to be true, as he lets clooney offeasy after it should be clear he is implicated in the heist. Andspeaking of overdone, don't get me started on the chief financercharacter. Ocean's eleven attempts to ooze coolness like pulp fiction, but the script just doesn't back it up.
Ocean's Eleven is a boring, smug, lifeless film. The real shame is that itcould have been oh so much better. All the elements of a great film arethere: intriguing premise, incredible cast, and an Oscar winning, stylisticdirector. So what went wrong? The premise really is never interesting asit seems. The heist goes off so smoothly that the film never builds anytension whatsoever. The bad guys are never as bad as they are made out tobe and stealing from Vegas seems to be as easy as taking candy from a baby. The cast is all star, however they have all been better elsewhere or theyaren't given much to do. Clooney has played this role before in Out ofSight (a much better Soderberg film). Brad Pitt is cool but he never addsmuch to the film other than a handsome set piece. Andy Garcia is the muchfeared baddie who does nothing but turn the other cheek when his fortune isbeing robbed. Don Cheadle, Bernie Mac, Carl Reiner, and Elliot Gould arewoefully misused as set dressing rather than full fledged characters. Thefilm would have been much better had it focused on these characters ratherthan Clooney and Pitt. Julia Roberts' skeleton has a mere cameo role andreally adds nothing to the picture. That said, Ocean's Eleven is not a badfilm. It has a few moments of genuine cleverness and a couple of chuckles. But it could have been so much better. Mamet's Heist, Richie's Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, and Soderberg's own Out of Sight are much better atthe robbery game. I really hope this is a minor stumble in the career ofSoderberg and it isn't the Oscar curse that is overtaking him. We shallsee.
Although George Clooney always seems to play some deviation of the samecharacter, his movies tend to surprise me.Ocean's 11 is nothing new. Not even close. Not only a remake, but the samerehash of plots from SNEAKERS to ENTRAPMENT to even SUGAR & SPICE. In otherwords, if you are looking for fresh air from a movie, this is not yourticket. If you are looking for some nice, sleek entertainment boxed in the nowtypical two hour formula, then Ocean's 11 might be for you. Clooney is,well, the same Clooney as he always is, but does a nice job with it. He andBrad Pitt do a decent job of playing "The Buddies Setting Up The Heist"routine and the other cast members range from good to adequate. It's just astory, that's all it is. It is not a classic, but it is something that youcan sit a watch and not feel like you wasted your time at the end - As longas you do not go in looking for trend setter. If you are really hankering for an ensemble cast crime drama, try any of THEGODFATHER('s), BEAT THE DEVIL, TOUCH OF EVIL, THE USUALSUSPECTS.7/10 - Just entertainment.
I went into this movie not expecting much but I was wonderfully surprised. The acting was great especially George Clooney and Brad Pitt. I wassurprised at how many great actors were cast and they were all perfect fortheir parts. This movie kept my attention the entire time and I didn'tlookat my watch once. The plot was interesting but what was really great wasthecomedy. I would recommend this movie to anyone, as I have been ever sinceIsaw it. Vanilla Sky does not even compare.
Finally, a movie in which no guts splatter, no bullets hail, and no effectsare special.About the kind of crime in which guile, not guns, are the prime weapon,Ocean's Eleven is a very refreshing movie.George Clooney plays Danny Ocean, a career criminal who, no sooner thangetting out of jail, begins working on the next big heist. With the help ofcardsharking buddy Dusty Ryan, played by Brad Pitt, they assemble a crew ofassorted specialists, otherwise known as Ocean's Eleven.Their goal is to break into the vault that holds the cash for three LasVegas casinos. On a fight night, we are informed, at least $160 million isin that vault. Of course, pulling off the crime won't be easy. There's also a certain fearfactor, in that the casinos are owned by Terrence Benedict, played by AndyGarcia. Cold and calculating, Benedict is also very ruthless -- the kind ofguy who would make jail time the least of the worries.Nonetheless, he's made enemies who would love to exact revenge. One of themis rival casino owner Reuben Tishkoff, played by Elliott Gould, who agreesto finance the scheme after Benedict forced him out of the business.,Another is Ocean himself. The payoff is great, but most of all, Ocean wantsto get back at Benedict for stealing his lovely wife away, played by JuliaRoberts.Ocean's Eleven is a remake of a 1960s movie of the same name that starredRat Packers Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr. I never saw theoriginal, but one movie Ocean's Eleven reminds me of is The Sting. The Sting remains the more clever of the two, and features catchier music, but all the elements are there. Set Ocean's Eleven in the depression era,and Clooney and Pitt could easily be mistaken for Redford and Newman, andGarcia for Robert Mitchum.Unfortunately, vagaries of the script severely limit Roberts' screen time. And a sequence in which a scientific gizmo is stolen and used to force anelectrical blackout was a little contrived. But on the plus side, the dreaded pitfall of reducing the supportingcharacters into a pack of stock whacko goofballs is avoided. The crewmembers can be a little odd at times, but in an endearing rather than anannoying way. Clooney and Pitt, meanwhile, pull out all the rakish stops -- these twowould be selling sand to Saharans if they weren't making so much money inmovies. Most of all, however, the story is just plain entertaining. Just when youthink you know how they get the money out, a new level of illusion unfoldsbefore your very eyes. Maybe the appeal has something to do with thecriminal in me, but I also think that our even friends in the red sergewould appreciate this movie for what it is.
This is one of those films that is just entertaining. It's not deep. It'snot serious. But it's a good time when you're watchingit.Yes, it's a heist movie. However, it's pretty slick and the characters arepretty "cool". One of the first scenes with a bunch of young adults playingpoker with the veteran con men is quite funny to watch. "Look at theseboys... all red!" one of the young kids says as he puts down an eclecticpoker hand of hearts and diamonds. Brad Pitt's character is the veteranteaching them and describes it as one of the longest hours of his life. This pretty much sets the tone for the whole film. This film is basically a comedy, but it's slick and wry comedy. Lots ofgood lines delivered the way they need to be delivered: quickly. I reallyliked this one.
A Great Movie to see, but with such a cast, it could've been better. However, the music and dialogues are all great, and George Clooney acts hisrole very well.... i rest my case
I can confidently say that "Ocean's Eleven" is one of my favorite moviesofthe year. This movie's heist and suspense made it a gem of 2001. Thehumorwas at an appropriate level for this film and was done with skill andsuccess. The great acting by Cloony, Pitt, and Garcia is a thing toremember. But this movie did have its flaws, the major one being JuliaRoberts. I give a lot of credit to Julia Roberts for "Erin Brockovich"and"Pretty Woman", but she is a hit-and-miss actress, and she scored a bigmissin "Ocean's." Her presence in every scene was a unwanted one, not becausethe character was bad, but that she wasn't at her "Erin" best. Therelationship between George and Julia also added to the problem. The onething I could not see between them is the spark. That is what makes agreatonscreen relationship, i.e. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in "Sleepless inSeattle". Cloony and Roberts do not belong together and this was nottheirmistake, but their director's. I have given credit to Steven Soderberghonhis past two movies "Traffic" and "Erin Brockovich" for the great castingand the superb acting. But his remake of "Ocean's Eleven" lacked thosetowelements in Roberts and her performance with Cloony. Even though this wasan unnecessary element to an already full to capacity film, "Ocean'sEleven"still turns out to be one of my favorite movies of this lack-luster year.It is one of my FAVORITE, but certainly not the BEST.
