Greatness

It's sad that this film got a bum rap, I love this movie! Great cast, great writing, and the great Eddie Murphy!

I found it funny anyway

It may be uneasy viewing when you're wrestling with the issues it'smaking you laugh at. But as a film it's funny with characters straightout of a comic book. It's this that saves it. The characters are sounbelievable, over the top and outrageous that you see them as cartoonsrather than people. The dialogue is delivered with zest and the paceseems quite frantic at times which all helps. I laughed out loud a lot.Is that right? The digs at obesity didn't seem personal. The humour isat playground level which gives you an idea of how to enjoy this film.Some sharp and witty dialogue too when not delivered at 100mph. Justview it for what it is, a comedy pure and simple.

Even though it had some potential, it failed miserably

A mild-mannered guy (Murphy) who is married to a monstrous woman(Murphy) meets the woman of his dreams (Newton), and schemes to find away to be with her.Norbit was a real letdown. It had some potential, but it just didn'twork. Murphy having three roles actually was a good idea. His threecharacters are kind of funny sometimes, and while some parts are funny,many others aren't. The romance isn't actually believable between himand the "woman of his dreams". Rasputia is an okay joke-maker, but herfat jokes and such get a little old throughout the movie.Norbit got off to a good start, funny, like I expected, but as themovie progressed, the same old jokes about his crazy wife became veryrepetitive. The character Norbit wasn't actually likable, even thoughthe movie tries to stress that he is a great guy, and just needs abreak. By the end of the movie, his character had not changed at all,and was still annoying and we didn't really care what happened to him.I know this is just a silly comedy, and I tried to remember that, butit was just impossible for me while watching.Well, now that we've got the bad things out of the way, we can nowfocus on the good. While the script didn't really work out that well,you can tell the cast did their best to make it work. Eddie Murphy doesgood as Rasputia and the owner of the orphanage, putting in funny andgood performances (even though his character of Norbit wasn't good).Newton was likable, but the chemistry with Murphy didn't really work.A very cliché and tedious watch for the most part, so avoid this unlessyou are very bored and you don't have to pay for it.3/10

thandiwe saves the day

despite the critics i loved this film.i wish clean flicks was still around to edit out the senseless don imus humor of the two pimps(eddie griffin and scat williams) and the crude banter of shawn wayans. with them removed this is the cute family film its trailer advertised.what saves the movie is the cute portralal of kate(thandie newton-real first name thandiwe).rare these days do we see a portrayal of the really good girl as kate is.the romance between kate and norbit is what makes the movie great. omitting the cruity we have a 5 star film. in real relationships of the abusive wife and the henpecked husband. the abusive wife sees her husband as a 'norbit' type.the abused husband sees his wife as a 'rasputia' type. this extreme portrayal is what makes the movie fun.but once thandiwe appears the film becomes a beautiful innocent love story in ahumorous setting.in these days of relationships based on materialism and self-fulfillment, this is a welcome breath of fresh air in its innocence and sweetness. no one could play kate better than thandiwe. see the film as i see it and you'll love it. p.s. the oscars are a sham--eddie murphy should not be denied because the critics did not like this movie. why wasn't 'apocalypto' nominated for best picture.mccarthyism is back in hollywood as the powers that be have blacklisted mel gibson for not subscribing to their peer- pressure tactics!

Norbit

Shortly after this movie was released I started hearing notions & comments on entertainment websites & shows that this movie would prevent Eddie Murphy from winning the Oscar for his performance in DREAMGIRLS. I heard that this movie was crass, buffoonish, stupid, ignorant, mean-spirited, yadda..yadda..yadda so I avoided seeing it till recently.This is the first Eddie Murphy comedy that I've seen in a long time and I had no expectations about what I'd see but this was the most hilarious movie I've seen in quite a while. The makeup artist who transformed Eddie into Rasputia & Mr. Wong is to be commended as are the technical wizards who enabled us to see Norbit & Rasputia in the same scenes in a seamless manner. This is a basic story of a sad sack in Norbit who grows from an abandoned baby to the cuckolded husband of an overweight bully of a wife (both played by Murphy). Norbit's sad life is trucking along until he discovers his wife's infidelity and the return of his childhood sweetheart - these events make him realize that he wants & deserves true love & happiness.The supporting cast of Thandie Newton, Eddie Griffin, Kat Williams, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Terry Crews and Marlon Wayans as the "power tap guru" definitely worked well off of Eddie's "characters".Frankly, several members of my family have questioned my taste level after learning how much I enjoy this movie but I just tell them "different strokes for different folks" and keep it moving. This movie IS crude, rude & lewd but I found it funny as hell and crack up every time I think about certain scenes so to all who enjoyed it, HOW YOU DOIN'?!

