for the people who keep saying it's just a copycat... Do you know howhard it is nowadays to come up with a whole-new-fresh-idea?it could be a copycat but it's way too good for that...possibly just anidea that matched another somehow cause we don't just consume oils andearth resources also ideas and as will noticed in recent years there'sbeen a lot of movies, anime, and programs remade or contain the samecontents everything became predictable and easy to spot.i watched karate kid when i was little can't remember the details butit is( as far as i remember) no way as near as motivative as this andbesides that the main character life is a lot similar to mine that iliked this movie the acting is very "nicely done" and well taken oncamera you can actually feel how the character takes the punch and thesoundtrack is just perfectly fixed where each song should be(Spoiler) yeah and my Gym trainer never told me about the "breathing"now that i know i train more without getting "winded" 10/10 for thatand to sum it up it's my favorite movie bought the DVD after i saw iton TV and it's all worth it If you get to watch it do it you won'tregret it
This movie had some great MMA fight scenes. Some of the personal themes were like Karate Kid and Rocky, but besides that it was good and intense. The antagonist is awesome, you want to really hate him. He is James (CAM)from Twilight and he has a black belt in Krav Maga.
we've reached a point where everything is a cliché... so it just drivesme nuts when detractors harp on cliché this cliché that, the movie washorrible. The fact is, Never Back Down is FAR FROM a horrible movie.You won't be blown away by the lead... You won't be surprised with anunbelievable plot twist... but still, there are many redeemingqualities here. The direction and the music are quite sharp. A welldefined climax, and some help from some fine acting in the supportingroles... Djimon is good and the mother is also quite good. I also likedhow they postponed the fact that the lead had felt a sense ofresponsibility for his fathers death and the circumstances behind it.This film looks good...sounds good... it's entertaining, and despitesome VERY familiar moments, Never Back Down delivers. You could do alot worse with the whole teeny bopper OC genre. I was stuck between 6and 7 but the undeserved rating here pushed me to the latter.65/100 I might even wanna check it out again before I return it.... andtake a peak at the name of the director.
Okay...so, to be fair? The person reviewing this movie just so happens to be a 19 year old girl. But, with that being said, I am entitled to a cheese ball, popcorn flick every now and then. Just like everyone else. While this film didn't offer cinematic quality that of Fight Club (But, to be fair...what film can?), I found myself sucked in none the less. Figure that. And, no, the "Beautiful People" with white teeth and rippling abs had nothing do to with it...although it didn`t hurt. It was the adrenaline fueled action sequences that got me. (Thanks to Dish Network for airing it on Encore Action at 12 AM.) I feel like a true dork for admitting this...but I loved it. lolTo be fair and give a "beat down," the plotlines are fairly clichéd, and kinda recycled-- reminiscent of The Karate Kid. But...I found the characters pleasantly likeable, the internal struggles relatable(to a point), and the acting/action sequences well executed. Keeping this short and sweet without droning on about the plot, I simply say if you are a teen or a closeted addict sneaking a fix for a clichéd but surprisingly good summer flick--look no further than Never Back Down. Even some of us movie cynics liked it ( but...shhh! don't tell anyone).

I would compare it greatly to The Karate Kid but with a modern MMA feel to it. MMA scenes are somewhat realistic, but as you know nothing can capture the reality of the sport other than the sport itself. Decent plot, good story line, makes you want to go hit the heavy bag!

Hounsou is his trainer.If nothing else, Farris is a solid young actor who is likely to go onto better things. Honsou, who has appeared in much better films,appears to be slumming here. I've been wanting to see this movie for some reason, I don't usually watch fighting movies, but recently I've been wanting to. This movie is fairly good, It was much better than expected, but I didn't think it's the best movie of all time. I found some of the acting to be okay, but the storyline was very good and deep. If you want a good movie about fighting, drama, and a good storyline then check this one out. The fight scenes are intense and the sound of effects for the bones cracking are really good. Recommended.***Did anyone notice that they removed Sean Faris' mole on the cover of the DVD?