It was the funniest movie ever I want to watch it over and over again. You have got to see this movie it is really fantastic. It came exactly 2 weeks after I had ordered it.

Tormented man

Eddie Murphy is a genius and he's believable as the obnoxious anddisgusting Rasputia and the geeky Steve Urkel(Family Matters)likeNorbit. You really think he is two different people. Norbit reminds mea lot of the character he played in the 1999 movie "Bowfinger". He'sdim-witted naive,wimpy,and a pushover. The morbid obese woman Rasputiais disgusting to look at and its hard to eat something while watchingthis movie. There also an somewhat all-star supporting cast like TerryCrews,Marlon Wayans,Katt Williams,Clifton Powell,Cuba Gooding Jr,andEddie Griffin. But these actors couldn't help this movie to become ablockbuster comedy. Thandie Newton also starred in the movie as Katethe childhood friend of Norbit of whom they both grew in love with eachother. Kate Thandie's character is the total opposite of Rasputia she'sslim,gentle,considerate,and diplomatic. The movie had some laughs butnot enough to keep the momentum going. As for poor Norbit thischaracter shows the exaggeration of some African-American womendominating their husbands.

MUST SEE!!!

This review is from: Norbit (Widescreen Edition) (DVD) This is one of Eddie Murphy's most hilarious performances. I can't imagine any reason why anyone would not like this movie. If you're into comedies or just want to laugh, then BUY THIS FILM!BTW-Sandler's last movie is a rip off of this movie.

Like in the Nutty Professor movies, Eddie Murphy plays multiple roles - three in this film - and actually does a fairly decent job of playing all of them though I would have liked to see a real woman play the role of Rasputia.There's lots of funny jokes in this film though there were a few unneeded ones. Still, overall, this was actually a pretty good movie, with lots of funny bits and parts. One I remember is when Rasputia gains a bit of weight so cannot fit in her car as well as she did before. Rather than admit she gained weight, she deludes herself in believing the rain made the car shrink, and her poor husband (Norbit) has no choice but to indulge her.

Nerdy guy DOES get the girl...

This movie is a Murpy classic. If you like the Nutty Professor or theKlumps, you'll love this movie. Like those two, he plays othercharacters besides himself showing off his many talents as amulti-faceted actor.I don't know which character is better, Rasputia (his girlfriend/ wife)Mr. Wong, or Norbit himself. They are all hilarious and will keep youlaughing most of the movie.At times you feel sorry for Norbit, he's not so attractive, nor is hisgirlfriend/wife Rasputia, and she treats him like crap.She and her 3 brothers are mean and bully him all the time. And sadly,that's part of the humor in this movie.Cuba Gooding Jr. is also in this movie and plays a rather differentcharacter than he does in most movies...he's one of the bad guys.How? You'll have to see for yourself, I don't want to spoil it forthose who haven't seen it yet.Don't listen to the critics...are they ever REALLY right? It's a matterof preference, but Norbit is awesome and a must see....

I have watched it everyday since I bought it!

No, its not for kids. It is for grown people like me who love crazy comedy. Eddie Murphy is hilarious playing characters we all know we have seen before, some in our own families!! Ha! Rasputia is the bomb with all of her hair styles, she is just as fine as she thinks she is (confident heavy woman) You go girl! She was mean, but she got hers in the end. Eddie won me over again with this one. And Marlon Wayans is GREAT! "I stepped in poop, better wipe it off! 1, 2, 3, 4!" I was laughing the whole movie!

Not one of Eddie's Best

Funny as hell

I watch this movie even when it comes on tv and I have it on DVD. I even went to go see this movie and my god it's so funny. Eddie Murphy is so talented. I love watching him play different characters. He's been doing it since Coming To America and he hasn't stopped since.