Clearly, this is not the work of the Coen Brothers, but if all you wantis a good way to spend an afternoon with a friend, this movie is great.Allow me to first say: I really did enjoy this movie. Honest, I did.But the truth is, for all its muscle-flexing and roundhouse-kicking,this movie is just unbelievably silly. If you can find a high-schoolwith that many future models and kids as psychopathic as Ryan McCarthy,please contact me and I'll delete this.I can completely understand how intense it would seem if I was Jake"Unbelievably Stereotypical High School Drama Name" Tyler (which Iguess the completely ridiculous name of "Baja" is supposed tocompensate for), but there are several parts where you just have towonder how realistic it is for one guy, even if he is a trainedfighter, to take on four reasonably sizable dudes.That said, if you can put realism to one side long enough to enjoy theincredibly brutal fight scenes and surprisingly engaging storyline,this movie is really fun. You won't learn a valuable lesson, but you'llwant to start a backyard MMA club when you get home (even though thefilm doesn't really present an accurate depiction of real-life mixedmartial arts).Overall, this movie is really fun and enjoyable. This movie is awesome. I was expecting it to be a knock off of other fighting movies with a plot that would bore me. I was delighted to find that not only was Never Back Down different from the other fighting movies the plot didn't completely evolve around a cheesey tournament where our hero and villian will meet for a final showdown. I don't wanna spoil the movie, but the ending is a shocker and I was pleased. Also the fighting scenes are great for a movie with a PG-13 rating. I was shocked that they allowed as much blood and violence as they did, and kept that rating. I dont add many movies to my "recomend to friends" list, but this one made it.
Well this is a basically a run out of the mill, average Martial Artsmovie with some novelties thrown into the mix. A great actor like Mr.Hounsou wasted his talent in this one, though I was surprised and happythat some of the action scenes and especially the training segmentsmade this predictable junk rather entertaining. There is also a lot ofeye candy here to be seen, pretty girls in tight dresses and shirtless,built men who clobber on each other, if that is your kind of thing. Like I mentioned earlier some of the action scenes are pretty OK. Wegot rolling cradles, arm bars, triangle choke holds etc. I love jujitsuand traditional wrestling so I thought the filmmakers indeed did quitea good job in showing those techniques on the silver screen, It isquite overdone of course, It is a Hollywood movie after all. Howeverthe story lacks, most of the characters are downright dumb andannoying, you have to suspend your disbelief quite a lot to swallow anyof this. Now, many people are arguing about the spirituality this movie lacksand I agree there is none. It is a prime example how the American mediabutchered the truly graceful arts of VALE TUDO etc. It has been botchedfor a mere violent circus attraction. I never agreed with cage fightingin the first place, at least there are some rules in it these days.Back in the day when the UFC was in its baby shoes, it reminded me moreof a bloody gladiatorial challenge then anything else. Do not get me wrong, I was also caught in the mix and watched UFC,PRIDE every now and then. There are also a lot of fighters I haverespect for but some are just knuckleheads that enter the cage for abeat-down and to let go of their violent tendencies. At least better ina cage then on the streets. This movie emphasizes on the knucklehead factor quite a lot. Its even abit scary. The movie wants you to believe that brawling is the coolestthing on earth, a real chick magnetizer and the answer to all ourproblems...reality is much harsher and unforgiving. Youngsters thesedays group on you and at least in this movie we have one on one fightswhich seem to be fair for the most parts.Nobody takes knifes or guns to the fight so maybe that is thespirituality the director wanted to express. It is not realistic butpretends to be, I just hope that young males and females do not get thethe impression that if you train for a few days you can become the nextUFC champion. With every form of martial arts it takes years ofdedication and discipline even more so in this sport because itemphasizes on so many applications such as grapples and strikes.I repeat it is still just a movie so just sit back and enjoy the actionfor what it is worth. If you look for a realistic, spiritual outlook onmartial arts better watch the Japanese movie black belt. That is a truemartial arts movie. If you look for entertaining Kong Fu flicks, wellas a fan you should know. Check out the jet Li's, Donnie Yens etc.As appendix, if you are into MMA and there are not many action moviesthat promote this sport, I can recommend flash point with Donnie Yen.the last fight makes totally up for the lacks that we find in thatmovie. Red Belt deserves a mentioning too but it suffers all too muchfrom the same problem this movie has, it pretends to be something thatit is not.
I just want to start by saying, 'WoW', i went out and watched this theday it was out in the UK...And i must admit i was very happy with it.Reading and hearing some reviews i knew this movie isn't going to be10/10.I give it a chance and went to see it, and i must admit, if your ateenager you'll love it, of both genders. It's about fighting, if youloved rocky, then this could be for you.It's the same type of plot as Fight Night with Brad Pitt, if you wantto go and watch a very well made fighting movie, man you cant beat thisfrom what else is out there at the moment.Conclusion? Watch it...Very good movie...The reviewers just don't likeit because yes it's been done before, but it's still very good. Don'tlisten to what others say, go and watch it and make up your ownopinions, because after all, what else are they for? Very high 9/10.