alright.. to begin with.. I have seen 95% of IMDb movies with a ratingabove 8. I have watched all English movies in IMDb top 250. having saidthat.. i make it clear that i do fit in the so called 'hollywood'culture... from loving 'no country for old men' to loving stalag 17.... OK..this movie norbit.. i watched the first time i dint like it.. iwatched it again on HBO..now there was somethin about it.. justsomethin i cant put in words.. damn.. i have watched this movie 100times now!! the comedy is hilarious! How YOU doin'? It's a funny line even if they did steal it from Joey from Friends.When I watch a comedy, the only requirement I have is that it be funny. That's it. I'm not one of those intellectual movie snobs who think only "comedies" like Dr. Strangelove is worthy of my time.The story of Norbit was a very interesting one that kept my attention the entire time; and it made me laugh. Therefore, Norbit is a success.The film is not perfect by any means. I question the casting choice of Thandie Newton, and you also can't help but see Eddie Murphy as recycling his past roles from The Nutty Professor. Murphy is coasting at this point in his career. Of course, he no longer has anything else to prove. He did enough good things in the 80s to last him a lifetime: although, I do wonder where that Eddie Murphy went.We can't discuss Norbit without discussing the thing that many find offensive: the portrayal of the overweight character as evil and the thin, "beautiful woman" as good. Well, it was Rasputia's attitude that made her the bad guy, not her size. But then, some people ask, why make her fat at all if it's only about her attitude. Well, it's simple; Rasputia uses her size to intimidate people. I find it very hard to believe that a tiny woman like say, Toni Braxton, could have instilled fear in those around her the way Rasputia did. And it's her meanness and ability to physically intimidate people that acts as the essential part of humor for her character and the film.I also have to give a shout out to Marlon Wayans. I had no idea he played Buster until the end credits. I'm starting to believe he is the most talented Wayans. He does comedy better than Damon, and he can do drama better than, well Damon.If the movie is a little too mean spirited for you, and you want to see the big girl get the guy rather than lose him, I recommend Shallow Hal.

Norbit isn't horrific, but far from good. As far from comedies go, thisone is below average. I think is getting harder to make comedies thesedays, because most of the really good stuff has been used.Granted, there a few moments in which the movie is funny, but they arefar off and not very frequent. Most of the time, the movie recycles therunning gag that there's a morbidly obese woman who happens to be needof some heavy anger management. Fat jokes may be funny, but not if youuse it so much that it makes me want to scream out loud for a newjoke(people in the theater started to stare at me after I did this).The story is probably what you expect of a comedy these days. Littleskinny guy with no backbone marries massive angry blob thats supposedto be a woman. But wait, skinny guy's old friend comes back to town,and he realizes he loves her more than his wife with folds! Thats aboutit. The plot is the average "guys gets girl" with a twist from a fatlady. There's even a "I'll pretend to hate you so you will leave mealone and not get hurt" part. In the movie's defense, a comedy is moreabout wild laughter than a epic story, so I'll stop pushing it.Some of the acting really started to eat away at my patience in thisflick. The way Norbit talks makes me want to punch him, it's thatannoying. I don't know how Eddie Murphey could act like that. I alsocan't grasp why Cuba Gooding Jr. was part of the movie too. The rest isas bloated and lifeless as a fat woman's many folds.Norbit is a movie where some will like it, but others will quickly growbored or it. I liked some parts, but the rest made me want to leave thetheater. If you must see it, go for a rental. You'll save some money.

Abuse is never funny

This is a really poor attempt at trying to make a very hurtful and painful subject matter funny. It doesn't matter who is being abused and subjegated, male or female, there is nothing funny about this. Shame on you Eddie for being insensitive enough to even think something like this would be humorous.

Great Eddy movie! One of his best!

When i read the critics reviews i concluded that there is a bigdifference in humor between countries. I and my girlfriend and sonfound this a great humoristic movie, and we watched it several times. Icould even be one of Eddys best movies...I also read that a lot of (black) people found it to be somewhat aracistic movie? It is probably a culture thing, because we couldn'tfind anything of that source in the whole movie. My girlfriend is blackherself, and she didn't feel offended, on the contrary! And most actorsare black themselves. And if the critics refere to the streotypesrather than the colour of the skin of the actors; what is wrong withstereotyping in a "Eddy movie"!!! Stereotyping is a tool that mostcomedians use.U should critic this movie as a comedy and not as a serious moviebecause it is a comedy!!!

Weel, Eddie Murphy is a genius in playing few rolls in the same movie. Especially with a fat siut on. Altough the film had some good moments, it wasn't as funny as i fought it would be. But for Eddie's hard work Norbit deserves those 3 stars. Oh, and one last thing. I would really apreciate if someone from the managment would write what the special features have to offer. Extremely funny movie but something more

First of all, this movie is a comedy. And as a such, it's veryhilarious. It's not a racist at all. It's inspiring. Because under thelaughing surface, there is a love story. It's about power of love andwhat love makes with you. And for that it's very important for it tohas a happy ending. Some people would say it's very offensive, racist,a crap. Some other guys will say it has funny moments and is worthwatching (but with your heart, not with your moral, censor brain -that's from me). And I'm now saying this one is of greatest kind ofcomedies where besides the splendid funny, entertainment part, there isa real love story. An inspiring one. You need no relaxation techniquesor meditation, but just this movie to feel how much love you haveinside. Thank you so so much, Eddie. You're the man that I'm in lovetonight.