A "tough guy" teenager namedJake who looks like a cross between any guy in the O.C and Tom Cruiseswitches schools after his little brother gets a tennis scholarship.Now at this school, the kids see a youtube video of you beating uppeople within two days and all these kids straight out of the Hillscare about is fighting. Jake is asked to a party by an overly goodlooking generic girl who seems to think it is nerdy to know what theEnglish teacher is talking about and to wear a flannel shirt invitesJake to a party. At this party he is challenged to a fight with ateenage rip off of Fight Clubs Tyler Durden and he is destroyed becauseapparently overly good looking teenagers are also UFC champions. Hethen is trained by a Black version of Mr.Miagi and seeks guidance byhis best friend, a Shai Lebouf rip off. This movie is basically amodernized rip off of Karate Kid. Its too bad that the modern ages suckand this cliché movie is complete with cheese ball lines, over the topfights, and a cast straight out of any teenage melodrama show. I giveit 2 and a half stars because i loved karate kid and found this rip offto be so bad that its sort of entertaining just to see what silly thinghappens next. See Karate Kid instead.
this movie was stupid i cant believe i threw 10 bucks out the window for this piece of crap i thought it would be good cause my friends said it was awesome but these guys in the movie cant fight there way out of a wet paper bag there is 1 good kick in the whole entire movie now if i was the director i would of left martial arts movies to the professionals because im american and am saying americans can not make a fight movie leave it to the true martial artist please this is garbage.
In this competitive world , if you are not able to achieve success,then do yourself a favour , this movie has a situation similar one toyours.. Nothing is impossible .. if you believe in these great wordsand don't know how to achieve success then there is a lesson for you inthis movie. Hey . stop thinking about fighting .. no .. i mean you haveto learn a moral lesson that you can do things perfectly by learninghow to do them. So if you are not able to score high in exams , thenthis movie teaches you to mend your ways by making yourself capable ofscoring higher than your competitors. I saw this at a pre screening last night. I thought this movie wasgonna be cheesy, or just plain dumb. I was VERY surprised to find outthat this movie was VERY enjoyable. It had fantastic fight scenes thatwere really BRUTAL. It was all great except the story was a bit OVERLYdramatic at parts but thats fine with me. The Acting was alright waswell, though its not Oscar winning, its still great. Overall it waspretty good. One thing though, in the beginning part where Jake istalking about Achilles, he starts talking before his mouth moves soooooI dunno what that was but I'm sure it was just the camera but whoknows. Speaking of camera, the camera work was FANTASTIC! Very welldone, you really got into the fights when they took place. 8/10
From the trailer I assumed the best and I was rewarded. The action is fast paced, each scene is useful and masterfully written. If you like UFC or MMA fighting this movie kick serious a... You know it, I know it. So there is nothing like a good old brawl reminiscent of the original Rocky. The soundtrack is the strong suit of this movie it adds aggression and motivation. Watch it I strongly recommend it.
NEVER BACK DOWN is one of those movies you may happen upon while surfing the available films released on television and, out of curiosity or lack of better choices, inadvertently watch. The story by Chris Hauty seems to be a popular one, so many versions of this plot are floating around out there: angry lad meets his match in a high school kick boxing cum brutal fighting smooth ruffian and finds his way back to some semblance of normalcy by a dedicated coach. Jeff Wadlow directs this endless violence parade with some interesting faces - the angry young man Jake is portrayed by Tom Cruise lookalike Sean Faris, his 'underground fight club' opponent Ryan is Cam Gigandet - but the reason to keep watching this otherwise bloody mess of a film is the always fine Djimon Hounsou as the coach with experience and heart Jean Roqua. There is little character development and the dialogue is thankfully sparse, but if watching young men beat each other up is entertaining for you, then this is a film to sit through - unless you happen to locate a good book to read. But as someone said, as long as you don't think hard, it's entertainingand that's what you get. I agree that what you see in Never Back Downis nothing new, but to be fair with it, you have to have a story thatis more in line with the style of the time, in this case it's MixedMartial Arts. A bona-fide re-made Karate Kid (meaning the samecharacters with new faces playing them) would probably turn off fans ofthe original and would be hokey for today's audiences, even with MMA asthe style. So in my opinion, it's fitting that this one was made with awhole new cast of characters. See this film and take it for what it'sworth. If you want to be too picky about the similarities between thisand The Karate Kid, then stick to that (which I am a fan of by the way,as well as this re-vamped take). But if you are open minded and want tosee a different take, then by all means, check out Never Back Down!
